i don't think very many people would want to play 3 rounds in one day.

Not in one day. There is only going to be three rounds of golf for the weekend so there can be enough time for the other disc events. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

It's not a one day tournament. McCoy can you update that to a two day event. Thanks.
Sounds like fun. i do believe ron and myself are coming down for this one.
I did not see a choice for "N.E. Lions Only". :(
Just a reminder! Top score at States, that isn't a USDGC qualifed player (Myself, Coda, Converse are already qualified) will earn the Oklahoma Represenitive spot at the USDGC in Rock Hill, SC.

As you all may or may not know. Sooner Disc Golf is hosting the OFDSC in Norman this year. We just received our shipment of Champion Fund Raiser INNColor Discs from INNOVA. We are giving the Champion Starfires to our $25 Sponsors and the Champion Aviar Minis to our $10 Sponsors. With the Starfire you will receive a certificate of authenticity with an entry into the INNOVA Sponsorship Rewards Program where you can win INNOVA products all the way up to a spot in the US Disc Golf Championship in South Carolina. You can check out what the discs look like HERE. (http://www.innovadiscs.com/cfr/gallery.html) . We only have 24 Starfires and 50 Minis left. E-mail me if you would like me to hold one for you.. otherwise you can send your sponsorship to: Chris Pierce, 404 Wadsack Dr. Apt. A , Norman, OK 73072. Thanks for supporting the Oklahoma Flying Disc State Championships!

YEA I like Colonial Estates .
As a matter a fact that reminds me alot of courses back home . Mature trees , winding fairways . Colonial estates has been proven to be actually more difficult ( with all the creek OBs ) then NE Lions .
I feel it is a FINE course that has its purpose .
Also its location is very good for all those OU students .
I remember playing that course when it was ONLY 8 Baskets and it has morphed into a good viable course for all levels of players .
OH and Chrispy Thanks for the good wishes at WORLDS .

If the course is playable right now with temp baskets why not have the JDGF event out there instead of Lions? It would not be hard to sketch a map of the course and send the cards out for play, right??

We've got maps on Sooner Disc Golf.com right now. As far as JDGF that is up to Thomas Lowry, the Director of that Series. We are going to have the Sooner Disc Golf Bag Tag Match Play Challenge Final out at Griffin on the 17th, the day after the JDGF event. 11 Temp baskets for 11 holes of Match-Play. The first disc golf event out there. The City has ordered 20 INNOVA DISCatchers (18 holes + 2 Practice) they should be here by the end of the month, hopefully!

Wayne, I believe the club decided that we wouldn't offer a division unless there were at least 3 participants. So we will have you in MM1 until we get 2 others signed up. Remember that we are new at running tourneys so please don't get upset. Let me know what you think about the three participant requirement?
chrispfrisbee
Aug 25 2005, 04:22 PM
BTW.. That's why it wasn't offered as a division on TitleDisc.com. We only put divisions on there we felt we would have 3 or more except maybe for Intermediate Women. The 3 participant requirement is listed on the online entry form at SoonerDiscGolf.com as well.

.
... ah yes ... the often-quoted "gotta have 3 -or- 4 entrants" to make a Division deal ... my opinion : I obviously disagree with this habit ... not just because of my personal division ... I'm the TD who in the 90's had one particular "Glide" (PDGA as always) in which 4 women entered : (1 in each Nov. , Am , Adv , Pro) ... that's what they wanted ; that's what they got ... that's always been my belief ...
.
... further on this specific line : the PDGA issued a memo to TD's (Jan./Feb.2003) which pointed out that "gender or age determined Divisions" should be encouraged to enter & compete & enjoy any PDGA tournament without heed for "mininum-field requirements" ... in other words : all girls & women ; all juniors ; all old guys ...
.
.
... bottom line (and you should apply this to any event you set-up & run ; PDGA or not) : : : never , ever turn away a Player ...
wforest
Aug 25 2005, 06:22 PM
... witness other "PDGA" lately that have had "only 2" in my division ; and even "only 1" competitor in my division ...
.
... if entering & playing were determined by your personal "player rating" , mine would have me playing MA3 (Nov.) (Recreational) ... or MA2 (Am.) (Intermediate) ...
... I choose to stay true to my Division/Rating > MG1 ...
.
.
... everybody else will get "old" someday ...

