I was needing input for buying some discs for my girlfriend. I just introduced her to disc golf over the weekend and she fell in love with it. I knew she was a keeper. ;) And being how it's Valentine's day, what a better gift than a couple of discs of her own.

I would say just about anything would be better (and I love disc golf)!!! /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

ROC

Cobra

Stingray

Valkarie

Sidewinder (but if you can find those light - please send some to me too, sweets ;))

try to keep the weights light - like around 160 or below if you can find em - 165 would be the heaviest I would go to start.

let her find her snap first before trying out the heavier stuff

find out if there are other women who play courses near you and try to get them to play with both of you - women sometimes learn better from other women

Very true. Get her a traditional V-day gift and then the discs as well.

Yeah, I've got that picked out, but wanted to surprise her with a out of the ordinary gift. She was even bummed out cuz it was raining here on Sunday so we couldn't go out to play.

As a female player...

My favorite disc is the Valkyrie(157-163). The dx stingray has been very useful in helping me learn how to turn over a disc(150-155). For me a roc is too big in diameter and I prefer the spider (165). When I first started the typical AVIAR putter was uncomfortable in my hand, so I started out throwing Blunts. Now I throw a SS Wizard (165) which I like a lot better, but the mold was dificult to get used to at first. Hope this helps, and have fun playing with your girlfriend. :D

I like Millenium discs for females. The rim seems to be smaller than the Valkerie and other discs. I find that the QJLS or the JLS fits in my hand better than a Valkerie. I also love the Teebirds, you can usually find those in light weights. Try not to get her overstable discs because all of the stuff she throws in the beginning will go left anyway. I love the roc and the wasp for midrange. I dont know about your girl but the dye and the color of the disc mattered a lot in the beginning to me.

QJLS 162
Storm 165 (I love this disc)
Stingray 165
ROC 160
Cheetah 162

Those are the ones I can't do without :)
I am trying to work my way down in weight. Unfortunately I was given discs that were 170-180 even when I started. I didn't know any better :(

Feb 14 2005, 05:22 PM
I feel these discs are perfect for the girlies,

storm
breeze
gazelle
ROC
Apex
aviar
Shark
Valk
Zflick
QJLS
Teebird
Viper
Cheetah
Leopard

Choose your own weights as everyone likes different weights 149-167

I'd say a Leopard, a Shark, or a Stingray in DX. I'd also recomend this to anyone just picking up disc golf.

My girlfriend plays some and her three favorite discs are her 150g Archangel, 142g #1 Driver and, 165g Xpress. She also likes the 150g #1 Flyer and 150g Champion Leopard but seems to gravitate twards the first three discs the most.

She doesn't really like the feel of most midrange discs or putters, so I can only really give driver recommendations. However, she has held the Element and she likes how it feels but hasn't thrown one yet. That might be a disc to consider.

Also consider that she might have a color preference that could be stronger than her mold preference, especally if she isn't very serious about it.

Yeah my wife (begins cussing uncontrollaby under breath) only cared how "pretty" the dang disc looked while flying the short distance she trhough it. Got her a MRV that had a nice corkscrew tye dye job and it was her favorite disc. Get the girls the pretty discs until they can differentiate in molds and then they will be able to pick themselves.

I think the ZFlick is a bit overstable - even in the 150 class. It's a very touchy disc with a shallow rim - quite easy to get that puppy nose up - I would not recommend it for a beginner. :)

Funny you should mention that, when I was showing her discs at the store, the first disc she picked up was like a 175 Champion Leopard cuz it was a "pretty" and her nickname is Leopard. Go Figure :D

Jeff - She finally broke in half that day I played Nockamixon. :( I miss her so much and my game hasn't been the same since.

The Leopard and Stingray make disc golf for my wife fun. Both 150 class

My wife has been playing since I started, which has been for a couple of years now, and here's what she likes... QJLS, JLS, LS, and now she's really diggin the SIDEWINDER. QMS, and a WASP for midranges. She has gotten to where she can throw a MONSTER, and a VALKERIE for her overstable disc needs. She likes everything heavy 170- 175. The only light weight disc she has is a 160 ORC, which she throws for an S- shot. Hope that helps you.

Probably not for a beginner, but any woman who throws forehand should try a 150 Flick. There was a lady in my group playing doubles before Hawaii States a few weeks ago who threw a very similar style of forehand to mine, driving mostly with a Monster. I had her try my Flick, and her first throw was a screaming S-curve, with about 30% more distance than she'd been getting with the Monster. She went on to win Am in the tournament using the Flick as her only driver.

As for total beginners I played with two 9th grade girls and one of their moms this weekend in the Ice Bowl. I had them use DX Cobras and Panthers, all in the 140s, and it didn't take them long to get pretty competent.

And finally, my friend's girlfriend gets good results from a 170 Champion Stingray. We gave her a 150 DX Leopard to try once, and she couldn't control it at all.

So all this is to say there are almost as many different women in the world as men?

I would suggest a Sabre and Element and a Wizard all around 165g. Check your PM and let me know what you think

Feb 15 2005, 01:45 AM
Get her a sexy pink shark.

Give her something she can throw so you can gaurntee that you will be aced later ;)

Feb 15 2005, 10:02 AM
My wife at 66 yrs. old throws 138 Lightning F-2 Flyers and 110 Gateway Sabres and 160 Wizards. She can't handle anything heavier.

Feb 15 2005, 02:33 PM
Find the lightest, flippiest stuff you can. My wife's favorites are: 140g Champion Stingray, 138g DX Valkyrie, 150g DX Shark, 145g DX Leopard, 150g JK Valkyrie, 165g Aviar Putter.

My girlfriend has been playing for about 6-8 weeks now. She really likes the 150 teeBird we got this weekend. It is already her favorite disc. Other than that she throws a 150 Valk, 160 Sidewinder, 175 Spider, 150 Flick (new to her). She was given a few 150 Leapords that she is flipping badly right now, but I think will get better.

She has a bad tendancy to either throw nose up or with a lot of anhyzer as her 2 biggest gaffs...any of you ladies have any tips?

Feb 15 2005, 06:53 PM
Doug, we need to get togetherand play some golf soon... as I have a new lady friend I will be introducing to the sport soon and I am sure she would appreciate another new player on the card as well ;)

I was told to mimic the good players I saw. Its all about form with the women. Act like a ballerina, I know it sounds silly but if she over exagerates her movements and tries to be graceful it will really help.

I'm trying to teach her to snap the disc more now. She keeps her armo to straight and throws in a more circular motion. I'm trying to get her to practice snapping the wall with a towel to simulate a good disc golf throw. Hopefully that will help a little.
