the TD of this event told me to go ahead and start a thread, so i imagine he'll be posting relevant info soon. in the mean time, i'll do a gratuitous post to bring this thread to Page 1 and try to pump you guys for some info. does anybody familiar with Maple Hill or Pyramids have any tips to offer? wind, elevation, overall feel, etc? the pics on the site are good, but they're all winter pics and i'm sure the courses look and play much differently in the summer.

I was told Maple Hills was awesome by a golfer from Connecticut. I tend to play better the first time I see a course. I guess there are no expectations of >> I birdied that in practice and I should get it in the tourney. DENTAL PLAN, Lisa needs braces, DENTAL PLAN, Lisa needs braces!

July 18th pics of Maple Hill have replaced the old Soviet style winter photos that we had of the course (thanks for pointing this out!) The short course SSA is 51.4. Even with very heavy woods and sloped greens, a course would need to exceed 10,000 feet of length to reach an SSA of 70.

While Mitch was exaggerating, his point is well taken that Maple Hills is a world-class disc golf facility. The long course record is 61, held by Jason Southwick. This tournament and course is not to be missed.

Not only was Mitch exagerating, he didn't even say it out loud. His shots spoke loud enough. I can't wait to see what happens when there is a $1000 skin on the line!

Agreed though, this is going to be quite a spectacle - and should not be missed.

I'd like to cordially invite all of you to the first Marshall Street Disc Golf Championship, a USDGC Qualifier and PDGA B Tier. This is a first for us in several respects. It's the first time we've used two courses simultaneously, with the pros and ams competing on the same courses, but separately. It's the first time we've held our big tournament during the summer. It's the first time we've used a brand new tool in preparing our tees: it's called a level, though I'm not sure of the spelling. So for those of you who attended last year's unofficial Ice Bowl, Dam Pyramids IV, expect better footing on the teepads.

I'd also like to extend a specail invitation to the women out there. We've earmarked $1000 for the Women's half of Friday Skins. The top four PDGA player rated women (and the top four PDGA men) automatically qualify. So far two women have signed up for the tournament, so I'm thinking this is an opportunity for a couple more women to vie for the cash.

There's also poolball -- real poolballs racing down a treacherous track, people betting on their balls of choice, and proceeds going to local charities. There's also a lot of screaming and laughing.

Here is another thing that happens when you let beer (and Gil - who follows beer) on the course - more workday pics: It was 9:00 AM and Gil asked me to get him a cold one, after rooting around in the cooler and finding two empties (at 9 AM!), I finally found a full one to get him. Played my second round at Maple Hill this week. I feel I owe it to my old tourney buddies from down south that still travel to say- this is one of the best courses I've ever played!

Reminds me of a cross between Renaissance and Laurel Springs. No really, it's THAT good.

Oh, and it just happens to be DIRECTLY across the street from Pyramids, one of the most fun, diverse, yet still challenging courses in New England.

played random doubles tonight in Raleigh with a guy originally from Mass. i asked him what he knew about Leicester and he had no idea what i was talking about. apparently, i was misprounounciating it.

finally, i spelled it out for him and he said, "Lester?".

Tell me if this makes sense? We're going to take $10,000 and divide it by the total number of Pro players in all the Pro divisions, then allot to each person in each division the same amount. So if we wind up with 60 pros, each will take $166 into his/her division. A Pro Open division of 40, in this scenario, would represent 2/3 of $10,000, or $6,667. We'll use the PDGA Pro Payout table and assume 40 Pro Open players in a total pro field of 60:

I've played maple hill a number of times now- it kicks [*****] as much as the [*****] that it kicks.
On the PIN PLACEMENTS -
There are two pins from each tee- both are permanent. One set has Red flags on 4'+ poles from the top of the basket, the others are with yellow flags. If you can't see the yellow ones it's because they are so freakin' far away... There is EXCELLENT sign postage at each tee pad with distance for both pins. Though your discs might get lost, you won't be.
Enjoy this place- it's great and rivals anything in NC (where I used to play before moving).

Yes- bring bug spray, but you may not need it... and if you forget to bring your southern hospitatlity, don't worry, there's plenty of it up here!

At the risk of re-starting the "protection" debate, why would you expect added money in the Masters division? It's a protected division. All added money should go to the male and female Open divisions.

First to the finish:
Brinster down by one on Russell going into hole 17 and Brinster uncorks a huge anheizer that takes him to within 25 feet of the basket (with a Roc by the way).
Russell follows with a great drive himself but finds his disc a little long a bit into the scrub by the silver basket about 35 feet from the pin.
Russell just misses the birdie opp but Brinster makes good and ties it going to 18!