Griffin has been pimped. The city came out this week and completed the following things:
widened fairways 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, & 17 with the brush hog (Wednesday)
widened the path from 13 to 14 with the brush hog
Mowed the entire course again on Thursday
Cut the fence to make a better looking entrenance on holes 1 & 4
Picked up the piles of trees (10 different piles)
Thank you city of Norman
Coda shot the new course record at the mini on Wed with a 44 (-11). It was rated at 1066. Conditions were perfect. Mitch shot a 47 and there were two 49. This was the first time that more then one person shot below 50.
Went out last night with a laser rangefinder to get better distance readings on the holes. The Griffin Park map has been updated with these measurements. http://www.soonerdiscgolf.com/images/griffinparkmap.pdf (this takes a minute to download: 5 mb)
Make sure you sign up for doubles before 5:45, because at 5:45 we drawing for teams. It is getting dark at about 8:30 so spead of play is important.

Being that this was the first time Norman ran the State Championships I thought they did a tremendous job..."some people" could learn a lot from Norman on how to run tournaments and treat there players (uhh hum "cough" JDGF "cough").
Bummer about PW, maybe it will be a lesson to him in the future...
Great job on Griffin Park, Norman! I liked the course, in a few years Griffin is going to be looking very, very good...thank you Sooner disc golf for doing all the hard work!

I would like to 2nd that MC. This was a very smooth event and we have Dannie and Chrispy to thank. They really stepped up and made it happen. Rounds started on time, results were posted ASAP, and There were zero issues that I am aware of. The weather was enjoyable too bad my game was not.

Thanks guys. I think the only delay we had was with the two field events being pushed to Sunday (MTA & Freestyle). Something about no stereo. This was a great opportunity and learning expierence for SDG.
I think that SDG and the Tulsa club officers need to get together and document what it takes to run the State championships (i.e.. equipment, time for each event, event scoring) that way any club can step up and run this event. I think it would be cool for different clubs to step each year and have this tournament move from city to city.
The big complaint from the weekend was letting Am's play the events both as an AM and a Pro. When we first started the events, each player had to state wether he/she was playing Am or Pro but not both. Some where down the line this changed and they got to play both. Two points to this:
1. Can you play disc golf in both divisions? NO. you have to decide which division you are playing.
2. Just because you are a pro player in disc golf doesn't mean that you are pro in MTA, Freestyle, or DDC. There are a couple of Ams who would kill me in all three of those events. Putting and distance are the only disc golf related events because you are throwing disc golf discs.
I have no problem playing pro in these events because I am playing for pro points that go toward the all around champion, but I don't think it is fair that the Ams had the opportunity to play each event twice in different divisions. I think that when the clubs get together we will find a solution to this.
Please let us know what you thought about ALL THREE courses. The good, bad, and ugly. Griffin Park is a two year project. Our future plans include cement tee boxes, more trees to line the fairways (6, 7, 8, 9, 10), tee signs, benches and a couple other suprises.
You can email us at okstates@soonerdiscgolf.com with questions, concerns, or complaints.
Thanks again for coming out and we hope you had a great time.

... that's always "popped up" each year , Daniel ...
.
... it seems like ya just gotta remind players every year : your Disc-Golf division entered (or PDGA rating) will determine your status in Field Events ... after that statement , we should be able to say "period." ...
.
... but , you get approached with all kinds of "switch-ups" ... suggestions on Rules that I've held to in the past :
... an Am may compete in a Pro Field Event (they earn no points for this) ...
... a Pro may not compete in an Am Field Event (obvious reasons) ...
.
... scenarios occur where there are some Am's who want to compete twice in Field Events (both Divisions) ... either to partner with someone in a "Team Event" -or- they're pretty good at an individual talent and want to try to take "some Pro cash" ... this has been allowed in the past ... IMO , I kinda wish we wouldn't ... if an Am player were allowed to only compete in an Am event , things would probably be simpler ... but they do add to the payout structure for the Pro event -and- many times there are Pro players needing a partner to compete (always at the last-minute, it seems) ...

