Congratulations Dave on a well written and published magazine! I showed it to some business partners who were amazed that disc golf had such a professional rag! Nice work!
This is AWESOME Dave! Nice job. This is what the sport needs. I like the bi-monthly approach as well. I love the DGWN, but with only 4 issues a year, it leaves me looking for more info. Good luck with this. Are you approaching any news stands as well with special subcription pricing?

I really liked Disc Golf Journal back in the day. Every issue had a feature article with pictures of a world-class disc golf course, with a special writeup of its signature hole.
Just talked with Dave to get my 1st issue, great guy, great ideas, can't wait to see it.

Were you the guy that Tom wrote about who gave him such a hard time and demanded he refund all the money? :D

no...i wasn't mad with tom at all........i spent several hours over a few phone calls back and forth with him talking about all sorts of things and our children and hoped that he would one day return to working on a magazine....he was(don't know if he still is)working with rothstein on dgwn for a few issues...i still have every issue that came out from the time i joined the pdga until he stopped publishing it.....
i keep all of the magazines(dgj, dgwn, cali mag,and the new one) put away so that one day the future world champion lorelei johnson #13697 will see her name in print in the different issues.....
by the way are you just trying to cause trouble jeff, i mean really, a 5 year suscription was only like 40 bucks....i waste at least that much on disc golf every week

i mean really, a 5 year suscription was only like 40 bucks....i waste at least that much on disc golf every week
And considering that many people received free subscriptions to DGJ as prizes won in tournaments, it made it all the more ridiculous when that guy demanded all his money refunded.
Keith, how are you doing? When did you move from Miami? I think it's great someone finally decided to start up another disc golf mag. There has to be another voice than the party line....I've always felt that way. And it's not that I don't like Rick or DGWN he does a great job. But the sport is getting big enough where there is ample room for two solid publications each of which serves a different purpose.
I wish Dave and his crew the best with Disc Golf Magazine. Anyone willing to take that chance gets my support. And Dave, if you're reading this feel free to email me. It would be nice if I could throw something useful your way.

hey tom...good to "hear" from you!!!
you must not remember our conversation when i said that i was moving out of miami before lorelei started school as i wasn't going to raise her in the congestion down there. so in april of 2001 we moved to tucson,az
gave up 22&1/2 years of seniority, being a working supervisor that could travel to disc golf events around the country and a shcitload of money(as well as dawn doing the same--21 years at her job) so that hopefully lorelei will get a better chance to experience the country and it's contours in geographic areas out west.
you know how it feels to give up something you were good at for family as it becomes more about their happiness than your own as they grow up
i'm very impressed by the first issue(it looks like the journal used to)
and as i said upthread,i'm SO glad that it is well done so that will give it a chance to be seen by alot of players and people in the disc golf community.
i hope they give you a call as i would like to see some of your insights and knowledge be used in the future.
take care...keith
Keith, I don't remember you telling me that you were moving. Then again, I don't remember what I had for dinner last night. Reagan's Alzheimer's didn't start until he was an old man. Hmmm....I just turned 40. Yikes!
Good to hear from you.

Chris, that one must have been in very limited circulation. I either forgot about it or never saw it.
BTW, I really liked the new disc reviews in DGJ. That guy would really tell it like it was. Too bad we don't have anyone doing that these days. Now all you hear is what the Mfg's tell you or what some "unbiased" players say online.

Just received my first issue of Disc Golf Magazine. I was awestruck by its appearance! I guess I was not expecting the oversized format. The 13" x 10" dimensions of the magazine allow larger and higher quality photographs to accompany each article. The larger font and crystal clear photos are a boon to my ever-decreasing eyesight and sure are appreciated!
I thoroughly enjoyed the articles, especially those on Brian Sullivan/PDGA Radio and of course, the 2005 Pro Worlds coming to my hometown of Allentown, PA. Again, I was dumbfounded by the number, size and quality of the many pictures in this issue. The full color photographs seemingly jump off the page and come to life!
I like the format of the magazine. The focus seems to be more on disc golf equipment and articles on technique, such as follow-through and putting, rather than primarily just tournament play. I realize of course that the very nature of the game of golf is competition and one of our most high profile aspects, and the NW Amateur Series sounds like something that is going to be quite successful in the future.
About the only thing I could ask for is MORE! I'm always excited to receive my Disc Golf World News magazine but disappointed when I digest the whole thing in one sitting. Even at 44 pages, Disc Golf Magazine is a pretty quick read. Also, many of the feature stories also double as department articles. For a magazine that only comes out once every two or three months, I'd like to see all the regular department articles plus a dozen or so feature stories. I'm not expecting something that is the size of my fiancee's bridal/wedding magazines, but a periodical that I can digest in a few sittings would go further in bridging the long passage of time between issues. I’ll bet that that in hardly no time at all, the popularity of this venue will skyrocket and contributions will flood in from all over, making for a bigger ‘zine.
Kudos to Dave Hendrickson and all his contributors/photographers for making an outstanding inaugural issue. I can’t wait for the next one!

