What's up all my fello disc golfers!

I am wondering if you guys and gals can help me out. Late last summer we finished installation of the first phase (11 holes) on Kewaunee County's first disc golf course! We had the baskets in until late November when they were pulled to make way for skiing on the hill. When we return in spring 2005, we definitely want to finish the total proposed layout and install all 18 holes. What I would like is for anyone that is interested, to please take a look through the webpage in my signature. There are plenty of pictures from the tees and additional shots of some proposed holes. Then, feel free to offer any comments you have about the course or it's future potential.

You see, the Winter Park Disc Golf Club will have raised enough money to buy and install the remaining baskets as well as continue with course improvements like signs and better tee areas, BUT we still need to convince the county that this is a worthy venture before we get the go-ahead. If you respond here I can link the County Parks Director to this thread to see just how the disc golf community feels about the potential of Winter Park Disc Golf. Or feel free to contact him or myself via email listed in the webpage. Disc Golf is a fairly unknown sport to the local community and we have our hands full getting the locals out to enjoy the beautiful setting, but with comments from experienced discers, it may provide that extra push to get 18 in the ground.

Thanks a TON! And I hope my webpage doesn't crash!

I look forward to playing Kewaunee. From the pics, it looks like fun elevation changes and clean fairways. Nice! Gotta wait until April, huh? Is the closest course the small one in Forest Junction?

Superberry I can't wait to come up there and play the course (driving up from Madison Area) Hopefuly I can make it up there this summer or fall. I like the looks of the proposed holes through the woods. By adding those extra holes I'll definitly play it. My discs love those trees

Keep us updated on the progress

Dear County Parks Director,

Thank you for supporting disc golf by providing your current 11 hole course. Please consider the following when deciding whether or not to add the remaining holes.

When I choose to travel to play disc golf I rarely select a course with fewer than 18 holes for the following reasons:
Courses with more holes can handle more golfers. Just like ball golf courses, if the front 9 in backed up you can go off on the back 9 instead.
Disc golf is a faster game than ball golf. 18 holes of disc golf can normally be played in 60-90 minutes. This allows disc golfers to play multiple rounds in a relatively short period of time. Fewer holes can create boredom even with multiple tees.

It will be difficult to hold tournaments, events, and club outings at your course because of the limited number of holes. It will be these types of gatherings that will help draw new people to your course.

To quote one of my favorite movies (Field of Dreams), Build it and they will come. Just build it right.

Again thank you for your support of disc golf.

klemrock, the closest courses are the other "Lakeshore" courses, Two Rivers and Manitowoc, all the Green Bay courses are just about 30 minutes away. I play Forest Junction all the time because it is insane with trees and hitting all those trees just lightens the mood. Plus it is a beautiful little park. It only takes 50 minutes or so on the backroads from Kewaunee.

tinfoil, I can't wait to get the wooded holes in (that's why I'm trying this thread in addition to all the pleading I do to the County). I hear your course is Baraboo, and I love it! I'd go head up there all the time when I used to live in Dane and Middleton. I LOVE those trees.

When Winter Park finally lays out the 18 hole course, it will include 7 new, and tightly wooded, technical holes (see Other Pictues on my site and the Aerial Map for the full layout). This will create the PERFECT balance. Winter Park will have long open holes, 150 foot elevation on 4 holes (down 3, up 1), tight woods, water hazards, all on a BEAUTIFUL piece of land.

I had initially designed and proposed a course at a different county park, but the county actually turned me to Winter Park. Man, am I glad they did, it could be AWESOME! And, it can support well over 36 holes!

I just sent some mail to Mr.Mark Kanz of the Kewaunee Parks and Rec. Dept. in support of getting all 18 holes installed next summer. I wish you all the luck with getting this accomplished. If I can help out with the course at all next Spring, PM me, I'd be glad to help anyway I can.

Two things:

A) http://www.discgolfassoc.com/newstestimony.html maybe this article will help. It's not exactly written on the personal level, but if you have some committee members who are unfamilar with the sport, then this would be a good segue way into your proposal.

B) I could provide a more formal statement if you'd like, but that fact that when we're planning our trip, we look for 18'ers, the ones that are half finished says something about the park's committment to the sport. We're not gonna drive across two states to play a course thats only put together half [*****]. So chainiac definetely has a valid point with attracting more/new discers.

elite, I've provided many of the resources available on the internet for the board members to look through and become more familiar with the sport.

AND, it's not a matter of Kewaunee County not supporting the course, they really do. I proposed 3 options - all 18, 9, or the current 11 because they were part on the 18 and didn't require any clearing. Given my proposal, some limited info about the sport, and few pictures, and some other supporting information, the board voted to go ahead and fund construction of the 11 holes. It was quick, I've been involved with board decisions that took forever, but the county really does want to see the course succeed. The only problem is a lack of players in the immediate area, and the fact that it is only 11 is not attracting as many travelling players. The county does support the course, but wants to see it prove its worth. I argue that a full 18 will help this point much better. Plus, this time we are not asking the county to fund the project (unless of course they want to). We have raised enough money to install 18 baskets with natural tees (because of winter skiing) and simple signs at a minimum. From there, as the course picks up players and continues to expand, so will all the improved tees signs and other ammenities.

