A friend of mine is going to Colorado the first week of August and is wondering what courses he should make sure he gets. He really wants to try one of the mountain courses. He will be in the Vail area. Where should he go?

What's up Dixon? First week of August? I might be in Colorado. I've played one park next to some soccer fields in Colorado Springs. It was worth playing. Westminster Park in Northern Denver is pretty open from what I could tell. I would definitely take the time to drive over to Frisco which is much closer to Vail and play that course. It is a sweet course. Honestly, I'd stay right in Frisco to play from my limited experience. Dagon Owen is in Denver and his brother Eric Knight is a bar manager? in Frisco. Sorry, no #'s but if I'm headed that way next week I'll have them and give you a call.

My husband and I played a course in Leadville a few years back. It was pretty good. They were just getting signs put in back then. I would expect it to be complete by now! I'm not too good with Colorado mountain geography, so I don't know how close Leadville is to Vail.

There are 5 really nice 18 hole courses around the Vail area. Listing them in order of distance from Vail:

Beaver Creek (15 min) - mentioned above

Copper Mountain (about 20 min) new 18-hole course build in 2001. Really nice, goes up and down ski slopes in the summer. Very hilly, bring hiking shoes. But one of my favorite, very different than anywhere I have played. I heard they made some additions this summer, but havent been there myself to see.

Eagle (about 25 min) really nice, typical course

Frisco (about 35-40 min) really nice. Lots of trees and set next to Frisco lake in the town park. By far the most crowded in the Summit County/Vail area.

Leadville (about 45-50 min) set in pine trees by the CC college, another pretty unique course. First 9 lost of trees, second 9 somewhat open long holes.

Denver had 3 nice courses spread out throughout the city, and Boulder and Colorado Springs have a few each as well.

When I lived in Summit county we used to do a triple header of Frisco/Copper/Leadville which are all pretty close in respect to each other, and pretty different in terms of length and difficulty.

Hope it helps

oh yeah, and if you are a skater, there is a free skate park at the parking lot at Vail as well. Just take it easy cuz it is easy for a Texan to overheat and get sick up in dem dare mountains
