I'm going on a disc vacation in TX. I've been once before and came across a few really nice courses. I'd like to know if anyone has any quick recommendations. I've seen that there are many in the Dallas area and Austin area and would like help to narrow the choices down. Thanks!

in no particular order, except maybe south to north:
Houston: The Wilmont
Austin: Moody's, Pease, and CircleR's Meadows (Pease is a sweet little 21 hole course, and the co-eds on the path make it one of the most enjoyable anywhere)
Waco: Cameron East (The Beast)
DFW: Audobahn, Vet, ZBoas
(my top 5 if i really hafta rate them: Wilmont, Moody's, Meadows, Audobahn, ZBoas)

Nothing wrong with the course...you need to pull the majority of the players out there and not show them where the other DFW courses are
vinnie
Dec 30 2004, 11:59 AM
the course is good and lots of play is good....THE BASKETS SUC and for anybody up there that has anything to do with BB owens .......adding chains don't fix the problem.
That would be kinda like polishing a turd....rub all you want ......its still a turd
okcacehole
Dec 30 2004, 12:04 PM
You don't like the basket with 3 layers of chains, one of which is about 3x's thicker than it should be :D
Too many problems with that course to keep serious players wanting to shoot on it. You can only catch good players on that course early in the morning before the slugs show up.
vinnie
Dec 30 2004, 12:15 PM

Thanks a lot for all of the recommendations. I had a lot of fun. A list of the TX courses that I've been fortunate enough to play between this trip and the last...
In the Dallas area...Denton, Lewisville (Lake), Dallas, Grapevine, Arlington, Crowley, Ft. Worth, Carrollton (Jimmy Porter)
Between Dallas & Austin... Waco (East & West), Temple, Round Rock
In the Austin area...Austin (Pease, Bartholomew, Circle C, Seawright), Wimberly, Lago Vista, Red Rock
Towards San Antonio...San Marcos, New Braunsfels, Universal City, Live Oak
Next time I'm going south, I think I will stick to mostly favorites and a few new ones. Staying overnight at San Saba sounds like a must. As far as Dallas goes... Grapevine, Arlington, & Crowley are the best. Lewisville, B.B Owen, ZBoaz, and Garland are good 2nd choices. In Austin, I thought that Peace park was superior to the others. There are several nice places outside of town like Moody's and Lago Vista, with Wimberly being the best. Did I hear something about a new disc golf country club going in west of town??!!
Anyone know of anything not too far from I-35 that I should see on my next trip? I almost had time to stop in Georgetown, Gonzales, and a couple others in the Dallas area.
You Texans have some mighty fine disc golf. Thanks, Michael Schoenhofer

I didnt see anyone mention any West Tx. courses :(. I like the Amarillo course the best, but Lubbock has a great course as well. If your on I-20, stop by the Abilene or Big Spring courses. I have also heard nothing but good things about the San Angelo course. If you make it up in this part of Tx, I recommend trying to hit a few. They have lots of open-ness, but lots of wind as well ;)

Yeah! West Texas does have several "Diamonds In The Rough". The Amarillo course is certainly a welcome sight for anyone travelling across the barren plains of Interstate 40. The Parks & Recreation Dept. has been working with the local Disc Golfers to make this course an unforgettable golfing experience. And coming in May, the "DisCrazy Shoot Out" will showcase this fabulous track with an event that will be talked about for a long time! A one day (Saturday before Mother's Day), 40 hole tournament with lots of ADDED INCENTIVE ($$$).
johnrock
Mar 12 2005, 02:20 PM
Our new "Blue Tees" will be used for the "Shoot Out". All Pro players will play two rounds from these tees. If you think you have this track figured out, Step up to the "Blues". Not neccessarily longer, these tees make you hit your throw lines, or you're hitting a tree. Hole # 11 and #18 are lengthened quite a bit but also are extened to a par 4 (which makes a total par of 59).
as far as a Championship layout.....
Waco...East (take your beating and move on)
Moody's Red Rock (wow, play best you can on each hole, easy?)
Circle R Wimberly Meadow (another whatcha got in the bag?)
VP Champ layout (a rare fun but challenging)
I might be forgetting one, but the rest are far behind.
I left out the fun kick butt courses that might be on a -8 below level.
johnrock
Mar 14 2005, 12:56 PM
Maybe you haven't seen this property yet. If you get a chance to play this course during the Top Of Texas Open, you'll see this track lags behind no other! In the near future when the new Lake Course goes in beside the Creek Course (the existing one), this complex will be at the top of a lot of people's list. Two back-to-back 18 hole courses that offer lots of different looks, and demand different shots on every hole. Short and long tee's will provide challenges for all skill levels. And don't forget the ever present WIND! :)

