With the new rules change I can still play 16 and under. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif :D/msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

rhett
Jan 28 2005, 02:22 PM
That was a butchered explanation of the rule change, and it will cause confusion. :(

The division is not "16 and under". This is why not: if you are sixteen and turn 17 in September, you cannot play the divsion even though you are 16 years old.

The change makes it difficult to give the Junior divisions meaningful names.

the_kid
Jan 28 2005, 04:23 PM
So if I turn 16 next month could I play at worlds? Sorry if I messed the rule up.

Archemike

I turn 17 in October...
I can still play 16 and under right?

rhett
Jan 28 2005, 05:56 PM
Nope.

From http://www.pdga.com/documents/td/05PlayerDivisionsGridFinal.pdf

Age 19 & Under MJ1 FJ1 Born 1986 or later
Age 16 & Under MJ2 FJ2 Born 1989 or later
Age 13 & Under MJ3 FJ3 Born 1992 or later
Age 10 & Under MJ4 FJ4 Born 1995 or later

The divsision names are wrong, as all players 19 and under cannot play on MJ1 or FJ1.

The reality is that the divisions are "Under 19" and "Under 16" etc., except that you can still play the division for the rest of the year after you turn the age of 19/16/13/10.

I think it makes it very difficult to explain what is going on in these divisions, and it will lead to kids playing in divisions that they are not, by rule, allowed to.

Megan is in the same boat. She is 16 right now, but she cannot play in the "16 and Under" division because she was born in 1988, and the rule says "born 1989 or later". So the name of division is wrong, because the division name is "16 and under" and Megan is 16 yet she is ineligible to play in that division.

idahojon
Jan 29 2005, 01:14 AM
So let her play advanced wimmin's division.

rhett
Jan 29 2005, 01:39 AM
Jon, you are a BOD member. Does it make any sense that a 16 year old cannot play in the "16 and under" division?

I think the rule change with the name change is bad because of the confusion factor. I would say leave it as it was: Under-10, under-13, under-16, under-19. If your birthday happens to fall in the middle of Worlds, deal with it.

vwkeepontruckin
Jan 29 2005, 02:58 AM
So my birthday is 7-12-86. Am I elgible to play Juniors?

idahojon
Jan 29 2005, 03:22 AM
Does it make any sense that a 16 year old cannot play in the "16 and under" division?

No more or less sense than the fact that a 39 year old can play in Masters. Our older age divisions use that "birth year" logic, so why would the kids be different?

The decision was made to align the age categories with WFDF.

As for me, I'm just trying to make it to Seniors.

rhett
Jan 30 2005, 06:13 PM
Because Masters isn't sub-titled "39 and Over...except some 39 year olds aren't allowed."

idahojon
Jan 31 2005, 12:19 AM
No, it's subtitled, "if you turn 40 at anytime during this year, you are 40 all year long."

And NOW for juniors, it's "if you turn (insert age here), you are that age all year long."

Just aligning things at the top and bottom.

I know Megan got bit by the old rule at World's last year, and she's getting bit again this year. If the change had happened last year or next year, things would be different for her, but any other number of kids would have been affected. The change was made for conformity, and for a year will have a ripple effect.

rhett
Jan 31 2005, 03:01 PM
Please don't make it sound like I have something against this rule because of how it affected my family! That's not it at all, so let's just leave Megan out of this whole thing. She wanted to play in the Advanced division in Iowa, so that fact that her birthday was the Friday before Worlds made no difference. We went to Miami in '02 to give her a shot at the under-16 title, and that was fine. And she isn't getting "bit" this year, either.

What I really don't like, and I wish you would address this please, is that right here on this PDGA web-site the junior divisions have "word name" that say "19 and under", "16 and under", "13 and under", and "10 and under".

Those word-names are wrong.

Those wrong word-names are going to have people like Megan playing in the wrong division, because the word-name says "16 and under" so the player and the TDs will read it as such and say "You're 16, you're good to go."

I don't know what the fix is. Maybe keep the "Under-xx" word-name and then allow people to continue to play "under" division for the rest of the year after their birthday? It takes awkward language because it an awkward thing to implement.

I don't know that it's necessary, because I've got a daughter who has a birthday right around the time Words every year and we have never felt like we got "bit" or "screwed" by the old rule. It was just the way it was.

idahojon
Jan 31 2005, 08:52 PM
Even though she hasn't yet reached her 17th birthday, the definition is that you take the age you turn anytime during the calendar year.

So, Megan is now 17 for competition purposes. She doesn't qualify for the 16 and under division even if by actual birthdate she is still 16. She is now in the 19 and under division.

I don't see why those division names don't work.

TD's just need to be educated about the "whole-year" issue. Maybe it's a database thing that can be done.

Like I said in another post, the other WFDF sports do it this way, so we are trying to conform.
