Hi everyone...I am new to this DISCussion board and thrilled I have finally found a SERIOUS forum for exchanging information of the best sport in the world. I was very briefly a touring professional (even won one once in Roland Park, MD), until I popped a hammy, then it was all over. I still religiously follow the sport and was searching for any information on an up and comer named Scott Waterfall. I have seen only glimpses of his game, but not only does it seem that he has mad skills, he is not too hard on the eyes (if you know what I mean).
The great thing about the PDGA athletes is that they are very modest and grounded. Whether they are chucking pizzas (I invented this term) on the course, or just doing their day jobs of bagging groceries in high end grocery stores, they always have time for their fans.
Any info would be great.
I played with Scott Waterfall last year when I crammed in a tournament between writing my doctoral thesis and teaching young chimps to rescue lost kittens. I think he's from upstate New York. He's a barrel of fun, but he's not very good. He could only throw about 450 compared to my 580 or so. I do think he'll make a pretty big splash though. Welcome to the board, your enthusiasm and intelligence will fit in nicely. LaTTer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
there sure seems to be a lot of people claiming they can throw over 550 feet on this message board. my guess would be maybe half who say that actually can. 550 is a very long ways.

No doubt, I have only thrown that far in the air like 10 times in my life.

I like how this guy directly correlates distance with being "good".

I'm not sure what course you are referring to. There is a Roland Park, but it is located in Akron, Pennsylvania. (That is between Lancaster and Reading in the southeast portion of the state)

Texas is the state of the big arm and I only know of 5 or 6 people around here that can throw 550'

Just to clarify, I am definetly not one of them. I have a nice mediocre 450' and that is fine by me. 5 or 6 should include the whole state. I can only think of 2 people in DFW that can bust 550'. Guess who that may be? Hint: they are doubles partners. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I doubt I've ever seen a Texas disc golfer throw 550 in the air during a golf round. I did see Clayton throw an amazing shot that was an incredible sky bomb and have seen crushes by all the Texas greats, but 550 (on the course at least) is phenomenal.

Saw Robbie Bratten kill a drive, from an elevated tee (Wilmont #16 ~ 600'). Pin high and 100' right. He 4'd the hole.
Then on a less elevated platform, he and Ware and Jimmy Discraft boomed some shots that easily cleared 500'...LOSO 2003 Distance Competition.

I've never heard of this Waterfall character. Is he an am?
I was both overjoyed and saddened by the sudden reappearance of Harry Merkin in my life. I recall days spent as a youth watching the great Harry Merkin deliver an eye popping drive which I know for a fact were routinely measured at 650 feet PLUS! Merkin did indeed coin the phrase tossing the pizza: In point of fact, for a brief time, my young friends and I used the delicious phraseology of Mr. Merkin for our own games: i.e. Man you really put some pepperoni on that one! wed exclaim excitedly when one of our playing partners winged a disc especially wickedly! Or, a bad throw was inevitably followed by the sing-song: Man that was a real pineapple and sardine! The great thing about a Merkin throw was not just its majestic beauty but the power with which it descended through the air! I recall one throw by Mr. Merkin went off target and actually knocked a porcelain kitty off the roof of a trailer home adjacent to the course!
My sadness came from recalling the day my Pops woke me to tell me that Mr. Merkin had indeed popped a hammy at a municipal course not far from our family farm. Legends die hard they say, and the legend of Harry Merkin died hardest of all that fateful dayWe will never see his like again my dear disc throwing friends so may I suggest that we raise a champagne-filled disc to Mr. Merkin and salute him for his brief but shining contribution to our sport. They say that horse racing is the Sport of Kings and if that is so, then tomorrow I shall toss a disc in your honor kind sir because you are the horse of this sport, of course, of course
But I digress: My point in posting today is to ask other players of the sport if they are as put off as I am by the overwhelming preponderance of dog droppings on our playing fields? I have taken to carrying a large 5 gallon jug of hand sanitizing gel and rags in my disc bag and seem to have to clean off my discs after every third or fourth holeFurther, I have taken to wearing surgical gloves as an added precaution against the scourge of feces found on the average playing courseMay I inquire with other posters here as to what their own particular precautions are if any? I would like to think that I am not alone in my disdain for doodyWhile it makes for a lovely fertilizer, it typically wrecks havoc with my sandals and is quite distracting while lining up putts! And frankly, there is nothing more distasteful than trying to eat a PB&J sandwich prepared by my mum with feces-covered surgical gloves on a hot summers day