Hey Rock
Is the Lake course going in for TOT this year?
johnrock
Mar 15 2005, 12:30 PM
Hey Jerry, Probablly not on the Lake Course. It's still in the planning stages as of now, but we might use some of the area if we need to add a few holes. For the DisCrazy Shoot Out, Matt is adding a couple of extra holes. One will be the old Hole #18 (the one that used to tee-off by the swimming pool), and the other will be the new Par-4 hole that plays from the bridge to the practice basket. This hole should provide plenty of variance in the scores because the creek is OB and the line of trees is OB also. This means the fairway will be about 60-80 feet wide that narrows to about 25-30 ft. near the basket, which is 495ft. from the tee. Good thing there will be plenty of adult beverages there to drown away those bogeies!

how about circle c for the top of the list?
it is easily climbing my top 5 list in texas:
1) san saba - river course or strawbale
2) circle r - meadows
3) cameron east - can someone say humid in summer?
4) red rock - greens or blues
5) circle c - blind lizzard course. go play and you will see or should i say, not see, and you will know why. once those teeboxs are fixed, we are talking about one bad mother f*cker.

SNOW!?!?!? Man, where did this wet white stuff come from? Already 5-8 inches here at my house just from overnight. Time to shovel my walks so the mailman can get through, then it's off to the course to shovel the tee pads so they don't get all tracked up then frozen with humps & lumps that make for terrible footing. Any volunteers with a shovel that are interested in good kharma?
you said snow on a texas thread. :D
johnrock
Mar 16 2005, 12:28 PM
Snow!! And lots of it. Walking between some of the tee pads, I had to push through snow up to my knees! And just three days ago it was 78 degrees and everyone was wearing shorts during the handicap round. Oh well, we should have really green and thick grass this spring. No, wait! what is that going to do to the rollers? :( Don't get near the creek, it's going to be full from all the snow melt!

Hi James! You are correct, Sir! It wasn't as much fun as the time I spent Spring Break at Padre Island, but Spring Break here can certainly bring surprises! I guess any time spent on the course (whether working or throwing) beats moping around, waiting for the weather to change. It is supposed to warm up for this weekend, but a few of us are going to Albuquerque for their "Duke Fest". Given the lack of trees at those courses, I hope it doesn't get too warm!
BTW, James, We would love to have you stop by and check out our little slice of heaven. If you're ever this way, be sure to let me know, and I'll set you up with the VIP tour! :)

our little slice of heaven.
I'll second that. Thompson Park and Hunter Park, Tulsa OK. are my 2 favorite courses. Amarillo definitly has one of the best kept secrets in Texas. And now, with the blue tees (yikes!!)...looks like its stepped up even more. I only wish Amarillo was a little more accessible for central and south texas players...I think they would really be pleasently surprised. I also think it would be a GREAT stop for the TX10.

Mar 17 2005, 05:54 PM
I sure wish it was closer...even for us here in San Angelo it's a pretty good drive. Much less if your coming form the Austin area.
On the west Texas courses. Big Springs has some really nice courses, and Will Hair in Abilene is a fun course. San Angelo's course is pretty good, just flat. But it has a lot of trees to make it tough, plus you have to throw over water on 4 of the holes. 2 of them being pretty long throws. We just added another 9 hole course in town that is a lot of fun...some what beginner friendly on the distances, but it has a lot of OB that will make a good days score shoot up in a hurry. Also ASU just put in a short 9 hole course on campus, haven't played it yet, but they say it pretty fun...but you only need a putter or maybe a midrange disc to play it all.
johnrock
Mar 18 2005, 02:17 PM
Thanks, Jerry. We're sure proud of what we have here, it's been an interesting ride since the first days of walking the property and dreaming of what could be :). Amarillo is a long way from the rest of Texas, but well worth the trip! There is an airport that Southwest flies into (which also claims to have one of the longest runways in the free world, an alternative site for the Space Shuttle to land). And the new "Blue Tees" are a welcome addition, which will stretch out the course from 6,654ft. (all pins in the long position) to close to 8,000ft. And some of these new tees will get the player out of the wide open fairways of the regular course, and make them go around those big wooden things with the green stuff on top (yeah, there are a few trees in the Panhandle!). The Parks & Rec. Dept. deserves a lot of credit for all they do making this course the gem that it is.

I'm going to hit some of the classics I mentioned above. Just wanted to see if anyone has any updated recomendations for "must not miss" courses. You all were a tremendous help in planning my first trip.
I don't think I'm going to stray too far from I-35. I'll drive down from KS to San Antonio and head back. I've heard good things about Gonzales and Round Top, but this time if I venture off I-35, it will be to Dripping Springs and Wimberly.
Here's a few that I haven't played. Which one's are worth it?
Dallas area:
Cedar Hill....told I should play these 36
Carrolton....I saw Greenbelt, I think, but not played J.P.
Irving...?
McKinney...?
Weatherford...?
Austin area:
Georgetown...an 18 and a 9 holer. Are they both good?
Leander...two 9's. Anyone played?
Bartholowmew...I saw this course and was liking the terrain. I couldn't find any marked tees, though. Has this condition been improved in the last 2 years?
Zilker...?
Dripping Springs...the country club sounds like a must.
Live Oak...27 holes now?
San Antonio... Lackland...is this a new course? Or still the only course in town?
Thanks in advance for the help!!!

