I was given last year's Worlds and NT DVDs and I love them. However, I a couple of modifications for this years would be great.

First, it would be nice to be given distances on the holes covered. I use these DVDs as a guide to training and those distances give some perspective.

Second, better quality DVDs would be greatly appreciated. The quality of the DVDs used last year is bad at best. After only 4 months they are cracking and falling apart around the spindle (?) hole. I have patched them with super glue but have not had the same problem with other DVDs and CDs that I own.

Nov 04 2004, 01:42 PM
yea, my dvds from last year also cracked around the spindle and I've only watched them 2-3 times each.

Nov 07 2004, 08:53 PM
I was going to buy them this week. Do you think you just got bad DVD's, or they are all really that poorly made. Do you think I should get video tapes instead? Has everyone had this problem?

Lyle O Ross
Nov 07 2004, 09:52 PM
Tough Call BMaster.

I know that mine fragmented pretty badly around the spindle hole, and I mean badly - but they still play fine before and after I glued them! If you are comfortable with tape I might consider that. I am going to wait and see what the PDGA says about the DVD situation. My experience is always if they know they fix. I prefer DVD myself and even knowing the potential problem will buy the DVD and if it frags figure out a way to get it ripped to a new DVD.

BTW - The NT and Worlds DVD from last year has been one of the best disc golf experiences I've ever had. It's a blast watching the top players in the convenience of your own home!

Nov 08 2004, 10:45 PM
Thank you for taking the time to reply, Lyle. I was picking up some discs today and saw the DVD's and couldn't help myself so I went ahead a got one. I will treat it very gently and may back it up if it is showing signs of cracking. My friend introduced me to disc golf just two weeks ago, and I was instantly hooked. When I went and got me first discs I bought a copy of the 2000 US Championships and really enjoyed it so I am looking to get more tapes, or preferrably DVD's to watch. Thanks again for your reply, I'm off to watch 2003!

And folks interested in having coverage of their Event included in Disc Golf Live can contact me. Fully edited segments are welcome, and I can also edit rough footage sent my way.

So if you have footage of your event on hand, or want to capture the action at an upcoming event, please get in touch with me..

I'd also like to hear from folks who want to see course reviews, player interviews, and community happenings covered on Disc Golf Live. Its easy to capture all the footage necessary and send it my way.

Finally, folks who want copies of the show for broadcast on their local community access / public access TV station should contact me about their free copy.

Wow! I just watched the three hour Worlds DVD and relived the memories! What a super great DVD!! Blair Paulsen and the Alacrity Crew did a great job filming, and John Houck and Brian Sullivan have such fun, lively commentary! And the background music was happening!

The second hour and an half DVD consists entirely of coverage of the Open Pro and Open Women division and the awards ceremony. Everyone from all the divisions who who received a singles trophy is shown with theirs. There are lots of hugs and handshaking!!! Those Open Men and Women sure can throw! Its cool how their drives are analyzed and we get to see them in slow motion.

Then the first hour and a half DVD has coverage of the final nines of ALL the rest of the divisions, many interviews with players, scenes shot of the Good Times Party, Field Events, Doubles, Players Meeting, Flymart, the Iowa Feeds the World(s) event, and PDGA Awards Banquet. Then there are lots of still photo shots of many, many players drives and putts that are interspersed throughout the entire DVD.

The coolest thing of the video that I liked was watching ALL the different divisions play, especially all the Junior and Senior divisions. They were amazing and inspiring! Watching everyone having so much fun playing with such skill just proves again that disc golf is a lifetime sport to be enjoyed by everyone.

Another thing I liked was our Iowa corn fields and how they were looking really good and tall! And there were scenes from our beloved Iowa State Fair even the famous butter cow.

John Duesler and the Allentown crew and Dan and Sue Ginnelly and the Arizona crew are working really hard to make 2005 PDGA Worlds the best ever too. If you missed 2004 Worlds, I encourage you to go in 2005 and experience the PDGA Championships and the camaraderie at these great venues.

We had a dream to share our courses with the disc golf family. We are so glad we worked hard on our bid submission to the PDGA BOD to host the event and were awarded it, so we could share our courses and community with everyone who came! Thanks again to everyone for coming to Iowa! See you on the links!

There are definately differences in the quality of DVDs you buy.

Most of us in the biz avoid memorex. Sorry.

That said. most DVDs, like most american products (excluding disc golf) are not very well made. They say CDs & DVD are less prone to scratch and failure than other media, but it's simply not true.

Unfortunately, tape is even less rleiable in the long run, so you're kind of stuck with what we've got ....DVDs.

I would recomend that the producer not use the cheepest DVDs they can find, but also is not feel responsible for how well they last, provided they work.

The end user on the other hand if possible should try to dupilcate such media (for their own use) if it's important at all, before they even use it, and take extra care as DVDs & CDs are fragile things.

Jan 18 2005, 02:31 PM
watched the DVD last night, when are the cameras going to learn how to follow schwebe's thumbers?
All in all I thought the video was well done, I guess my hesitance comes from the fact that nothing could recreate that week, so if you weren't there its great to see the holes and all the footage. I do have one question though. why, if they made it a two dvd set, did they leave out so much stuff. I know they didn't fill up all 10 or so gigs they had to work with.
Would have been nice to see kalstrom bombing discs in the distance( it was perfect left to right tail wind) or some mini golf. nice work to those involved, can't wait for the usdgc now.

I just watched the 2004 PDGA Disc Golf World Championships DVD from Des Moines over the weekend.

In general, I was quite pleased. The production is of top notch quality and the coverage is exhaustive. I have a recommendation and suggestion for future Worlds videos however.

