I haven't heard anything about Friday doubles, one way or the other. If it were to happen, it would have to be start no later than 4:00, as the park closes around dark (currently 5:30, but probably 6 or 6:30 by mid-Feb.)
One change this year...pro and advanced will play one round from the blue tees and one round from the whites each day. Intermediates will play white tees all four rounds, as usual.
A hole-by-hole look at the course is available at http://www.radl.biz/Courses/BUCKHORN/main.htm
You must have the Flash (http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&P5_Language=English) plug-in to view it.

I'm hoping for a cold snap the week before the Meltdown that'll freeze the lake and pond solid so I can stay warm and DRY this year. :D
Either that, or that all y'all will learn how not to throw your discs in the water. (Yeah, like THAT'S ever gonna happen!) :p
hole 9 or is it 10 needs some triming, in sted of it being a lay up hole. just a thought

I'm assuming that you're talking about hole 9. Pros and advanced will play the white tees twice, and I expect that most of them will go for it from there. From the blue tees, I agree that it is probably best to lay up, but even that doesn't guarantee a three, as the lay-up shot is tough. I have seen folks shoot at it from the blues, and make deuce, but it's a gamble.

Wazzup Ceph,
It snowed about an inch, but there was no warning, and the roads were just barely warm enough to momentarily melt the snow, which immediately refroze into a sheet of ice. The schools let out early in the afternoon and the roads then became little better than a parking lot. Heard lots of stories about 4-9 hour commutes home from the Research Triangle Park to Raleigh (10-20 miles).
I was pretty upset that my 2 minute commute (intra-RTP) took me close to 5 minutes, but I won't complain about it here!
Seriously though, the roads were pretty slick, but it was the amount of traffic on them that caused the problems. Usually, we have some notice of any weather that is bad enough to make travel difficult and people stay off the roads.
How's that Chicago winter treating you?
Do I remember reading that you will be returning to NC for the Buckhorn event?
Later, LW

My company and I were in Clayton when we were told to head for home. I got to the 64 east ramp at 1:15. From there it took me an 1 hour and 45 minutes to go a 1/4 mile to get to corporation. Needless to say it sucked!! When I got to the neighborhood, I had to park up on the hill and walk another 1/4 mile to the house.

The first Buckhorn was blue-blue-white-blue, except for the intermediates. I believe that was the plan for the last two years, as well, although the weather has changed things.
If any of you decide to go to the course, you shouldn't have any snow cover there today. I live 10 minutes away in Fuquay, and we just had a few flurries there.

Shoot, y'all are a bunch of winter driving wussies. I left Wilson around 12:30 and go back to Durham shortly after 3:00. Would have been quicker, 'cept for all the other wussies on the road.
Here's a winter driving tip for y'all: if your wheels are spinning or you're having trouble going up an incline, put your parking brake in a couple of notches. That way you partially lock the differential and get power to both drive wheels instead of just the one that's spinning. Just remember to let out the brake once you get going.
Oh yeah: go easy on the gas: if your wheels still spin, you're giving it too much power. Back off on the gase and ease into it.

yes but you could also be kind and fill out all the paperwork ahead of time so that it does not take up time if you just show up and hand over all paperwork and monies it will go much smoother.

Kirk
Plankeye
Jan 25 2005, 03:17 PM
Yeah...according to several forecasts I have seen, there is supposed to be rain this Saturday and possibly freezing rain/sleet
I can confirm that there are concrete teepads (for blue and white tees, where they are different) everywhere except at #9.
Someone recently broke off one of the boards for the form for the teepad to be poured on #9 blue. There is a flat place for a concrete tee pad for #9 white, but currently no form there. Also, there could be a safety concern about putting in a teepad in that spot (for #9 white), as stepping over the end would put you into a 3' deep ditch. I can't imagine that would make the county's lawyers too happy, so we may be stuck with just one teepad for now.
I think that (weather permitting) things should go pretty quickly on Saturday. I've already done some clearing around the baskets of #8, 9, 10, and 11, as well as on the fairway edge of #1. Additionally, the OB line on #17 is in place. Besides putting in the tee pad on 9, marking the OB on 18 and the free drop on 15, I think that the main thing to do will be just removing dead wood from edges of the fairways. Unfortunately, I can't get there before noon or 1:00 this Saturday, but I don't think it will take too many people.

