I was turned on to them by Mr. Ash and I bought 50 of them, of which I only have two left. I think that they help your wrist and fore arm strength the most. I din't notice too much difference in my drives but I noticed a HUGE difference in my putting an up shots. With regular use your snap on your putts will be much more, whith what seems like less effort.
Go to this thread and post. Mr. Ash checks this thread almost everyday.

He has the World Record and the video of his world record is something to see. :D
Yeah, his technique I think belies his "true sport"! I just can't believe that he starts with one hand and finishes with the other. Normally, I start with one and finish strong with the same hand.
I will applaud him on his pacing though. Slow and steady and unlike most, he doesn't really build up the pace. There is a sudden drastic change in speed. I think that is what allows him to get the task done in such a short amount of time.
This whole post is fully intended to be innocently crude. :D

Jeff,
Have you tried the neon or techno models yet?
I got a neon blue and a techno two weeks ago. The lights are pretty cool.
For some reason the techno doesn't seem to build up speed as well as the other models. I can usually hit 11K with the other models but only 8800 with the techno.

I did see they are making a 350hz chrome one.
I wondered why my 14,456 was sinking like a lead balloon from all of the recent entries. :(
I'll have to try one of those new ones.
As far as how to get faster spins- Watch the world record holder video, as well the many others that are on the website.
Before trying to get really fast spins, make sure your arm is used to the torque that the powerball produces. Spin it several times a day for five minutes at a time a lower rpm's (6-8,000) and just keep it there. As you arm gets used to it start to crank off some faster spins just to get used to the speed increase and to get a feel for the rhythym you need. I'd been training with my Powerball for at least a couple of months before I hit my spin of 14,456- which was third best in the world at the time. I think I'm barely hanging on to a spot in the top 25 now.
When I do get really fast spins, they are only maintained at that speed for a brief moment.
Like a lot of things it's technique, strength, and a certain mindset. Check out the video of the world champ to see what I mean. That guy really gets into it.

No Jeff the 350hz I do not think is going to let people spin faster, The site was saying it produces more tourque...
As far as spinning it looked like the champ was holding it with his palm on the grip, so the open end and the counter were on the ends, I would think of this as sideways, I grip mine from the top (hand covering the counter) any advise on grip?
jeffash
Jan 19 2006, 11:31 AM
Yeah, I do it differently that the Champ does. His grip is different, and he rocks it back and forth. I spin.
In theory I should be able to spin a 350Hz ball faster than a 250Hz ball. I got the 250Hz ball to spin at 97% of it's potential. If I had the same arm I had three years ago /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I'm sure I'd be able to beat my 250Hz sppeds with a 350Hz ball. The website says that there can be 10-15% improvement with a 350Hz ball.
Let the arguments begin... :D
superq16504
Jan 19 2006, 11:50 AM
I guess it depends on the rotor they put in it, the stuff i read said the first wave of the 350hz was going to have a run silent rotor that would max at 13000, then in the next wave they were going to put in the more standard (quite noisy) rotor...
Man I guess I am going to have to dust off (not DUSTOFF) the powerball and get to spinnin.

Ultimate Gyro(short for gyroscope) is my company name I too am a distributor. Nanosecond is the manufacturer for Powerball, Dynaflex and for the gyros I sell.

What is the difference , if any , between those manufactures ?
stevemaerz
Mar 02 2006, 08:41 PM
Nanosecond is the premier manufacturer. They offer a number of different models that produce top speeds of 13000-15000 rpms and capable of puting out 38-40lbs of torque.(world record is actually 16218rpms)
However I've seen other lower priced gyroscopes that max out at only 9000 rpms. These bottom of the barrel versions have excessive vibration and won't provide enough torque for real strength building. You could use them to build endurance but to build powerful, quick hands the higher end models are far more effective.
As a consumer you can't buy directly from Nanosecond. You must buy them from suppliers such as Dynaflex, Powerball, Ultimate Gyro (my company) or other online retailers.
Sometimes I've seen the Dynaflex Pro offered in some sporting goods stores. I don't carry this model because it has an annoying vibration and just isn't as smooth as the Pro Plus version.
Powerball's 250hz models and Dynaflex's Pro Plus and Powerball models are effective and recommended. I carry the Pro Plus, Powerball(w/ or wo/ speedmeters) and Dynaflex tourgrip models in my store.
Hope this helps

So your product will be the same as the powerball gyroscope?? I am very interested in picking up a gyrscope ball with a speedometer and would like to purchase your product.
I have been told to beware of other companies than powerball and to watch out for very low RPM balls.
Do you offer a satisfaction garuntee and/or warranties?
Your product is just as good or better than powerball?

