Planning a trip south next year. Destination: Hill Country, Texas. I'll be on I-35 and will be looking for something between Wichita, KS and DFW to break up the long drive. Criteria for this excursion are as follows:
- Fewer than 5 miles from I-35
- 18 holes or exceptional 9
- Easy to find
- Easy to play (tee signs, good flow, etc... challenge is good)
- Reasonably free of angry huffers
Please, I'm not going to reroute my trip away from I-35. No replies suggesting I do so to hit such-and-such course.
Thanks in advance.

Steve,
We met after the USDGC in 2002 at the airport. When you get to DFW, shoot me an email.
[email protected] I can show you around DFW.

Okalhoma City )edmond)- arcadia Lake, two courses(red and blue) check course directory for better info.
Also Ardmore, Broadlawn park
Again I would check the directory but I believe these courses fit your criteria.
Have fun

Steve -
Kim and I played Herman Hills in Wichita a few years back comming back from TX. It's close to the I-35, easy to find and not a bad course at all! The time we played it, it was "angry huffer" free.
Have a great trip, tell the boys at the ranch hello, and ask BJ when he's going to start hitting some tournaments around here!

Steve:
You will want to check out both the Herman Hill and Oak Park courses in Wichita. Both have recently gone through some major improvements. Herman Hill now has two pin placements and two tee pads on each holes. Oak is now an 18 holes course. The PDGA course sites have not been updated for either course yet but should be soon (the directions to the courses are correct). There should be maps at both courses. Call the contact on Herman Hill (me) for more information.

Thanks, everybody. I'll see how the travel schedule shakes out. They all sound pretty good. I didn't get any comments on the Denton course though. I thought Bill Burns recommended that one a while back.
Hero: Yes I remember you from USDGC and I appreciate you confirming that I was indeed there.
Anita: I could ask BJ when he'll start playing tournaments again, but I already know the answer.

If you take I35 East, you got Denton, Lewisville (2 courses), Carrollton (2 courses), Coppell, and instead of going down 35 through downtown, if you take loop 12 you can hit Irving, Grandprarie, and SBU (private, but I have snuck in a round before)
I35W, you got Denton, Saganaw (ok, a little more than 5 miles) ZBoaz, (right at 5 Miles) and Crowley

Steve, the new course in Pauls Valley, OK is only a few miles off I-35. There aren't a lot of trees (about 7 holes have none whatsoever, but the wind will be blowing in different directions), but it has several nice holes.
It also has the most expensive tee markers I've ever seen: $300 each.

So is that course "in"? Where exactly is it located?

exit airport road.... follow around to the John Deer plant and then got to the airport. Its in the airport's land i think.
Played it once, fun WINDY and quick. You need 1 driver and 1 putter. It has the land to be a looong course, but no many trees. I will play it agian next time drivin down 35.

Funny thread to be asking!
Ricks Darts & Games on Westheimer has a good selection.
Academy sports stores also have discs.
Discgolfstore.com is based in the Houston area.

And you haven't played Temple yet, have you, Steve?

No Temple yet. That begs the question which is the faster route from DFW to San Saba? I-20 to US 281 then south? Or I-35 to Temple then west?

I take I-35 to Waco; US-6 to US-84 to Goldwaite
SR-16 toward San Saba to right on FM-500.

That would be Goldthwaite. Don't need anybody getting lost looking for Goldwaite, TX. :) :D

Don't forget the Creek 127 cut-across off of SR-16 so that you don't have to go all the way south to FM-500. That shortcut should save about 20 minutes coming from Goldthwaite.

P.S. Bring large bolt cutters.

I had given that turn-out some consideration last time through. Is it gated somewhere ?

The story goes that we tried it on our first trip to the ranch. After making it quite a way on the "road" which crossed and/or drove in a small creek bed, we came to a 20-foot high steel bar fence that was securely locked. We wondered what they were keeping out. Or in. Area 51? Velociraptors? Rednecks?
That was 3 years ago and we're still POd about it. Looking at the maps and satellite photos, I'm starting to question if we missed the turn to the north somehow. If you have a lot of spare time and a 4x4, give it a shot and let us know what you find.

Most likely a high dollar deer lease. I have heard about some real fences in that area to keep livestock in.

We call them velocirappers around here.
As for the best route, I prefer 67.
377 if you're in Fort Worth. That gets you a Schlotzsky's and a Starbuck's along the way.
