Hi all! I am just bursting with ideas for the group! I recently played a round of DG at the invitation of a wonderful acquaintance of mine in Southern California. We had a lovely day out on the course and my spirit soared like a disc drive floating down the fairway
While Im sure a lot of that had to do with playing the game I love so much, I dont discount that the feelings that surged inside me were due in part to being in the company of such a fine chap who had magnificent form! His finishing position is a sight to behold!
Along around the 12th basket or so, I started feeling well Ill just come right out and say it pooped. When we started earlier that day I was as frisky as a new kitten, but as the match wore on I could just feel the power draining from my legs and it started to show in my tosses. I actually became so winded that I fainted briefly, but thankfully my host - who was in the process of dabbing away some of the sweat that had formed on my tailbone tattoo - was there to catch me.
It occurred to me post-match as we took in the rest of the late-afternoon/early evening admiring a lovely sunset that the root cause of my energy dilemma might have been a lack of proper nutrition both pre-match and intra-match: To wit, I normally like to consume a large sampling of peanuts in the shell along with premium roasted coffee prior to each match: It usually results in a system cleansing that feels almost like a rebirthing process. It leaves me fresh as a daisy and ready to take on the world! During the match I like to rehydrate and repower with a combined intake of fresh bottled water, liquid yogurt, and soy biscuit treats that I bake myself.
As it happened, my host - being the life long bachelor that he is - didnt have many of the refreshments that I normally rely on. As such I was forced to play sans soy and the results spoke for themselves. Id like to open this up to the group: What energy secrets do you keep in your disc bags? I suppose there is the de rigueur energy bar, but I thought this would make for an interesting opportunity for many to share their secret source of energy that they tap into over the course of a match?
As so many of you already know, I take my disc golf seriously: So if youre wondering if my host felt my wrath that day for not supplying the proper nutrition during our match I can assure you that while there were some tense moments, I wasnt about to let it spoil our time together and Im happy to report we had a marvelous time later that same weekend painting and glazing at a local paint your own pottery shop, so alls well that ends well!

I've heard of others relying on the oxidation of dried plants. Others choose barley pop...and still others choose malt sodas.

That settles that. I'll be looking forward to DiscGraham follow ups to Bixby posts. :D

I use Quaker oat bars of the chocolate chip type; the oats give long term energy while the chocolate chips and honey provide instant energy.

You know the help dabbing sweat off the tailbone tattoo (what it is has me curious) may have made the thread awkward, but this is actually a pretty earnest topic. I mean I don't think we will ever see helmets in DG, but I have been known to carry granola bars on days I plan on playing 36 holes or more. Has the great Bixby ran out of dumb topics to ask about and is now forced to talk about reasonable subjects (all be it in an abnormal way)?

nothing can match the power of a good ol' crack pipe.

I'm curious about this as well...

On a long day golfing I never seem to drink/eat enough and often wind up with insane migranes.

That being said, when I do think to eat/drink, I like water and power-aid to keep hydrated. A Red Bull inbetween rounds to keep up the energy. And Power Bars, the harvest kind which are pretty tastey. Also jerky is good to have along too. When I made the effort to consume all these things I'm usually pretty good to go.

I don't drink beer on the course too often anymore, it kills me.

If you like the harvest type, try Clif Bars. The bomb. And Clif Shots are great for fueling while playing. I could've rolled through World's on these alone if I wanted to.

I agree. A CLif bar after 9 holes and you feel like you just started the round. Just be sure to bring enough water to wash it down. And if its cold, make sure you keep the bar warm, unless you want to lose all of your teeth. but they DO actually taste really good

I was looking for cliff bars, but found powerbars at Costco buy one and one free, so i got two cases for $20.00 . I'll be using those for a long time.

I've not had the best results with PowerBars or Clifbars. They wreak havok on my digestive system....... plus, much of the mass-produced "health food" is getting too expensive.

Here's the recipe for my smoothies:

6 oz. peanut butter
4 to 6 oz. fresh raspberries or blueberries
6 oz. soy milk (rice milk is OK, but will remain thin)

Blend it in a Waring Blender (credit to Warren Zevon). It does not have to be cold when you drink it. The body usually absorbs the nutrients better and faster in liquid form, close to room temperature. Tastes like drinking a PBJ sandwich. :D

A beer or 6 and a couple doobs work well for me

But candy. any sort of candy. mmmm penny candy

agreed on the clif bars, They taste the best and work like magic, but making smoothies course side sounds like you've been playing with Bixby too much!!! :o

CLiff bars are good but Balance and Zone perfect are better rated bars, higher in protein and lower in sugars, and calories. I think the cliff bar was rated a B, in runners world. Worst thing for you is power bar gels, no good for energy, just a sugar rush. Power bars I think were a C or C -. They also taste like cardboard.

I read this and couldn't stop laughing until I read it correctly, I thought it said Boobs

That's also an endurance athlete's take on them. As a former competitive MTB racer I can tell you that racing vs. DG is a totally different set of variables. I don't need a lot of stored energy to throw a disc and walk after it, racing is totally different. You just gotta experiment to find what works for you. I found that, for me, Met-RX bars give me exertion headaches that drop me to the floor. Weird but true.

So far, the best drink I've found to keep me going is apple cider. I have to be careful not to drink too much of it too fast, however. If I'm playing a day full enough that I expect to need more than 32 ounces I substitute whatever's handy for part of the day, which unfortunately for my body usually means soda.

As for snacking, the best choice I've probably made was peanuts and raisins (I don't always like to mix them, though, because I prefer my peanuts salted and I think salty raisins taste awful). Some of my favorites that have been less convenient to try to deal with have included fried chicken sandwiches or chicken fingers, cold roast beef sandwiches, and Biscuitville chicken biscuits...these tend to be harder to hang on to and work better between rounds. Less nutritious alternatives I've used include Cheez-It crackers mixed with peanuts, Tootsie Rolls, and other cheap snacks and candies. However, in the case of needing a steady supply of energy to keep going throughout the day (Great Eight, anyone?) I would say that my top choice would probably be apple juice or apple cider (about a quart per course), enough iced tea to intersperse and make sure my stomach doesn't rebel at the quantity of apple juice, cold roast beef or fried chicken sandwiches, and peanuts. The catch is that the sandwiches are best at least half consumed while not actually playing...makes the remainder easier to keep hold of.

Careful with too much apple cider/juice, it'll keep ya going alright...has quite a laxitive effect. "Don't want no brown-outs on my card!" :o

While a decent attempt, you have disgraced the sylings of the great Bixby. Nowhere in your random and misguided attempt at a post was there anything even close to resembling a clear sick undertone that Bixby so elloquently adds. While we thank you for your attempt, leave the stupidity to Bixby. :D:D

true, but if you want long term, as in all day 6 hours of playing sugar is the worst thing, carbs are good but you need protein as well. The Zone perfect bars are very tasty and have plenty of protein and good carbs low in sugar..

Feb 25 2005, 02:45 PM
Bixby, Maybe you should have your Man Juice Protein shake before the round instead of after
