We all have our favorite new discs from 2004. Mine were the Illusion and Element/ElementX combo and I know a lot of people loved the Orc. Just wondering if anyone has heard any rumors of new molds being worked on for this year. This seemed to be the year of the high speed driver and didn't know if that would be the fashion for 2005 also or if it would shift to another genre. So chime in with rumors, myths, or any real info you may have.
I have a feeling that the High Speed driver can't really be improved on with the technology we are currently using. Gateway seems to be the leading innovator in design right now although their discs aren't as popular.
I think we are going to see a new design of high speed, understable drivers. Probably a new understable driver from Gateway, Quarter K, a couple more understable discs from Innova and Discraft. I think there might be a few short range drivers that come out. But I think the biggest thing this year is going to be plastics. I think ALL the major companies are going to reformat the plastics they use.
Maybe a light disc fad too.
2004 was the year of the high speed driver. 2005 will be the year of the plastic.

Graham,
Seeing as though TPU ( Champion, Z and Evolution) is the best sports equipment polymer on the market I'm not sure where the "plastics improvement" can go.
Maybe this will be the year players realize how much better Matted discs are for control
Yeah you might have to buy more of them, but 5 or10 feet closer on every shot is HUGE!!! ;)
I know I have a very revolutionary idea for a new product design.( anybody out there with an extra stack of cash thats willing to invest in a capitol venture can email me directly)
[email protected] ;)
Hopefully our sales will increase and we can afford to do the mold building and the R&D by the worlds this year.
We are finally getting the Clear/translucent stuff produced and that should help us gain more confidence in the retail users.
Having our "TEAM" players do so well this weekend at the 1st supertour of the year in brooksville is a great start!
I would look for a few new discs from Aerobie and I'm curios to see if Whammo will add any new discs to their lineup.
From what I hear on the discwing disc I would be really surprised if the production runs are made in TPU, especially if the same design of the prototypes are used!
The large concave where the rim meets the flight plate really adds to the mass which will make it hard to produce in the high end stuff :(
Rumor has it that Ching has a driver mold in the works.

The 'rumor' is when we'll be ready to release the first driver..."in the works" is a definite. Final mold is complete - but at this time we're continuing our practice of preparing plastic(s) for consistent production before distribution. I'm also trying hard to stick to the practice of not marketing products before they are ready to ship(!), but we're scheduled for availability by spring/summer. Eventually we'll have a distance series in various stability levels based on the same basic profile, similar to these test samples:
http://www.chingdiscgolf.com/reference/driverprofiles-01.jpg
Prototypes are performing very well - as expected. We've produced a handful of 'naked' (no contours) drivers to compare an exact profile with our contoured version. We're also testing alternative Excelerator patterns which may be an improvement over the original '9-point' style used in the Juju model.

Mike,
Are these actuallty produced by injection molding or are they made from a solid block and laser cut?
Are you saying that your going to put the thumb grooves on your drivers?
The far left disc looks really close to an orc/beast.

This summer if I have time to and the money to, I will be switching my bag all to gateway.
I am loving the wizards
I am loving the element-xs
When I threw a friend's spirit, I loved that(even threw if further than my 150 flick).
If I could beat in my S Illusion I might like it too.
Those are the only things I have thrown from gateway....
I remember when Gateway was a joke because everything was majorly overstable. They are finally starting to get more stable with each new mold.

Yeah everthing is great. The "H" illusion is a sweet flyer and a greta roller as well. The "e" spirits need to break in a little but I can tell they will be sweet, and the greean speed demon flies low and suprisingly striaght. All I can say about the new "E" blaze is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ if that is saying anything at all I can throw it almost as far as the drivers but it is so accurate and consistant. Finally the "e" element-x meets my needs as far as overstable mid and I like it more than the "s" version. Ok my brother need the comp so I'm out. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Cdale,
We have Elements in Clear/translucent as well as Sabres and Blazes, but the Illsuion Spirit and elementX are not Clear in the Evolution. We should have the Element-X in clear/translucent one day soon.
The non clear E plastic is just a durable but because of mass factors( either too big or too small) in certain models they cant be made clear.
Most liekly the Demon wont be run in Clear urathane unless a miracle happens.
What is it exactly about clear/translucent that pops up peoples pup tents?

Having never held a clear evolution disc but owning at least one each of your S, H, and E, my personal desire for it is to have a consistent feel with the rest of the discs in my bag (champion or Z). The opaque is really not far off and I would probably be happy with those four in the opaque E. Is an E demon (the heavier the better) possible? I like the flight of my S Demon it just feels so different (for me durability comes before grippiness as I play alot in the woods). And where would be the best online retailer to find a good selection of those four in the E (clear if possible, opaque if not)?

Well gee Matt, its apparently so obvious even you figured out how obvious it is. Maybe that makes you General Obvious. Also, not to knock the deal but people do need to understand that this is a misprint package. To me I could care less and plan on picking up a package soon, but I don't want people ordering and then complaining about Gateway because they didn't read into the deal and just followed the small price tag.