Jan 25 2005, 05:32 PM

I hope not. To make Buckhorn a Championship course, like it could be, you will will need have better holes. examples #12 and #16. It will get there eventually.
#16 needs alot of work.
there is sometihng wrong when your best option is a sidearm through trees hoping for the fairway, as opposed to throwing the safe shot up the middle that you know isn't going to work out because of a bunch of ***** left in the way.

#16 has a new location for the MANDO. There is no more "prayer" short cut through the woods. The mando is about 60' shy of the corner. It's position makes you play to the elbow...

so i'm guessing that during the workday a REAL fairway will be cut for 16!? The new mando could be cool IF there was an actual landing area - aka not a prayer shot short of the am pad into a bunch of holes.
mando = booooo
#16= booo
I have to agree with my esteemed colleagues.
i saw the sign moved the other day and thought it was just course vandalism, and the 'prayer' as you call it had as good of odds as the layup. unless you totally blow you'll get a four, which is no garuntee with the 'landing zone' at the turn.
So are we gonna clean out the vines hanging over the fairway this weekned?

I actually like the mando being moved if the hole must remain the same - it makes you play the hole the way it was designed to be played - that doesnt mean I like the hole though, b/c I don't.
Can someone fill that big hole behind the am pad - I hate throwing a good tee shot and landing in that thing
I think we all know that there is only one person who likes #16...
The hole behind the AM tee pad is a major issue/risk. There have been some logs and small children thrown in the hole to start to build it up. I suggest you all add to it; just dont touch my kid. It could possible be filled in with dirt or better yet crush-n-run (i.e. gravel), however there is sometimes running water in the bottom of the hole so whatever is done may get wash away. Mother Nature always wins.
As for the hole being trimmed out more, ask SA (and bring your pole prunners). It was cut back two weeks ago and there is a small window of opportunity at the corner, which will let you, get down the fairway.
And stop worrying about #16. You still have to play #4!
mugilcephalus

4 is the best hole on the course. I'm still trying to figure out what Snoop thinks is so wrong with 12. Did he mean 13?

get a flippy driver
throw hard with hyzer
let disc turn over instead of forcing an anhyzer
or, throw a huge sidearm or thumber

I don't think #12 is a bad hole. If you make four pars on it, and you'll still pick up ground on most of the advanced field. I've birdied it occasionally (RHBH), but it takes some luck. If you can't get close often, just put a Roc down the middle and play for 3.

if you just throw a roc or a driver straight to the end of the fairway, you'll have a 40-50 foot jump putt

Yeah. I have birdied hole 12 once and that was with a 40 ft putt. I threw a flippy JK Valk to get to the turn.
The worse hole is 16 because of all of the openings in the ground behind the AM tee.
I think 4 is probably the most difficult hole on the entire course from the longs. Has anyone ever birdied it?
jaxx
Jan 26 2005, 02:53 PM
the main problem i have with hole 16 is there is not a good layup area, i could throw a good shot and still be screwed for my second shot, making a thumber through the woods that has to get lucky the best shot
Yes, #4 has been birdied many times...since it's a par 4! :D I don't think anyone has ever made deuce, although I have heard of people making a run at it from 80-100 feet out. Personally, I've never made 3; I play it as a three-shot hole and try to get my 4, instead of making 6 or 7 by putting a driver in the left woods.
Plankeye
Jan 26 2005, 04:08 PM
My problem with hole 16 is that my disc usually fades too much and I miss the fairway by 20 feet. I throw a roc or putter a little high on the hole so I make sure that it doesn't land short and in one of the holes in the ground.
Ahh...well yes hole 4 is a par 4, but then again I just gauge everything as par 3.
Has anyone made it across the lagoon on hole 17 from the long pad?
MTL21676
Jan 26 2005, 06:05 PM
Yes - JJ and Walt have made it across it.
I'm sure if I was sponsered by Innova I would try to get across every now and then too :)
I was out at the course this afternoon, and realized that I made two incorrect statements earlier today.
There is now a form for a white tee pad on #9 in a safer spot - about 30 feet in front of the blue tee pad. Also, I saw flagging on some trees along the corridor - perhaps a few more are going to be removed to make the gap a bit wider.
Besides #9, there is one other tee pad that does not have concrete - the white tee on #13. It's a bit muddy now, and will likely only get worse.