I've used all of Powerball's models and Dynaflex's models.
The Dynaflex Pro Plus and Powerball's 250hz models are identical in appearance and for me indistiguishable in performance.I typically hit speeds between 11600 and 12000rpms regardless of which supplier's gyro I use. (I've broken 12k a couple times with each). Blake told me he was hitting speeds exceeding 13k with one I gave him.
Dynaflex's powerball (w/lights) model is nearly identical to Powerball's neon models. Performance is indistinguishable, I think the neon's lights may be slightly brighter but can't tell for sure.
As I noted earlier I do not recommend the Dynaflex basic pro version available in some retail stores (clamshell packaging, sells for 24.95).
The differences between the gyros Powerball sell and the one's I offer are:
Price
-mine are $5-8 cheaper
Video
-all my gyros include CD rom instructional videos with advanced exercises
Delivery time
Powerball is a UK based company and delivery takes about 10-14 days. I'm based in Pa and ship priority mail delivery time is typically 3 days.
Granted, Powerball does have a nicer website. But if you want it quicker, for less money and have an instructional video for reference I could hook you up.

I have seen the adds and it does look like yours costs less.

Like I said earlier Nanosecond manufactures all the high end gyros for all suppliers. They just package them with either the Dynaflex or Powerball brand name. So a Powerball 250hz model is essentially the same unit as a Dynaflex Pro Plus model.
I carry the Dynaflex Pro Plus and Dynaflex powerball (w/lights) models.
As I pointed out in my prior post, higher end Dynaflex models include a CD rom video which demonstrates different hand positions and advanced exercises. You could purchase directly off their site dynaflex-intl.com but you would be paying much more than I or anyone else charges.
My website may not be as nice as Powerball's site (yet) but I can deliver your gyro quicker, for less money and give you a video, free wrist strap and satisfaction guarantee to boot.

Apr 13 2006, 02:17 PM
mine has been making that noise for a little while & still works fine...
It's common to have some temporary roughness if the gyro was used by an inexperienced user or if it suffered some sort of impact. Being out of synch (skipping noise) w/ the rotor will cause small nicks in the rotor support ring. These nicks are smoothed out eventually by the rotor axle when the gyro is spun properly at higher speeds. Once the support ring is smoothed out, the rattle noise and roughness dissappear.
Every 3 million or so revolutions (3 months for a daily user) it's a good idea to clean the dust out of the gyro for optimum performance. This can be done one of two ways.
A. Remove speedmeter and blow the dust out with an airhose or compressed air.......or..
B. Open the gyro up and wipe the dust from the inside sphere halves and support ring. To open it you remove the two small screws under the grip band and then "pop it apart". To pop it apart you can either squeeze it in a vise or place a heavy book on top of it and press firmly down upon it (think CPR chest strike).
My max is 13,044
That's an excellent score. I struggle to break 12,000

Have you tried holding it sideways? Clock toward pinky- spinning ball toward thumb. That's how the world record holder does it. He rocks it rather than spins it.
As far as starting without a string. The thumb start puts a lot of torque on the axis/spindles. I have made "clackers" out of balls by starting them with the thumb.
I prefer to start by running it down the inside of my forearm. It isn't as abrupt as the thumb-pop start, but still gets up plenty of speed to get it going.

Dynaflex does offer a super gyro that is oversized on their site www.dynaflex-intl.com (http://www.dynaflex-intl.com) . I don't think it is as smooth as the pro plus or powerball models but you may find it suitable if you don't mind the vibration.
My hands are pretty large (I can never find gloves big enough- xxl are too tight), I don't have much of a problem. You hold it more in the base of the fingers instead of the palm (similiar to the way you might grip a baseball). There are several ways to grip it ( like the "cup" hold grip), that would keep your fingers away from the rotor.
Powerball offers a metal version that is larger www.powerballs.com/metal.php (http://www.powerballs.com/metal.php) and it puts out tons of torque but is $121.00 (and has been out of stock for over three months now). I have one that I bought during a brief time they had them in stock around new years. The thing is sick, (in a cool, sadistic way) very hard to hold on to above 9500 rpms.

I finally got to 10,000+. The demo I was using was a little "shaky" after letting a bunch of people use it but the other Pro Plus is smooth as buttah. :D

That's the downside to allowing a lot of inexperienced users play with it. Fortunately you can nurse the little guy back to top shape by doing extended high speed runs using good smooth technique.

