TEAM GRUNT IN 2005

Okay here is the disc golf adventure this year for you all to ponder. Last season it was me vs. a manboy forever now known as 857. Having joined my doubles partner in being masters eligible we have both debated where to play this year. Dr. Evil is a little more confident than I, and he's been talking up the Pro Masters option. I'm personally opposed to age protected divisions, but I got into the game late, and since the PDGA offers them, I was willing to give it a try. Playing AM is fine, but you can run into the problem of not getting rounds rated. That happened several times last season. Another reason to leave AM is that we both have a careers supply of plastic already. Finally if we're going to give it a shot, we should do it now as we don't want to do this when we are embarassingly close to Grandmasters status. The stats run somethng like this.

Dr. Evil is 41 this season. He's been dealing with a foot injury for several months now, but thanks to the miracle of modern medical pharmaceuticals he's gimping around much better. His game is consistent and he's a better putter than I. His current rating is 906. He's got about five wins (PDGA) between Internmediate and Advanced Am.

I'm turning 40 this season. I am a stunning physical specimen. My current rating is 892. Up from 839 at the beginning of last season. I've got decent distance and control, but my putting is my biggest drawback. It improved last season, but certainly not pro level. I've got two wins both below Advanced.

We've decided to play Pro Masters all season and see what happens. We'll be making our unofficial Pro Masters debut this Sunday at the Paint Branch monthly where we can take cash as it is unsanctioned. We'll follow this up at several Ice Bowls as we gauge what we may have gotten ourselves into. An interesting sidenote is that we have agreed to take the cash, in the unlikely event we cash in a PDGA, if the amount equals or exceeds our entry fee. The thought being we'll officially go to the dark side if we earn it.

So now you get to vote:

I hope you intend to do better this year. That's going to be a mandatory two dayer for us you realize.

bruce_brakel
Jan 08 2005, 02:39 PM
If you stick with it, you both will cash by September. Hawk is still in the good part of his rating curve which means he is still learning and getting better. Dr. Evil has been an average amateur for a long time, but any day he puts in two personal good rounds he can cash. He had a day last summer when he would have cashed in Pro Master so he'll have more.

Plus, playing with the pro masters will be good for both your games.

Now there's a bold prediction. Ca$hing by September. We'll be sure to check back on that one.

Rich and I tie one spot (three strokes) out of the ca$h at todays Paint Branch monthly. Not DFL!

Rich was in Vegas on business this weekend, so I conducted the experiment solo. I came in 7th out of 13 pro masters at the Seneca Creek Ice Bowl, once again being the first of the guys not to be paid. :D T2 also noticed this and pointed it out. I did beat Mr. Sherwood though. ;) And I sold him a pink putter. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Dr. Evil ties for last place cash :cool:at the Druid Hill one round Ice Bowl while I stagger in four strokes back for our first DFL. :(

yeah, that showing was nothing to be proud of. we both stunk the joint up. i hate one round events as you barely get time ot warm up! especially in the snow.

Well the real season starts in March if we decide to go back to Loriella, or in April at Bluemont (if you dare ;)) or Patapsco or the Soiree. Whichever one comes first.

...of course you mean the real season starts at loriella. :)

team va shortarm awaits you for the rookie masters challenge.

loriella always been berry berry good to dr. evil. check my scores the last few times i played there...

Looking last year over I see there wasn't even a Masters field Rich. If we go we may need to rope in a third to make a division.

johnbiscoe
Jan 24 2005, 12:36 PM
ted and i will be there, there will undoubtedly be a field. :D

dr evil at loriella- shorts- 55,53 longs- 62,65,63...

certainly respectable from the longs but those short rounds better improve.

hawkgammon
Jan 24 2005, 12:41 PM
Thanks for not bringing up my rounds John! ;)

Chris Hysell
Jan 24 2005, 07:17 PM
Two things for my friend Hawk.

If you are nice and behave I will join you at Loriella. Not because I want to but because I don't want this new team short arm crew to think that this division is easy money.

Hawk, because you have done such a good job on your Ask Hawk thread, I will volunteer to help you learn how to putt. A few John Biscoe pointers will make you a new man.

Dear Dr Evil, are we going to go head-to-head? Invite your buddy Jimmy Stanley to join us. He spent all last year telling me that he was playing Pro Masters in 2005 because he had enough plastic and wanted to elevate his game. Let's do this.

Dick
Jan 24 2005, 08:02 PM
i'm playing pro if i play. not sure what jimmy will play, we're all just added cash for you anyway, right hysell? ;)

hawkgammon
Jan 24 2005, 10:41 PM
Lord Hysell,

I accept your gracious offer, and pending a medical clearance next month I will start my official 2005 season at Mr. Biscoe's Loriella event. It has long been a dream of mine to be added ca$h for you so that perhaps you could get some sleeves. It's cold out, and I worry so.

Rich may or may not be doing the biker gang thing around that time, but I think he may accept the challenge assuming he doesn't fall and break his hip between now and then.

Chris Hysell
Jan 24 2005, 11:27 PM
Added cash? I'm so hurt. I just play for the camaraderie. The bonus money is usually spent on necessary stuff like food. I like food.

You should follow Hawk's advice and buy yourself some sleeved shirts. :D

At the Patapsco Ice Bowl (is it really a tourney if you only play one round?) Rich finished 2nd out of about 10 Masters. I missed the money again, but finished about 7th or 8th defeating last weeks Druid Hill Masters Champion Billstream.

hawkgammon
Feb 14 2005, 09:29 AM
Rich finished 2nd out of 15 at the Paint Branch monthly tourney/Ice Bowl making $15 profit over his entry fee. He would have had to go Pro if this thing had been a real tourney. I moseyed in 12th out of 15 playing two incredibly mediocre rounds.