On the way though DFW try to check out Cedar Hill, it's nice to be in a park where all that's really there is DG. In the Austin area Round Rock (Old Settlers) and Pease are both great courses, RR for the big arms and Pease for the more accurate shots. Wimberley is a must play if you have a chance, two great courses. Lago Vista has a few of it own challenges, but it definately holds some memories for me (those of you who were there know what I'm talking about). I haven't got to check out Twin Parks, but I have not heard anything negtive about the establishment.
Have fun, and of course, let us know your thoughts.

I really like Rivery in Georgetown (18 hole). The city put a hike and bike trail through some of the holes by the river. Make sure to send a spotter ahead to keep bikers from getting denoginized when playing these holes.
I've never played San Gabriel (9 hole) in Georgetown or the Leander course(s).
Bart is under construction. It's down to 14 holes. There still aren't any tee signs but this will change after the construction is finished and any needed redesigning is complete.
There are no baskets at Zilker right now and they won't be back in the ground until early 2006. That area of the park is used for parking during the Christmas festivities.
Twin Parks in Dripping Springs has two nice courses, mountain bike trails, paintball, and a great clubhouse.
Have fun.

Ok, You need to hit Garland Autoban and Dallas's new course at Samuel Crawford.
You should also add Grapevine and Ideal Golf Ranch (pay to play)
Greenbelt is ok, but there are better courses out there. Jimmy Porter is closed for at least another month.
Take San Saba off your list, those 3 courses are gone for ever. :(
Play Live Oak, I think they have like 36 holes and growing out there. Some of them are TOUGH (as my 1st hole in the 2nd round out there showed)

Definately play Wimberley and Live Oak in this area. On the way from Wimberley to Live Oak try to stop in at San Marcos and I can show you the course here.
Lackland is on the Air Force base and you need someone in the Air Force to get you in. I have heard it is a great course so if you give a few days notice I am sure a group of locals will go with you.
Have a fun trip.

I've played a lot of these some of you all mentioned. I did pretty good seeing 23 courses over two four day vacations the last two years considering all the driving time, I had the family, shortest daylight hours of the year, and squeezing lots of non-disc golf stuff in between courses.
I noticed that Ideal Golf Ranch was in Ft. Worth. Is this fly 18 on a ball golf course? Anyone played it?
What is Samuel Crawford? A city or a park? I can't find either one in the directory. You did say it was new. What is it like?
San Saba is no more. That was a special place I'll never get to see. Does anyone know why the course evaluations were done if these courses have been gone most of the year?
Thanks for everyone's help. Sounds like the "new" courses for me to hit this year will be...
Cedar Hill (2 courses)
Georgetown (2 courses)
Dripping Springs (2 courses)
Live Oak (27-36 or more holes)
Also might play Lackland in San Anotonio and Ideal Golf Ranch in Ft. Worth.
I'll also try to get a round in at Bear Creek, Pease, and Wimberly this time around. Many other killer courses in Texas , but only so much time. :(

the best courses in central texas are in this the only right order
1. wimberly hill
2. redrock blue tees
3. wimberly meadows
4. waco beast
5. round rock
6. circle c slaughter creek metro park
7. dripping springs hill course championship tees
8. dripping springs shire championship tees
9. lago
10.temple live oak
but if san saba was still a round it would be 1 2 and 3
that being said i've enjoyed every course i've ever played on
but disc golf is an evovlving game what with longer faster more durable discs coming out every month or so and some courses might need to evolve along with these new discs or what once was a challenging hole may now be easier than it once was but these 10 courses will always be a challenge because they were designed well. the courses that aren't designed all that great are also plentyful but i will not give my top ten of poorly designed courses as it may offend some

Samual Crawford is a new course with 9 holes in the ground as of a few weeks ago. This may be the best course in North Texas when it is done. The park is located off Elam and Prarie View (Off the top of my head) near 175 and 20 (also near 635)
If you play this one, you can play Garland too, it is only a few miles up 635.
Ideal Golf Ranch is a Fly 18 course. He said it is the best course he has done as far as disc golf. It is a horible golf course for Ball Golfers. Lots of trees with a lot of distance thown in. (the course is laid out in a oak tree stand)

Circle C over Pease?
The Hill over the Meadow?
Just kidding, that's a pretty good list. How many "north" Texas courses would make it in if allowed?
I forgot to mentioned that I played Garland last time up. Lots of downhill bombs through the trees.
Samuel Crawford and Ideal Golf Ranch sound fun, espescially the later. I'll just have to see if I got the time.

