I believe on real windy days ( 30+mph winds ) putting into a headwind with a driver from 20' or so is smarter than trying to use a putter. Have other people tried doing this?

Jan 06 2005, 05:02 PM
I've seen a person or two do this. (Not me, cuz in WA there's no wind). I think a DX whippet would be a good choice. Depends on your style of putting I suppose, how much nose up or down you have on a putt, etc. If there's anybody that driver-putts well in the wind, I'd like to hear what disc they use and why.

I use a Firebird, but it's only for shorter putts 25' and in, and only when it's a direct headwind thats blowing fairly hard ( 30+ mph ). Anything longer than 30' I would just lay up in this type of wind. I've seen putters get picked up and blown 50' behind where the guy started putting from! From my experience, high winds just picks the putters right up and it's anybodys guess to where it's going to go, I find a firebird to fly very straight and increases my accuracy in this type of situation.

I have definitely puTTed with a driver in windy and non windy conditions. Non windy is when I am less than 40 feet away with a tree between me and the basket. I hyzer a Firebird around the tree instead of a putter because it will react faster than a PuTTer will.

I learned with a driver. It was the only disc I owned. What was that disc again? Oh yeah, SE archangel. I just thought I sucked horribly. Try throwing it the entire game. Payed off though.

Then I moved to a shark like Shwebby!! Should have stuck with that baby!

Now I use Steady Eds disc and I am in love! ;)

I played with a guy that used a beat up Gazelle as his putter. He threw it vertically (i.e. 90 degree hyzer) and it would just rattle around the basket without hitting the chains when he made it. Not one "blow by" the entier round.

Ive had good success using a Pro Line Gremlin in the wind. Many people around here will use ROCs as well.

Man I tried that the other day when the cold front was blowing in. It was pretty trippy!

I have a REALLY soft Demon that has the feel of a soft putter, but holds up in the wind like a Demon. Makes a sweet 30' headwind putter. Has definatly saved me in tourneys before.

I've got an 800g Innova Liger I like to use in the wind. I don't have to worry about throwing a driver. The Liger works well. Chris you should try it!

I have an aluminum firebird that I made in metals class, it weighs about 1000grams and works great in those stiff head winds. 50mph wind? no problem! If you think Z-tremes are stable . . . .

Gators are great putters into the wind and very predictable.

I also have a flat top that's broken in and it's similiar to a SE Rhyno.

Demons, Whippets, Gators hell even Wasps putt good into headwinds. Point being...from 25' with a strong headwind...put the putter away and pick up a midrange.

Anyone use their driver as a midrange? i've used firebirds as my overstable midrange on short strong hyzers and short sidearm hyzers for a few years now with very positive results.

I usually can use a Demon for those holes, even into the wind, BUT...I never hesitate to take a huge spike hyzer with a Speed Demon on even dinker holes. (Such as hole 7 in Oskaloosa). It sometimes may seem odd since there is a direct route to the pin, but the way I see it is that its the most predictable shot in the game, and I can always stick the landing so why not? You gotta do what you gotta do.

Not personally, but all the time I see a throw similar to a Tomohawk, thrown out, with a follow-through down, where the top of the disc skips off the ground, jumps, and settles a short distance from the initial contact. I saw this player make a 100+ bird in just this manner this week. It sounds quite reckless, throwing a disc and playing for a skip [on it's back], but he's actually quite predictable with this.

...he's pretty deadly with putts in this manner, too; however it's prolly best for doubles...the misses sometimes end up no closer!

...said player throws almost exclusively overhand, with hardcore overstable discs [CE FX, Monster, etc.].

My favorite putters have sharp edges...i.e. when I park the hole.

If I am more then 25ft away with a headwind I usually "take my medicine" and lay up, otherwise I will use a classic roc to attempt the putt. Although in a practice round I just try to make the putt with my normal putter untill I can get it right.

Putting with a driver reminds me of 1 disc challenges. I'd like to see a 1 disc challenge on a REALLY windy day, that would be interesting.....

Here in Western Colorado it's very windy all spring in the afternoons and I have to do a lot of playing in the wind from March-June. I putt with Rocs in moderate wind and usually my Firebird in 25mph+ wind. Upside down works too if you're trying to lay up between 10-45 feet (Yes I have laid up from 10 feet before and it was the right choice). We have some pretty steep hillsides the baskets are on and the wind comes ripping over the crests. I had a 6 foot uphill putt into the wnd that hit chains solidly, turned vertically and blew back over my head and 50 feet down hill. That was a tough 7 that day I think. Throwing upside down will get you to where you can drop it in and save you headaches at times.

If Tin Cup taught us nothing else, and it didn't, it showed us that the only thing worth doing is going for the hole out even if its the last ball in your bag and you have to carry the lake. Sure trophies are nice, but you really remember those miracle shots you make and not the layups to save the score.
