Was just wondering if anyone uses a golf bag different from the standard "team" bag or "pro" bag or whatever.
I wear an Alpine Lowe hipbag, which has space for about 12 discs in it. The side pockets carry bug spray, spare scorecards, towel, etc. There are also two cup holders built in. I really like this design compared to the traditional bag because i dont have to set down or pick up a bag before or after a throw. Having my hands free to just walk the course is very comfortable.
Was just curious if anyone has found anything creative that works well
apologies if there is already a thread on this...
I picked up a really cheap, collapsable cooler. I bought it because of the price, then I realized that it can hold 12 discs, a bottle, and a towel with room to spare.

I started out with the same/ or a similar Lowe fanny pack. Works great. Still use for courses that only require a handfull of discs. It is builltmuch better than anything its equivilance by a disc golf compnay with the exception of the small Reveloution bags.

Im going to tell you right now if you want a bag to last you just about FOREVER your going to want to go out and get a REVOLUTION bag. I use the Carolina Team bag by them and it has 2 huge pockets on the outside ends that can fit just about anythig you could ever want. The putter pocket on the front has a zipper pocket in front of that. The middle where the discs are held is made out of 1600 Cordura and the outside pockets are 1200 Cordura (or however you spell it)
it has 2 more small open top pockest on the outside of the big pockets. I put my birdie bag in one and a couple minis in the other. It has 2 water bottle holders that are big enough to fit the Naglene water bottles. It has to layers of truck vinyl on the bottom so it will almost NEVER wear a down and water doesnt seep threw the bottom of the disc compartment. I can fit 20 Discs in the bag 18 in the main compartment and 2 in the putter pocket. I only car 9 in the main compartment with 2 big towels and 2 in the putter pocket. You can fit everything in this bag and it will last a LONG LONG TIME. My buddy bought his Revolution Team bag used and has had it for over 2 years and its still in good condition.
Id say if your going to get a new bag go Revolution no matter what size you get from them you will be a very happy golfer. I know i am :D

^^^what he said.
also, if you are looking for a cheaper alternative, go by academy and check out the soft sided coolers. i have seen some pretty fancy coolers that have tons of room, water-resistant lining, and insulated to boot. durability? dunno.
revo = :)
I suggest using what you already have. i.e. old diaper bag, camera bag, army surplus bag, duffle bag, carry on, etc. Any plastic disc will hold up to setting down in some sort of bag before you throw. You just don't need to spend that much on a bag. With that said, I carry a Gateway tour bag, so I must be a hypocrite! :D:D
Even so, I carried my old camera bag for a long time, and it worked fine. I just kept seeing everyone else carrying the really cool bags, and I broke down. I do have a friend that carries his discs in an old diaper bag, and imho, it is very cool. :D:D
i've been using a Lightning bag for about 2 years now that started falling apart the day after i bought it .... now I just use it for tournaments when I need to carry more discs. but for everyday play I use a bag I got a garage sale for FREE; I don't know what they call these style of bags, but it's one of those single strap things where the strap goes over your head and across your body .. its great, it holds 6 or 8 discs, has a small zipper pouch on the front and a mesh pouch on the side that fits a water bottle perfect. I've actually seen someone else with this exact same bag.

Lightning Bag=
REVOLUTION BAG= ;) ;) ;) /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif :D :D :D :D:D:DThen you look at everyone elses bag and go :p :p :p :p
I have a 2.5 year old lightning bag and it's still in new condition. I play 3-4 times a week and I throw my bag, drag it on the ground, and try to destroy it, but it hasn't even ripped!
I don't know what kind of sandpaper you guys put on your teepads, but I have never had an issue with Lightning's durrability. I've had 2 lightning bags, the pro and the small one.
I bought my Lightning bag for $15 2.5 years ago. Now for a Revolution setup, you're going to pay about $150, shipped. So let's say I go to my bag tomorrow and it's ripped to shreds. In that case, it would take almost 25 years for the Revolution bag to start paying for itself.
The Revolution bag is a very high quality product. More than that, its a status symbol. I can find alot of places to spend $150 and a disc golf bag is on the bottom of the list.
Back on topic:
I used to use an Arm Surplus backpack. These things are made out of heavy duty canvas and they are extremely durrable. They hold about 10 discs.
I also had a Goodwill backpack. $2.50 makes for a nice disc golf bag!
I also have used a soft cooler in the past. They are really nice because they are totally waterproof and very sturdy.

I payed $115 total for their Top of the line bag right now. Carolina Team Bag. The best one they make cost me $115. I payed about $75 with shipping for my Innova Tour bag. It lasted me about 6 months so if my Revolution bag lasts me a year then it has already been a way better deal then buying 2 Innova Tour bags. I have been told though that the Rev bag will not only last 1 but prolly about 5 years so $115 is a pretty good deal for an AWESOME looking and REALLY DURABLE bag for 5 years. If i stuck with the Innova Tour bag i would have to buy 10 bags to make it 5 years so that would total $750 dollars to the $115 i spent for the Rev bag.
I say buy Revolution even if its is $115 because you will end up spending that on multiple bags from the other companies before your Revolution even looks like it has been used.
Every time i go to get a disc or whatever out of my bag i look at it and im like "MAN THIS BAG IS FREAKIN AWESOME"
I will never carry another bag. Im a Revolution customer for life and darn happy about it :D
PS I play about 15 rounds a week when its not snowing out here. I also played 35 tournaments this year. I didnt buy the Rev bag till Worlds but this time next year ill let you all know how great it still is :D
somehow this thread got hijacked into a "my revolution bag is God's gift" thread...
I'm not downing those bags and maybe I should have been more specific but I used the title "alternate" to refer to bags OTHER than the typical golf bag...
personally i dont care how long those high priced bags last, cause I'll NEVER buy one...
(BTW, I have used a team Innova bag and I hated having to set it down all the time, plus i hate all that weight on one shoulder... and yes, i tried a buddy's quad shocks and really didnt love them too much either)
my big thing was having hands free to balance and move around on the course...