I just played Circle C this week with Justin L. and that course rocks. I would say it would be in my top 5 courses in the country that I have played, and it is a way better course than peace and that is saying something.
1) Delavega
2) San Saba
3) Circle C
4) Wimberly
5) Tom Bass /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Crawford the best in North Texas.

My wife and I are spending a few days in the Austin area at the end of February (looking for a house). My wife suggested that we stay at Twin Parks one night and play the tourney there on Feb. 25th.
How far is Twin Parks (Dripping Springs) from Leander in drive time?

Lackland is on the Air Force base and you need someone in the Air Force to get you in. I have heard it is a great course so if you give a few days notice I am sure a group of locals will go with you.
Chris
Anyone have any other information on this course? I was on Lackland for a few days last month and had no idea they had a disc golf course. I'm sure I'll be going back soon and would love to check this out. Man, I even had my bag with me since I stopped to play the Waco Beast on the way down from Cedar Hill.

The Live Oak people can help you info on Lackland. I myself dont know much about it but I know Paul Taylor (disc coach) and Jimbob Karshis (Gecko i think) have some info and have been out there.

Live Oak will have 40 permanent holes in the next couple of weeks, in time for the Ice Bowl on 1/28. The latest holes are 10A, 10B and a redesigned 11A (close to 800 ft I hear.) 10A and 10B will be on a peninsula surrounded by lake water on both sides. They run parallel to hole 9.
We'll only need 2 extra holes this year to have two 21 hole courses for LOSO!

Another trip to Texas in the books. 7 new courses played for a total of 28 TX courses played in my 3 short visits to the state.
Bear Creek, Grapevine, TX... I can't say enough for this course. I played two very different rounds from 2 seperate pads on every hole. Every shot on this course is a blast. I espescially like the radical terrain near the creek. My best shot on the course was laying down a bomb roller into the headwind through the gap from 6 long's pad. Too bad I 3 putted from 40 feet!
Lester Lorch Park, Cedar Hill, TX... The directions to the course "seemed" pretty simple. When I pulled in to the parking lot with the Lorch Park sign, I thought I was there. Directions said to follow trail down to the pond where both courses began. I followed an unmarked trail through the woods before luckily finding the pond. After sliding down the hill, trudging through the muddy area around the lake, and jogging all over the place, I realize that it was the unmarked drive with the closed gate that was well after the Lorch Park sign that I was supposed to take. Getting back to my car involved climbing over fences that were buried in cedar trees. I was worn out before I started golfing.
The courses were great though. The beaver course had many shots were I played a full mid-range. Accuracy was emphasized by the thick cedar trees lining the distinguished fairways. Great balance of righty and lefty holes for both courses. The coyote course was like the beaver course, only shorter and a little tighter. The holes involved mostly long putter shots. They were at a range that played tough for me in that my accuracy suffered both from easing off my mids and over powering the putter. The shortness of this course made my over par round feel pretty humiliating. I think playing this course more would be good for my game. This was a very beautiful remote place where disc golf can really be enjoyed. One thing I couldn't help but notice was how much work it was to clear out the fairways and walkways, not to mention how hard it must have been to pour those pads! The courses flowed extreemly well. Oh yeah, the chainstar baskets were grade A also.
Rivery Park, Georgetown, TX... Again the directions to the course were worse than horrible. I found a site where someone listed some corrections to these directions. Those were a bit different, but just as bad. Something has got to be done to fix the situation with the course directory. I couldn't find Tees for Holes #1, 3, 12, 17, or 18. Some of the signs had been pulled out of the ground. 17's tee was right next to 17's basket. I played what looked like 6 long's tee (from a map I printed from the cntxdglove site) to the new pin location. It looked like 18 had recently been redone also. Anyways, some of the shots were really cool, but others were just no good. This was a pretty highly reputed course, so I figured it was worth enduring the challenge of navigating.
San Gabriel Park, Georgetown, TX.... The course had only a couple of its tee sings left. The tees were worn areas of dirt amidst the grass. There were supposed to be 2 tees on every hole. I couldn't find the short tee for hole 5 or 6 or 7 or 8. That was pretty frustrating. It seems to me that courses shouldn't be installed and advertised with the course directory if they can't be marked or kept up.
Pease Park, Austin, TX... This was my second time playing at Pease. The first time was with a 21 hole config. It's not often that a course loses 3 holes and becomes better in the process. This is the case with Pease though. The creek that runs through Pease is one of the funnest to play around and over in all of disc golf. Every hole out there is a beauty and tons of fun. If Pease had concrete tee pads, it would be one of the best courses anywhere. Those eroded holes in the ground can't be more environmentally friendly than concrete tees. They are a safety hazard. It's cool you all are trying your best to get the situation fixed. I also liked the old 18 pin placement a bit better. The park is top-notch though; I could spend all day there.
Twin Parks Country Club, Dripping Springs, TX... This place was amazing. I'm sure I can't explain half of what was done to make this place a resort with courses of high calibur. The "clubhouse" has it all from a big screen with gaming systems, other games including a chess table, poker table, ping pong table, and brand new pool table, to nice rooms (inexpensive) with a fully accomodating facility. Two full 18 hole courses with red, white, and blue tees. 3 practice putting baskets. Plenty of discs for sale.
Park Hill Course: This was the rougher of the two courses. Many shots involve navigating over the tree line while adjusting for wind and elevation. Beautiful scenery. While running around planning my shots, I about ran straight into the herd of elk that is kept on the property. I made two 450'+ 2's from the long tees on holes 4 (difficult hole!) and 9. I lost a blue Ch. Wraith on 4 short if anyone finds it. I was -2 and bogey free on the long course through hole 12. My best 3 was probably 10 long. Then I bogeyed 5 straight. Though the shire course was recommended over the hill by many, I'd say the hill is every bit as good. Rocks were painted red, white, and blue to show the direction to the next respective tees. This was extreemly helpful and very cool to look at. Distances marked in white on black painted rock was also a simple, but great idea.
Park Shire: While the hill course combined tees red/white, white/blue, or red/white/blue, the shire had several holes with 3 sets of tees. The difference between the blues and the reds was pretty significant. The wind and the trees made par pretty difficult to break, even on the red tees. The holes had good design, keeping the short ones on the tricky side. Most of the holes play under or around trees rather than over them. I didn't card too many birds. Park Shire had excellent tee signs located at the long tees, where they should be. The course even had solar lighted baskets at night and lighted tees on the shorts!
Anyone planning on playing out here should plan to spend the day if possible and stay the night. If you live in Texas, a membership would be well worth it. I hope the vision for the perfection of this place continues into the future.