Hole 12 is awesome. It's just a simple lefty hyzer with an overstable disc.
Righties need to learn a forehand so they dont have to complain about a left-to-right hole.

Simple is the key word. The problem with hole 12, is that it's no fun. It could be a little tougher if it were to be pushed back about 100' into the pines. That would make your second shot a bit harder or MTL's putt longer.

Jan 27 2005, 12:22 AM
The holes that need the most work are around the lake. (10,11,12) Hole #16's long pad needs to be moved about 100' behind the short pad. That would allow us to play a great low, tunnel shot through a tight FAIRWAY. To make #16 work, hole #14 would have to tee between 13's basket and 16's new tee, but still throwing to the #14's pin.
MTL- I thought that you were sponsored? If not, I'll give you all the disc you want, if you'd like to throw over #17's pond. During the tourney, of course

I played the Horn last week. I recommend this course highly.
I think it is, or will be, one of the best coursesin the state. It is my favorite course in the area despite the fact that the lake swallered one of my favorite discs. I feel for the lefties on 8 and 9. I would love to be the one that traveled the farthest to play this tourney but ..... next time! Y'all have done some great work. I was out there when you were pouring the new tee pads.
Are the trees marked with pink paint going to be removed?
What about the blue paint?
Plankeye
Feb 04 2005, 01:30 PM
If I am right, if the trees were marked one color, then it meant there were broken limbs in the tree. If it was another color then the tree was dead and needed to be taken down.
Hole 9 isn't bad for lefties now unless they want to try and make it over the corner of the lake from the back tees.
The safe shot on hole 9 is straight down the shoot to the edge of the water and then a small little upshot to the basket.

Never thrown it lefty. What I did say(or meant to say) is that it is easier for a lefty to make it down the fairway to the edge of the water.
That's only cause lefties know how to throw straighter than righties,
because:
lefty hole=any hole which is straight(or left to right).

On hole #15 there is rope that attatches to the left side of the steps. There isn't rope under the steps. How will this be played?
That is a good question. I don't think they are trying to grow grass under the steps.
So I assume mark your lie(even if it is under the steps) and take your putt since the rule of verticality only applies of OB lines. I had a disc go under the edge of the bridge on hole 8 on the very edge and I had to mark my lie under the bridge, take a legal stance and throw from there. Almost broke my ankle doing that.

plan is to use the runner on the left side of the steps going up as the final line/ border to define the no-play zone, anything in under steps play where it lies, probably easiest to not mark it i would think, same with the bridges on #8.

Attention all you WTBHs who didn't make it in because you were planning to check the weather Sat morning before deciding whether to play or not, here's your chance to give back to the sport and help out your fellow disc golfers: come out Sat. and spot on 15/17. Weather.com's calling for 56/sunny so I expect a lot more people to go for it from the white pad and from questionable lies on their second throw than in years past. It's hard to keep track of where all the discs that don't make it across are, and sometimes it's hard to get a good fix on where a disc splashed down when I'm in the water looking for another disc. And if you really want to help out, grab some waders and jump in on of the lake holes.
You know how nice it is to get back a disc that would have been lost, and how much it sukks to lose a disc, so step up and give something back to your fellow disc golfers. (Don't make me NOT look too hard for your discs at the Crosstown or the NCFDC. :D)

