Just interested in putting out a plug for my good friend, and great disc golfer, Michael Johansen, who is in desperate need of sponsorship. As you all probably know, Mike played into the USDGC on the Monday qualifier, and proceeded to play his way onto the lead card for the final two rounds. He has now proven he is playing on the same level of some high caliber disc golf pro's, all of whom have sponsorship. Come to think of it, there were many pro's with sponsorship that did not play as well as Mike.
Michael is also willing to cut his hair, shave consistently, and promises to use deoderant on a daily basis is someone is willing to let him throw their discs. He in return will do his best to go to more events, and beat the best golfers in the world.
At this time, Sugarbuzz, Joy4lly, and TNT are his only sponsors. Who wants some of this.

Wow. I figured being in Charlotte that he would be getting something from ZD or Disclanding already. Is it just that he's not traveling much anymore?
BTW congrats Mike, way to shoot at the DGC.

If i recall correctly, Paul Mitchell was looking to sponsor people with pretty hair, Gillette is always in need of hairy faces, and SpeedStick is lookin for a few "ripe" men. :D
In all seriousness.....it was great to see a Monday qualifier perform so well. Congrats MJ!

Well, DL said that he doesn't meet their qualifications, although I'm sure that viewpoint may have changed by now. It has been a joke w/ Mike for a while now that Gillette is making the new Mach IV Johansen. Guaranteed to work, even if you only shave once a month! I think Ching should pick him up, as he is the only pro I know who throws a MOJO (renamed the MOJOJO). Still, nobody has given him official sponsorship. Heck, I believe Mike would even be willing to go to work for that big disc company in Rock Hill if they would sponsor him.

I bet that finish at the DGC meets a lot of sponsors qualifications.

Don't forget the round he had at Hornets Nest recently, where he shot a 41, and beat a former world champion by 10 strokes. Sure it was a casual round, but his finish the next weekend at the FF validated he can play with the big boys.
The fall finale thread (page 16) explains why DL hasn't picked him up.
What is an ambassador to the sport, in the opinion of a disc golf company? Mike has always gone out of his way to instruct new golfers, gives them discs, plays casually with anyone and everyone, promotes the sport to anyone he meets, and gives pointers and advice to anyone who wants it. (Mike: Now is when you put aside some of those 10X rocs for me. ;))

Did anyone else happen to notice that Mike was throwing putters and rocs when the rest of the guys on his card this weekend were throwing drivers! :o

Oct 19 2004, 02:55 PM
Big surprise there. I've seen him throw aviars farther than most humans can throw a driver when he's come to Cedarock.
All in all Michael Jo is a stand up guy..One of the most down to earth disc golfers i know...A major company should be so lucky to have MJ represent them..and after the USDGC he has proven himself more than capable of beating the BIG DAWGS!!!!!!Leave the hair and grow the beard and always remain true.....
http://www.usdgc.com/albums/sunday/acc.jpg
I suspect that, given MJ's finishes at the FF and USDGC, he will surpass the mythical 1000 rating that, to date, has prevented him from receiving sponsorship consideration from DL and Innova. Certainly, he comports himself well on and off the course, and would be an outstanding ambassador for whomever sponsors him.

Thanks once again for bringing this to the attention of the masses bored. As I've stated before numerous times, I'd be willing to discuss these things at anytime with anyone in a private matter rather than an open forum.
First off congratulations to Michael on a strong showing the past week both at the Fall Finale and the USDGC. His strong finishes clearly show that his hard work is paying off and the future holds great things for him. Consistantly playing at a higher level will bring the attention of the big companies.
As for Disclanding we are currently unable to sponsor Michael. The team is already in the process of potentialy adding 2 new members, Brian Schweberger (Bob West award winner for sportsmanship) and Mandi Snodgrass (2004 Female rookie of the year).
This is nothing against Michael. We have always had a good relationship with him. The fact is the team was formed years ago before he turned pro and it was after alot of debate that we decided to hopefully expand the ranks with Brian and Mandi. That currently gives us 8 team members. More than enough considering we don't have the sponsorship budget of an Innova or Discraft. And I'll repeat that sponsorship from us isn't what you think it is. 1 Innova Champion Team member gets more in a year than our entire team.
You might want to consider becoming a manager for him and solicit sponsorship. Something we do for our Team members.
Once again congratulations to Michael on a good week of Disc Golf. Keep up the hard work and good things will come to you.

Sorry if i offended you Rick, but was simply being honest to a posed question. Bottom line is Mike deserves sponsorship, and I will proudly help him in however manner I can. As far as representing him, I believe I am doing what any good friend would do, and am in the process of contacting the "big" companies to see what kind of posibilities there are for him. Perhaps assistance from you, such as writing letters of recommendation to corporate officials of the "big" companies, or talking with them personally is what you could do for him, maintaining the good relationship you have with him.
I also want to thank those of you who sent me PM's on how to get in touch with the big dogs, and how to piece together a portfolio of sorts to get him noticed. All of the advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
Rick: Have you got the discs in yet that JB and I won during doubles this summer?

In the past, our sponsorship conversatons have been fairly short. A name is mentioned and I usually comment on the player's likelyhood to give up their main discs, usually aviars or rocs. I hardly feel as though I have any pull, just an opinion. And since I am currently playing sub-900 rated golf, my opinion mean as much as this post.

Did you finish in the top ten at the USDGC throwing challengers that far? Mike did.
What does Mike have to do to get a sponsor 1000+ player rating, top ten finish in the USDGC, should have been top 5 if he wouldn't have gone double OB on #17..I would have to say he was 1 of the most exciting players to watch this past week-end. He deserves a major sponsor (Harold) sum 1 hook the man up....He is due!!!!! http://www.usdgc.com/albums/sunday/abi.jpg

He does throw Innova plastic more so than anything else. Being a local, it makes sense for Innova to pick him up. Could be the start of a long history of winning tournaments and representing our local disc company. He is young to boot, so again, many more years of great representation!
