I like to play disc with minis around the house. So my question is what do you guys use for a basket for playing mini?

Little baskets. You can buy them from Discovering the World. Or you can make one out of pvc.

I like the gold one! $75ish

Try this addy:

MINIisota Pole Hole
http://www.spacestar.net/users/bogie6/minisota.html

I have one of these and they are great. My brother-in-law and his dad have one also, so when the holidays come around or we know we are all going to be together we set up a course in the house or the backyard. All of ours are in the 'glow' plastic and it really can get fun after the kids go to bed. So far I have not broken anything in the house, but my wife keeps warning me.

These catch most minis, I throw all weights at them including the candy ones form INNOVA.

I know the "serious" mini disc golf games start when the kids go to bed, but my kids have a blast throwin them around the house with me. They have a lot of success with the small discs and you can teach them about keeping the disc level, stance, and even steps, all with the mini! Fun for the whole family!

I do think my mini basket needs a deeper basket, but it still works...

I'll try to post some pics, but prolly not til after x-mas...

Nothing wrong with that. I made my first regular sized basket out of home depot stuff and it worked great.

But I wouldn't go back to that after using the Mach-V in the backyard now. :)

Spoil yourself with the Mini-Mach. You're worth $85.

All kidding aside, I am a mini-golf enthusiast, and I prefer the skillshot mini target. It seems to spit less than the metal baskets, probably because you get less bounce out of the cloth. If this were a "What's in your mini bag?" thread, I would post the following:

1 Champ Aero- tee shots, big hyzers
1 golf weight Aero- the ocasional thumber 1 Champ Aviar- Mid range overstable
1 beat magnet- It is my humble opinion that the mini magnet is the Roc of mini DG. I use this one for touch shots.
1 little flyer (little version)- My putter

If you've ever played regular disc golf with me, you know that I don't take it that seriously. If you've ever played mini golf with me, you'd know that I'm obsessed.:D

What's in the mini-bag:

Purple Champion Aviar, 2k3 Halloween Classic stamp
Main driver. Straight and hyzer shots, all ranges.

Blue "tuned" golf-weight Aero, 1999 SoCal Champs stamp
Turn-over driver. Mini-thumbers. Mini-rollers.

White golf-weight Aero, purple 2k3 Golden State stamp
Putter.

Orange Champion Aviar, 2k4 EIEIO stamp
Marker disc and good luck charm.

That's all you need to win a World Championship! :) I was thinking about using the little discs from the Wham-O keychains as the marker disc for mini.

Dec 16 2004, 02:07 PM
I have a bunch of minis for tossing in my apartment, but never knew that people actually had drivers, mid ranges, and putters for mini golf. How long of holes do you guys normally throw and where to need such discs?

Dec 16 2004, 11:39 PM
Mini Rollers???

This is why you're my hero.

rhett
Dec 16 2004, 11:59 PM
:D

There was a hole at Worlds that begged for the mini-roller, and I obliged. It was a decent distance, and the basket was on the other side of a huge pine with low hanging branches. The turnover line (the basket was right of the tee) wasn't there; it only led to middle-tree. The tree was big enough around that probably only Stevie could hyzer route it.

So I broke out the mini-roller and practically circled the pin for the drop in deuce. There was a left-to-right breeze that gave the mini-cut-roller the bounce to the right so that it could hold the cut line and roll right up there.

Or something like that. It's not like it was my best drive of the round or anything. :)

You mean it slipped and just happened to roll up near the basket?

That's what I thought.

It just seems so ridiculous, but it is such a blast. Especially if you try to be serious and go through your regular putting routine! I can barely do it without busting up laughing every time. :)

bruce_brakel
Dec 18 2004, 03:34 PM
Rhett: how long do they make the holes for Mini Worlds? I used to know of a mall that would be a great venue for an indoor winter mini tournament because other than the theater, a restaurant and one anchor store, the place was deserted. Do you think the PDGA would X-tier such a thing?

At worlds in K.C. I got out to about 275' with a heavy weight on the driving range

rhett
Dec 18 2004, 04:40 PM
I thought the course at Worlds should've been longer because they had all kinds of great space and trees to work with.

I don't know what good distances are, though. 100-225 might be good ranges. I've been thinking about how to run a mini-tourney in SoCal. I don't know if it's sanctionable, though. A one day 3 or 4 round ordeal could be a lot of fun.

slo
Dec 18 2004, 05:35 PM
Sanctionable or not, that sounds like an idea which will fly...an 'attaboy' in advance. ;)

I've seen mini courses @ SoCal/PDGA events, before, but it was casual...one played between rounds, etc. I think it was the last Sylmar [upper course], and one of the SoCal Champs. On a 'donation' basis. Boffo.