Boneman,
We have 2 missed stamped specials. 5 for $35 or 10 for $50.
This is a flat rate and we pick up the shipping and handling! The offer will be good as long as we have some missed stamps onthe shelf!
Dave, when's the next time someone will be in the office. I didn't know if you guys were taking Presidents Day on monday. Need to get in on that deal... its impossible to pass up. But would I be able to get just 1-2 Illusions, 1-2 of the new CE Sabres if you have any mistamped, 2 elements, 2 element x's and 3-4 wizards?
So where is this offer at?
Go to the gateway disc sports sight and then go to the store. It should be under specials there.
You would be better off calling the shop and talking to Justin.
threw the new disraft d crush....long and stable....nice and grippy.....if it didn't fall apart when it hits a rock or something...it would wear in nicely....but if you play on a (soft)course then its a great disc....

why is there always so many new discs?? marketing i guess!!
Bill,
I hope your not asking this as a serious question.
Lets see;
1st of all innova basically dictates the " how, what and when" by completely dominating the market for so long!
Everytime innova releases a new disc they get a huge surge in sales by the loyal following.
So discraft started doing this to keep up with the joneses.
There are only 4 companies who actually have a complet set of discs for the game and only 3 of us who are releasing new discs. I know that Gateways latest surge of sales is partially due to the fact that we have released 4 new discs in the last 8 months.
Luckily for me they are huge improvements to the lineup and brought us closer to a complete set for every skill level of disc golfer!
On the other side of it;
The players have created the demand for new products.
Instead of actually getting out and training to become better they think the next new disc will help there game.
If 90% of all players went back to gazelles, rocs and aviars and learned how to play with only those 3 discs.
They would all improve their games
MOST players who have started during the era of fast, overstable and slick surfaced plastic, have a tendancy to have less technique and certaing not as good as some of us old school guys ;)
This is also true for any player who learns to throw a driver before he learns to throw a putter.
Most new players want to JERK reverse right out of the hand while old school guys like the the hyzer flip up!
I'm pretty sure your a hyzer flip up guy arent you?
I am not saying that discs like the Illusion, flash and orc arent valuable to ones game, its just they shouldnt be your primary driver unless every hole on your course is over 400 feet!

Feb 19 2005, 03:38 PM
You're right on Dave. I am one of the newer players that you are talking about. I got to 400' really fast, but the rest of my game was, and in many ways still is very disproportional and undeveloped. Over the past 6 monthes I have been throwing my putter for almost 75% of my total golf shots and my form has improved dramatically, as well as my understanding of the rest of my discs and the game itself. The new, fast, wide rimmed drivers allowed me to throw with nearly professional "D" before I even had the skill to release the disc on the angle of my choosing.
My opinion is a little different than yours regarding plastic types. While I can certainly appreciate matte finish discs in poor weather, I have really grown comfortable with the slick plastics and actually prefer them. The newer runs of Champion, Z, and even your opaque "E" (as in the Spirits) offer significant grip improvements as compared to earlier versions. Also, I don't know if you have ever been to Kalamazoo, but our courses are heavily wooded, and even our pros seem to at least prefer their drivers in premium plastic. I tore up dx plastic so fast when I first started that if I hadn't found a CE Valk at Hudson Mills I can honestly say that I may never have really gotten into the sport. That disc gave me the confidence to play more often without having to worry about buying new discs.
On an unrelated note, but with more pertinence to this thread, I think that the small diameter midrange is something that is going to be revamped and revolutionized next, and I would love to see a Demon-type disc that was closer to stable out of the box and possibly available in higher end polymers.
gdstour
Feb 19 2005, 08:29 PM
We have had several requests for the demon in the Evolution plastic.
As I've said before it's mass is a little to much for the weight or density of the TPU.
The way to make a demon less overstable right out of the box would be to make another wing that is less concave.
Unfortunately this would add MORE mass and make it even more difficult to get down under 175.
Being that drivers out sell ALL other discs about 100-1 I wouldnt expect much more development in that area.
Jim (discraft) has a pretty complete lineup of mid-ranges already and innova seems to be doing pretty well still with the roc.
*
We could make another top and wing to go with our element, element-X that would give us 4 more discs (6 all together) mid-ranges in 3 plastics for a total of 18 different flights. That seems like enough to cover all the shots, dont you think?

I'm just waiting for one of the manufacturers to start adding RFID chips to track the discs.
Check out Radar Golf (http://www.radargolf.com). A little pricey for your average disc golfer, but a great concept.
There is an ANCIENT story from a Boy's Life magazine wherein a kid invents a golf ball with a gyroscope-powered device in it that makes a chirping sound, but it is only triggered by the errant spin of a hook or slice. No idea how realistic it was, but I wonder if the inventor of these golf balls had read it...
