It's just about that time again!!

On July 10th and 11th,(yes 2004 :D) the ACE club will proudly host a PDGA B Tier event, as well as a NC Point Series event at Cedarock Park. This event will be a warm up for the A Tier event "Sneeky Pete" to be held in September. Come on out and support the cause.

To anyone who has not yet played at Cedarock Park, I would highly recommend you making the trip to do so. The park offers 2 courses in the same park. Each course has 2 sets of tees, while Cedarock also offers alt. pin placements.

Cedarock Course:
20 Holes, mostly open, with well established trees. Rolling hills of <font color="green"> lush green grass </font> . Well manicured, with groomed fairways.
Pro tees to Alt. pin positions measure around 7200ft.
Am pads to Alt. pin position measure around 6600ft.

Wellspring:
Accuracy oriented course, with lots of woods and hills. 2 OB creeks(may play casual), a lake and dual tees. Fairways clearly defined and walkways between holes are lined. Hole 17 has been considered to be on of the best holes in the state. Make the call for yourself.
Pro Tees measure around 4800ft.
Am Tees measure around 4400ft.

2003 Defending Open Women winner Mandi Snodgrass
2003 Defending Master winner Tim McNeill

I played the pair of courses for the first time ever over the Christmas holiday season and I was very glad I made the 1 1/2 hour drive south to check them out. I'll miss the Pro/Am I'm sad to say because of a family vacation at Myrtle Beach, but I have my sights set on playing the Sneeky Pete in September. Micheal's reference to hole 17 at Wellspring is right on the money, an awesome hole. Being a lowly am, I was thrilled to make a tap-in 3 on that one. I would bet that deuces on that one are few and far between, even for the pros.

May 18 2004, 01:18 PM
I only know of a few 2's recorded on this hole. I happen to be one of the lucky ones. It was a skip in 2 from about 250 out. 2 on this hole would be considered an eagle in my book. A 3 on this hole is excellent, and in most cases will gain 1 if not 2 strokes on the field. Nice 3 JP! Glad to hear you may join us for the SP. Buy a CFR from us!

Not as this time.

It may be a possibility for this event, I am waiting to hear from Bobby as to whether or not he wants to use this method of payment??
Please pre-register. It makes it a lot easier on the TD. There will be a penalty for sign ups on the day of the event.

i agree, thats why i suggest paypal. less paperwork, no worrying about the mail, immensely faster. if fees are an issue i have no problem paying $2 more.

May 18 2004, 02:04 PM
Agree Yahnni! 100%. It's not my call. I will leave it up to the TD to decide. One reason I posted this so early was to give players ample time to register, in the event snail mail is the only option. I am also pretty sure someone will be out at the park the Friday before to take registrations. Not sure what time or for how long? This should also help avoid a penalty for day of tournament registrations.

I will be out there.

Both courses are beautiful. Will the holes be in the short pin placement or long?

May 18 2004, 02:27 PM
My vote will be for the exact setup for Sneeky Pete.

I have no official word, but I have heard that it will be

Cedarock Pro pads- Alt. pin placements (2 rounds)
Wellspring Pro pads and Wellspring Original.(1 round each)

Everyone will play the SAME courses regardless of division.

I will post once I have official word from the ACE club.

Of course you can play either setup on the Wellspring course whenever. Cedarock will of course need to move the pins to the Alt. sleeves to play the long layout. I was out there late last week, and the pins are in the short. They usually change them every month.

The courses played in the Pro-Am will be different than Sneeky Pete. This is OFFICIAL! No pay pal for this event. Pre-REGISTER. Plenty of time left to do this. It will be an option for the Sneeky Pete. There will also be someone at the course the Friday before the Pro-Am. They will take registration between 4 and 7 on Friday. SO if you can send it snail mail, you have the option to meet someone out at the park. If you don't pre-register then a late fee will be imposed the day of the event( that is if they decide to even take it??)

OK so now the courses to be played:

Cedarock will be on the short pin placement

1 round from the Pro Pads to the short placement
1 round from the original tees to the short placement

Wellspring

1 round from the Pro pads
1 round from the Original Pads.

4 rounds, 4 different courses.

Sneeky Pete will be

Cedarock Long pin placement.

1 round from the Pro Pads
1 round from the original pads

Wellspring

1 round Pro Pads
1 round Original Pads

No plans to be in Raleighwood before the Pro-Am. However there is a small 1 day Gateway tournament this Saturday at Cedarock. Come on out and pay then. Should be a cool little one dayer for anyone that wants to come and play. 2 rounds, register at 9 or 9:30. 10 o'clock T time.

