The Stoney Hills Private Disc Golf Farm is officially under construction. Located between Prosperity and Newberry South Carolina, the course should be finished by Late spring 2005. The plan is to install 18 holes with an additional 9 holes sometime in the near future.
The course will wind its way through 46 acres of large hills, 2 creeks, a small beach grove forest, and a 2 acre pond that is in development. Any help in course design, layout, and construction is welcomed....Camping, fishing, horseback riding, and paintball will all be part of the Stoney Hills Disc Golf Experience.

For anyone who visited the website link (above)....the layout is being revised and the information on the website has been pretty well overhauled. The blessings and curses of having too much freedom in course design.

This is shaping up to be a challenging course, around 6500 feet with tremendous elevation change and lots of water, geared for the average pro and top amateur players. After this weekend we should 7-12 fairways cleared to throw, though still rough, and an assortment of temporary baskets to start playing parts of the course (thanks to James Stevenson, Dave Cannon, and Travis Sauls for the loaners). Hole-by-hole progress shown at the website.
looks like you have a TON of potential there. there is camp here in my area witha around 500 hundred acres that me and a friend are (the caretaker) planning shots on all the time. theres still a tremendous amount of work to be done but in time we could easily have 2 or 3 world class courses. :D

500 acres! You've made me claustrophobic on my 46!
I say go for it....and best of luck. There can never be too many courses---especially at a camp where new players can be introduced to the game. And surely they could spare 30 acres or so for a course.

Where is Newberry and Prosperity?

Jan 04 2005, 09:37 AM
Off I-26 between Columbia and Greenville, about 40 miles form Columbia.
Prosperity is the closest town, a small town of about 1500. The course is 5 miles from Prosperity, about 9 miles from the interstate.
Newberry is a larger town, perhaps 10,000, and a more familiar landmark for more people---if for no other reason than there are 3 "Newberry" exits on the interstate, so those driving up and down I-26 will recognize the location. The course is about 9 miles from Newberry.
Perhaps a more familiar reference is.....about 20 minutes or so from Crooked Creek Park.

Love to have you visit.
Unclear if you might visit soon, or sometime in the future. If soon, note that course is under construction; 6 or 7 holes can be played and the rest can be toured. That said, you're very welcome to come by and we'll show you what's there, and what's coming.
See website (above) for status of holes, and e-mail and phone numbers to contact us.
On the other hand, if you're talking about visiting sometime in the future, once we're complete, we hope to provide a great disc golf experience.

I can wait until it is finished. Am looking forward to seeing you design.

Thanks. We're curious how it will look ourselves.
Expect a lot of uphill and downhill and water (current model layout has water on 9 of 18 holes). There's also discussion of going ahead with 27 holes so we don't have to make painful choices of which ones to omit.

Those playing the ice bowl at Crooked Creek in Chapin are welcome to come by afterward, time permitting. It's 20 minutes or so up the road, more on less on the way if you're heading back towards Greenville.
Status of construction has changed little in past month due to brutal weekend weather and some resulting illnesses. Pond construction should begin very soon, which will help with design around the pond.

Revisions to design, and status of installation, available at
Stoneyhill Website (http://www.saulsinsurance.com/stoneyhill)
After a 2-month delay due to weeks of bad weather and the Earlewood Classic, we're back to creating new holes and changing some that we'd already showed to visitors. Holes 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7 and currently playable, albeit rough.
Pond construction has been pushed back several months, and course completion with it. However, as he days get longer and the land grading crews wind up, we should have 12 or more holes available to play in the near future.

Thanks to James Stevenson for dropping by Saturday and helping us clear a section between #3 & #4.
There are now 8 holes playable, with portable baskets. You still have a long walk, or 4-wheeler ride, to the first tee, and the 8th hole finishes a good distance away (but it's a nice place to walk). The rough is still rough, but getting tamed a little each week.
#1 has been redesigned. It's still a rip off the top of a huge hill, but instead of going 750 feet and climbing the base of the next hill, it now goes 400-500 feet, then cuts into the woods in front of the creek, so you need distance AND location on the drive.

Status Report:
Murphy's Law has been enforced with a vengeance, especially in regards to the tractor. Other delays involved the road construction---finally completed but long overdue---house construction, weather, and Chris's new family, have pushed back course completion.
Holes 1-8 are now in and playable. The rough is very rough, and tall grass in the fairway of #1 (due to tractor problems) risks losing discs.
Test tee-pads have been installed on 4 holes. We are trying carpet remnants, inverted to use the rubber backing for traction while providing a soft tee-pad. Other tee-pads are dirt, but in pretty good condition.
With the roads completed, we can now drive to and park at the #1 tee, eliminating the previous long walk. We still have a long walk back from the finish at #8; we anticipate throwing 2 temporary holes in the open areas, just to play back to the parking area.
As always, visitors are welcome to have a look, play the completed holes, provide opinions and ideas....or lend a hand if the mood strikes!

Status report---
We can currently play 10 holes (should be 11 by end of weekend). This is 5 (6) of the 8 permanent holes, plus 5 temporary holes Chris has set up in and near the pastures (When the course is finalized, we won't be using these areas).
We can now play a loop with a much shorter walk from the end back to #1.
Chris is now living on the property, so we have more time to schedule visitors.
The ultimate completion date has been pushed back, as the pond construction won't begin until homes are completed, and home construction has been delayed (but should start soon). However, we should have a complete, playable 18-hole layout, most of which will be on the final course, in the near future.
