Hello everyone and welcome to the beginning phase of the PDGAs Best Practices Initiative. The goal of this initiative is to gather and make available some of the great contributions small and large from the wealth of experiences within the disc golf community. This process will be ongoing and refined from time to time with the end result becoming a collective of information with the intended purpose of facilitating the communication of great ideas from great disc golf thinkers world-wide.
I am requesting information from our members with the hope that good ideas and good practices will provide an example and springboard for future development. The following are examples of the types of responses we are looking for, and is not a complete list. Feel free to answer as few or as many as you feel would contribute to the aforementioned goals, and have fun!
Running a Tournament
-What simple/grandiose tasks contributed to overall enjoyment/turnout of your event?
-What did you learn from past mistakes and how did you fix these mistakes?
-How were you able to raise money for an event in an exciting/new way?
-What were some ways in which potential sponsors were approached/convinced of their necessity to sponsor/support your event?
Running a Disc Golf Club
-What things does your local club do that make it the best club in the country?
-What are examples of ways you went about getting new members/new disc golfers?
-In what ways does your clubs organization/constitution contribute to an overall good experience for those involved?
-What kind of weekly/monthly events have worked exceptionally well?
- How were you able to raise money for your club? Whats the best way to get merchandise for your members? Have you created an innovative way to sell discs/equipment to members and non-members alike?
-How often does your club meet? What do you talk about? How do you encourage the participation of many members?
-Does your club have an unique/interesting idea for a newsletter? What things have worked? What has failed?
-What steps has your club taken to achieve non-profit status? How has this benefited your club/community? What are the drawbacks to this type of organization?
-Do you have experience with assisting a High School/University getting a disc golf club established?
Disc Golf Courses
-Why is your local course the greatest in the country?
-What were some of the largest obstacles to getting your course installed, and how did you work around these?
-What is interesting/unique about your course that is man/woman-made? (Cool, interesting signage? First tee welcome centers? Good hang-out somewhere on the course?)
-How have you worked especially well with the Parks Board concerning course maintenance/expansion?
Making Disc Golf FUN
-Whats an outstanding non-sanctioned event, and what made it so fun?
-Whats an interesting way youve experiment with playing format that increased the general enjoyment of your event? (Doubles/Team Play/Goofy Points)
Were looking for the gritty details that no one really thought about before, which seem so simple looking back. The responses can be as simple as Have extra pencils on hand at registration or as complex as a framework of your entire World Championship event and the related distribution of work (an example from the 2004 Iowa Worlds is available upon request). Keep in mind that the above is just a suggested list of ideas; feel free to contribute as much or as little to this project.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read and respond to these inquiries. Please pass this info on to anyone who you feel may have something to say.