If you cant make it send it with someone that may come, otherwise snail mail it, or register on Friday before the event. Otherwise you may have to pay a penalty. All penalty fees will more than likely go to the SP purse.

Cool! PLay Open. You can win cash! Non-Sanctioned so you dont need to worry about accepting and being stuck in the Open Division for life. You can always play Adv. or Am, but since it's Gateway sponsored, I think most prizes for Adv. and AM will be in Gateway plastic. Which is cool if you like the plastic and throw it! Open division of course takes home dollars!

Hope to see some of you guys out there. Good warm up for the Pro-Am.

Everyone is playing the same tees as far as I know.

Cedarock was in the Alt pin position last week, so unless they moved it, expect that setup.

Watch for some changes in the Cross State Doubles this Fall.
We will be X - C Tier and may be changing courses used in an attempt to reduce driving times and motel bills.

John-

I think the ACE club was under the impression that the format was being changed? Due to cost and driving times we thought you were moving the cross-states to Asheville/Hickory? A course closer to Kingsport. Is this right/wrong?

Michael
The 18 Cross State Doubles will be in Burlington this year as usual.
I don't know when Asheville / Mars Hill will have courses to match those at Cedarock.
Nor do I know when we will be able to play all the new holes at Winged Deer, but look for Winged Deer to replace Fossil Hill at some point. That would mean a I - 26 doubles corridor and less than 100 miles.
We are looking at another doubles event between Fossil Hill & Blacksburg. Only about 150 miles between courses both along I - 81.

We would not move the event without talking to you guys first.

There has been some talk about getting the cost down & eliminate the extra night motel costs. When the event was initiated between Warrior's & Horizons, the short drive meant that you could stay at home & drive the 3 hours in the morning. The added distance to Cedarock certainly gave a much better course and allowed for more teams, but it also added a motel night. Then when we added Fossil Hill there was more driving.

Also lets thank Paul Dosher for his help with Lakefront Disc Golf Club events these last few years. He 'retired' over the Winter from those responsibilities.

j

Jun 30 2004, 01:29 PM
Thanks for the update John. Glad to hear the Crosstates are still gonna be played in Burlington. Now if we could only raise more money for that event! It would certianly help drum up some more intrest and hopefully get more Open teams to play. Cant ask for any better course to host the event on!

Jul 08 2004, 01:21 PM
Someone is supposed to be out on Friday taking pre-regs. I was told between 5-7. If your out there looking to register and dont see anyone, ask for Bobby Evans, Mike Grasse, or Rodney Gilmore. I know Bobby is the TD, but Mike and Rodney may be able to help you out.

The course is looking ooooh sooooo spectaculaur!!! Be sure to thank those club members that have been bustin' the hump to make it look nice for this event, as well as getting ready for SP in 2 months. Keep any negative comments to yourself.
The pins are in the short positions, and from the Pro pads it actually makes it a supa-sweet course. Personally my favorite setup.

If you plan on camping I would contact the park. The number is listed on this thread in a previous post. They have limited sites avail. so you want to be sure if it fills that they will still allow you to camp. In most cases it's not a big deal, just treat them nice and they will take care of you. I would also suggest that while sipping on your frosty beverage after a hot round that you either wrap it in a towel or use a cup. They are pretty cool about this, but they need to keep a handle on it, as there are others in the park using the facilities that may report it as a problem.

Be sure to drink plenty of fluids!! It's gonna be a BAKER :DI know TT is bringing' the HEAT!!

When is the gate opening at the park tomorrow? I think it is usually 8:00. Watson? Anyone?

Plankeye
Jul 09 2004, 11:10 PM
Last I heard(about 4 hours ago), the gates will still be opening up at 8. Bobby said he would try to get them to open it up earlier for Sneaky Pete.

The course is looking great. Bring plenty of fluids.

There are roughly 150 spots still open!

Jul 10 2004, 08:39 AM
Gates Open at 8:00.

Like cheat said, we will try to get them open by 7 or 7:30 for SP.

Weather looks great for golf! If you like it HOT, HOT, HOT...

GL to everyone!

a big thanks to Bobby Evans and everyone involved with running a smooth tournament in Burlington.

The courses looked the best I have ever seen them - it was the little things, like the tees being painted, that is what takes a course to the next level.

Good Shooting GTW, LBL, Snoop.

