I lost a Gazelle today, one of my favorite discs. It was a 150g DX. If I tell you what I liked and disliked about it, will you advise me on its replacement?

I'm a little guy, 130#, 5'8", small hands, not particularly strong, throwing RHBH. So far, I've preferred small diameter Innova DX discs, 150-class for midranges and drivers. I can throw 300-350 consistently with a 150-class DX Teebird or Firebird on a flat, open hole, and can turn over a beat Teebird every time, but can't usually turn over a new one.

I used the Gazelle when a Teebird is too long, and the 150-class DX Classic Roc is too short. The Classic Roc also requires more height. The course I usually play (Sedgley Woods in Philadelphia, PA) is tight, short, and wooded; the Gazelle was my driver off the tee for all of the longer or uphill holes (2, 5, 7, 11, 16, 18), some of which have low ceilings and narrow fairways. Teebird on 9, Classic Roc on the rest.

What I didn't like about it was the heavy fade at the end. I don't get that from any of my other discs. I liked that it flew low, fast, far, and straight before tailing left.

I'm looking for a disc that feels like and flies like a new DX Teebird, but not so far, or like the Gazelle without the fade. That is, something that doesn't need a lot of height or room side to side, something fairly fast with good glide, small diameter, not too deep, and available in 150 class or up to, say, 160g.

I'm wondering about the Leopard? Cheetah? Panther? Another Gazelle, but throw it differently, or in different plastic or weight? Something from a different manufacturer?

Your advise is most welcome!

Mark, if you're looking for a disc to replace your Gazelle "right out of the box"...I guess I would recommend a DX Spider, though it may be deeper-rimmed than you desire. A DX Gremlin might work, but I have no experience with them.
Since you liked your Gazelle so much you might want to get 3 or 4 of them to begin breaking them all in so you'll have ready to go replacements for the future!
I was always more partial to Cheetahs over Gazelles...got my first ace with a 171 DX Cheetah in '97!!
Good luck!

i have heard great things about gremlins, but ive never thrown one.

sounds to me for the types of shots you liked your gazelle for that you might like a cheetah. fast disc, loves low flight, doesnt require a lot of side to side and has very little fade. in fact, they turn into great turnover discs with time. I used to throw cheetahs before i started beating them up TOO quickly (a function of the DX plastic more than the disc itself) and i always loved them.

I've never thrown one, but you may want to try a Millennium Polaris LS. It won't hold up as well in the wind as your Gazelle did, though, and the plastic will be a bit different than DX.

The Cheetah seems to be a little more understable Gazelle, but with similar fade and the Leopard is a more understable Cheetah with less fade. Those might be good discs to try, too.

I heard the Gremlin was discontinuted, even in DX plastic, but as others have pointed out that might be a good disc to try. Personally, I find that the DX Gremlins get kind of squirley on me after a bit of wear, but that could be just me. I really like the Proline Gremlins, but those are harder to come by and fade quite a bit more.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. The Gremlin definitely sounds interesting... I see that it isn't on the PDGA approved disc list, which I use as a handy reference for dimensions; does that mean anything?

A quick search at my favorite vendors doesn't turn up any Gremlins, but I'll look around. In the meantime, someone found my Gazelle and called me, so I have some time to borrow some discs from friends and try before I buy; I'm pretty sure there are some Leopards and Panthers in my group's bags. In the future, I'll be sure to have a backup for all of my favorites; I didn't realize how big a hole I had in my bag without the Gazelle!

If you have to replace a Gazelle, I can only really recomend one disc. THE GAZELLE! If you're looking for that great glide and speed, get a Gazelle. If your looking for that nice stability, get a Gazelle. You're probably lucky you lost your Gazelle so you can finally upgrade to a Gazelle!!

I throw roughly about as far as you do and I'd recommend a Leopard or Cheetah (dx) in weights around 150-160.
I never threw a Gremlin, but it is an 'all-purpose' disc so I don't think it will fly quite as far as your Gazelle or the discs mentioned, as they are all drivers. Won't feel anything like a Gazelle, either.
Then again, why not just get a gazelle? :D

Try the LS as stated above but in a higher weight or as you said try the Leopard. The LS and Leopard are in my eyes about the same disc. They both will flip over fairly easily if thrown flat and strait, but add a smidge of hyser and ,even beat up , they are very controllable.Personally,I like both of these over a dx Gremlin. If you want and cant find a DX Gremlin then look for a Ching Sniper. They are older but go for 8-10$ on Ebay, and are the same disc.

I think a DX Gremlin is Exactly what you are looking for. I've never thrown a 150 class but my 175 flies Very similar to a Gazelle and also has the small diameter. And the slow speed fade of the disc should be exactly what you are looking for, somewhat similar to the fade of a Roc or Aviar. Good luck!
