Heres the deal, one of my CE Rocs are coming off the wall,Which do you think is the better disc since I ve never thrown a CE or Champion Roc.01, 02, 03, 04, or the 05.Im leaning towards the 02 since I dont think I can bring myself to throw the 01.or are they pretty much the same ,and I should just get the 05 for throwing when it comes out

Jan 18 2005, 02:31 PM
the 05 would be my choice only if it were 177+. otherwise i would have to go with heavier one.

Jan 18 2005, 02:33 PM
aren't 05 USDGC CE Rocs out already?
I think I have one...

IMHO THe 01 is the best ever made. Whether you want to throw a $250.00 disc is up to you. I do but I also have a lrage stash of them. The 02's fly like Super Rocs so I would save that and splurge on a SE Roc. The 03, 04 and early release 05's all fly very similar. The 04 Glow Rocs are the closest thing to an 01 but there is no substiture for the 01.

Jan 18 2005, 02:36 PM
it matters what you like... what roc do you throw regularly?
the 01,02, and 03 are the blunter nosed ones and fly somewhat straighter with less fade, the 04 and 05 rocs are the newer sharper nosed mold, which flys a tad bit more overstable, and you also have to remember that all of these rocs will fly somewhat more overstable than a dx rancho because the champion material makes everything more overstable...

'01s are overstable pigs!

Jan 18 2005, 02:46 PM
really? i don't own one (just know they were made from blunt rancho mold). is it because of the early plastic or are they flatter? are they more overstable than a 05 or 04 (seem very overstable for a roc)?

Yeah I got the 05 from USDGC,I mean when zonedriven starts selling them in February. My first Roc was DX then I went to the 04 worlds super Roc but I found both to be a little understable

Jan 18 2005, 02:51 PM
'01s are quite flat and probably the most overstable Roc of them all.

Jan 18 2005, 02:55 PM
i want one!

You better get one now while the finance rates are relativly low :D

When I was throwing one I was always amazed that is was more overstable than any of my other Rocs, yet it had more glide and went farther also. Which is the opposite of what happens with more overstability in almost every other case.

I would agre with Rhett. Outside of my 8X Rocs it is consistantly the farthest flying Roc I have ever thrown. The nice thing about them is when new, you can rip them on a mean hyzer line and thye do not turn over. It can have a very different flight path to many other Rocs. They are very complimentrary to less stable Rocs.

Is the plastic in an Ontario Roc hard or on the softer side?

hard old school DX though not as hard as the really old stuff.

Jan 18 2005, 07:51 PM
Id say throw the '01 myself, I LOVE mine and throw it often. Then again it doesnt hurt to have a backup :D

As long as you dont lose it, I think the '01 will last for a VERY long time. Im not so sure about the others since I havent thrown them yet, although I have '03 and '04 Ce Rocs.

I'd go with the Z-Wasp - same disc and much cheaper

I am by no means a Discraft hater. Half my bag is comprised of Discraft plastic. I think they make some kick ***** stuff but the Z Wasp while comparable is not the same as an 01 CE Roc. IT is certainly a more sane purchase from a monetary perspective, but they are not the same. They may compare to the 03, o4 or 05 but not the 01's.

Jan 18 2005, 08:32 PM
I have a 04 and 05 Roc and a CryZtal Z Wasp, and they're nothing alike, really, the Wasp seems quite a bit more overstable and somewhat shorter, could just be the cryztal plastic though, but isn't it just Z with zero pigment?

I keep an 01 CE, 9x, Ontarios and sometimes an 8X in my bag...I love the old Ontarios..much better plastic but have more of a dome top than rocs now...the 01 CE is the best Roc ever made...I got mine at the AM worlds in 01 and have kept it in my bag ever since..its just now getting to be neutral but still can hold a great hyzer line..but I wouldnt go pay big bucks just to have one..get another ear or a Z Wasp....the poor mans CE Roc :)

Sell the 04 on Ebay and get 5-10 KC or DX Rocs...or wait to get an 05 to throw in Feb.
No sense in throwing any disc valued over $50 unless you have alot of backups or have alot of money to spend....
But then again they were made for throwing, heck, I would have already thrown all of them as soon as I got them so I wouldn't have this problem, hahaha.
Cheers,
Matt

2001 is the best ROC ever made, however if you don't feel like throwing a prized collectible there are 2 alternatives that don't have Discraft stamped on them.

The 04 Glo ROC and there were a small batch of 05's that are as close as you can come. The 05's are the white ones or the limited number of opaque red ones.

