Does anyone throw all champion plastic? Is it even practical?

Just wondering?

I don't. I prefer the DX putter and approach discs. I do throw Champion Viking and Orc.

I throw a lot of champion... out of 15 discs in my bag prolly 8-11 discs will be champion type. Obviously they beat much more slowly than dx. DX beats in too quickly in my opinion. Also, wet conditions aren't really an issue...i just make sure to fully dry the discs, and carry an umbrella to cover my bag when it rains. I carry some SE/X plastics for discs that i want to beat up for turnover shots... SE Leopard, X Pred, etc. Putters are the only disc that i will not use champion for. Either D, or X...

Use what works for you...

I throw all champ plastic except my putter a D Wasp and a D BUZZZ. I like the feel of champ plastic better then D plastic. I think that i get a better grip and the flight is more consistent.

speaking of D Buzzz... I have a few of the first runs of the D Buzzz with the mini D stamp... i hate the feel of this disc. IT is VERY stiff. Steve, have you seen these? Do they feel like the second runs(production runs?)

I would, but all Chmpion plastic over 155g is TOO slippery in my hands. I swear by my 150g gummy Champion drivers, though.

Jan 04 2005, 12:29 PM
I throw all champion/Z plastic primarily because I throw very fast, upwards of 75mph in the opinion of a world famous DGer. So when I hit a tree, I need the forgiveness of candy plastic. It is also more stable the DX or D/X plastic.

I do feel that Candy is useless in the soaking rain. Yeah if you can keep your bag and towels dry its fine, but once your bag and towels get wet candy is too slippery. I have a DX collection that I throw for when it rains during a tournament, I won't play in the rain unless I paid for it.

Takes too long to beat up and get to the sweet spot. And if you lose a perfectly beat up CE disc you have to start over again.

I got one of those at worlds and i know EXACTLY what you are talking about. This disc will never be thrown. It will be put on the wall as a first run. It feels NOTHING like the ones we got a DGLO or the production run ones. I will stick with the DGLO orange ones and the new prodution runs. The blue ones with the mini D are really stiff and really domey.

yeah... i tried to break one in.. the think still won't turnover!

they're sitting in my "don't need these" pile...

one slightly thrown, the other is scuffed as i threw it in a parking lot to break it in.

I suppose a 3rd of my bag is champion. I was just wondering. I play on a lot of wooded courses and my dx drivers got beat way to quickly.

Was wondering about getting some champ. midrange discs

I have KC putters, and the rest is CE-Champion.Maybe a DX ROC depending on the course.

Sounds like message board speed to me. I've seen 600' throwers throw trough a radar. The highest clocked disc was 73mph.

BTW, the 600' mentioned above is not message board distance! It is based on a flat ground, 550' hole that these guys are throwing past!

Jan 04 2005, 02:42 PM
No, that is an approximate speed of my throw told by a respectable hall of famer. I have never been clocked, although I would like to. There is a difference between fast and good. Furthest I have thrown straight line is 450ft (Alabama State Games), I imagine that I could throw farther with a big sweeping anhyzer like the guys who throw 600ft, but I have yet to develop that.

But I have thrown a baseball 63mph, and I can tell I throw a disc faster then a ball.

Back to the point of the thread; If you play alot of wooded holes, stock up on champion plastic .

But when I am throwing for max distance I switch to DX. I throw DX Beasts in distance competitions.

Anyone know where I can get a max weight D-Buzzz?

Jan 04 2005, 02:44 PM
It's funny you mention a baseball throw because most of the others that were trying out the radar had their best speed with the "overhand" baseball type throw.

I throw mostly champion plastic. In the midrange I have a champ whippet, shark, and stingray. With these three I'm pretty much ready for anything. But if I want a dead straight shot, I use an E Element. The Gateway E plastic is as durable as the Innova Champion plastic.

IIRC The champion whippet was limitted edition and the stingray is no longer going to be produced in champion plastic. I better not lose them.

All champion here except for 2 DX Rocs. I even use the champion Aviar which I don't see too many others using.

Champion Aviars rock!

All Champion except for the Z Express I use for rollers. I'm too anal to put up with the beating that DX plastic takes. Instead of trying to wear plastic in I've tried to adjust my game to plastic right off the shelf. That way if I lose a disc I can just pick up a fresh one and I'm ready to go.

I throw 100% candy. I used to throw S Wizards, but now I even putt with candy, using a really gummy/grippy Qmega. I started playing seriously right as CE/Z plastics were being introduced and I got used to the grip and feel right away. I learned to play on a tightly wooded, long, championship-style course, and I cringe to think of how I would have possibly dealt with playing 10+ rounds per week, throwing hard and wild, with a lineup of DX plastic.

As far as mids go, the Dx Roc is the basis for all comparisons. As far as Innova goes, they have NOTHING comparable to a Roc broken in to stable. I have thrown them all extensively and they all fall majorly short in terms of one or more of the DX Roc's speed/glide/high-speed turn/low-speed fade characteristics. The Champion Shark most closely resembles a brand new Roc all around, but is still slower and more overstable in my experience.

In my opinion, Innova's two most "Roc-like" mids are found in the Millenium line. The QMS is like a stable version of the Champion Shark, and the Q-Sentinel is like a new Champ Shark, but faster with a more driver-like feel.

I throw the two mids that most closely resemble the DX Roc, and they happen to both be made by Discraft. The Z Buzzz is like a stable(broken in) Roc with a little glide traded for a faster cruise speed. The Z Wasp is like a brand new(overstable) Roc. In my opinion these are the best all-around candy mids available.

I do use a Champion Aviar and a Qmega as mids for a lot of shots 300' and in range and I love them. These are great mids, but they don't compare the Roc distance-wise.

sounds like were throwing just about the same bag. ive got all my drivers in ce or champion plastic my midrange in the hard KC dx plastic minus one dx cobra for a roller and two kc aviars and two dx aviars. i like to switch off between kc dx and regular dx on days when i just cant seem to hit with one putter.

Almost all candy plastic here. DX just doesn't throw the same twice it seems like. I do agree that a DX Roc is second to none. I need a good beat up one for straight shots in a tailwind.

Also, Pro/SE/Soft seems the best plastic for the putters.

My home course is similar to yours and 2/3 of my bag is hard plastic. I've found (and been told) hard plastic does not fly exactly the same as the same disc in soft/reg. plastic. I buy a disc is the soft plastic because they cost less. I try it on an open field. If I like it then I take it to the course and try it there while trying to avoid the "friendly oaks". If it passes those tests then I'll look at trying & buying in the Champion or Z plastics. I just live with the minor flight changes between the two.

This has become my pilosophy as well started with a dx teebird loved it and then upgraded to 2 champ. T'birds. Picked up a 150 dx Beast for my wife and started throwing it and loved the distance and picked up a champ beast for myself.

Does the obsession ever end?

Drivers are all candy. Mids and putters are mixed.
CE Roc, Super Roc, KC Roc, DX Rocs
CE Aviar, KC Aviar, DX Aviar P&A (<300)
DX Aviar P&A (putts)
Just got some Wizards-S and E- will see if they make my bag.
