The Town of Chili Supervisor Tracy Logel has decided to keep the Chili Disc Golf Course open. The course will remain open for casual play only at this time. Organized Club events such as tournaments will not allowed because of lack of sanitary facilities (toilets). The Town will continue to mow the course.

The Chili Recreation Advisory Committee plans to submit their recommendations for the course to the Town Board in the near future.

Thanks to all of you who sent in e mails and attended the previous Recreation Committee meeting; your support helped. I remain optimistic that the sanitary facilities issue will be resolved and that we can hold organized events again, although it may take some time.

Just wanted some input from you locals up there, I'm visiting Rochester Oct 20-24 and am wondering what two courses are a must play, I've heard tons about CHILI so I'm counting that one for sure, any other world class compliment would be great!!!
Maybe some locs will be out there to show me around

Ellison and Basil are both excellent choices. Basil is the tougher of the two, and is a very tight wooded course. Ellison is open with some elevation changes on every hole. Both are fun to play.

I am coming up to rochester in 2 weeks, I will only have time to play one course, was wondering whats the best one to play, more worried about being able to find tee pads, and scenery than anything. If you have been to charlotte, n.c. where I am think reedy creek, and not renessaince or hornets nest, intermediate type player, just have one day to play, thanks again,.

Ellison and Churchville will be closed at the end of this month. I would suggest Basil Marella. The other available course(Chili) has better scenery, but I think Basil would be more convenient. There are distinct trails to lead you from basket to the next tee. It is a challenging course. It is also about 1 minute off of a highway. No course or parking fee.

-park entrance on right about 800ft
-1st hole is beyond bulletin board on right

Rumor has it that there will be better tee pads next year. We're hoping for cement, but if we can't get it we're going to fill in the tees and have natural pads.

IMO Chili is looking better now than it has in the past few years too.

CHILI — The Town Board is expected to approve a list of appointments to a new Parks and Recreation Master Plan Committee at its meeting tonight.

The town received a $20,000 grant to hire a consultant to help the committee develop a five-year comprehensive plan for its eight parks. The current parks and recreation plan expired in January.

One of the key areas of focus will be Baker Park on Scottsville-Chili Road. The park's fate has been in question since last year, when an advisory task force concluded that the disc golf course at the park wasn't benefiting the maximum number of Chili residents. The town pays to maintain the property, yet few Chili residents use the course, officials said.

Disc golf is similar to traditional golf, except a flying disc or Frisbee is used. The disc golf course hosted the World Professional Disc Golf Championships in 1999.

The committee is expected to review the amenities of the current parks as well as explore purchasing more land for parks, recreational programs and facilities.

The effort was led by Michael Curley, director of parks and recreation, and Town Board member Dennis Schulmerich.

About 15 people applied with various backgrounds in parks and recreation, and interviews took place last week, Curley said.

"We were looking for people who are going to be committed to meeting two or three times a month because our deadline to come up with a plan is December 31," he said.

CHILI — At a public forum Monday, residents will get an opportunity to sound off on the importance of their parks and what needs to be improved.

The 6 p.m. meeting at Town Hall, 3333 Chili Ave., is part of the current town Parks and Recreation Master Plan Committee update. The committee has met several times since July.

"I have a couple of people who have already mentioned the need for handicap accessible bathrooms in the parks," said Tracy Logel, Chili supervisor. "The public will have a chance to give extensive input and this meeting will be the perfect time."

In June, Chili formed a Parks and Recreation Master Plan Committee to create a five-year outline for development of the town's parks. The committee will review the amenities of the current parks as well as explore the need to purchase more land for parks, recreational programs and facilities. The previous master plan expired in January.

The town last week hired Passero Associates to work with Director of Park and Recreation Michael Curley to evaluate the needs, conditions of fields and infrastructure of the town's eight parks. The contract is not to exceed $15,000, Logel said.

"The consultants will be doing a lot of the research for us and taking inventory of our facilities," said Curley. "They are going to be bringing in ideas of what has worked with other parks and help us think outside the box."

