Hi all! Yesterday as I often do I like to go to a local gym/workout center where I love to work up a good glow doing weightlifting exercises. I find there is nothing better for my psyche than enjoying the company of other like-minded chaps who enjoy the camaraderie and fellowship that comes with breaking a good sweat in pursuit of working on our physiques. Spotting for and being spotted for while bench pressing is a fine way to get to know other chaps and you get to really know other people when they arent worried about appearances or putting on airs just the pure Zen of you, another lifter, and lots of sweat: There is nothing so peaceful yet exhilarating as you lay on that bench staring up at your partner and their staring back at you as you prepare to lift.
I was prompted to post this inquiry as I had developed a concern that centers around my weight lifting activities: Can too much of a good thing be bad? That is: Can I lift weights too much and build up my physique to such an extent that my muscle mass could overwhelm the long, languid throwing motion and finishing position I have worked so hard to achieve in my DG game?
Who among us doesnt adore the lean yet muscular physique of an Olympic swimmer? As I was preparing for a theme cruise later this spring I was moved to step up my weight training exercises in the hope that I could look my very best not just for my own selfish interests and self-confidence but to look my very best for my partner as I moved between day and lounge wear to formal evening wear and so forth... I mean, really, is there anything more yucky than seeing a chap in a snug fitting pair of swim briefs while also sporting even a hint of love handles? Yes, I thought youd agree!
In the process of making myself over however, I worry that the weight training may play havoc with the throwing style I have worked on for these many years: I worry most that any adjustment to my physique will have a correspondingly negative effect on my shameless plug here! personalized Feline Crouching Throwing system which I have developed and honed over the years and will it take valuable length off my throws not to mention what it might subsequently do to my accuracy capabilities!
I feel like Im between a rock and a hard place, gang, and although Ive been in that position before on any number of hikes, this particular scenario has me most perplexed! Ive come to rely on many of your insights so your advice is most welcome here: Should I continue my weightlifting as vigorously as I have been for the short term goal of looking my best for my cruise, at the long term risk of what it might do to my game?!?

I have learned in my past experience to stick with only 12 oz curls.

Just do more high repititions at lower weights. You don't want to bulk up for DG, just strengthen and tone. Keep stretching everyday to remain loose.

This is the first obvious answer I have found to a Bixby post... how many felines have you seen with huge muscles? I mean I have never seen a ripped cat. Fat ones, yes, but no ripped ones... Endurance and flexibility would seem to lend themselves to the squatting dog or crouching feline thing. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

It is a falacy that being big means being inflexible, unless, of course, you are not warming up and stretching pre- and post-workouts. Try some yoga classes after a good workout. You'll be the most limber guy at the Venice Beach outdoor training facility.

Pterodactyl hit it right on the money. That is complete rubbish about how lean mass makes you very immobile and inflexible.
If you properly do caliestinics and "loosening" up before hand, lifting weights and putting on muscle will only help your Disc Golf.

Now if you don't do stretching and start shooting up steroids and drink Protein shakes everyday and do 500 lb. Squats and build your body weight to 300lbs. then sure you might have problems throwing a Disc.

But this scenario is far and few between and usually applicable unfortunately to Professional athletes !!

Fact is you if hit the weight room 2 times a week you will find those
precarious situations such as your Disc being under a tree much more manageable when only brute raw strength can be utilized and NOT technique !!