oh ok sorry about that. I thought by "alternate" you meant something other then the bag you are using right now.
In that case i have seen an Emty 6 pack box used at a disc bag. I have seen plastic bags. regular back packs. A duffle bag. My buddy has this mesh looking bag that he used to use. It was like a round tube and the discs fit perfectly in the bottom of the bag. Only trouble was they had to stack on top of eachother so it was hard to get to the disc you wanted unless it was on top. I have seen the cooler thing done before also.
Sorry about the Revolution comment but every time someone mentions disc golf bags thats all i can think of

"i have seen an Emty 6 pack box used at a disc bag"
i have a buddy that used to only use old 12pack beer boxes...he would have a different one every week...shiner bock, dos equis, redhook, you name it. pretty funny.
for my first few months i just used a "platypus" backpack (like a camelback, with a 1L water bag inside of it). it held up to 6 discs fine, but i got sick of having to slide them in and out of it when it was full of water...not much room.
...different from, and whatever... http://home.earthlink.net/~trisim/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/frisbie-packdog_by_slo.jpg

that is definitely the sweetest bag ever! :) i would use my dog to do that, but all he would do is run after the disc(s) and i've have to chase him down before i could throw... now if you had a camel, you could ride in between throws as well.....
I saw a few cooler-on-a-dolly setups the other week. That seemed to work really well.

We've got a guy in the Cincy/N.Ky area that uses a fishnet to carry his discs - thus his name is Fishnet Dave! Works out real well for him.

The 2 coolest non-standard bags I've seen were:
1) Someone took an old pair of jeans and used the denim to sew up a 10-12 disc bag with shoulder straps. It seemed very durable and the jean pockets doubled as storage (minis, etc.).
2) A soft cooler with a built in folding seat as the lid (seat top was fabric, legs were aluminum). This + straps seemed to work really well...
I want to know why it looks like he has just thrown in that picture, but still has a disc in his hands. That must be one major bad case of grip lock!! WATCH OUT FIDO!!
...maybe it was a pre-warm-up? I don't recall much more than that was one large dog...there's a different, much higher res. shot on the "3rd photo site", 'current El Dorado' page [scroll 1/2 way down, click to enlarge], through below link.

I used the camo bag that Academy sells for a while (held like 15 discs), and casuals always thought it was a cool idea...I just didn't like the way it held them; the discs weren't in there straight, and the pockets, although numerous, just weren't functional. I then got the lightning bag, because for the storage space it was cheap. I liked it until I saw the PDGA bag. Why are there not more people giving props to this bag? It's $50-60, and the material is very thick, plenty of space (I can carry up to 18), FUNCTIONAL pockets galore, and TWO drink holders. Living in TX, that's a must.
I drew a sketch of what I felt would be a cool (or at least interesting) bag that is based on one of those breifcases with the wheels and telescoping handle...but it would have a hard shell (with fabric surrounding), and a top that could be used as a seat (it would flap to the side so you could get discs out). All this and an extra 3 inches of space on the bottom for drinks (insulated, of course), which could easily hold six b....waters. Basically you have two options--wheel it like a pull cart, or carry it on your back with shoulder straps. Obviously this would be expensive due to the highly durable, yet lightweight materials needed. But it would be suh-weeeet. Maybe at least someone will make the hard shell-soft exterior with a seat on top. That's all I really want.
Sorry to drift...for a cheap bag that'll do the trick, get that camo bag from Academy ($10-15).
there's a ten dollar fly fishing chair with bag and strap that works admirably. Saw it in action at the disclanding fall finale! Preety sweet. Available at walmart. I prefer my cart, personally.

... I moved into the "Lightning" big-ol'-bag back in 1999 before going to Am Worlds in Kansas City ... first-introduced , they retailed for like $49 ... later , they price-dropped to $39 retail ... I wanted all the individual slots for discs and the mega room for everything else ...
.
this same bag is still going strong ... no rips or tears ... I just refresh the waterproofing with some 3M Scotchgard spray once a year ... I did replace the original shoulder strap (not very padded) with a different one with a big ol' cushy pad on it when I moved my discs in ...
.
bottom line : a very functional , long-lasting bag ... especially for the price ... :)
I recently picked up an Army surplus gas mask bag the other day, attached a shoulder strap, threw an Aviar, a Roc, and a Valk in it, and threw it in my trunk. Now I have my three favorite discs ready for a round at any time without having my larger disc bag taking up my whole trunk. The bag could maybe hold 7 discs, and the whole set up cost me $5. Made from heavy duty canvas, cheap, and easy. Found the strap from an old bag I was going to throw away. I did have to sew it on, but that only took about ten minutes Who cares if it looks funny. It is a nice little set up for what I needed it for.