Please don't confuse this as non-support by the county, they fully support this. It would just be nice to get the go-ahead for a full 18 as a trial, especially if the remaining baskets pose no financial risk. I'm looking to show the County the level of interest in the completed course through fellow disc golfers simply viewing the possibilities on the website.

Alright, I'm just used to the City Council in my hometown refusing to even put in cement tees, let alone another course in town. The one we have is sooo over crowded, and another course in town would be awesome. There are a few proposed places/parks, but nobody is willing to put enough time and effort to spear-head the proposal. I guess until then, we're stuck with the awesome one we got now.

Is there something else we can do? What if the Appleton Area Disc Club came over and held an event? Maybe a Club(Pro)/AM event. Invite locals to the course and pair them up with Club members. Set up some temporary holes with portable baskets. If not enough locals show up then just run a random doubles tourney or something. Maybe Dave, from the Flying Fortress, would be interested in putting something together too. First step is putting something together. Second step is promoting it in the Kewaunee area.

Just an idea :D.

chaniac, the temp baskets on the course is a great idea for the grand opening tournament, and to show the county board members the possibility. I have been working with Ken of the AADGC on possibly running a league out here on Thursdays, but only if we have 18 baskets in. Otherwise I'd still be open to just gathering out at the park for some fun on Thursday anyway. If the members of teh AADGC had enough baskets (only need 6 or 7) to make a full 18, that would be great and I'd be glad to have you guys involved. I am going to plan on getting the 11 in the ground as soon as I can in spring, then work on some clearing of the additional holes in case we run a tourny with the temp baskets. Cool!

So, All of you disc golf maniacs out there. If we put portable baskets (like Discatchers, DB5, and such, NOT the canvas ones) up for the remaining 7 holes, how many would be intersted in coming out for an event or even leagues? I'd make sure the community and also voting county members were in attendance to see how fun the full 18-hole course can be, and what variety it provides.

I'd make the 120-mile drive for a tourney, even with SkillShot baskets. :DYou sound very committed to this course, and it does sound fun.

Winter Park has received the WDSA course development grant! Now if I can get together a few more sponsorships and work on the County to allow a permanent 18, we'll hopefully have them in soon before too much of the summer passes by.

Hey guys, I am going to work along with the AADGC to hold a grand opening tournament with 18 holes (probably temp baskets). If we have a permanent 18, I was thinking about running leagues on Thursdays (same as AADGC Wednesdays are run). You know any number of players that would be interested and travelling to kewaunee for leagues?

Also, once the snow melts and the hill dries, I am going to get 10 of the 11 back in (1 will be moved off the hill and into the woods, TBD). Are any of you interested in coming out and helping with the setup, playing a round, and walking down a good layout for the two remaining loops of holes? Email me (from my webpage) if you are interested and I'll keep in touch.

Kewaunee's pins will be going back in some time in April (I need to keep an eye on the wetness of the hill). I have 10 baskets to put up in existing sleeves. I need to move one sleeve and create a new hole (which requires digging a new hole). Anyone want to volunteer putting the course back in and then play a round and some of the fun safari holes? Anyone OWN a hole auger? THAT WOULD BE NICE!!!!!!!

I may also need some help clearing the fairways and digging holes for the remaining 7 baskets that may go in yet this summer.

I will be putting the pins back in for the Winter Park Course in Kewaunee on Saturday April 30th. The course will still be a little wet and muddy, but it is time to get moving. Mud washes off.

I may possibly have the baskets in earlier, but will be at the course most of the day on Saturday anyway, playing, cleaning, setting out new equipment, clearing some new holes, etc.

If any of you guys would like to show up and help and of course PLAY, you're more than welcome too. If I know there will be a fair amount of people coming out, I can get the keys to the chalet so we can have bathroom access and maybe get some Nesco's going with some food and whatnot.

The course will remain in the 11 hole format as it existed last year. Feel free (and encouraged) to bring portable baskets if you come out. We can set them up on the unfinished 7 remaining holes and show what the course will be in the future.

Let me know if you plan to show up, my contact info can be found at the website listed in my sig.

Hey superberry, as you know, we just took our Disc Trip to WI, and we stopped in Kewaunee to play Winter Park. There was an up and a down side. The upside was that it had excellent signage and nice baskets. The downside was that it was not mowed at all. The grass was as tall as the baskets in some cases! (hole 6 i believe) + Throughout our entire trip we didn't encounter any bugs, except on this course. The fact that it was 90 out with like an 80% humidity, but we were all in agreement that it would be a very nice course with just a little maintenance. I do realize that it is a new course, and from the drive, not exactly the closest to things (good thing we had good directions to it). But we just wanted to drop our opinion out there. Like I said, we all agreed it'd be an excellent little course with just a little more maitenance.