Steve,
My Dynaflex Ultimate Gyro w/lights arrived yesterday. :)
Man, that light feature is cool.
I've hit 13,048 with it. It runs so smoothly, and so quiet, that it'll take me a little time to get it into the 13,500+ range with it. I'm used to that high pitched scream as it edges into the 13-14K range( but nothing like Akis makes them scream) so it's hard to gauge.
My students at school really like the lights. Molten Lava is a perfect descriptor.
You got me hooked, again.:D

There have been some modifications made to its design in the past year. You can see a small counterweight that has been added.
The modification hasn't affected its speed but has enhanced its smoothness and made it quieter. However after you log a few million revolutions it will loosen up some and have a little more whine to it. (not a bad thing)
I have one that's over three years old and made prior to the mods and it's more of a screamer. It has more fighter jet sound yet my wimpy arm has failed to send it over the 13k barrier.

Have you ever had one turn into what I call a "runner"?
It happens with ones that have been put through extended workouts. It will just keep running at high RPM's, and it takes forever for them to slow down. You'd think it would make it easier to get high numbers, but the lack of friction that makes it "run" actually hinders the overall performance.

Not really. My 3 yr old has seen alot of use and is quite loud when I rev it up past 11k but I haven't noticed a significant difference in the "coast" time.
The 350hz metal runs a long time but that's from the added inertia from the heavier rotor.
Jeff,
Can you do both hands?
You only need a combined 25,000 to make the top-10 Dual Run.

Jim,
Yup, I can spin with both hands. I'll have to give it a shot. :)
I'm back...
Right hand- 11,631
Left hand- 13,263
Total- 24,894
That was my first dual handed effort.
Do they have to be at the same time?

I just looked at the video. The dual run is two at the same time. The scores I posted above were done independently- one after the other.
I just hit 23,786 in a legitimate dual run. It's kinda' loud doing it in my classroom. :o

I have been spinning again, once or twice a day, just pure speed runs, I have only been able to hit 10946 as my best, I think I will start throwing in an endurance run once a day, and see if I can improve my top speed.

Word has it among powerball enthusiasts, the best way to hit new personal bests is by reaching a state called "hot mode".
To do this (once you're accustomed to the workout, not for newbies) you work with it for 30-40 minutes combination speed runs and active rest intervals. Then you take a ten minute rest, wash hands thoroughly with hot soapy water to remove skin oils and then attempt your new record.
People have reported besting their previous records by 800 or more rpms this way.
I've been slipping in my training the last few weeks, still holding at 12,303. I think I'll aim for 13k by the end of June.

Steve,
How does the Power mode work?
I know how to do the 30 second mode, but how do I get a score for 90 seconds?
BTW- I just did a 5486 in a 30 second trial /msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

What does the 30 second trial do? Take your avg speed? I got 4
Last Week,I bought one off Ebay for 25 bucks with shipping, and when I first got it 10,400 or so was all I could get, only been doing the 30 seconds a day work, but today I got to 11,370....
Should be up to about 13k in June, if I start working it a little more.

It records how many revolutions you can get in 30 seconds.
You can get there by hitting the "FCN" button.
The 30 second mode is represented by the "arm" icon on the counter. Get it spinning and then clear it while maintaining some speed. Then just crank it as hard as you can for 30 seconds. The counter will stop after 30 seconds. If you can get in the 5,000 range you are working it pretty good.
Goin' to Mid-Nationals Scooter?
Good prep for 2007 Worlds :)

That's all it does- count. I guess some people want to know everything... :D
I'm making a prediction. Right here, right now.
I will submit a score today that will easily make the Top 100 on the Stength Board (http://powerballs.com/scoreboard.php?div=stre).
I figured out how to get the "90 Second Mode" to work.

You get it on the 30 second mode (The Arm) and push CLR 2 times. Once will bring up the 60. Push it again and it will say 90.
I just did a 15,616 in a 90 second trial in front of a second grade class. It would be 61st in the World, but we didn't have a camera right there and the score disappears after 30 seconds.
I'll go after it again later :)

15,967 in 90 seconds. That's 47th in the World!
We even had a camera there to take the picture. :)
One small problem- the flash washed out the LCD counter- the score can't be read in the picture.
I'll try it again on Monday and will get into the 16,000's :D
You can't imagine how hard that is to do for 90 seconds.

It depends on the age of your counter. My old Powerball counters won't do it.
I am the proud owner of an Ultimate Gyro which has the newer counter.
I'm sure all recent Powerballs also have this counter.
If you have the right counter when you push clear it will show 60. push it again and it will show 90. The old counters don't have that feature. :(