Way to go BO - takin home another one - I hear ya

Good shooting Yhanni - 4 solid rounds of golf man

Another congrats to Monica for winning, and to all the winners this weekend.

I'd like to thank those responsible for the work done on both courses! The pads looked great! Also thanks to those who ran the tourny including Bobby, Michael W., Mike G. and everyone else.
Congrats to Bobby for shooting scores that made me feel old. Congrats to GTW, who was exhausted after his comeback one-stroke win over LL. Congrats to everyone that took my loot, including Mike E. who shot a sizzling hot last round.

He was in tears at crosstown after thanking CHH for introducing him and teaching him the game.

The only complaint that I have about this weekend is that a lot of AMs, need to definately learn the rules and not get pissy when someone is trying to help them and let the know what the rules say.

I know I definately don't have fun out there when I have to pay attention to what other people are doing.

The only complaint that I have about this weekend is that a lot of AMs, need to definately learn the rules and not get pissy when someone is trying to help them and let the know what the rules say.

I agree that AMs not knowing the rules is a problem. (Probably wouldn't hurt for some pros to review the rules either, but that's another issue.) I've pulled aside AMs to explain a rule at just about every tournament I've been at this year prior to this past weekend (the exception being the Pro Crosstown). The only reason I didn't have to on Sat. was 'cuz I hung with the Pros. :D

None of the AMs I've spoken to about a rules issue have gotten pissy about it. (Of course, it probably helped that I wasn't playing, so they realized I wasn't trying to 'work" them.) I've also found it helpful to wait until after they've thrown and to preface my explanation with something like, "Just for future reference, you should know that ..." then show them the rule. That way, they realize they're going to "get away" with the rules infraction they just committed this time, but will know not to do whatever it was they did in the future. (I know, I know: "ignorance of the rules is no excuse"; but it may be an extenuating circumstance.)

Thanks to all who make this a smooth tourny! Nice shooting and TDing Bobby. Watson, Grasse, and the grounds crew did a great job working on the course. Vince, its a shame you had to run a mile before the last round, If I knew there was a 'second' shuffle of the cards, I would have known you were in my group. Had a blast, great tourny, great people. One of my favorites!

Thanks everyone for the kind words. There has been a lot of work put into the courses over the last few months, and it shows! Thanks to all that helped be a part of that.

Great show this weekend! Hot weather and hot golf! Well not mine, but I had a blast. Saturday my money maker just wasn't fallin like it could of. It happens. Sunday worked a little better, but I will be back.

Great Shootin Bobby!!! Incredible play all weekend long!! Karma was on your side this weekend bro!!

A big thanks to Zonedriven for there continued support, as well as Innova, and the Parks department for all the help they have been giving us lately.

A HUGE thanks to Mike Norris for posting scores for us! They were up each evening, and were posted well inside the PDGA guidelines for a B Tier event. Regardless of pink panties lack of patience. Pull em out of the crack and relax!

Hope to see everyone back at the Sneeky Pete in 2 months.

why was a 50 at wellspring in the afternoon rated the same as a 52 in the morning? i guess the trees shrunk in the afternoon heat, and the course played 2 strokes easier.

Bobby was other-worldly - mere Masters were not capable of competing against him this weekend. His score would have won the Open Division by two strokes. Over some pretty fair NC golfers named Greg Williams, Larry Leonard, Walter Haney and others.

But Hysell, outside of Bobby we had a very competitive group in Masters. 2nd through 5th were separated by just one stroke!

Bobby did this while TD'ing one of the best run t'ments in Burlington in quite a while.

Thanks to all! Especiallly Bobby, Mike Grasse, Michael Watson, Rodney Gilmore for the superb condition of the courses. Let's all get ready for the Sneaky Pete!

I predict a new record for largest turnout for a NC PDGA event at this year's Sneaky Pete.

Jul 12 2004, 12:29 PM
You were only gonna cool him off if a few of those forehands were thrown in the water. The splash your disc made may of cooled him off. But he would of thanked you as it was close to 100 degrees this weekend. It would of been refreshing for him. He would of said "thanks, I had a 2."

His game was untouchable this weekend. But I did miss yah if that makes your head any bigger.

Congrats to all of you..great shootin Yahnnie ,Cuttaz &amp; MTL...