Dogs on the course,in my opinion, is terrible.
So is Merkin Bagger Vance or something? Shoeless Joe ?

very kewl post (the first part) not sure on the dog topic however. regardless i will toast mr.merkin , a beer from here will be raised in his honor!! what plastic was he throwing anyway?
God bless you, Bixby, but of course I am not deserving of such high praise.
I think that I have found a soulmate, one who is more concerned about the true zen of the sport, rather than assessing distances off the tee. A pox on those who equate distance to talent!!!
Hey Bix, I will invite you to contact me directly, as I feel we have alot in common. Boy, would I love to have you to my local course, where after a relaxing round, we could retire to my local gym, where we could take a steam, followed by some rigorous moisturization (my gym offers gratis Jergens).
Anyway, let me know, I could pick you up...just got my license back and picked up a cherry 1999 Alero with all the tricks.
Hopefully, all you distance-envied skunks can learn from Bix, who indeed is not afraid to let the sport wash over him, and sing the battle cry of all discers - 'Gambled and Lost'

There's an intersting story behind that name...anyone else know what it is?
A merkin is in most dictionaries. There was a guy, like a Harry Merkin or something, and he designed, over 100 years ago, what is basically a pubic toupee.

The Merkin was probably more successful since his first name was Harry, versus say Bear or Patch.
SYLLABICATION: merkin
PRONUNCIATION: mrkn
NOUN: A pubic wig for women.
ETYMOLOGY: Alteration of obsolete malkin, lower-class woman, mop, from Middle English, from Malkin, diminutive of the personal name Matilda.

This thread is funny :D
My heart soars to hear -once again- the name of The Great Harry Merkin. He was the first big-arm that I saw throw over 500 feet with a Midnight Flyer. Why, I still remember the glory days playing tournaments at Roland Park, MD. (of course, that was before they moved the park to Akron, Pa.)
Anyway, there we were at Roland Park, MD., wingin' the pepperoni off the pizza as it approached late afternoon, when Bixby griplocked his "orange traffic cone color" #1 Flyer into oncoming traffic, knocking off this guy's windshield wiper, almost causing an accident. Fortunately, the driver was a disc golfer on his way to play a round, and he had a spare windshield wiper in his glovebox.
But, to be honest :D, the greatest disciple of The Great Harry Merkin has to be Scott Waterfal. (his name was previously misspelled, it has only one "L") That guy can really "Whip the Cow Chip". (i invented that term) The most surprising part of his physique (other than his ears) is his arm, which is as long as Stokely's. This is surprising, as he stands 5 feet 1",wears a size 29 pant and wears a size 7 shoe.
I am curious as to what has become of one other Zen brother of The Great Harry Merkin. I am speaking of the ignominious Malarky. Has anybody seen him? Is he still playing in the rec division?
And to The Great Harry- glad to hear that you got your license back, big guy. That was an unfortunate situation you were stuck in. Just remember in the future, when the hitchiker is naked and under 16, pass up the temptation, dont pick him up.

Bixby,
I think I have an old newsletter from the east coast with an article about you guys.
It seems there was an event " disc golfers for NAMBLA" or something like that.
You guys played the 1st round in a threesome with Richard Beninya. If I rememebr right there was a big argument and you guys wound up stroking each other.
During the 2nd round you and Harry paired up again and wound up playing with Neal and Bob.
I believe there were some records broke during that round, but cant remember what they were, Do you?
