or under?
I keep trying index out, but it just doesn't feel right. Right now the third knuckle of my index is on the edge of the rim

Putt with the first knuckle of your putting hand resting on the bead of the putter. Never fully extend your finger on the edge of the disc. You dont do this because from day to day your index finger will either be stiffer or more relaxed depending on the day and it will throw off your putt one way or the other depending on if it is stiff or loose that day. I was at putting clinic with Cam Todd who i think is the best putter in the world and he said NEVER putt your index finger on the leading edge of the disc. He said it for the exact reason i just explained above.
I fan grip all my putts and have the crease of my first knuckle on my index finger resting on the bead of the putter.
I dont think i know or have seen 1 touring pro have his index finger resting out on the leading edge of his putter and I always say "If the pros dont do it its not even worth trying" :D
I putt with the knuckle farthest away from my hand on my index finger curled under the rim of the disc and the rest of my index finger on the outside edge. The rest of my fingers are in a fan grip. It's basically the grip I've used to throw a disc since I was little.

I agree with posters in general that finger under the rim is probably best for most putters and most putts.
However, there are certain styles of putts where it could be advantageous to have the finger outside the rim. Mainly they are of the type where you sorta roll the disc off your index finger during the putt, with the index finger perhaps pushing against the outside of the rim. These styles are rare tho.
There is also the option of having your index finger ALONG the underside of the rim, as opposed to it CROSSING the rim, which I think is the most common option. You might want to experiment with that too.
To summarize, there's more than one way to skin a cat, but there is a sort of consensus on the subject, and you should probably go with the consensus until you're smart enough and good enough to think for yourself.
Anyone putt with a birdie grip? (Same as power grip only middle finger is under plate and not on rim) I use power grip for everything except for semi close midrange shots and almost all shots with a putter, i use the birdie for those.
I always putt with my index finger on the bottom of the rim. The rest of my fingers are spread out underneath the flight plate. I think its called the fan grip. I think this is the most common type of putting grip.

I use an oddball grip that I haven't seen anyone else use. I put my index finger forward along the outer rim, I point my middle finger into the middle of the underside of the disc, and I bend my ringer finger against the inner rim of the disc. I guess it's a variation of the birdie grip.

Fan grip here, with first digit of the index finger halfway under the rim of the disc.
Fan here too with index finger under rim. I was putting with my index finger on the rim then was shown the other way. Much easier to control the disc.

I have my index finger on the outside of the disc, I also do not have my pinkie involved at all. Putting used to be my strongest part of my game :D
finger on rim with fan grip for me.
finger on rim with fan grip for me.
for me too putting and upshots
I always have putted with my index finger resting on the rim, I had never ever thought about putting itunder the rim like everyone here is talking about, I tried it yesterday and found that not having it on the rim is quite helpful and sets you up for a cleaner release... thanks for the advice :D
