Hello all,
My first post here. I have recently moved into an apartment complex in Apex, NC which has it's own frisbee golf course! The thing is that it's in a bit of disarray. My guess is that it was installed several years ago then not kept in shape. It's a great little course with 18 disc-catchers, outdoor and indoor holes. I feel inclined/obligated to fix up the course as it seems to be such a waste to let it get worse. My question is I am wondering if anyone has had experience with fixing a course up and if they might have any advice for me. The course is in Apex, NC and is located at Avalon Peaks apartment complex. My guess is that you would catagorize it as a semi-private course. Anyone played this one?
Thanks

Indoor holes?
Oh sorry, thats what I call holes that are in thick deep woods as opposed to in an open field...

I pictured the scene from "Caddyshack" where Chevy Chase played through Bill Murray's apartment.
Judge Smails : Ty, what did you shoot today?
Ty Webb : Oh, Judge, I don't keep score.
Judge Smails : Then how do you measure yourself with other golfers?
Ty Webb : By height.
LOL!
"Uhhh, mind if I play thru?"

I have actually played it.
Peidmont Doubles did doubles there for 2 or 3 years. The course was designed by Jim Markov I think.
I remember it being a pretty cool little course - the only bad thing was the long walk after the first few holes
Yea it is a great little course, one of the main reasons I decided to move in!
But it could use a little tlc...
Played Buckhorn today... What a great course! Hard!
Harris Lake ate one of my dics. :(

Actually it was designed by Carlton Howard and the course was orginally designed differently. They then changed the building layout of the apartments and caused the course to not be as challenging. I am pretty sure this is what I heard from Carlton. There have been many disc golfers that have lived at Avalon Peaks and tried to clean up the course and it seems once they leave the course becomes overgrown.
You might check with the office there to see if they would be willing to mow the grass every so often. I know they have done this in the past from time to time so perhaps if they know somebody wants to use the course they would keep the course mowed for you.
My best bro lived by #4 tee and built some steps up to the course so we could walk right on. He moved from there a year ago, but we used to go out and work on it from time to time. Only problem was.. the city (or landscape contractor) never mowed around there, and often times #s 1 thru 11 were often too overgrown to enjoy. We told the management that we were avid disc golfers and would help with the upkeep, but nothing ever came of it. Still waist-high grass every time. As a matter of fact, when he moved, he filled out an "evaluation" of the community and it's management, and in the "extra comments" section, he made sure they knew that he moved there in large part because of the course, and felt it was not well maintained. Of course he had let the management company know several times that we had worked to improve the quality of the course, but I guess it fell on deaf ears. It is/was sweet course, and I remember many fun days working on it and playing it. I think my best was a 45.
#4 is my favorite on the front 9. (the one where you shoot the gap onto a landing by the pond, right?) I look out at the 5th hole from my porch. So far the grass has not been a problem... I might have moved in during that once a year mow. It is sounding like they have moved it around a little from the original. Has it historically been laid out like this?: Holes 1-5 are along an underground gas pipeline. 6-13 are located under some huge powerlines in an open field (although many of the holes are located next to the woods (hello poison ivy!) so it can be challenging. My favorite holes are heavily wooded, 14-18, and the ones that need the most work. It's odd that they would invest all that money in the baskets, use it as an amenity feature (which worked on me!), only to let it deteriorate. Especially when tenets are willing to lend a hand. I will have to give the management another shot.
OH, meant to ask if you guys know of a good shop for buying disc supplies in my area. Thanks!
Absolutely give them another chance. It is good to know that someone is still enjoying it on a regular basis and keeping it in the mangements' mind as a viable attraction to potential residents.
As far as the set up (yeah #4 is super sweet), it was the same from the time I played it, but my bro and I did have to move a couple tee pads, as the cinder blocks were missing/destroyed. We tried not to change anything more than a few yards from it's original place, but on a couple holes, we didn't even know where the original tee had been, so we improvised and created a couple sweet tee markers in cool spots. Hey, are the "dug in steps" as you walk off of #4s tee and toward the basket still there? We busted our humps shoveling "stairs" into that red clay. I imagine they may have washed away, as we weren't funded to put in railroad ties or frame it properly.
As far as disc golf stuff, Play It Again Sports right up the highway from you (in one those Cary malls) always had a good selection of discs and a even a couple bags. Give them a shout.
So you are the ones responsible for the questionable hole distances! j/k One of the first things I'd like to do is replace those markers and get the proper distances measured out, shouldn't be too expensive, I'd be happy if I could get the management to pay for that.
Something tells me you had alot to do with the cool tee placement on #13, one of my favorites btw. Unfortunately the 'steps' seem to have succomb to the Carolina rains because they are no longer there. :(
Thanks for the heads up on Play It Again Sports, figures that was the one sports shop I did not stop into up there at Crossroads! Dooh! :p

Yeah, I feel certain that questionable distances are in part my fault. We just kinda improvised many times because that was our only option to make the course play well. That would be awesome to have it properly measured and remarked. I would be glad to come out and give you a hand sometime.
I can't exactly remember #13, but I know we did some nice work back in the wooded part as well, so it is likely that we had something going there. If that was one of my innovations, I'm glad you like it.
It's really cool to have someone back at "The Peak" who gives a darn about that course. We'll definitely have to throw a round or two out there sometime, and like I said, I'll be happy to come help you with any improvements.
Yeah, Play It Again Sports is a pretty reliable spot for DG stuff. Every store I have walked into around the triangle has had at least a smattering of discs, and the one in Raleigh at Pleasant Valley has a large section devoted to disc golf.
Check ya soon, bro.
Cool! I'd love to throw a round or two with you. It'd be nice to get some insight into the stuff you have done with the course and also to discuss some of the things I'd like to do for it.
I think just getting new tee markers would be a big help, and to remeasure those distances would be easy too. A couple painted cinder slabs should do the trick.
I have been doing some simple pruning and clearing to date and that has already helped create a better feel for the course. They cut the grass again last week so that has also helped a ton. Still need a machete and a weed wacker to find some of my lost discs!! lol

How 'bout they get Marsh Creek in first before starting something else.

Well supposedly the only thing keeping Marsh Creek from going in is lack of manpower and time.
I think I remember Kirk or Neil saying that parks and rec had given us the money to go ahead and start installing.
Plus they can get the ball rolling in Cary, then next year or 2 years, Cary can put disc golf course in the budget.

From what I recall from RADL meetings we have had several meetings with the City of Raleigh on Marsh Creek. They are working to finalize course design and other parts before giving us the go ahead to install the course.
Cary contacted RADL/Carlton about putting a course in Cary. The state games will be held in Cary next year and they do not have a Disc Golf course.
Orginally they had 8 acres set aside for the course and each hole was about 50-110 feet. Carlton is working with them to try to access some other land so that there will be some longer holes on this course.
Cary parks does not know of any disc golfers that live in cary so this is why a course is not present there. If you live in cary you pay cary taxes so please go to RADL.biz and send us an email letting us know your address so we can approach cary. Unfortunately if you do not live in cary they do not care because they do not get your tax money.
Either way we have a high potential for 2 new courses in the Raleigh Area.

That's sort of self-fulfilling. If Cary Parks doesn't ask, it won't ever know, and it can claim we don't exist.
At least, I do. I'll visit radl.biz and send you that email. (pause) Okay, done. Carlton should have it!
