The course is open to play! And will be (as of now) for the Memorial Day weekend. 32 of the 36 anchors are in, 30 of the 36 tee pads are in, signs are being sandblasted, direction arrows are cut, being primed, and painted, ariel photos have been taken and a map / digital image will soon be available. More bridges over creeks and gully’s are in the works, 4 shoe-cleaning stations will be installed next week, 9 benches, and the mapboard kiosk will be installed by June 15th. Below is a message I have posted at the course. Please read if you are heading out. It is VERY IMPORTANT that people understand that more branches and underbrush will still be removed professionally! I encourage the removal of vines (kudzu etc.… ) anytime, but please leave all other debris (live or dead) for now, for me to remove! I will be working a tractor / bobcat / shovel for the next few months detailing the course; please introduce yourself and ask for a tour if you are in the area! Or show up for the “informal” singles every Sunday at 12:00pm
The Grand Opening is scheduled for Friday July 1st at 6:00pm and July 2nd at 10:00a.m! I am still putting together the details with the parks department, but the plan is going to be casual and fun! No formal tournament! It will include a B.B.Q., ribbon cutting, speeches, prizes, beverages, slide show (before and after pictures), distance demo, and thoughtful goodies for low round, high round, middle round, and special round??? Welcome to the Century Park
Disc Golf Course!
This property and the potential it had for additional recreational opportunities, including a disc golf course was brought to the attention of the Greer Parks and Recreation department in November of 2004 by DISConcepts LLC (of Greenville, South Carolina). The project was awarded a grant for construction in February of 2005. The disc golf course design, clearing, and installation of equipment has been a VERY involved project over the last few months. The result is a much healthier forested area, a tournament quality disc golf course, and a NEW plan to construct a loop of bike trails that will navigate the outer edges of the Century Park boundaries.
The disc golf course has been specially designed to meet the needs of many different levels of players. 2 sets of tee pads (1st throwing area) and 2 sets of basket locations (final targets) have been installed for every hole. This gives players the option of playing many different course configurations. Players will always have the choice of throwing from the long or short tee location, but will also be challenged with different short and long basket locations. (Holes may not always be all short or all long)
Please understand that the construction of the disc golf course and other activities will take time to complete. We appreciate your patience and ask that you DO NOT remove ANY trees, plants, branches, or other major obstacles! If something is in the way of your shot, please take relief (without a penalty) while the course grows into the design. Golfers that disregard the above noted obstacles will be asked to not play the course.
Please also understand that many more additions will be made to the disc golf course. Over the next few weeks, now that the major clearing has been done, the finer details will be installed. Custom sandblasted tee signs, benches, bridges, shoe cleaning stations, and a grand entrance map board to name a few. Look for the Century Park Disc Golf Course to lead the area as a high-end disc golf facility and competitive course!
A few of the tee pads are still under consideration as well as baskets locations. For example, hole # 8 will have elevated tee pads, and hole #17 long and #18 short will have terraced baskets locations. Some of the holes that you may be looking at will have features and obstacles that will challenge your next shot or teach you new throws. Look for the Century Park Disc Golf Course to push the level of disc golf in the Upstate to new heights. There is always a different shot, there is always a different throw, but the hole is always the same hole!.Have fun!
Look for new disc golf programs, leagues, and classes in the near future. The course will be in a constant mode of change for the next few months and will continue to add, remove, soften, edge, trim, and tune the course layout as the designer sees fit. Please respect the thought that has been put into the course and understand that much work will still need to happen before this disc golf course is complete.
The new bike path will ride around the perimeter of the property at times along part of the disc golf fairways. The disc golf course and bike trails will direct bikers in the SAME direction to complete a loop. When a bike rider approaches from behind please allow them to ride on through.
