so I just had to post about this...it's the stuff that disc legend is made of...
So last night I was out at our local night course(it's the campus at Uvic...lot10.org...if you care)
and there were three guys playing that I joined up with. All three were throwing the same disc for there upshots, I picked one of them up for them as it was a gimme, The disc felt completley different then any disc I had felt. It was similar to an aero but with a more rounded edge...but the plastic was the coolest part. It was translucent white with a super high gloss to it, felt kind of like the softer later run CE plastics...anyways I ask about what kind of disc it is. It turns out these guys have been working with a plastic company to come up with a super high durability plastic that would be superior to even the old CE stuff, and this was a prototype run of discs...
So I asked how durable it was...we walked over to a stop sign...and started full out driving the disc into the edge of the sign to try and damage it...at least twenty backhand drives then I hammered it 5 times solidly at the sign, all shots hitting the disc solidly on the rim...So here is a disc that has been driven at full speed into the side of a metal sign, any disc should be cut...nicked...dented etc...but nothing...NOT A SINGLE MARK!!! holy crap...anyways I don't know too much else bout this disc...except after all the attemps to damage it it still flew exactly the same...I'm going out next week and will try to find out more about this disc. WOW
Maybe this is one of Bixby's discs that he claims he can throw 800 feet or whatever. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
If this is one of Bixby's discs, it's no wonder that he needs a helmet on the course

Yeah, I heard about this disc... Very sweet. It's a great disc for upshots and approaching... I want to get one once they're mainstream
Anyone seen the Gateway Illusion? No pun intended here. These are the stiffest discs I've ever felt. There's no way they could pass the flex test for pdga approval. I'm sure they would nick and scrape though. Do you know the company these guys were testing for?
Seems like a stop sign is going to have more give when hit by a disc than a well rooted tree, but I could be wrong. Think about it, crash a car into a tree, car gets owned, crash a car into a stop sign the sign gets owned.

I here your point there but I think what he was trying to get across was the fact that the metal edge of the sign didn't ding the rim of the disc. I would assume that the edge of a stop sign would ding a champion disc.
Don't think you can really compare a disc and a car in that scenario. The car weighs just a little more. I don't know what kind of disc that would be, but i'm sure it has everything to do with the plastic. I've got an Element made out of some really nice TPU that has hit some sharp edges and the concrete pretty hard and shows no signs of it whatsoever. More than likely the disc you have is made with the same kind of TPU(thermo poly-urathane). :D

I smell a new plastic that would limit the amount of discs I would have to buy over a long period of time. Unless of course I throw them into the lake at Winthrop.
You know with as many people out there talking about getting discs beat in so they fly right, how in the world would you ever get a disc like this beat in? Most of my discs are Gateway S plastic because I like that it is fairly durable, yet does break in well and holds that level of wear even longer. Maybe some people like plastic that is immaculate, personally I like plastic that looks like it has seen some time on the course. Don't know about everyone else, but I wouldn't use a disc in a round that mattered if it hadn't been roughed up a little.

The Illusion you felt was in the "S" plastic I assume. Although it is stiff at first it breaks in really nice and flies great. By the way the H/E plastic is very soft. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
These are just my observations, but my blunt nosed discs tend to be more durable, especally in high end, TPU blends of plastic than drivers anyway. This is especally true for direct hit type damage to the rim. It seems like skipping the disc on asphalt would be a better test because that's the kind of wear that would damage a disc like that more.
Although I love beat-in discs that I know how they fly, a disc in this plastic would be nice so I wouldn't have to replace stuff every few months (I play a lot of wooded courses)

I've noticed that proto "S" Illusions were kinda stiff, but later runs were just a tad softer on the flight plate.

Weve prety much eliminated future manufacturing of the S in discs like the Speed demon and Spirit as the rim is so small it gets broken in too quickly unless its firm.
The illsuions are a disc that we will continue to make in the S because it is a little more blunt and can handle tree hits better without bending the nose so much.
The first few runs were a little stiff but if you flex the disc back and forth in the hand some it will loosen up the polymers and they will become more flexible.
Dont be afraid to do this as the disc will regain its shape because of the resilancy( memory) in the polymers.
You cant really do this with DX or D as they are TPO's( thermal plastic olifins) not TPE"S( thermal plastic elastomers) and quite a bit less expensive!
Our S plastic is a lot closer to KC roc and Aviar than DX and D.
If anyone has an S type disc they feel is too stiff and wont pass the pdga test please feel free to send it back to us and we will replace it with 2 discs of something softer for you for the troubles!

Suddenly all my S plastic is feeling awfully stiff, Dave. ;)

I got to try it, and it's design is very similar to the old sky streaks... it's a great touch disc. so I can see it being a good approach/ "go for it" kinda disc, where you can run the target and not go too far past your mark.
can't wait till they put it out for the public. love to see a canadian disc on the market other than the optamizer :)

The car weighs just a little more.
Maybe just a little bit. Assuming the disc isn't a Condor.
The point was the sign has more give than the tree, regardless of what is hitting it. The analogy was appropriate. Did he throw the disc against the metal edge of the sign? He did not say that... If he threw the disc at the flat part of the sign post, then the disc edge would be hitting a blunt surface that has more give than a tree trunk and alot of the time tree bark is not blunt but rigid.

... and the Maximizer!!
Is it that big diameter, as a Skystreak I mean.... /msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif? Do you know if/when they are going into production?

Reread the first post and it clearly says he threw it at the edge of the sign. ;) :D/msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
so it does...sooo...it...does...
but how sharp/rigid is the edge of a stop sign really?!?!.........

I don't know... go smack yourself against the edge a few times and find out. :D

Do you have to wear a helmet to the meeting and is it in a padded room? I am sure Bixby has a helmet you could borrow and other protective gear. Are you sure you got the name of the group right? I mean you sure its not your weekly therapy group? ;)

I'm sorry but Bixby's head is only surpassed in size by MTL. :D:D
Hey all discaddicts, I'm going to be playing with these guys again next week, I'll let you know what I find out...in regards to the question about the stop sign...It was thrown at the "edge" of the sign...the quite sharp edge I would say, how sharp you ask...well when I threw my speed demon one night and hit the edge of the same sign by accident, it cut off a chunk of my favorite Gateway disc...so now I have a speed demon that can stand up on its end...
so yes it's a sharp metal edge.
That being said my speed demon still flies the same??? Is it still legal seeing as it wasn't intentionally altered?
I'm sorry but Bixby's head is only surpassed in size by MTL. :D:D
Don't forget the Pimp. ;)

Very true, if I could throw half as far as he and others say they can throw I would have gone pro by now. :p :D :D

He can throw 500' but 550' is a stretch and it is very sparatic. I can throw 474' check the distance comp at worlds.
Scoot you are just a friggon phenom. I ain't got talent, just a lot of free time and a lot of years of strengthening my forearms. :p

You can't throw 250? I haven't been playing a year and I can throw 300-360, and I've made very slow progress without anyone showing me how to do it. I think pimp said he was practicing over a year and got help at some point. Why's it so hard to believe he's thrown 500? Record is 812? or whatever, he throws 5/8's the record and you think he is full of BS?
Um, Jack, its called sarcasm... look it up... oh and while in the dictionary... its funny... but I heard your version doesn't have the word gullible anymore. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Why is it hard to believe people throw that far? I've played some of the courses Millz plays and they require long throws. Aren't a lot of Texas courses long too? They get a lot of practice on the course throwing far plus any field practice. If you play a course that favors rollers you probably have a good roller. It's just how it is.