Congrats to Walt for setting a new course record in round 3 today. 11 down from the shorts.
Also congrats to Ed Williams for setting an unoficial Rhyno Course record of 52 from the longs using 4 Rhyno's and 1 putter (not used or driving only putting).
This was a well run event and we finally got in 4 rounds at this event. I think my old body likes 3 rounds better though. ;)
Thanks Scott, Mike, Felix, and everyone else who made my first trip to Buckhorn enjoyable. I must say, while, it's definitely not a lefty course, it's not as bad as I thought. The longs are a little tough with all the par 4s benefitting the righty, and the water holes benefitting the righty, and any hole you actually get to use a driver benefitting the righty hyzer... but I managed. I threw a lot more stingrays, leopards, and sidewinders than I ever had, and a few thumbers to boot.
I really enjoyed my groups al 4 rounds, and was happy not to be playing in a group in front or behind me that last round. It was nice to get in a groove and not have it thrown off by frustrated players, Thanks for the good rounds Mike, Dean, Keven, Robbie, and anyone else I forgot.
One of my favorite shots of the weekend was Chris? throwing out of the woods on 17, into the water, skips it, right into Felix's hands. Great grab!
Thanks to Ed W for the lodging and general hospitality. You are welcome here anytime you want to stay in our zoo.
See those of you who got in at Earlewood. And I will be playing pro there....
Oh yeah, duh, thanks to Trey and Sam for carting my [*****] around all weekend.
Congrats to Eddie for hanging on for the win. Wish I coulda played that morning round with ya. 47 is hot!

Steve McLean, yellow 150g Shark. He expected it to flip and turn toward the basket, but it hyzered.
Actually, I going to play it on the fly, but as I was moving into position, I thought, "Hmm, I wonder if I'll get called for interference if I snag it before it comes to rest" So I backpedled a couple of steps and short-hopped it on the second bounce. :D
My favorite shots of the weekend:
1) Ron Turner clearing the pond from the blue tee, leaving himself a 20' putt. He carded the only deuce of the weekend from the blue tee.
2) Jay Pontier holing out from the drop zone during the fourh round for a circle-4.
I must say, all y'all must be getting either smarter or stronger 'cuz I didn't see anyone throwing '01-'04 or 8x Rocs on 17 this year. :p
Despite having a couple bad rounds, I had fun this weekend. I met some really nice golfers and even though I was on the last card we were cheering for each other after each great shot.
Memorable shots of the weekend for people that were in my group...
Terry's 3 on hole 17 from the long pad in round 4. She was the only one in our group to take a 3 on the hole.
My 3 on hole 4 from the long pad in round 4.
My disc getting wedged in the top of a tree on hole 18 during the 4th round.
Mike Norris' local route on hole 2 during the third round and his stance for his birdie putt(he was stuck in his stance after his putt).
Terry's forehand roller into the water on hole 9.

Wow what a great tournament. Everything ran so smoothly. Thanks to all the volunteers. You are the ones that make the tournament. Thanks to everyone for all the nice comments. It really means a lot to me. I've never been so nervous in my life coming into the final hole in a 3 way tie for 1st. It was fun playing with Jeff, Jay, Robbie and Kevin. You guys are first rate golfers. See you guys in Jacksonville next weekend where I'll try to keep the streak alive! :D
PS) Walt, you are my hero. ;)
Looks like Walt put a major hurtin' on that course! Good showing Bryan Osh and Bird! And EOG 2 in a row!
Congrats on the second win in a row Eddie.
Seriously, the course was in great shape. Thankfully the rain and ice stayed away for the most part in the weeks leading to the tourny so the course wasn't so messy and muddy.
Much love to all the peeps involved in this tournament...It is a joy to get to play my favorite course in the area for 4 rounds with a birthday bAsH in between. Hope all that came out for the festivities on Saturday night went home happy. Thanks for sharing your evening with me and mines.
Congrats to all the winners. Walt, I appreciate your victory speech...It is good to know that someone as accomplished as you can step outside of disc golf for a minute during a tournament and think of someone else...Fr Fr Fr.
Mad love and thoughts/prayers go out to our boyz the Frizzaks whom could not be there. We all dedicated this one to you guys. Hope all is well in your camp. I'll holla.
One.

Ed W. YOU ARE THE MAN for picking up all those cigarette butts!!
I think Ed Williams picked up 400+ cigarette butts from the course this weekend. Your help in cleaning up the course is appreciated. If only we could get all players do the same.