I don't think there was a problem with people moving up. The problem was with them getting to participate in both divisions.

So where are the State Championships to be held next year
Having the State Championships hosted by different clubs is such an awesome idea. The Houston club thinks "they own" the name Texas states and won't share the title to allow an annual rotation.
The advantages of having an annual rotation are:
1. It keeps the tourney from getting stale
2. Players from different towns will show up and might continue playing else where
3. It avoids a home field advantage
4. Because Oklahoma disc golf and its clubs have the leadership to do it.
I wish the peter-puffers down here would stop arguing over who "owns" the name Texas States, especially considering it's just a disc golf tourney. Oklahoma should be proud of it's tourney b/c it's top notch compared to other state championships.

Sorry for the delay, but I was in the emergency room on Monday morning and then knocked out until Tuesday morning with muscle spasims in my lower back. I had to catch up with school and work yesterday along with actually going to school and work. Thanks for your patience.

What do we need to do to get a disc golf club association with OU, if there is an Ultimate Team should try and bring in students to the clubs or something.
chrispfrisbee
Jan 30 2006, 06:56 PM
All you have to do is find enough students who play and then go to the Center for Student Life and get an application to form a student organization. This is the way Club Teams get started. Actually, there is a program in the works called S.T.E.A.M. which is going to formalize team disc golf play. So you could compete against other colleges, clubs, etc. You should start a OU Student Disc Golf Team Tokyo!! :D

If you want to be the Men's Overall Amateur Champion you have to play most if not all of the field events. Same for Pros.
We need the ladies to step up and represent in the State Championships this year.
We only had FOUR Women in all divisions last year.
One Advanced
Two Intermediate
One Junior
Get involved in the field events as well, you know we will have SWEET trophies for Overall Women's Am and Pro Champions and possibly some Women's Field event trophies but I can't promise until I see I have enough women Pre-Registered in field events! :(

Chris- did you get my e-mail about me trying to organanize some child care for this event? I did not get a reponse, but sometimes my e-mails get filted at work.
If we had that, would more women play? Any constructive feed back/suggestions/names of people who can be trusted with children..from anyone would be helpful.
I am still waiting for a list from Tinker Child Development Center with names of certified daycare providers. (mostly military spouses, but I don't think there are many in the Norman area)

I didn't get that email. But that is a good idea. I was toying around with renting a MoonBounce or similar and having a kid FUN ZONE where the kids could be entertained for an couple of hours with one or two adults supervising. What do you all think? It would work for single dads as well, or let both parents play. ;)
Wammy
Feb 21 2006, 03:16 PM
Good idea!
I've been in touch with a TD that is offering child care at their event, and one thing parents have said is that having child care at the course may not work, because if the kids see their parent(s) they may throw a fit. Or if the kid is crying it would be distracting to the parents and other players.
Maybe someone that lives near the course could volunteer their home.
I am not saying volunteer (as in no money) to babysit- see how many parents are interested in this and then see what people are willing to pay. I would volunteer, but I was to play!!!

No one has any comments or suggestions regarding childcare? If no one is interested, I don't want to put a lot of time into it.
I think the "Fun Zone" would be good for older kids. Bouncey Castles aren't cheap though- I called a place on Tinker that rents them: Pick it up Sat Morning and return Mon morning it is $103.50- (comes with blower, stakes, ext cord) There is also a refundable $100 deposit.
One day rental (out by 8am in by 4:30 = $51.75)

I think it's a great idea and would love to take advantage of such a thing, but it'll probably be a few years before my kids are old enough that I'd feel comfortable with leaving them anyone besides my inlaws. I'm just freaky that way, though. Definitely not a reflection on the character of my fellow DGers /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I'm telling you both.....You need to get a remote control to handle those kids.
I would do it but I am only authorized to babysit kids that know how to talk and can play video games. I tried babysitting for my sisters kids when they were real young but I kept falling asleep on the job. Too many horseyback rides I guess. :(