Out of the 28 TX courses I've seen, almost all of them I would call "great" courses. There are a lot of things that go into rating a course. Design, convenience, tees and pins, etc. I'm basically just giving an overall impression of the "fun factor" of a travelling disc golfer. Here, in a pretty flexible order, are probably my 10 favorites...
Wimberly (2)
Dripping Springs (2)
Red Rock
Arlington
Grapevine
Austin (Pease)
Crowley
Round Rock
Lago Vista
Cedar Hill (2)
Next 10 would include...
Lewisville (Lake)
Garland
Waco (East)
Waco (West)
San Marcos
Dallas (B.B. Owen)
Austin (Circle C)
Live Oak
Temple
Ft. Worth
Some courses I still want to check out...McKinney, Carollton (Greenbelt), Austin (Bartholomew), Round Top, Gonzales, & Lackland
I'm sure there are others that make the A list, but are farther from I-35.

When you plan your next trip to Tejas, let me know, and we'll be glad to put you up for a night or two in Austin if you need free places to stay to help offset the cost of your trip.
Plus, I always enjoy playing with new golfers.
Oh, and skip Bart (it's a sh*t hole...literally). Instead, plan on spending a day at Dave Moody's Red Rock Disc Golf ranch...many people consider it one of the very best courses in all of Texas. Plus, Dave has a cabin on the property that you can rent, too.