Dick
Feb 14 2005, 12:09 PM
yeah, if it would have been a pdga i would have lost my profit margin by having to pay a higher renewal fee!

My worst from shorts though is 67

DR. EVIL CASHES IN FIRST MASTERS EVENT TO GO PRO

Playing at a very windy Loriella today, Rich managed to staunch a horrific second round collapse where he went from +3 through 12 holes to end up +14 for the round to finish 7th out of 16 for last place cash winning $40. :) I came in 10th. :p

Dick
Mar 07 2005, 12:14 AM
talk about backing in. luckily i was so hot the first 12 holes in spite of the wind. the trees got ahold of me the last 6. also you forgot to mention my next to last hole 11long. beatiful shot to within 10 feet of the pin. applause from the group ahead of us. then i doink the putt. followed by derisive laughter by billy bob and hawk. ouch. followed hat up with a nice 5 to finish behind terry roddy and let boyce slip by also.

I assume you mean Rich's four stroke margin of victory over me. I'm not proud of it either.

Sharky
Mar 09 2005, 12:34 PM
I am proud of you only 4 strokes from the Dr is pretty good for you.

Keep dreaming if you think you can hang with boyce and roddy that is not even under discussion /msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

hawkgammon
Mar 09 2005, 12:59 PM
Actually four strokes over two rounds is exactly what our ratings (910 vs. 889) say should be the difference. That is merely a tertiary issue though in the quest for ca$h.

Dick
Mar 10 2005, 12:41 AM
whatever shark, i had them. at least until i billfolded on the last 6 holes. won't happen again...

hawkgammon
Mar 13 2005, 10:43 PM
Okay I managed to cash at today's Paint Branch Monthly coming in 5th out of 10 Masters earning back my $25 entrance fee; minus my $5 tip to my second round caddy Stephanie. As an added bonus Mr. Sherwood failed to ca$h!

bruce_brakel
Mar 13 2005, 11:18 PM
Congratulations. I think that makes you the first Star Fleet Captain to turn pro in the PDGA!

hawkgammon
Mar 13 2005, 11:50 PM
Thanks Bruce, but these monthlies are unsanctioned, so I'm still officially a lowly Am. Next chance to go pro is at Sherando at the end of March, but my best chance will probably be at Bluemont on April 2nd. I have to close this deal soon, or I'll never hear the end of it from the evil doctor.

hawkgammon
Mar 14 2005, 02:31 PM
Perhaps improved play would eliminate you having to worry about crumbs at the bottom of the payout. I can understand your bitterness at having some expatriate come and deny you winnings. You observations about the payout sound like the musings of a disgruntled club member. Remember that my appearance fee has to be dealt with prior to any actual payouts. Have you considered joining the DGCNV?

Dick
Mar 14 2005, 03:07 PM
yeah shark. if you want to have a chance to get paid, you need to finish in the TOP HALF, NOT THE BOTTOM HALF! :D

hawkgammon
Mar 26 2005, 11:20 PM
Dr. Evil misses cashing at Sherando by one spot finishing 8th out of 14 Masters. My mediocre first round bogs me down in 12th.

I went down solo to Floodmont today where it rained, and rained, and then really started to rain. At one point the entire fairway of hole #8 was under 3" of water, and my Spider was floating in place. I ended the first round tied for fourth out of six, and let my shot at getting into the final nine trickle away over the last two holes as I was passed by the sixth place person who ended up tied with the other fourth placer. So the five of them went off to play the final nine, and I was the lonely loser. :( On the plus side I got really wet. Did I mention that it rained?

hawkgammon
Apr 03 2005, 08:36 PM
Well it looks like 17% of voters and Bruce Bakel were right. I managed to take the fourth out of five cash spots today at the Baltimore Green Week Tourney. To add to the sweetness of the moment, Dr. Evil failed to ca$h, and I beat Mr. Sherwood who finished fifth so I was able to take $5 from him. Certainly the highlight of my athletic career. I would guess this concludes this thread, as we have both now cashed, though I have made $10 more than Rich so far. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

i did manage to make the lead group for round 2, but failed to putt and didn't play great overall to make up for it. fell like a rock posting a 69 and falling to the last third of a small field. conversely, i did beat you and jesse! :D

Sharky

In the "other" division who won No Spin?

Plus the usual who cashed, who crashed, throw us a bone ;)

md21954
May 02 2005, 11:13 AM
more horrible contamination for the thread... some local pro took open. no spin and b hoffman took second. j gobrecht won gm and would have taken second or third in open, norm shot well and placed second in gm. i dunno who won adv. i was middle of the pack, jesse took fourth. i would have won intermediate by three strokes-- i should have played int as my rating is WELL low enough and they played the same tees. a PA state championship should have tempted me. was too rushed to realize the opportunity after jesse and mine scenic route through york to get to codorus.

hawk looked snazzy in his smurf get up. i never knew such a terps fan would have a wardrobe capable of going head-to-toe duke colors

i don't think so, i think the lead group was passed from behind. linc was going towards a good round and a win, when the train derailed on the front nine( we started on the back) he took a double circle 5, and then melted down to take an 8!!! ouch!

Hey who even thought we'd ca$h? If I factor in my Swamp winnings and the money you owe me for the Starwinder that narrows the gap...oh nevermind.

From a financial standpoint this was a solid decision this year. ;)

Dick
Dec 13 2005, 10:14 AM
actually if you count entry fees from the events i don't know if i would call it "a solid financial decision". but we did win some cash a few times. next year i plan on doing much better at playing efficiently and ending up in the cash. having the lingering heel and elbow thing going on was a drag, but things seem to be getting better. and changing my grip during the season probably wasn't a good short term decision, but in the long run it should work out.
