Dave,

that's one of things i hated about socal. Do you remenber how long it took for the SD open results? weeks.... i think mark horn does a great job, rehett was on top of things somewhat. Socal web site looks like it was made 10 years ago... good luck.

Ummm......San Diego Open results took forever to post because of the San Diego Open TDs did not submitt results for weeks. It had nothing to do with SoCal.

Cliff Towne just sent out an email today saying that he was getting ready to submit the Ice Bowl results, so again it would be really difficult for the SoCal website to have them, eh?

As for Wintertime pre-regs........you have a good point. :)

It should be great to watch! In 2002, Schweb had rounds of 1030, 1015, and 1054, but was basically in a race for second with Sugar Schack after Steve carded a 1084 for 7 throws on Brian & Al.

Steve's won back-to-back-to-back, but I'd never wager against Bobby, locally: witness GSNT 2004 over Barry + everybody. Is he even entered? I haven't bothered to check, but he has a way of waiting 'til the last minute, 4COL.

The great thing about Radl events(www.radl.com) is while your driving home from the tourney, Radl is updating the event on the pdga site. Even after the first day you know your round rating, and your score. Gotta love it

Bingo! As of yesterday, the grass was mown quite nicely, and #2 teepad is now dry. However, #9 is still a bit of an 'island'. I feel most of the water 'leaves' by evaporation, not absorbtion. We've been playing #9 to the practice basket, with good results. Another option is to play #1 basket, from the main road, as a #9.

OK, enough of that; back to Wintertalk: :p

What do the CFR's look like....it's not that 60's-ish, 'Dragon' composite-effort, is it?

 :p

The 'Dragon' was something else entirely.

The Wintertime INNcolor discs have "Where It All Began" in curvilinear text, over a photo reproduction of one of the OG targets...very nice range of colours...a gorgeous disc. :p

My ride* had to leave before the Final, but after 9 holes [63/81] Steve held a double-digit lead, having shot par, and losing but one throw to his card.

The water was up...what, twenty feet? The maximum the dam could back-up, at least. Know the 'Canyon' shot? All submerged, save a bit of 'beachfront' and the basket, practically. Spotted there, watched helplessly at least 10 thrown/lost from #19 tee, another from #13 on a drive, and one-several across the way on #20 [couldn't watch that one as well, might have been scads...there was an actual lake there for actual OB]. I did manage to snab 3 before their doom, and only because they were of the 'dribble-in' variety, and stayed within a foot-or-so from the 'shore'. I was also able to rake out a couple after losing visual contact, but just through guesstimation/blind luck...the discs were invisible only inches down. Hopefully I'll have some pics up later.

I used to think the only reason to ever DNF was injury.

Yesterday changed my mind. :)

Disc golf is supposed to be fun. Playing in the rain or even in a deluge is fun, but multiple muddy river crossings and higher-than-boot-top lakes around the baskets weren't fun for me. Oh well. They were only useless pro points. :D I hope the winners enjoyed my donation. ;)

But like I said, flooding your waterproof boots to retrieve a made putt just wasn't that fun for me...

Yowza! I heard it raining hard all night (again) Saturday night, but that is crazy!

For those of you reading from afar....the hole in that picture has a lake that looks like it is comes up to the edge of the dirt behind the basket. On Saturday you could land 12-15 feet down the escarpment and there was yellow tape marking the OB line. The water only came up to the right of the basket and way WAY lower than that.

What the heck did the elevated tee-pad hole look like? (6?) I'm figuring that basket must've been under water.

I saw hardly any of the course, going right out, staying put, then leaving promptly, but there were last-minute changes, and I believe complete new holes. After the short hole which is #12 in the 18-layout, there were 3 holes before the 'Canyon' hole, and I'd only seen one of those. But I've missed a few Wintertimes, too.

I CAN say some tees were changed; I did catch that part. And I learned later the 5-Spider hole was used.

The Lake=OB I found interesting, because the edge of the water was used as the OB line, and the boundry was indefinite on the end most likely to be entered.

Also interesting: On the hole I watched, passing over the 'fairway' was not good enough, the disc had to make contact.

...there was a two-shot maximum before a DZ was used.

...there were twosomes.

I have some amazing pictures!! I just need to find out where to host them, I am not at work so I don't have all my ftp information for my sites etc. Hopefully tomorrow, if not, definitely by tuesday.

The waders were awesome, I was probably about the only person with dry feet, and I was also able to putt from casual water, I can think of at least two birdies that I got while standing in calf-deep water where my relief lie would have been at least another 50 feet back!.