I went to Florida for last years winter break.
This year, I want to come back to Texas for trip #4!
I'm sure I'll find time to play some classics, but, as always, I want to check out some new courses! I've listed the courses I've played in previous posts on this thread. I'd like to ask about some others. I'm trying to put a schedule together. Location and quality are probably the biggest factors on yeah or nay to puting a course on the schedule.
I'll probably be in the Dallas and Austin areas for about 4 days some time from Dec. 26th to Dec. 31
Here are the courses that I'd like to know more about. Maybe someone who has played them could compare them with one another or with some of the other TX courses that I have played? Any info would be (and has been) helpful!
Dallas area (east)...
I might try to get as many of these courses in on the first day of the trip. Which ones?
Rockwall, TX: Harry Myers DGC.
It sounds like this new course is a must play. A ways east though.
McKinney, TX: Alex Clark Memorial DGC.
Short but nice course that is challenging from the long tees?
Lewisville, TX: Leonard L. Woods Park.
How does this course rate? Worth playing?
Carrollton, TX: Greenbelt Park.
Carrollton, TX: Jimmy Porter Park.
I played a few holes on one of these courses in the dark. The parking lot was a little bit lower than a busy road that ran right alongside the course. I think it was Jimmy Porter. Seemed like I should come back and play it. How do these two compare?
Dallas, TX: Crawford Memorial Park.
How is this course? It has a swamp? Is it really that hard to navigate? I think this course was still being built when I last posted. How did it turn out?
Plano, TX: Shawnee Park.
Is this course worth playing?
Dallas/ Ft. Worth area (not east)...
Might play some of these on the last day of the trip. Might also play the Vet again and/or Bear Creek.
Irving, TX: Fritz Park.
This course is close enough to Grapevine. Is this the best 9 holer in Dallas/Ft. Worth area?
Ft. Worth, TX: Ideal Disc Golf Ranch.
I don't see this one listed anymore. Did this Fly 18 get pulled?
Haltom City, TX: North Park.
New course sounds like it's good, but still under some development. I don't know that I'll make it this far west this time. How is the course?
Weatherford, TX: Weatherford DGC.
How does this course compare?
Austin area...
I'll have the most of a couple of days here. I want to hit Peace Park again, but I doubt I'll have time to make it back down to Wimberly, which was my favorite. Maybe next time (when there are no more new courses to explore, yeah right)...
Waco, TX: Woodway Park.
I know the Cameron courses are the most reputed and I have had the chance to enjoy them. This course seems to have an excellent description as well...
Round Rock, Brushy Creek DGC.
I love Old Settlers and might play it again. Is Brushy Creek a fun short course? Tricky elevation changes? Thick cedars sounds like Seawright?
Leander, TX: Lambos on the Hill.
Leander, TX: Lake Line Ranch DGC.
These two 9 holers don't sound like they compare with the rest of the areas courses. What is with the tower?
Leander, TX: Williamson County DGC.
This just sounds like a must play. Tough par 61. Is the course marked? Is there more than one set of tees? How are the tees marked?
Lago Vista, TX: The Resort.
We played here and wanted to come back. I read on a thread that this one has been pulled for construction. I also read on the course directory that this course was called Arrowhead (which I don't remember) and that it had been changed to 9 holes. What is up with this place?
Austin, TX: Bartholomew Park.
I went here on my first trip in December of 2004. It was not marked well at all and I think it was only 14 holes. I didn't play it as I couldn't figure it out in a reasonable amount of time. I heard there have been some recent design changes. Is the course navigable and better than ever? How are the tees marked?
I'd also ask about other TX attractions that the family might be interested in. Something that would take a couple hours or less. In past trips we've been to...
The Hyatt Tower, The Dallas Aquarium, Gallaria, a safari trip/ climbing wall/ cave tour north of San Antonio, and the Alamo and River Walk.
Thanks for the help!

I just moved to Austin a couple months ago, and have played a couple of courses on your list.
Brushy creek: It's a fun little course. there's some good elevation changes and a couple tight fairways. I would advise hitting it up if you're trying to play as many courses as possible. I enjoy it.
Bartholomew: I played this a month or so ago and had the same reaction you mentioned in your post. There has been chatter of reviving the course, but it doesn't sound like it is finished yet. I would avoid it for now, unless someone pipes up that the course is complete.
Wimberley: I know you said you were planning on skipping this, and I wanted to let you know you definitely need to skip it. Circle R ranch is temporarily closed for remodeling, so if you did drive out there, you wouldn't find any golf to be played anyway.

Might play some of these on the last day of the trip. Might also play the Vet again and/or Bear Creek. Veteran's, Z-Boaz, and Crowley are your best choices in Tarrant County. All 3 are very challenging in their own way.
Ft. Worth, TX: Ideal Disc Golf Ranch.

The McKinney course is great, very well maintained in a nice park. The long tees make it several shots harder, and you'll hit a few more trees!
Shawnee in Plano is a pretty cool nine hole course. Nothing particularly memorable, but a fun course nonetheless. Instead I would go to.......
Bethany Lakes in Allen. It's fairly open 9-hole with some nice lakes in a park setting, and has challenging OB. Hole #2 was in the long placement as of a few days ago, making it one heck of a hole. Avoiding a circle-5 on that one can be tough... especially if the wind is blowing.
Good luck!

P.S. - If you're looking for a good afternoon in Austin, the Searight then Circle C option is a lot of fun too. Circle C is a lot of fun to play, though you have to accept the course is going to whip up on your (I play ma1 and am happy if I don't break +20) While it's very tough, it is a great course that's a lot of fun. Searight is nearby, and is fun to play. Though it's in a backwards layout right now, which I would generally recommend skipping if you have another course to play. If you don't want to drive far b/t courses, Searight is nice.
Also, don't forget the golden rule of Austin Disc Golf. Try to find someone who knows the course so you don't get lost (Especially at Circle C)

DEFINITELY go play Harry Myers in Rockwall! Very well maintained with one of the coolest par 5s I've ever seen (#3 long). There are 2 spots that are tough to navigate your first time through: #3 is a giant dogleg-right once you get to the bottom of the hill on that fairway, and after #8 you have to walk downhill across #3's fairway...otherwise it flows very well. It's a Houck course, so you know its well designed, and the city really takes care of the park.
Crawford Park has some truly awesome holes with tight fairways and lots of elevation (heard someone compare it to North Carolina terrain), but the course is usually in bad shape. Its in a bad part of town so nobody ever plays it...there's trash on the ground on several holes and last time I went a few of the baskets had been cut to pieces. You definitely need a guide the first time through. Hole #2 long is one of my favorite holes period.

