Yeah, I love the fact that you wouldn't have to walk around the "bolf" driving range... who needs THAT much exercise? :D
Not sure I would like getting rid of old #6... what a great hole - hard for both handers.

You are not kidding on old #6...that holes was so fun...never knew, being a righty...if that 2nd shot was parked or downtown...but I can live without walking around back there during the summer when it is 3ft tall and all cockleburs.
Maybe we can get a few portables out there this weekend and setup a few of them after the mini and check them out...

Is the pond still covered with Lilypads and Hydrilla? I use a float tube and fly rod to fish this pond, but last time i was out in October, it was unfishable b/c of the "Salad". Oh, i sometimes play disc there before or after the fish, but usually not. With the way the layout looks, i'll give it another shot.

Apr 11 2004, 06:44 PM
Adam won the CTP for the beast...Adam and Danny both tied with 54 for the round, both of us Brians were well behind them. what happened to that TXvsOK Zwasp that you mentioned? :) i'll buy that off of you if you still want to get rid of it. that was the main reason i showed up :)
thanks for running this, casey. it was nice playing with you guys: adam, brian, and danny. hope to see y'all 5/16.
The rain stayed away...I lost one of my favorite discs on #15 in the high grass..all 4 of us looked for 10min or so to no avail, but after they left I found it in less than 5min. It was vertical in the grass...if you looked straight down you couldnt see it...some other guys lost a disc in the high grass on the levee on #6. it's already time to start worrying about the mowing situation.
okcacehole
Apr 11 2004, 06:48 PM
Well Danny and I tied for CHAMPION OF THE UNIVERSE with 54's...Brian Krell pulled in a 66 and Brian Cox pulled a 67...I won yet another CTP and now own your Beast. Too bad I don't shoot them, but it will find a home.
Looking forward to the new layout proposal when the city takes a look at it. Should cut their mowing in 1/2 and allow for a little less extra walking between holes. Hopefully they stay excited and give us some tee pads and regular mowing.
Danny and Brian..enjoyed meeting both of you and Brian, I completely spaced while we were out there. I guess you just recently purchased 2 Orc's from my doubles partner, Joe, and I meant to set a time on Friday to meet you at Greenbelt. Not bad. I donated one to the water lords the last time I was there. I kinda expect to get wet every time I play there. Last time I was at Jimmy I played 1-9, then 17-18. Lost one on 17, and saw 4 others splash down.
I don't like playing courses in flood plains. Water is a necessary evil in TX, I guess...

That is the sure beauty of that course, along with the asthetics of just looking at it while you walk it. Almost every hole has water in play and you had better have your retriever with you. -6 in doubles doesn't cut it in the slightest....but thanks......that is what we need on one course in San Saba..

Good Luck Adam and Joe. Just one thing "...this is a skill game, Joe..."- rounders. :D
Would love to see the minis put up on the billboard so everyone that plays here could see when they are going to happen
First off let me just say I really like the course now that the back 9 has been changed, I do understand that alot of the holes become unplayable if the city does not mow them. I have played the course 3-4 times a week for about 4 years and each summer I end up driving to Lewisville to play since it does become unplayable.
Now with that done let me ask a couple of questions on the new layout that is proposed and offer couple of suggestions.
First if the city will double or at least keep the course mowed if it is shortened then I'm all for it, doesn't matter how much I like the course as is if I can't play it.
Second Is the first hole basket going to be where the 17th basket is now? I'd like to see a basket stay on that area that is the 17th basket now.
Third The 4th Tee box (on the proposed course) needs to be moved some whenever it rains it stays unusuable for weeks.. Not too sure which way to go with it but would suggest more north toward the open fairway. Would also make it harder to get around the trees
Fourth the 10th basket (on the proposed course) needs to come out from under the trees same as 4th tee it gets wet and stays that way.. tougher the way it is but once again if you can't play it .. it won't matter how good.
Fifth the 11th tee is where the old basket for 13 used to be? in the deep weeds? Very interesting hole if it is maintained.
I'd really hate to lose the 6th and 7th hole that is out there now but once again no matter how good they are if unplayable doesnt' matter.
Once again I would be behind the new course layout if the mowing would be increased and the course would be playable all the time. But if the mowing can't happen then I'm completly opposed to moving the course anymore. Mostly because most of the new holes are shorter, one of the differences between this course and others in the area is the length. Plenty of short courses in the area already.
thanks for listening to my rant. Jay

I do post the minis EVERY time on the board at the course. They usually are gone the next day after I post them. Maybe if there was glass/plastic the flyers might make it more than a day. I dont get up there but maybe once or twice a week and I try to post the info every time I am there. I am not going to reply to your course ranting, read this thread and the Denton North Lake tourney thread and your questions should be answered.

i think randy has some valid points about the tees/baskets that are proposed to be in prolonged mud/flood prone areas.