Dec 28 2004, 02:28 AM
So, has anyone see/thrown the Mini Ultrastar? Or the ministar? I have seen on sunkingdiscs.com a top down view of the new discraft mini mold that is supposedly a mini version of the Ultrastar and I have a burning desire to find out how they fly. Any reviews?

Dec 28 2004, 02:44 AM
for distance throws with minis it has got to be the metal innova markers. they can go an easy 250 for most players. i have seen my friend throw all of his discs on hole 23 at de laveaga and then in a fit of rage due to the crappy results of all his throws, reach for his metal mini and park it for a 2 ft putt.
lucky... maybe

Didn't know there were so many mini-enthusiasts.

I'll be a mini-enthusiast when they finally put the electronics in them so I can find them in the bushes. In fact, I've lost many a mini that was thrown perfectly in the middle of a football field.

My longest mini is home-made.

You simply use tin can lids. Not the kind that give you just the flat flight plate. You need to use the ones that give you a lip and look like a small frisbee. The can opener I used came from Europe, I can't remember the name. Different can openers I suppose would produce slightly different lids.

A single lid flips like a humphrey flyer. Glue 2 together and you get a good short stable mid range disc up to 200-250 feet depending on technique. Glue 3 together and if you're man enough and have good technique, you'll throw it over 300 feet, I suspect. I personally can't throw it much over 250 feet, it's a little too stable for me. I forget but I think LARGE lids are flippier than SMALL lids.

WARNING. Those suckers get lost SOOO easy. You'll want a friend on the other end.

ANOTHER WARNING. These mini's are really flat. If one is coming at your face at 30-50 mph, there's a good chance you won't even see it.

Dec 31 2004, 01:49 AM
The first time I ever played Mini golf was at Am Worlds 2001 in Nashville and I won! I have been hooked ever since. I can't remember the name of the park...two rivers? It was the coolest mini course I have ever played.
How about a mini in a driver mold? I wanna throw a mini CE Orc! I picked up a metal mini in Florida from G's that is a driver mold with a wide rim. It would be awesome in CE plastic.

A viper would be cool but was thinking of something a little longer. Maybe all that would be needed is the overstability.

Okay the mini basket has been in storage while all the x-mas crap was out. The top 'leans' now- it did not before. I needed a deeper basket, so I stole the laundry basket and made it work. The blue basket is a little hard to see, so I either need to paint the whole thing, or get some lighter coping to put along the top edge of the basket. Now this is a cheap-o model- I was going for cheap- not aesthetics, so please dont rag on it too hard. I spent a total of <$12 on this. I bought everything except the blue laundry basket, and the pvc glue. The top portion and the part under the basket are planter saucers. The chains hang from cotter pins. Here she is:

Yep, got plenty of old plastic that could be revived. Just trying to make it out of as much disc as possible. I figure one for the bottom. 2 or 3 to make a basket with the top 1 or 2 just being the rim. And one for the top. Throw sand in the PVC pipe to make it sit and maybe strap some lead weights under the bottom disc. Add some plastic chains and voila. Now I just gotta do it lol.

It is about the same size as Johns at CR2 in the lodge (thats where this addiction began...) It is bigger then the DGA one, but that is too small to actually USE...The ones you see with frisbees as the top and/or basket are ultrastars or a big catch disc like that- not golf disc size...To each his own I guess

A buddy of mine won two mini baskets a few years ago in Cedar Rapids IA. They were made out of 7.5 gallon buckets. Really sturdy and catch very well. I think the guys name was Charlie Vissik?? Anyway I have been looking for 7.5 gal buckets for some time but can't seem to locate any. I will try and get a pic of it and post it.

I finally got a mini-ultrastar. It's a bit bigger than a regular mini, a bit heavier, and a bit deeper. I think it's going to make a great driver. It's overstable, but has great glide. I think it's going to be a great addition to the mini-bag.

It seems like it's made of D-plastic, as opposed to the magnets, which seem like X-plastic.

Has anybody else thrown these? They're fricken great!

Come on, if you really want to use as much disc as possible...don't use plastic chains, take the flight plates from those discs you used the rims of for the top half of the basket, and whittle strips off of them or something.

Apr 04 2005, 07:36 PM
Actually I just finished my basket and I decided to go with Whammo Frisbees. I found that the minis may not even fit in a basket made out of discs due to the wing. I got 2 moonlighter whammo discs and now have a glow in the dark mini basket. Even went upscale and bought miniature golden chain. Looks sweet. I will get some pics of it and post it up here. Total cost was 22 bucks I think.
