Aug 14 2004, 02:12 AM
well, I know a lot of people who would say the Roc is a great mid-range, and I'd have to agree :). I also like the hydra, it just floats when you let go, and flies very straight, also it has a rubbery feel to it which I like.

Learn to throw a Roc! It is the benchmark of discs, what basically everything is compared to. The thing is, you have to throw properly to get a good flight out of the Roc, so it makes you a better player. And once you have proper technique, you'll find that you can do anything with Rocs.

Aug 14 2004, 02:37 AM
what kind of roc should i use and what is a good weight i havent really thrown a light weight disc what is the difarence

If you're new to the game, try some light discs. 150-160.
The difference? You'll be able to do more with the disc sooner
and they'll go farther. :)

well ive been playing for a yearso im kind of good at it

Oops! Then you prolly know about light discs awreaddy.
I know several experienced players that finally tried 150g discs. Buncha them added 50 feet to their distance. :D

DX. I personally like my Rocs heavy, in the 177-180 range. I won't throw one at all if it's lower than 170, but there are people who do.

Try a Wasp, basically a Roc with added bonuses...

Aug 15 2004, 03:04 AM
I throw a Buzz (which is a beadless Roc/Wasp) and I can control it like no other. I also use my Wizard a lot too. Depending on the ceiling I can throw my Wizard about 300 and my Buzz about 400. The fewer discs you have the better. I personally find Rocs good for coasters and selling for outrageous amounts of money on eBay.

Play entire rounds with just your midrange and your putter. You have to know what you can and can't do with your discs.

The Buzzz is finicky, a roc is not. I have a 171 gram 2001 CE Roc and a 176 glo san marino roc in the bag. The 2001 CE for longer shots that stay low, the San Marino for a predictable shot thrown higher. I have also been using my 166 champion stingray for turnover type midrange shots and actually the sting ray has been taking a lot of my other roc shots too depending on conditions and my mood.

Since everyone is ignoring you, I will tell you. If you want a ROC, get DX and get something that weighs at least 170g. They are very reliable discs.

I switched from ROC's to the Element. The S Element would be a great disc for you to try.

Z Wasp for Hyzers
Z BUZZZ for Straight shots
D BUZZZ for flips and turns

All brand new out of the box :D

No seasoning required like with the ROC

KC Rocs 177+
I use DX in snow because I haven't found a colored KC yet.

Or try the Shark I know alot of players who like the shark more, espically becuase you can get it in Champion and Pro Plastics for normal prices, and some people don't like the bead on the rim of the Roc.

I think the trick for midrange is to find one disc you like and carry a bunch of them in different beatness's and plastics: it makes for great consistancy. If not atleast get discs with similar shapes.

Cheers,
Matt

I've been loving the new Discraft disc they debuted at the Ace Race tourneys (I've heard it called The Glide???) I've been throwing this as my only midrange recently...it holds a line amazingly well, and it seems to always land within 10 feet of my target. A very nice feeling to have :)

Oct 27 2004, 02:18 AM
I like that Ace Race disc too -- for me it seems like a much longer Comet and it comes in Z plastic which is a bonus. Does anyone else find the Glide to be like a Comet only with quite a bit more distance?

Oct 27 2004, 04:02 AM
I use my aviar for a lot of approach shots. A classic roc for 100-200' and a roc or a cyclone for 200-300'. I would like to try a wizard 'cuz they appear to be very similar to the classic roc, but I haven't gotten my hands on one yet.

esalazar, you got a pm

I love the Ace Race (Glide) from this year as my backup midrange to my Buzzz. The Glide flies a lot straighter for me in the 177 weight than in the lighter 172. The 177 has been the most easily controllable turnover disc that I've used and has added a lot of confidence for me on any right-bending holes. I think it would make a great beginner disc as well.

Oct 27 2004, 02:08 PM
Beat up Buzz; GREAT for fast long turn-overs, or slow spike anhyzers
New Buzz; Does anything you want it to do.
Super Roc; slightly stable
KC Roc; Straight; fast turnover/s-shots
Wasp; OVERSTABLE and headwind shots
All I throw are the max weights

All these are good for me anywhere from 250-350ft.

I agree, the Ace race disc (glide) is great out of the box, but if you hit a few trees or baskets with them and it is flippy city. The one I used for the Ace Race started to turn over before the 36 holes were done.

Oct 27 2004, 03:05 PM
use either a roc, element, buzz, or wasp they are all basically the same disc.

Photon glow Wasps are pretty darn close to a ching or KC roc. They beat up nice and slow :D

I love the glide, but not as a true midrange. It makes a great anhyzer driver! After the ace race was over our host held a distance contest with it. The big arm guys were throwing it 430 on nice sweeping annies. I put mine out 380 on a big hyzer flip.

I've thrown a lot of different mid ranges, and the best one I found is a 180g Flat top Roc. Loves tail winds, headwinds, crosswinds. I do whatever with that disc. Up to 350ft. After that it goes to the drivers.:)

I used to throw rocs many years ago. I got away from them thinking that the technology moves on and improves. And I would beat the hell out of them in no time flat. First throw in some cases. Ive tried spiders, buzzs, wasps and the like. Nothing but nothing compares to a roc. Needless to say, they are back in my bag again.

As far as when I throw them:

Anything under 325' that requires a very specific line or approach to the basket. Subsequently I have a few of them in various stages of decay. I will not throw them into a headwind on most cases, at least right now. They flip over way to easy into a headwind for my likeing. Of course I may not be hyzered down enough to compensate for such, but Im back to learning them again.

I know the Pimp will not like this but, Im trying to weed out the Discraft in my bag. Fortunately for him and Discraft, the Challenger has become my goto putter. :p

"I know the Pimp will not like this but, Im trying to weed out the Discraft in my bag."

I have been torn between Innova and Discraft. On a recent weekend trip to a couple of courses I noted the discs in my bag for the type of overall courses I was going to play.

Putters; 3 aviars and a S.Puppy
Midrange; 2 Buzzz's, MRV, Wasp
Drivers; 2 leopards, 2 Teebirds, Valk, Orc, Beast, Whippet, Firebird.

I throw what I like and what works best.

For me, Discraft makes more consistent midranges that are a tad more overstable then Innovas, I still like rocs, but they all soon turn into turnover discs. And I love the Flex I get out of Innovas drivers.

And I just have a thing about white dx small bead aviars, it is the only putter I use.

Gotta put in a word for the DGA Squall. For me, at least, the Squall flies longer and straighter than any other midrange. On top of that, the plastic is both grippy and durable.
