What are some discs put out by other companies, that are similar to Innova's Shark? Nothing against Innova at all, I have several of their discs, I just want to branch out and try something different. I do have two Discrafts, an Elite X and Elite Z XS, which I like, but as a beginner I think I've been too enamoured by the thought (and aesthetics) of long drives. I kind of want to get away from obsessing over distance (I never broke 225 anyway), and get more focused on basics, like control, different angles of release, technique, etc. I'm looking for a more versatile, stable mid-range, with tons of glide, ala the Shark. I like the Shark, and if it is truly the best option, great, I just thought I'd try to expand my disc variety by trying out something by Gateway, DGA, Discraft, or others.

thanks.

Btw, the real eye opener for me was when I walked through a course just watching people play, and saw this guy perfectly pinpoint his approach with a high anhyzer/s-curve. What a beautiful shot that was! I hadn't even known it was possible.

Stick with the shark as a beginner. It gets the job done. You can use it for all your shots, but as you develop accuracy, try some drivers and putters. You'll notice that most putters will stick in the chains better than the shark will. As you see yourself pulling shots right (for RHBH), move up to a different mid-range, such as a spider or wasp.

I think you should skip the Spider all together. Thats just my personal opinion. A good in between disc is the Leopard or a JLS they work well as drivers and long upshots. The Discraft Buzz is another fine midrange similar to a Shark. Another good inbetween disc is the Panther.

Yeah A lighter Buzzz can be easily turned for a good anhyzyer. I really like Wasps as well.

You could always go with a ye ole' Roc. Those will do anything.

I've heard a DGA Squall has tons of glide but I have yet to throw one.

If you want a disc that is similar to the shark, get a Discraft Elite X Comet. If you want a shark with more distance, get a Discraft Elite X Storm.

But, like others have said, the Shark should be fine. I started on a shark, and most people I know started on sharks.

This is how I throw all my approaches from about 150' in. The Wizard is my weapon of choice for this shot.

Large beaded Avair all the way baby! Depending on the plastic (gummy/stiffer) you can use those to get up to 150' easy. Take a look at Innova and Discrafts sites. They both have charts on the four factors used to measure discs, speed, glide, turn, fade. Once you get to understand the difference in the numbers and believe in the numbers your choice of what disc to use for what becomes much clearer.

Practice, practice, practice!

I've been using an XD to practice this shot on, and I'm amazed at how easily I can get it to go where I want it to go, with very little effort.

So it sounds like the Shark is the way to go; everyone else started on a shark, I may as well (re)start on a shark. I think I'll eventually have to check out the Comet too; it sounds like it has unreal glide (discgolfreview give it a 10!), with very little fade. I might have to grab one out of curiosity.

It's so tempting to just keep buying discs, but realistically (due to physical limitations) I can only practice seriously once, maybe twice, a week , I would practice for less time more often, but once I get out to the field I have real difficulty making myself stop.

The NEW Element By Gateway is similiar to a shark.
A great mid-range disc for straight and subtle turns either left or right.
It can be used for Turnovers fairly easy at medium speeds and the glide and speed are a little better.
The S plastic is similiar to 8X roc material and the E is EXTREMELY durable.

I totally agree. Also, as you eventually find your way back to drivers, the Sabre (Gateway) is a good transition from midranges.

I would have to agree with Dave and Chris... once the Element comes out I won't need any disc in my bag that isn't gateway. (Although, I may keep an Xtreme in for a normal winged hyzer disc for when I want to go left NOW.) I also use an S curve approach with wizards and I am getting fairly accurate from 150 in... I have gotten to the point that I am almost certain up and down from 100 in and even drop in a few. If the Wizard isn't enough disc for you (although some guys pump it out there past my driver) then wait for the Element... I am just waiting for the "for sale" sign to be posted for it so I can by 3 or 4.

The Hawk by Discraft is almost identical to a Shark. It has the same weird lip in the underside of the nose. It is also available in a few different plastic types.

The hawk was my first midranger and I still use it on occasion, but its so beat up that it isn't as controllable as it used to be. Still want the Element... drool... :)

This sounds interesting, I haven't thrown anything by Gateway yet. I don't see any info on it anywhere on the Element on the Gateway Discs site, or anywhere else for that matter. When will it be available?