On 18, Brinster throws a huge drive to within 30 feet left (?) of the entrance to the green (I couldn't tell exactly from where I was at the tee but that was what it looked like to me).
Russell then steps up to the tee after losing the lead and throws a drive that kept fading and fading and goes O.B. a good 225-250 feet from the pin.
At that point, it looked like it may have been over but Russell throws an unbelievable anheyser that curled its way all the way to the basket and parked!
Brinster steps to his drive which had him with a good angle to the basket and about 70 feet (?) to go.
His upshot unbelievably got away from him to the right a bit, clipped the stone wall I think, and just stayed just in bounds at the opening to the green by about a foot or so.
Perhaps a bit flustered, Brinster was looking at a long but makeable putt (25-30 feet)to win the tournament and unfortunately misses!
All tied and into overtime!

Hole 1 to the short pin, an intimidating hole in any situation, nonetheless to start a playoff on.
Russell steps up first and drives toward the pin. During its flight you could see Russell wishing it to get legs, and as if the disc could hear, it responds by landing at the base of the pin and skips to leave him with a 15 foot park job.
Brinster then steps up maybe knowing that he needs to come close to matching that and drives.
The disc began to fade during its flight toward the basket, looked like it was going to come back a bit but ran out of real estate and settled just past the end of the access road a good 35-40 (?) feet right and long of the basket.
Brinster makes a tremendous bid at the hole but just misses and Russell wins in the first hole of the playoff to capture the tournment ... WOW!

To cap it all of and most importantly, it was amazing to listen to tourning pro after tourning pro during the awards ceremony come up and express there thanks and their appreciation to what the all said and I quote, "The Best Tournament They Have EVER Played In!".

Congrats to Steve, Jason, Lick, Kelly, and all the volunteers who helped run this amazing event.

Absoulutely loved this tourney!!! My first b-tier and I'll remember it well. Showed up two holes late today costing me 8 strokes and the difference between 6th and 12th in Advanced. Well I learned my lesson the hard way.

man, I'm so bummed I missed it. Sounds like a good time was had by all. :D

Pretty sure Hysell made it. He had a darn large grin on his face when he picked up his winnings and when asked if he was going (to USDGC) replied "Oh yeah!"

This tournament was AMAZING....I'm sure everyone will be hearing that countless times from all the players that were there.

This tournament and the USDGC easily stand above any disc golf tournament I've been a part of...

i can't give enough credit to Jason, Steve, all the volunteers, sponsors and players who made this tournament so awesome. plenty of ice cold bottled energy water, on-site food ordering, sweet color scorecards with distances and par for each pin placement, tee signs with the same info, smooth fly pads spiked into the ground (with brooms handy!) on top of level crush-n-run, spotters everywhere...i could go on and on.

Maple Hill and Pyramids are now 2 of my favourite courses. "NC - Home of the Wooded Courses" my *****. even the open holes up here are wooded!! with Christmas trees!!

if any of the NC boys are checking this thread, you need to ask Walt what he thought of this tournament. his opinion carries more weight than mine and i'm confident he's got some pretty high praises for it. way to represent, Walt.

i didn't exactly "bring it" like i wanted to, but i had a wonderful time nonetheless. New England Disc Golf is real. the MSDGC is real.

What a sweet tournament. Courses immaculate, hospitality unparallelled. Infinite thanx to Steve, Jason, LickMe, Kelly, Misty, & everyone else that made this the best disc golf tournament in the world. I can't wait to author the DVD.

Mark, everything was wonderful! Hat's off to Jason, Steve and everyone else involved with this event. The courses were great, the food was awesome, the money was unbelievable, but their hospitality was untouchable.
I will try my best to get back there next year. Everyone should try and make this event.

yeah, Gary represented, too. 4th place is very respectable. plus, he's an experienced traveller which made our trek up and back painless.

i learned a lot about my game this past weekend. playing unfamiliar, tough courses like the ones in Leicester will put your game to the test...a test which i failed miserably. but travelling all the way up there and failing was the most fun i've had in long time.

Fall Finale - no. Sneeky Pete - yes.

It was really really REALLY fun hosting. I can't wait till next year. Steve handed me an envelope this morning, after driving his brother to the airport at 4 a.m. On it he had written a list of what to change and add at next year's MSDGC. That boy's insane.

Hey wit? Are you going to Hickory? I went to the Georgia State Champs and got heat exaustion. Hope hickory is cooler. Who's going to the sneeky from Charlotte? Ant said that his house is open for floor space again.

Big props to GLU and WALT. Way to represent and come home with some cash. Makes the drive worth it. Hope you told those boys up there to come on down and compete in the Carolina's. Good Job!!!

i just wanted to take a minute to thank Jason, Steve, Kelley, Misty, Tom, LickMe, and all the rest of the staff of the MSDGC for a truly spectacular tournament! y'all are a WICKED GREAT bunch of people!

i wish there were words to describe the total respect and appreciation i have for what the southwicks & crew are doing up there in new england...this event is 2nd only to the USDGC in my book. the courses are phenomenal; i have never seen a better-designed course than Maple Hill(can't wait for some concrete pads there), and Pyramids is world-class as well. you have raised the bar high on what a tournament can be...keep us posted on the plans for the next MSDGC!

for the record, i did cash! i won $12 on an unsanctioned pool-ball race :)