While the DMACC temp course was a great venue for showcasing the final nine of each division, the coverage eventually grew quite repetitive. While these holes were quite picturesque (I especially liked the par four that required a drive over the water, and then a 90 degree turn right. I also liked the signature hole, the finishing par four along the water) it grew tedious watching every division play the same holes over and over again. While I'm not suggesting that we eliminate this coverage, I'd like to also see footage of golfers playing the other courses. There were eleven courses played during this event, and there are only sporadic shots of these other courses! Most of the competitors in Worlds 2004 raved over the quality of these courses; some claimed they were the best they've ever played. And yet, all I really got a feel for was DMACC, one temp course with mostly wide open holes and water hazards, which I understand was not typical of the other courses contested during the week. In short, I'm suggesting more footage from the different courses and the most scenic holes shot during the week's play but not necessarily less coverage of the finals, because I know that is important to many.

My $.02 -Jeff

Where do I state anywhere in my above text that I "know so much about it?" Where do I state anywhere that I am an expert on video production? How in the world do you make these assumptions?

That's a very strange interpretation of what I wrote, MTL. All I was trying to say was that I liked the video but would like to see more of the courses and the best holes in next year's production.

Since you're the communications major and a video expert, why don't you enlighten us all and explain what jump cuts and flash frames are.

And in the future, remember what happens when you a-s-s-u-m-e. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

MTL21676
Apr 19 2005, 12:47 AM
And obviously you assumed I was being serious....

Anyway, there are jump cuts and flash frames...

Jump Cut - editing techinque - when something magically "jumps" from one part of the screen to another or disappears / appears. Ex. - a scene is shown with a guy drinking a cup of coffee. He goes through his lines and nails the first part, but messes up the second part. He changes hands with his coffee, and re - reads the second part of the script. In editing, they take the first take and the second take - so when the video is shown, the coffee cup "jumps" from his right hand to his left hand without the viewer seeing him do it.

There is a jump cut in the am week summary.

Flash Frame - in editing, black video is layed under the video. Basically, something called time code must be inserted onto video so that it can be edited, this can be achieved by simply going to a black screen and recording it onto your tape, then editing your video over it.

So if the video is not put together properly, the black shows up. Ex - a scene goes from 00:00:00 to 00:10:00. The second scene should start directly at 00:10:01, but is put together incorrectly, and starts at 00:11:00. Thereefore the portion inbetween the two scenes is purely black video being shown. Since this is less than a second, the black appears to flash, hence the term flash frame.

A flash frame occurs right after Boobs throws a shot on 10 at Grandview in the am wrap up....it's very obivious if you are looking for it....

Thanks for the explanations. I'll look for those flaws in the video.

FYI, according to BDH's post, (http://www.pdga.com/msgboard/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=337655&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1) a different company (Media Active Inc.) will be handling this year's video.

The lack of pizazz in Worlds videos has to do with the premise for their production. The PDGA is a victim of its membership in the sense that if you show the Open Final 9, you have to show the Final 9s of every other division for fairness. So, the Worlds videos will never be much more than documentaries with not that much broad appeal beyond the attendees. So, I wouldn't hold out much hope for a new company to do much better if they're handcuffed by the same expectation to "show every division play the Final 9" tradition.

To get a more exciting video, a producer might have to finance it themselves and get permission to film it from the PDGA. Then, you might see a video with much more variety and coverage of the overall event. I can't see this happening because I'm not sure the economics are there for the producer. Likewise, the PDGA might not give permission in the first place since they don't make money on their documentary version. Sanctioning a competing version would just generate more red ink on the project. Not sure there's a solution unless members would openly agree that only the Final 9s of the Open Men & Women be shown so more coverage could be provided for happenings during the week. Do you see that happening?

Apr 20 2005, 08:05 PM
I would think that there would be a demand for a traditional DVD with a half hour highlights section that showcased great shots or stories coming from the event. There should be room for both on one DVD. The latter would make for better promotional material in general than the former.

It needs a little color commentary geared toward those new to discgolf, or even be setup with separate audio tracks, one with uptempo music and little commentary, the other with detailed commentary and explanations of shot choices and strategies.

Disc golf video........an opinion.......

The Market Street video, has been the BEST I have ever seen! They had all holes, skins rounds, ladies, best shots (hundreds of them), 3 rounds of coverage keeping you updated on many groups, not just the final-four! I am not even coming close to including all that that production offered, it was outstanding. How can a B-Tier put out such a wonderful product, yet our Worlds coverage has always been lacking...IOWA????...what courses, weekly happenings...how can you actually miss covering a hole, or two, when all you are doing is covering 9 HOLES????? 2004 Worlds video leads a non-disc golfer to believe that ALL 800-900 players played those 9-holes over and over.

The National Tour video I thought was very well put together. I personally would love to see many more of these role out of disc golf video.

Do not get me wrong, I will purchase any disc golf videos...I LOVE them. We are not there yet with quality, or the perfect system, but I do believe the creators are headed the right direction, and I wish the best, and huge success for them all.

Good luck...Brandon

Again, I'm not suggesting that we eliminate the coverage of all divisions playing the final nine, I'd just like to also see footage of the other courses. All these videos need to go to the next level are some shots from the different courses; how about a section with the most scenic holes at the four courses and a section with the best shots captured on film that week, for example.

The kind of quality and video content people want can't be produced economically if you were actually paying the people fair market wages to do it. The market still isn't big enough. The PDGA loses money doing the Worlds videos the way they do them but it's seen as a member benefit and promotional piece. The Marshall Street DVD was produced with a large amount of volunteer videography, music and editing. Even though Steve might be getting some of the profits off of sales (?), I can't imagine it will come close to the time and effort he expended.