Jan 19 2005, 11:43 AM
i throw a 166g white 05 roc. i hand picked it at usdgc and it is completely flat. no dome at all. when i started to throw it i found it to be suprisingly straight, barely ay fade at all. its not a roc to throw over 300 but its perfect around 275. i also throw a 179 ppink 05 roc. this roc is STABLE. but i can still throw it 300'. it has a suprising glide and may be another alternative to a 01 roc

Jan 19 2005, 02:12 PM
My 05 is quite stable and I can throw it much farther than my 10x, 8x, etc., but I'd still like to try a 01 roc (supposedly most stable and fartherst flying, most glide, etc...)

everyone seems to say that they're sooo much better, is this really true?

also, if so, does anyone have a good used condition or x-out or something theyd sell me fairly cheap?

First off, to get one thing staight, the only reason I opened this thread is that Moolie is a buddy of mine, and I monitor what he says! :D
In all honesty though, if the 01 Roc is "The greatest Roc of all times", how come Barry, Kenny, Schwey, ect.... don't throw them? Come to think of it, I've never seen any of the top INN guys throw one. They all have there San Marino's and Ontario's, but no 2001's. I have to believe, they all have a few stashed away. I havnt thrown Inn for over 8 years and I have a few stashed away. :D
Kinda like the Sticker Magnets. They are the best of all time IMO and many others, and Myself, Ron, Randolph, Cam, and many others all carry/throw them.
Just curious.

sticker magnets? please explain. Thanks

Timmy. please explain these "sticker magnets".

Timmy is refering to the Proto Magnets that have the hand written weight sticker on the bottom. They are the best Magnets produced if you ask a fan of Magnets .

As far as why the Top Innova guys dont throw them I think it is two fold. Many sold the ones they had when the price went sky high on them. I saw Barry, Todd Branch and Al Schack selling them on E-bay. Most top disc golfers do not make that much cash. Most of the people that throw them are people like me that scooped up a bunch in 2001 for $25.00 or people with alot of disposable income. I bought 5 at Pro Worlds and another 10 from Zone Driven as late as November of 01 for $25.00. I have acquired some odd ball 01's (Clear Red and Orange) in early 02 for what would be bargain prices today.

Part two why I would imagine Ken, Barry etc do not throw them is they have mastered the art of throwing 8X's, Protos, San Marinos to such a degree it is not a necessary tool for them. While watching Ken and Barry at the final four in DesMoines, any time there was a Roc shot I did not see a Roc newer than 1998 come out of there bags. For mere mortals like myself they are a great tool.

...and as many rounds as these guys have logged since then, the chances of losing them /msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif, or, Heaven forbid, leaving them somewhere , increase progressively.
I still have my mint '01 (175g) because it's not left my house since I got it at a tourney in '02 for a paltry $35! /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Jan 19 2005, 10:06 PM
I think maybe another reason why the top INN guys dont throw them is because they are EXPENSIVE to replace, also, why get used to a different roc when your game is already at THAT level?

Btw, my game is NOT at that level so I will continue to throw my '01 Roc.

Jan 19 2005, 10:08 PM
One more thing I thought about today about this thread...

What if, when you die, you are in front of your wall of discs and the last thing you see is all of your Prized collectibles? The last thing you would think is "Why didnt I throw those?"

rhett
Jan 19 2005, 10:22 PM

"Ahhhhh. My family can sell these and give me a really nice funeral." :)

I bought a few 01's in Nashville Am Worlds. I put one in the bag and threw it for quite awhile. When I sanded the flashing off it became the best roc I have ever thrown. Last year I picked up a 177 04 pearl claws stamp. It is the closest thing to the 01 yet.

I do have a 180 mint flawless 01 hand picked from the entire stack or 180's that I will keep forever. It will be in my will. :D

I too have a flawless '01 Roc I prolly WONT be throwin, but it feels GOOD to have in the bag already and a back up if I feel like breaking it out.

Jan 20 2005, 02:28 AM
I have a 177g 2001.
It's my favorite Roc in my bag.
It's been there since I bought it in 2001.

Jan 20 2005, 02:51 AM
i CARRY 6 OR 7 ROCS IN THE BAG BUT.....THE FLAT TOPS ARE MY FAV MY FAR....ALWAYS 180 OR NEAR THAT ANYWAY......HAD A 04 WORLDS SUPER ROC THAT WAS AWSOME BUT IT SLEEPS WIT DA FISHES......ALSO STRATUS....IF YOU THROW UNDERSTABLE ROCS ALOTE YOU NEED TO GET A STRAUS!!!!!A HEAVY ONE...

I'm saving all my rocs for world war four.