Brian I will E-mail you the flyer in a few. I would definitely appreciate the help in distributing the flyers. I never really thought about putting them around the campus. I run the minis just so players can get together and have fun. I turn no profit at all, it actually costs me out of pocket. I am hoping that the draw dubs for the next mini will draw a few more players. I would love to see some newbies out and I would even open Rec. for them :D.

The course will be very close to 6000+sq ft( I believe). on the new proposal which is still a pretty long course..mowing more often will save the course and the city wants to host a PDGA event.

The next mini in May wil most likely be the last!! I think everyone knows my opinion about the current layout. Since I have basically stopped playing, I just cant see spending my time and money there. Glad to hear they will mow more often. I plan on concentrating on trying to get approval for a course in Corinth, Shady Shores, or Lake Dallas. Shady Shores is my 1st pick/try.

i was looking forward to the new layout, but if the mowing will be increased to a reasonable schedule (with a frequency high enough to allow year round play, unlike last summer where the grass on some holes was over my head) then i dont mind the current layout. the most attractive thing about the new layout was the prospect of having the whole course playable all year.

Apr 27 2004, 10:41 PM
i played the course for the first time since the last mini today...here are some observations:
- basket #12 has been recently moved to be in the trees further away from the driving range (recently meaning in the last 2 weeks or so)
- tee for #17 has been recently moved to be right next to the road, making it a straight shot across the creek to the pin, instead of a semi-blind hyzer.
- fairway for #14 was flooded, bigtime. about knee-deep. basket was totally surrounded by water, also. keep in mind it has been 3-4 days since any rain.
- starting at #12 basket, the fairways were very recently mowed. but, if this is any indication of the new mowing schedule that we're getting, then the course is in serious trouble. the "mowing" was just a 15ft swath cut from basket to teebox to basket....other than that narrow path, the weeds on #14 and #15 are already waist-high and some are approaching chest-high.
if this "mowing" is all that is going to be done, then holes 13, 14, 15, 16 are all going to be totally unplayable VERY soon.
someone needs to tell the city that a 15ft wide fairway on a 450ft hole just doesnt cut it. there was a kid playing with his mom when i was there, and she was irate because she had to walk through knee-deep water and waist-high weeds, with much poison ivy, just to supervise her kid. she said she was going to call the city and complain.
i hope something can be done about the mowing, because i doubt the entire course will be playable for the next mini if this is the only area that will be mowed.
okcacehole
Apr 28 2004, 02:15 PM
Bummer to hear Brian....I still really like the idea of the 18 laid out just on the front side. That would really make the mowing easier for the city and the course would have much better flow. I just haven't really been able to look at those proposed holes and see how challenging they may be.
I know the city said they are sticking with the current layout, but apparently someone is already changing parts of it around. If the grass gets like last year, you can count on the May mini being the last I play until the grass dies off again.
bcoxxx
Apr 29 2004, 07:38 PM
good news! i dont know if someone talked to the city, or what, but i went to northlake and played it again today, and it was mowed again either today or yesterday. there are now 50-100ft wide nicely mowed fairways on EVERY hole, and big tees and "greens" mowed around every basket...very nice.
most of the water around #14 basket was gone, and with the new widely mowed fairway, the water wasnt too bad on the fairway, either...i even par'd #14 for the first time ever.
the course is in its best shape, ever, imho. maybe the kid's mom from monday called and complained to the city or something...
anyway, if they mow this same area every couple weeks or maybe once a month through the summer, then the course will be great as is.

Apr 29 2004, 07:52 PM
there were even 5 or 6 different groups out there playing today...good to see more people out there.
the only thing i would change right now is to move the #15 teebox away from the creek, into the mowed fairway area...it stays muddy over there for so long after a rain that it is dangerously slippery...
if anyone wants to play northlake sometime, send me a PM on here and i'll send you my email and/or phone number...

