That terrible time of the year when there are no disc golf tournaments in most of the country, and after work leagues get cancelled for lack of daylight, and weekend leagues get cancelled for traditional holiday observances is starting to end. Besides posting like maniacs at PDGA.com what do some of you do for the cabin fever?
Kira and I have been making blank trophies for next summer's tournaments so we won't be doing it when the weather is nice. I also like to play rated spades at www.zone.com. (http://www.zone.com.)
The Icebowls are almost here. Everyone do something constructive like bringing a big donation to your Icebowl. May the Icebowls save us from this wretched season!
:D

I don't know what you mean.
I have my first sanctioned tourney of the year tomorrow morning. Weather's supposed to be in the mid 70s, and mostly sunny. The only negative is I have to drive about 150 miles to get there. And stay with my in-laws who live close by.
Then next weekend, I have another sanctioned event about 27 miles from my house. The following weekend will be my third sanctioned tourney in as many weekends of the new year. Ironically (or is that mockingly?), it's called the "Northside Freeze"...even though the weather will probably still be warm enough for shorts and tshirts.
Seriously, for all of you folks who love disc golf so much, how can you possibley stand to live somewhere where you can't play for a big chunk of the year?

Yeah, but we can play at 1 p.m. in July and August here. My brother-in-law in Austin says you pretty much have to wait until evening or get up real early to play disc golf in Texas in the summer. And we can also get in a quick round after 9 p.m. in June up here, being so close to the arctic circle. :D

I quit smoking! 7 days ago, have smoked for 16 years.
Your brother-in-law is being a wuss. Was he born in Texas? Playing in 90+ heat is nothing as long as you make sure to bring a bunch of water. Plus it starts cooling off around 4 p.m. (high nineties to low nineties) and even the slightest breeze on the sweat fills great. I bring an extra one gal. cooler to drink from after I finish off all the water that I carried with me during the first round. So what if I start to look like I was roofing after a week straight of playing. As long as I bring some sunscreen I shouldn't have to worry about skin cancer.

definitely a wuss. i played a round last year in dallas when it was 113deg, just to see if i could do it. i've also played in 6" of snow (bear creek ice bowl last year, here in DFW) so we have both extremes.
Wow, 6 inches must have threatened your ankles! /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Way to go Jake! Tough thing to do. My mother was able to quit after 40+ years of continuous smoking, cold turkey. Of course, she quit immediately after a double bypass. You are doing the right thing, even if this is our states number one cash crop.

I'm 31, turn 32 in april. If I wasn't born with the "large and in charge" gene, I wouldn't have been 6 feet tall at age 15, which is when I started smoking. I'm 6 foot 3 now, can you image how tall I would be If I hadn't of stunted my growth with smoking. :D

Not true, you can play mid-day in the summer; you just have to be a mad dog or a Brit. :)
Actually, there are a number of well-shaded courses that you can play even in the summer heat; you just have to use common sense. Oh, and did I mention, I spend my winters playing...
The real problem here is playing at dusk in the summer. The blood loss to mosquitoes can be debilitating.

I remember Texas snow from when I lived in Dallas. You can probably find your lost discs the next day, since it melts like that. You can say you have snow, but my aching back knows better.
I have also quit smoking for the fourth time! I'm a little concerned that my game really started to get better when I started smoking again, but I'm hoping for simple coincidence. Either way I don't plan on starting again. No matter how much I enjoy it, it just isn't worth it. Good luck.

Stick with it Fisty, the coinkydink is just in your head.
As another guy who quit smoking 4 months ago, my game suffered too...then I realized that I had been using the smoke from the cigarette to show me wind direction and speed. Started using the "throw stuff in the air" method of wind detection and my game is back on track.

I think it had more to do with dealing with the ups and downs on course. While smoking, I had a little more control over my stress. But there is no stress this year, top o' the world every time! :D

Congrats to Jake and Larry! I stopped smoking cigarettes this past Labor Day after 21+ years. Cold turkey, no regrets. Now I can taste food again!
As for relieving cabin fever, my 7-yr-old son and I practice with minis almost every day; he has become quite a good roller - at least in our long hallway. The kid's got snap!
I also built a mini-basket using a Raven, a freestyle disc, and the plastic chains from my old TriState basket.
Only 2 more #@$*%$! months of winter.....