You are sleeping on some must see courses in San Antonio. A new course was jsut put in this year ... Bryan McClain Disc Course. It is a VERY technical course where scores range from way over par to a few under depending on how straight you are driving :o
We have mini's on Saturday mornings at 9:15.

Thanks for the heads up, guys.
I'm leaving tomorrow, so any more help today would be great.
Here is the tentative plan...
Thursday: McKinney, Rockwall, Carrollton Greenbelt, Carrollton JP
I would like to know if I should swap LL Woods in Lewisville for one of the Carrollton courses.
Friday: Waco (Woodway Park), Round Rock (Brushy Creek), and Austin (Pease).
Saturday: Leander (Wilco) and Round Rock (Old Settlers)
Batholomew Park isn't finished, right? Lago Vista is pulled right now, right?
Sunday: Irving and Grapevine or Arlington. Might go to the Dallas Zoo also.
I could possibly trade out Haltom City on Sunday. Is the course worth it? Is Fritz a good 9 holer?
Thanks,
Michael Schoenhofer

I would swap the Lake Lewisville Course for the Carrollton Greenbelt course. The lake is much more challenging and alot more fun. If you're heading down I-35 to Austin I would try to check out the Temple course (I think it's just east of I-35), last time I played there I remember it being worth the stop. Fritz is a nice park but it's not terribly difficult.

Ok, thanks. I changed my hotel plans to stay in Arlington Sat. night. We'll play the Vet in the morning and then do the Ft. Worth Zoo. Then we'll play Haltom City if someone tells me it's in good shape or more likely Bear Creek on the way back home.

