I am going to be participating in my first Ice Bowl this weekend, and I was curious what every one out there does to prepare for them. It's going to be in Iowa. I figure I would at least wear layers of clothes and pull all my white discs from my bag. Ya know, the pretty obvious stuff. :p

Get some hand warmers, make sure you have a couple of towels. If it's really cold put hot water in a water bottle so it will not freeze so fast. Make sure your discs are cold. If you keep them inside then put them in a warm car then throw them in the snow, the snow will stick to them. Make sure you keep your feet warm and dry. Silicone spray your boots and wear gore-tex socks if you have them. And one more thing, some good whiskey will help you keep warm.

I'll do like I do every year here in central Texas:

I'll put on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. I might slide on a pair of lightweight wind pants for the morning round or to warm up in.

I grab my bag of discs (all colors are welcome), a few extra cans of food, and head over to the park for a day of disc golf camaraderie and friendly competition.

By the second round Ill be down to shorts and my t-shirt on a typical 68-72 degree afternoon.

For the life of me, I cant figure out why they call this thing the ice-bowl

At the last Ice Bowl I ran the top pros were preparing for it by doing jaeger-bombs at the bar. Whenever you can, run your Icebowl somewhere with a bar and a liquor license. That was a well attended event!

Hand warmers are key. If you can't feel your fingers it is very hard to control the disc.

I'm not sure how all yours go, but at Dela we do 54 straight holes. There is no designated break, but having a second, third, and fourth towel, set of socks, sweater at the parking lot can help quite a bit.

Take most of your discs out of your bag, get down to your main 5, and use the extra space for dry towles in Zip freezer bags. Keep the towels in bags, or they're useless after 4 holes. Some people wrap a plastic grocery pr trash bag on the outside of there bag as an extra liner, plus it looks Ghetto-fabulous. :D

If you don't have gortex outer socks yet ...get some.... :D Good quality light weight gear is worth every penny.

A little brandy can help you feel warm, a little too much might not help your putting :o

One last trick. We got it from DGWN some years back, and it works great. It's more for multi day events. If you're shoes are soaked at the end of the day, tear up strips of newspaper and lightly fill your shoes at night. Don't pack too tight. In the AM when you take the paper out, it will be wet, and your shoes will be dry
:D

Stay relaxed but focused. Have fun.