What's next
Chili residents can voice their opinions on the town's parks at a public meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at Town Hall, 3333 Chili Ave.

I played Chili New Years Eve, and I find it sad how the course is slowly deteriorating. Tons of beer bottles and cans on the course. Many of the tee signs are broken lying on the ground. The flagpole is bent. The man-made obstacles are starting to fall apart.

I have been playing Chili once a year sine 1999 when I visit family in Rochester, and it's always a pleasure to be out there, and I really like the course. I hope the course is not being pulled by the township. I just wonder what town officials think when they walk the course.

I was also going to donate a few bucks, but I didn't see the cash box anymore. So I signed the guestbook.

CHILI � For three years, the fate of a Chili park that never really looked like a park had remained vague. However, this month the cloud of uncertainty was officially lifted.

The town will do an extensive renovation of Baker Park, starting with about $131,000 in grants procured by Sen. James Alesi, R-Perinton, and the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The Chili Town Board approved spending an additional $50,000 on the project.

A new parking lot, a walking path, a butterfly garden, an open-air picnic area and eventually a lodge and playground are some of the intended improvements to the Scottsville-Chili Road park. The park also doubles as a 27.9-acre course for disc golf, a game similar to traditional golf but played with a flying disc. The disc golf course hosted the World Professional Disc Golf Championships in 1999.

"Chili has a lot of great parks, and this was one of them that simply was underutilized because it needed work," said Michael Curley, Chili's director of parks and recreation. "We needed to make these upgrades."

The next few months will be spent on producing the final drawings, with Town Board approval in April and May. The bid process begins in June, construction in July. The project's completion is scheduled for November.

The park's future was in question because little or no action was taken even after an advisory task force concluded that use of the park was not being maximized. Then a parks and recreational master plan determined that the park had inadequate parking, lacked a ramp for people with disabilities and had a poor septic system.

Officials chose to store Highway Department equipment in the park under a covered shed. Former Chili Supervisor Tracy Logel often referred to the area as the Baker property instead of Baker Park.

"If we have to be honest, it didn't really look like a park," said David Dunning, Chili supervisor. "By the time we are all done, we are going to turn this property into a park. We needed this to happen for a long time."

Curley said the highway equipment will be stored elsewhere and the barn at the park will be moved.

Got my first opportunity to play Chili since the Pro Worlds in '99. It ranked as one of my Top 5 courses back then. After playing it last weekend it is now Number 1. The conditions were rain, wind and 55 degrees so leaving Florida's 85 degree weather and playing those conditions did not deter from the beauty of the course. The manicured fairways were unbelievable, the way the trees have grown up and filled in the course is amazing. Kudos goes out to the designers for putting things where they belonged a decade ago and allowing for such a natural progression. It is great to see that the renovation project of the park will continue. It would be a shame to lose such a World Class Course. Always keep petitions in mind when dealing with your state and local officials, they need to know what a treasure they have. Make sure you extend petitions to the entire disc golf communinty, the Power is in our numbers.

A little unfortunate side note were the conditions of the tee pads at Ellison. It doesn't look like these have been have been touched since the 99' Worlds. I understand that baskets were just installed so the park is essentially just opening up for summer; however, I hope the city isn't putting up a blockade to concrete as many parks do. They certainly can't think that these ever expanding craters of mud and rock are appealing to the natural asthetics, let alone garner possible lawsuits when someone breaks an ankle. Ellison is a great course in it's own right but unfortunately the beauty can only be seen when you are 10 feet in front of every tee pad. Hope you guys have some luck with new tee pads.

The tee pads at Ellison are simply the worst I've ever seen at any course, anywhere.

They keep the course from being rated in my top 20 out of more than 170 played lifetime in the U.S. and Canada.

Some are worse than others but overall they're all pretty crappy. Often times I will throw from the grass next to the tee.

The local club is looking into doing something with them but I think concrete may be out since the park is used heavily for sledding in the winter.
