About 4 months ago I changed from the Power Grip to the Fan Grip (for drives) b/c I was flipping a lot of discs over with the Power Grip and felt like I was losing a lot of accuracy. Since switching to the Fan Grip I've learned to throw basically as far as I was with the Power Grip, and much more accurate.

Now and then I'll use the Power Grip (in practice), but it just doesn't feel right anymore. And I still turn most discs over.

I am wondering if anyone has had similar experience and/or if anyone thinks I should re-incorporate the Power Grip. i.e. is it asinine to use the fan grip when using the Power Grip could easily add 25% to my drives? I would only probably use it on wide-open holes however, due to accuracy issues.

I kind of had a similar experience. I started with 4-finger power grip. Now, when you first start playing, nothing will consistanly do what you want it to. After a time, I started finding more consistant success with a 3-finger fan grip...so, I used it. It was easier for me to keep the nose down, but I couldnt get a great amount of distance (<300 ft. 90% of the time).

I stuck with that grip for almost a year. One day, as I watched players with the same build and strength as I had throw 50ft+ farther ALL the time... I decided that my technique needed to improve, and went back to the 4-finger power grip again. Incidently, this was about the same time I starting going out to the large open field close to my house and practicing more.

Now, I use the 4-finger power grip on most drives (>300ft) and the 4-finger fan grip on most mid-range throws (80-250ft.) I acomplished all of this through practice...not 4 hours a days every day, rain or shine....just a few hours a week. I got better distance while still being able to keep the nose down...got better at a variety of things actually :D.

Just get out in a field when you can and work it out....maybe the fan grip is for you...maybe the power grip is for you...maybe a combination of both....maybe you throw better with your toes . But, you'll definitly figure it out quicker in practice than out at the course

Jroc - That is good advice. And that reminds me that the reason I was flipping everything over initially was b/c I couldn't get the nose down comfortably so I started to "force" it down which I think was causing the flipping. I think I will try the 3 finger power grip b/c I think my pinky may be the cause of keeping the nose up, so I will take it off for now and practice. (After I'm done practicing putting of course . . . /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I started playing with a power grip, but couln't throw my rocks without flipping them over everytime. Somebody suggested I should try the fan grip for my rocks and putters so I did and it worked really well, no I throw everydisc with a fan grip and throw further than with a powr grip, the power grip just doesn't feel comfortable anymore.

The best player to ever play this game uses the fan grip, for every shot. Couldnt hurt to do the same thing.

I only fan grip my upshots and putts. I power grip all my drivers.

Hey Schweb are you talking about Kenny or Barry???

My vote would be for Kenny.

I for upshots and approaches I use a fan grip. But I am not sure the grip I use for my drives off the tee box or subsequent long shots. It is due to my tee box mantra of spinning the disc loosely in my hands I actually really do not hold onto the disc untill I start to bring my arm forward. But it happens so fast I cannot tell what grip I use. I think it would be either a 3 or 4 fingered power grip.

Exactly!! I am about 6'2"...but, I have small hands for my height. When I first started...I also felt my pinkie was 'getting in the way'. When I went back to 4-finger...I took some Scott Stokley advice and put my thumb farther out on the rim...real close to the edge....and gripped the lip tighter with thumb and first finger. That solved my 'nose-up' problem....(and after a bit of practice :D:D), my drives got farther, more accurate, and more consistant

Whatever works.........whatever works :)

I'd say stick to fan.

BUT I personally will always have a power grip available because that's the best grip for me when everything is wet and it's really hard to keep dry.

I'd like to hear from anyone that throws FARTHER with fan grip than power grip and why that might be so.

how would you define a fan grip?

how would you define a fan grip?

Index finger on da rim, ring and middle finger on the flight plate pressing onto the pinky which is on the rim.

I think I heard that Climo's grip (which Schweb described above) is more accurately called a stacked? grip, which I suppose is a sort of fan grip or a compromise between a fan grip and a power grip. My understanding of a fan grip is with 3+4 fingers not touching pinky, kinda like most people's putting grip.

Like a couple here already said, I use a power grip for drives and a fan for approach and putting.

You're turning over the disc despite release angle? Maybe you need some heavier weight discs? It's my understanding those are harder to turn over.

I like the 'mantra' quote too, I have a little pree drive ritual that I think helps ready my mind and body for the shot... I twirl the disc 2 twice around my finger then set the disc edge in the crease of my palm, then do one slow mo practice release.

Seems like everyone's is different, but I believe rthe routine helps.