And I must say GTW has one of the best attitudes of any disc golfer I have ever met... he goes there to play the sport and have fun no matter if he wins or loses.. I have never seen him w/ a bad attitude.. but then again I'm not around him like many of you are.. but for him to say great things about his wife ... ok. Just to chime in the Ratings do seem low at this time. I think Conrad has stated that these are just preliminary ratings and the official ratings will appear with the updates as they happen.

Just so everybody knows I uploaded the results and had it so 4 different courses were played.

<table border="1"><tr><td>Layout Code</td><td>Course name</td><td>Holes</td><td>Par
</td></tr><tr><td>A</td><td>Cedarrock Pro Pads/Short Pins</td><td>20</td><td>60
</td></tr><tr><td>B</td><td>Cedarrock Am Pads/Short Pins</td><td>20</td><td>60
</td></tr><tr><td>C</td><td>Wellspring Pro Pads</td><td>18</td><td>54
</td></tr><tr><td>D</td><td>Wellspring Am Pads</td><td>18</td><td>54</tr></td></table>

Then I have the following for the divisions and the courses played.

<table border="1"><tr><td>Division</td><td>Round 1</td><td>Round 2</td><td>Round 3</td><td>Round 4
</td></tr><tr><td>Pro Open</td><td>C</td><td>A</td><td>D</td><td>B
</td></tr><tr><td>Pro Masters</td><td>C</td><td>A</td><td>D</td><td>B
</td></tr><tr><td>Advanced Men</td><td>A</td><td>C</td><td>B</td><td>D
</td></tr><tr><td>Advanced Female</td><td>A</td><td>C</td><td>B</td><td>D
</td></tr><tr><td>Intermediate Male</td><td>A</td><td>C</td><td>B</td><td>D</tr></td></table>

If any of this seems off let me know and I will make the changes to these preliminary results.

It is possible that the preliminary ratings listed are correct.

I do not know the exact formula as to how ratings are calculated, but it is my understanding that if a low rated player shoots very good scores, that hurts the ratings for the field. It essentially makes the courses look easy to the ratings formula.

In this event 5 out of the 6 players who played the most above their current ratings have current ratings below 900. Here are the culprits in my opinion (name, current rating, 4-round event average above this rating):

Brian Satterfield 855 +37.50
Bobby Evans 969 +39.75
Don Murphy 885 +45.25
Rodney Gilmore 872 +46.25
Chip Wood 826 +63.50
Craig Wesnofske 845 +86.25
(Congrats to all these guys for shooting the lights out!)

There were also several players on the minus side who balanced those things out (I will not list their names and rub salt in their wounds). But, I think that since they are mainly higher rated players (920+), they will swing the average as much as those listed above.

I don't know if the ratings are low or not, but they do seem to be inconsistent.... particularly for the first day. The pro field played the woods in the morning and the field course in the afternoon, while the am/advanced group played the field course first and then the woods. Everyone played the same courses on the same day and there was really no difference in weather to warrant the scores being different.

As an example..... There were 5 - 50's from the blue woods pads shot in the moring by the pros that are rated 965, while the 2 -50's shot on the same course later in the day by the advanced field are rated at 940. On the same course, the 48's shot by the pro field are rated at 988 while the same scores shot in the advanced field are rated at 965. On the second day ratings, there are still inconsistencies, but they're much smaller...... the sames scores by the pros are rated 5-6 points higher than the same scores by the am field on the same courses.

I think Mike mentioned these may even out when the actual ratings get posted....... so we'll just have to wait and see.

Either way..... it was a very well run tournament and I had a great time playing all the different variations on the courses.

GTW,
You are the man...no longer the boy that alot of these peeps knew in the day. We have all changed alot, but you have always been one of the most respectful and modest people I have met in the game. You deserve all the props you are getting on this board. Mad love bro.

Damm, I had a great time this weekend. Lead card for the last round: LL, GTW, Snoop, and Bumpers...WTF happened? Oh, that's right, the lock-down thing. Thanks to my peeps in low places------>the Knappys, Action DG Gear...they make it all possible. Mad love to this tourney's staff...I heard a ton of people excited about Sneaky Pete and next year's Alamance P/A already...I can't say that those words have been heard in a while. Speaks volumes about the work and commitment they volunteered.

Enjoyed all my houseguests this weekend. You know how we get down. Had a great time with all my groups...the Fish Tent was in effect again...and the nectar was flowin'...It is good to be God.

Most of the time if you are walking with the lead group you see great shots, over and over and over and over again! I agree when that does not happen, It gets ulgy sometimes! I am guilty of that myself, but will try to control it in the future! Player attitude reflects badly on our growing sport.
