for lack of anything better to call this disc, i think i'll call it the "buzzard"...since it reminded me of a cross between a buzzz and a leopard...

the disc seemed like a slightly less overstable buzzz, with alot more glide. about the same speedwise...

on first impression i like it alot...it will probably replace the breeze for downwind and turnover midrange shots for me, although i want to try the new disc out on longer holes than the acerace holes...

bottom line...i like it more than the breeze, and it has potential to be a perfect compliment to the wasp and buzzz..

anyone care to add their thoughts? i'm going to go experiment with mine some more today...

I liked it quite a bit as well. It held a line like nobody's business in the air. I was having some trouble throwing nose up at the tourney (I was trying to juice it too much as I couldn't reach quite a few of the holes), so I need to throw it more comfortably to see what it really does in my hands.

Well my thoughts on this disc is that it reminds me more of a cross between a panther and a roc...

You cant really put too much on it or its fairly understable. I had the luxury of playing with this disc in 20mph winds... headwind = crap, tailwind= alright.

I think the general opinion from about 45 people at the ace race we had up here was that it was useless to most. Some people liked it (mostly those that aced with it). It would never make my bag if it even gets pdga approved or even put into production

One last thing I noticed was that for the most part whenever it was thrown (watching others throw it as well) the nose always came up midway through the flight, even when i tried to get it going nose down, the nose would come up.
*One man's opinion*

On second thought I have very very picky so there is a possibility that they really are not that bad but perhaps I was just unwilling to give them a chance :)

I've noticed that Discraft likes to make discs in sets of 3 based off of the same mold (such as XL, Xs, X2 - Pred, Talon, Wildcat or the newer Crush, Flash and ?Flick?) , so It is probably based off of the Wasp. Probably will be called the Stinger or somthing bug related if it gets into production. ;)

The reviews that i received from the players at the Arlington, Tx. Ace Race were very good overall.

I liked the disc, and it's flight characteristics. It kind of reminded me of the old Discraft Cruiser, with a little bit of Innova Aero, and some Millennium Aurora MS in it :D. This thing loves to fly!!! I threw it just as well into headwinds as i did with tailwinds.

I think that Discraft has done a wonderful job creating a disc that is beginner friendly yet useful to the seasoned professional.

Always remember: It's the Indian not the Arrow.

Really? I throw a wasp and it's kinda chancy into the wind....humm I might wanna keep my heads up for this thing.

And good advice!

I agree with Brunner. Not good into the wind or with a cross wind. With a tail wind it did ok. But it was just one day of throwing it. I already sold both of mine. :) But the ace race was a lot of fun. No aces in my group though :(

Ooh, I love this disc, will have to throw it more to see if it can go in the bag, but to me it flies close enough to a Z-Comet that I'm going to have to give it serious full-time consideration (if it became legal).

Was there another prototype disc given out or did they give out two of the same disc?

I was thinking about picking up a Buzz this week until I was told about the local Ace Race. If I can get two prototype discs similar to a Buzz I might hold off.

Not even close to a buzz

what mark said. buzzz way more stable. '04proto nice feel, different edge, great glide... flies real true when thrown slow with lots of spin, but can also take a faster throw. its between the breeze and the buzzz, but closer to the breeze. i still say it flies like a modern version of the shark.

Sep 11 2004, 11:05 PM
I threw this disc today, and it was one of the best discs I've ever thrown.

Sep 12 2004, 01:01 AM
How does this disc compare to an XD or CR?

Ok, I thought this disc was a real big surprise for me. I like this disc better than a buzz. Although I diddn't ace anything with it, I think its gonna go in my bag. For now anyways. My bro and Matt The Kid were both on my card and both nailed an ace on seperate holes but both had about the same line on the disc. Just a slight hyzer seemed to work the best.

I thought the ace race was an awesome event. there was just one thing I diddn't understand. Why was the winner given 10 of the prototype disc? The person that won it at Moffit in Houston only had one ace and 3 metal hits. There were also only about 4 other people that even had an ace. I really don't see why those 10 discs couldn't have been split up and each person who aced a hole could have got one of those discs. That seems the most fair to me. First place already got a bag, hat, and shirt. And the others that got aces went home with nothing. I mean it is an ACE race isn't it? And its not like there were hundreds of aces. Just seemed a little skewed to me. Whats a person gonna do with 10 of the exact same discs anyways. Had I won them, those with Aces would have got their own.

The ace race discs for the 9/15 event at Grapevine, TX have arrived.

All of the discs are a beautiful blue for Bear Creek's event!

Thanks for switching it up a little Discraft!

BTW, the ace race at The Vet we had Orange and Yellow to choose from.

The Waterloo Disc Golf Club in Austin, TX has some of the Discraft Ace Race packages available for sale. The package, including 2 of the Ace Race prototype mid-range discs, an Ace Race cap, sticker and bag tag, will be $25 (includes packaging and shipping) for anyone outside of Texas. Unfortunately, Texans will need to pay an extra $1.65 for sales tax.

All of the remaining discs 174 and 175g and orange. If you're interested send me a PM or email at texas_me@hotmail.com .

Hello Everyone,

I'm glad to hear all the good response the prototype has been getting. For those of you who did ace, the TD will let me know how many "I Aced at..." discs they need and we supply those at the end of the event. There will always be a prize for those who hit an ace, just not as large as the grand prize.

Yo yo yo, at first I thought this disc had no place in my quiver, but... I took it to CA with me this past weekend and it was SWEET! :D

I'm surprised nobody has compared it to a slightly smaller version of an XL!!! Same dome, same profile, little slower, but just as true!

At the ace race I couldn't figure out what disc it would replace, but now I know...
I think it makes a great DRIVING undstable mid-range disc. In places where I don't want to torque my D-wasp or other mid-range, this new disc flies and glides far almost like a driver.

My only con was that I didn't find it conducive to touchy upshots. And that I can't use it in tournaments yet!

When will it be legal?
What's it's name?
I think Discraft should go old school and name it: MRL, Mr. L, or Merl (instead of MRX & MRV, but similar to XL) :D

Great description BBD! In fact, when i filled out the ace race survey, i mentioned it being "like" an XL. I also recommended it be named "The Cane", due to the exciting hurricane season it debuted in. :D

Hello,

The Glide has been approved for PDGA tournament play. You can now use your One Disc Ace Race prototype in PDGA events. There are more Ace Races being added to the October calendar so no telling when these will go into mass production.

I'm really starting to dig this disc. I needed a flippy mid-range in my bag and recently put this back in. This disc has amazing glide; in the absence of wind and thrown with a little hyzer, it will flatten and hold a straight-to-slight turnover route for seemingly forever. This disc will outdistance virtually any other mid-range disc, it's almost like a cross between a mid-range and a driver. It's like the 2-iron of disc golf. After banging chains in the ace race, and making a couple of sweet shots out on the course, this disc is a keeper.