I must say, I have played many times in the rain over the years, but Saturday's round at Oak Grove was the wettest ever. There were rivers running through the course and lakes around the baskets. People were actually losing discs right under the baskets! On Sunday, two holes and the tee for a third were consumed by the lake.

I am thankful for my Gortex socks from Rocky. My feet were the only thing dry by the end of that rain soaked round on Saturday. Yes, they are pricey socks, but dry feet are worth it! You can find them online from retailers like REI and Cabellas. They cost more than my shoes, but they last for years and are far superior to Seal Skins or Gortex shoes.

happy birthday and sorry you had an event like that for your pro debut!
played once in florida where the ENTIRE course was casual water(and under water)in rockledge but,at least there the water was only 4-8 inches deep and clear so you could always dee and walk to your discs....can't imagine by looking at those pictures how it was....but some of them reminded me of national doubles in 97/98 when the baskets were under water/at the edge of the water and portables were set up....hope vegas and the memorial have better weather!

I had an awesome time this weekend at Oak Grove. Yes, the rains were epic; it was by far the most rain I have played in since moving to California from the East Coast four years ago. It was absurd to the point of being comical, and the only thing you could do was laugh and go like hell whenever a shot landed in running water and be prepared to dredge if you want to get your prized disc back.

Our threesome lost four discs on one hole, but at least we got three of them back (I found mine and putted from the middle of the stream...once you are soaked a few additional gallons of dirty, muddy runoff is pretty minor).

Mucho thanks to the Horns and the rest of the folks who helped make this a memorable tournament. I won't forget that first round for many, many years.

PS. A sad farewell to Dr. Gonzo. Feel free to join me for a moment of silence at 4:20 local time. DD

Hey, Thanks for the photos Ryan. Just when i was getting the nightmares out my head you post them right back!
And yes, Ryan wading over to his lie a few times will not be forgotten. I waded over to a lie that was 12" deep and my boots are only 9" high, so squishy feet and all i let em fly.
I owe my caddy bigtime, thanks JonJon.
Wintertime Open was nuts, but i had good time.
Still dont know how i got 3 strokes added to my card last round. Maybe cuz everyone didnt sign it, i dont know.
Is there a penalty i am not aware of? for 3 strokes.
Could have been an error on transfer. Nevertheless, the fun i had there and meeting cool folks was worth it.
Thanks Horn family and others for a wicked tourney.

What? I didn't get any strokes so it couldn't have been an "all card" error. And turning in a scorecard with the wrong total is a two stroke penalty, not three. Last year the rule was revised so that players are not required to sign their card, so that couldn't have been it. I would contact Mark in a couple days after he has relaxed a bit and work this out! Or at least figure out what went wrong. Good playing with you Floyd!

not 2 stroke penalty....CORRECT SCORE plus 2 stroke penalty...rule was revised in 2002 rules change(not last year)
also it states that even though you don't NEED to sign it, that you accept the score recorded on the card...

that's why it is good practice to check you OWN card and also check other's cards so if there are questions or errors that they get fixed BEFORE turning the cards in at tourney central....

just my 2 cents worth as a td who dislikes having to give people strokes or settle arguments about scores that are turned in..

"The Legend" Scot Moore likes to tell the tale of the second Wintertime's rain...something along Biblical proportions...I don't suppose anyone played both? Regardless, it's gear to hear people 'went with the flow', so to speak! ;)

I talked to Mark Horn after the first round and he remembered the 1978 tournament as being a similar deluge, with something like 50 discs being lost on one part of the course. The Lissaman's both remembered finding tons of plastic after one of the early tournaments, which is probably the one Mark spoke of.

I heard someone say that the upper add on holes had not been played in 15 years. It was a memorable weekend!!

I loved the "spider tree" basket which was in the middle of a cluster of trees that blocked most of the angles towards the basket. It reminded me Calvert, my old course back in Maryland, which had similar holes back in the 80s before the trees started to come down. Classic Steady Ed design!!

It wasn't just Vicky. I finished my round at around noon. When I got to the truck, Steve pretty much had already decicded that he wasn't having any fun, and wanted to go home. I told him I had no problem with either staying or leaving. Then we waited an hour for Vicky to see what she wanted to do. When she came off the course at 1:00, she looked like a drowned rat. 5 hours to finish 27 holes, then she's told that she will only get 1/2 hour to eat and dry off, and that was pretty much it for them. As we were leaving Beth told her that the masters women decided(without her) that they were not playing the 2nd rd. but would play the 3rd. Vicky was still not interested.