Excellent Publication!
Like Keith, I recieved the mag in my players packet from the San Diego Open.
I loved it! The articles are well written and it definitely has a different "taste" to it than DGWN. I can't wait for the next issue, this is just one more link in the chain towards making our sport more and more legit.
Thanks Dave.
P.S. Because of this mag the NWAS will have two San Diego golfers on the roster for Progress later this month. We are registered and ready!

Disc Golf Magazine has a tough act to follow!
The August/September edition has set the bar even higher on how a professional disc golf magazine should look and read.
Yet even more high quality photographs can be found in this issue, including the gorgeous shots of the new Maple Hills course in New England.
The articles are outstanding as well. I especially liked the "Insiders Guide" to the 2004 Pro/Am Worlds in Des Moines, which described the wide range of other activities available while in town. I wish I had such an article last year in Arizona - you could fill a whole magazine with information on fun things to do around Flagstaff and Sedona!
I also enjoyed the article on the GDS Tour, with its Semi-Pro division restricted to those who have won less than $1000 on the PDGA tour in 2003. It's unfortunate that none of these events come near my part of the country, because the increased participation and low entry fee of $30 is right up my alley.
The referral of the Maple Hills Disc Golf Course in Leicester, MA as "Walnut Hills" in two spots is about the only thing I can find to complain about, and that's being nit-picky. :p And of course, at only 42 pages, I WANT MORE!!! :)
Once again, kudos to Dave Hendrickson and all his contributors/photographers for making an outstanding issue. I can't wait for the next one.
Might be a nice Mag wouldn't know ... I could never get anyone to answer email at the official email... by the way ... what is the official email maybe I'll give it another ... one off!!!
T
prolly is a good mag... graphically from what i've seen looks great... think it'lll knock off DG world news as the PDGA official RAG?? poll starts here:

I finally picked up a copy and I LOVED it! I read the entire thing in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. I am not a fan of the DGWN at all and I'm very happy to have a DG publication that can hold my interest. Way to go Dave!!!!!

The December/January issue is definitely the best one yet!
This issue is made by the feature articles on the Wisp Resort and Laurel Springs courses. The former features eye-popping photos of one of the few resort golf courses on the East Coast. Anybody who has played similar courses at Aspen and elsewhere in Colorado or the Snowbowl at Pro Worlds 2003 knows the joys of launching discs 500-1000 feet!
The latter article takes a walk down memory lane by reminiscing over the famed Boylan Fam course in Laurel Springs, NC. Sadly, my first year in disc golf was the year this course closed. But we've all heard the stories: for all intents and purposes, this was really the first world class disc golf course, with daunting length, severe elevation changes, and par four multi-shot holes. When pitch-n-putt courses were the norm, this course showed that disc golf could play similar to its ball golf cousin. Man I sure hope a disc golfer buys the property and restores this course, I'd really love to play it!
I like that the rest of the issue is devoted to equipment review (Dual Straps, the Ript card game, Gear Pages, etc.) and only touches briefly on the USDGC and tournament play. To be honest, while the sport of disc golf is based on scoring and competition, I think that Disc Golf World News already devotes enough pages to organized play. While the previous (October/November) issue of Disc Golf Magazine had an extensive feature on new PDGA Champion Birgitta Lagerholm and other articles which spotlight women in disc golf, (a demographic that needs more press) the rest of the issue seemed to be devoted mostly to tournament play.
Here's to future issues and continued success to Disc Golf Magazine!:) :D :D
