I'm sure a few DGers have made the trip from Texas to Florida before, and although I probably will do it anyway, I was going to see if anyone could tell me about the worthwhile courses to play on the way as opposed to looking up every little bump on the road on the PDGA Course Database. We'll be staying the night at a relative's house in Baton Rouge, so the likely route would be I-20 from DFW to Shreveport, then I-49 and I-10 from Shreveport to Baton Rouge. Then we'll take I-10 and I-75 from Baton Rouge to Orlando. The only worthwhile stops I currently know of are in Shreveport. I figured there'd be some good courses in Baton Rouge, AL, Mobile, AL, and obviously some in the Orlando area. Any others not more than 20 minutes off the major roads that I should look at?

Mobile has a half-dozen or more courses, mostly of easy access from interstate. There is a wide variety---tight wooded, long open, short but fun---and even some surprising elevation to be so close to the coast. Depends on what you're looking for in a course.

i would recommend acadiana park in lafayette...right off the intersection of I-49 and I-10...you'll be going right by it.

while you're at it...eat at prejean's cajun seafood restaurant in lafayette...it's on the east side of I-49, just a mile or two north of I-10. incredible award winning cajun food. we first had it at jazzfest...now we make any excuse to go there when we're anywhere near louisiana.

acadiana park is 36 holes...there is a guided animated tour of every hole here:

Acadiana Park Web Page (http://www.angelfire.com/la3/iforget3/acadiana/)

(http://www.angelfire.com/la3/iforget3/acadiana/ if the link doesnt work)

try the guided ace run duzee tour...pretty cool.

Highland Road Park in Baton Rouge is a really nice course, and one I really love to play while I’m occasionally in town visiting my company’s chemical plant. There are 3 sets of tees at Highland Road: blue tees for novices, orange "regular" tees and yellow pro tees. From the orange tees, the course is an excellent mix of short and long holes over nice rolling hills with moderate elevation changes, which is rare in that part of the country. There are plenty of deucable holes, honest par threes and 3 legitimate par fours. (Holes 2,4 and 8) A few holes play over a creek, and a few holes play through some areas of heavy vegetation. Most play in the open, and since the park service keeps the grass cut very low you can throw rollers on many holes. I think the course would be considered world class and have a wider reputation if permanent tee pads were installed. The yellow pro tees are awesome – they don’t always add length to the hole but they always make the tee shot that much more difficult, especially when they take away the easy deuce on holes such as 3, 9, 11, and 13.

I haven't been there, but I've heard that Wildcat Trace in Poplarville, MS is fantastic.

Since I'm a newbie all I've played is Highland Road Park in BR and it's a nice park. I plan on playing Acadiana pretty soon as it looks to be a nice one as well.
As for as Highland goes, I find the front 9 much harder than the back 9. Also when it's a real nice day, it's better to play in the morning because by mid day, there is a ton of people out there.