90 hours and 1350 miles later, I gotta say we had a great time. I played 12 rounds on 8 new courses, which would bring my total courses up to 35! Here are my reviews on the courses that we played this time through
McKinney, Alex Clark Memorial DGC: 12/27/07
I could not locate the long tees that were shown on the course map. I through from a flag on hole 1 in a different location than that shown on the map and lost my first shot in the drink. I realized that marked or not, this course was way too muddy to throw from any other tees than the concrete ones. I shot 48 and consider this score to be well over par. Open and short holes would be great for beginners, but dont provide challenge to the competitive player. Sounds like McKinney is building a new course nearby that will be a lot tougher. I would have liked to play the longer course here, but there needs to be marked tees that are not in the mud.
Rockwall, Harry Myers DGC: 12/27/07
This course was outstanding! Two sets of concrete tees for most holes with 2 sets of excellent tee signs. Blue and red color system corresponds with PDGA skill levels of 950 and 850. Par was 64 for blue and 65 for red. The par 4s and 5s on this course were incredible. Not much extra length, but plenty more technical. Just like good par 4 and 5 design should be. Loved par 5 hole 3 and how the lake was extended on par 5 hole 17, using 8 marked trees to define OB. Houck did a great job of putting strategy into every hole out here. I played with some locals and shot 70. I know I could have done worse. Plamen shot 67 and beat me for the first time! I played another round and shot 59. And that score could have been better as I was only E on the back 9. That is the great thing about these relatively new higher par courses: scoring variety. Tons of shot and hole type variety, I recommend everyone to play this course.
Waco, Woodway Park: 12/28/07
Averaging just under 300 per hole, this course was tougher than the distance suggests. Winds coming off the lake, sloped greens, and pesky cedars sprinkled throughout the fairways made it challenging. Concrete tees and huge numbers only for tee signs and those were located too close to the tee pad. Negative was that the baskets were single chains. Shot 54. Not a great course, but it was enjoyable.
Round Rock, Brushy Creek DGC: 12/28/07
This one lived up to the standard with concrete tees and great signs. The course was on the short side, but it placed a big demand on accuracy. Most holes played with cedar trees to both sides and those that were mostly open played in the wind. Some cool greens that had fast drop offs to one or more sides. Shot 56. Despite my routine taping of the hand, two fingers had already blistered and bled by this time in the trip. I wasnt going to let the pain keep me from playing. This course would certainly improve my mid-range game. It reminded me of Cedar Hill or a better Seawright.
Austin, Pease Park: 12/28/07
Ive played this course almost every trip down. I just love this place. It is my favorite course in Austin. Shot 60. Id guess it as par 57 with par 4s on holes 2, 4 or 6, and 13. I think 13 and 14 were new. 13 was a great uphill dogleg par 4. I also think the signs were new out there and those were great. I hope someday the powers that be will come around and agree to concrete tees out there.
Round Rock, Williamson Co. Park: 12/29/07
Wow! This was a beautiful natural type course that played through an area that was pretty much exclusive to DG. Concrete tees and large rocks with numbers only for tee signs. Par 61 that was tough to beat for a 950 golfer. Par 4s and a killer par 5 featured doglegs with demanding landing areas. Fairways played around or under those gnarly TX trees (what are they called?) and off the fairway was pretty much jail. I shot 58 and was really happy with this score. This course reminded me of circle R and for a flat piece of land, it was a great design. Some holes played similar to others, but this didnt subtract from the fun. Im really glad I played this one.
Temple, Lions Park: 12/29/07
I wasnt feeling up to Old Settlers after all the golf on this trip. I decided to check out the new course in Temple. Im really glad I did as this one was a jewel. Two sets of concrete tees on many holes with small, but very nice tee signs. Very fair for lefty on this course. Par 58. The par 4s played long and open, which may not have been optimal, but the rest of the course was great. I especially liked the short down-hiller (8 ) and the tough par 3 with both tons of trees and a bunch of elevation (11). Loved the elevation changes and variety of this course. Also liked the plentiful OB that was well indicated on the tee signs. I shot 57 from the long tees.
Waco, William Cameron Park: 12/29/07
Had just enough time to play the classic front 9 here. Plamen played liberal cali and I played conservative California. Though a shortish course, the elevation changes on this 9 make it very fun. Shot 23.
Haltom City, North Park: 12/30/07
Yet another new course in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area, I was in the neighborhood to check this one out. It didnt take long to figure out that this course was a work in progress. The tee sign maps had been ripped off on all holes but a couple. The baskets were of two different types that did not follow a pattern as to which were on which holes. The baskets were numbered incorrectly. Most holes had 2 or more baskets that were possible targets. It got frustrating try to navigate the course. It took almost 3 hours and should have taken half that time. There was a tree indicating a tee area for hole 10. It took forever to find, but when I did, I saw that it was the wrong one. The correct one was labeled 11 and in a different area. The glory hole (hole 11) was pretty cool, with a basket on a platform up in a multi trunk tree. The plywood of the platform had been vandalized and there was trash in the park. No alcohol allowed in the park, but there were several trees that had been decorated with beer cans. As to the actual course play, there were several fun holes. Many lefty holes and also a few where a roller shot was a distinct possibility. Shot 52. Im sure this course will be much improved after the baskets are all the nice chainstars (with numbers) I saw on half the holes and the tee sign maps with course flow directions are reinstalled.
Crowley, Bicentennial Park: 12/30/07
I was told that this course had a redesign since I was there 3 years ago, so I went down to play it again. About half the holes played a bit different, mainly in the middle of the course. It is now a 20-hole course. I liked it about the same as the last layout. Still 3 sets of tees: the short tees were not as short as they used to be and the longs werent quite as long. This did put them about 4-5 strokes different each, which would correspond with the breaks in the PDGA skill levels. The funny thing about the tees was that they had blue and red switched as red was the long, white middle, and blue as the shortest set of tees. Id also say that if concrete isnt realistic for this course, the huge boards used to mark the tees should be sank close to flush with the ground. Though a safety hazard, they sure keep you from foot faulting! Another problem is that the baskets are numbered wrong. This confused me when I was trying to figure out which basket to throw to one hole. This wouldn't take much effort to fix. All criticism aside, this is a great course that is well worth checking out. Great variety, plenty of trees and some elevation changes (usually both). From the long tees, there were many, many holes that played par 3.3 to 3.5, but no true par 4s. I shot 54 from the whites and 57 from the reds, which I would consider under course par, whatever that may be.
We also had a good time when we werent discing. The Ft. Worth Zoo was very nice. Not huge, but a very nice facility with great animals and exhibits. The monkey jungle was huge and I liked the reptile house. In Austin, my wife and I went down to 6th st. We went to a bar called Buffalo Bills that had no less than 8, $1400 foosball tables, all in great shape. No smoking inside was a nice change! When we were walking back to our car, we saw some guy in a gas mask doing something with a group watching him. He was making outer space themed paintings using only spray paint, a box knife blade, a golf disc, and some newspaper. The most incredible thing was that he was working in a frenzy to some spaced out techno music: each painting was completely different and it was taking him only 7 minutes apiece! We bought one from him for very reasonable and when I asked his name, he only said Kerry. I found this video, which shows the same techniques, so I would have to say this is the same guy, though the name is different. Austin is a fun town.

next time you need to play the 2 other courses in Waco..you played their course that doesn't get much use at all and the other two are great.
McKinney long pads aren't "LONG"...adds a few strokes to the round, but not a lot longer.
Rockwall is definately our best, new addition.

Not to nit-pick or anything, but I think you mean 4 or 7 (6 is pretty short near the road, right before you go under the bridge). Glad to hear someone calling #2 a par four though. I know I hate that hole, and am continually feeling bad for fouring it.

The best place to play in Texas is in my back yard! Lotsa food, beer, music. Never to windy. Gotta look out for the land mines though!
Seriously though I played at Searite for the first time the other day. It is my new favorite course. Next has gotta be the ROCK!

You need to come over the East Texas next time. The courses in Tyler are very well maintained and can be very challenging. Our Blue course is a great play and the Red course also has some very challenging holes. We have two other courses that are OK as well. Once you leave Tyler, Nachadoches has two nice courses. Pecan is good course and Pioneer is a blast.