Dave O. and Dave E. took 1st in a playoff on #2 where Dave's roller stopped about 25ft. short and then he sunk the putt! Jeff D. and Aaron? took 2nd, on #2 Jeff's drive was about 20 ft. short but they could not convert the duece. Danny W. and Andy ? took 3rd with a 50, Brian ? and Spencer took 4th. I went and played northlake yesterday, and have some great news...in the last two weeks the course has been mowed two more times, including totally mowing the ENTIRE area between the fairways of #14/#15/#16. there are also BRAND NEW full color permanent signs on every tee, with the correct hole information and a map of the hole...there are also brand new basket # labels on each basket. very nice. i guess the city is trying to get the course in great shape for the tournament.
i also shot my best round out there yesterday, 56. i was surprised at the distances on alot of the holes...i would've sworn some of them were well over 500', possibly 600' (especially #11, which also has directions to #12 on the tee sign now)..but i think all the holes are under 500'...many of them are in the 480-495' range. the "pars" are all marked, with most of the holes being labeled par 4 and 5.
be careful if you get off any of the fairways, though, on the front nine. the rough is getting really thick and it's really easy to lose discs in the high grass.

played northlake again today...
they mowed the grass AGAIN since my last post, including mowing more areas that had not been mowed previously, and also they put up a huge metal full color map of the course (aerial photograph with holes superimposed) on the bulletin board near the parking lot.
i wrote down the hole length and "par" from each tee sign...(am par i guess...the map says "pro par 3 all holes". )
#1 230ft (par 3)
#2 416ft (par 4)
#3 485ft (par 4)
#4 350ft (par 3)
#5 400ft (par 4)
#6 487ft (par 5)
#7 440ft (par 4)
#8 283ft (par 3)
#9 328ft (par 4)
#10 276ft (par 3)
#11 499ft (par 4)
#12 418ft (par 4)
#13 288ft (par 3)
#14 476ft (par 5)
#15 324ft (par 4)

#17 224ft (par 3)
#18 319ft (par 3)

See good things can happen when working with a city and planning an event. I hope to see the course Sunday afternoon or Monday. I have some papers to sign with the city so have to be there anyway Monday.
The Denton Open on June 26 will be fun.

A 2 on 14 would be one hell of a shot...if they mowed I might get a roller up there...doubtful on a drive...did par it the first time I played it though
space76
Jun 17 2004, 02:52 PM
Anyone willing to give me a hand taking entries and doing scorecards? I am trying to play in this one and still have it run smoothly/timely. ANY help would be appreciated. Bet there will be a couple twos there next weekend. P.S. casual water on 14 WILL prevent a roller from getting thru the mando.

i highly doubt anyone will get a two on #14, but if they do i'd like to see it. casey, i would volunteer to help you out but i dont know if i'm going to be able to play...we have fathers day plans with the inlaws, and i might be celebrating my first father's day by then, who knows. So why the mando on #14 in the local tournaments? I doubt Chris will make it a mando in the Denton Open.....i see no reason to.
space76
Jun 18 2004, 10:04 PM
The fairway is narrow. Without the mando you get in #15's way on either side of the trees. 15 is also mando beside the trees to the creek. I usually dont use the mando's for the monthly mini's, but I wanna see someone hit it. If you cant try it for a candy ROC, I sympathize. :D;)

Brian ,
I lost a Z-Pred on the downhill shot towards the pond (maybe hole 9 or 10?) the disc is pin high near the tall sawgrass about 15' out. It's a yellow Z-pred with an orange dye job. I'll give you a disc of your choice if it comes back to me. Thanks.

LMAO! My closets are full of discs, both pre and post sponsorship. My wife says NO MORE!! Too bad Discraft sends me a lot of stuff every year. Sorry Amy! :D
I was out there on Tues of last week revisiting the course. It looks like we'll have to fish it from the shore. The hydrilla is too thick for me to be float tubing. The last time i tried in hydrilla that thick, i lost a flipper.
Yes, i'll bring my gear. Never had a bad time fishing!

it's hole #9...did you just lose it? i dont fully understand where you're saying the disc is...is it in the water? or in the grass on the side of the levee?
i probably wont be playing the denton open this weekend....the wife is going to have to have a c-section (thursday) so she'll still be in the hospital this weekend. i'll try to get down there maybe tomorrow and wade around in the water, if that's where the z-pred is...

It's in the water. Short of the basket and about 15' off the edge. I was a witness. :( There is a light blue Valk out near it. Not mine but belongs to someone that kind of looks like me. I guess that would be my brother. :D

Jun 22 2004, 10:37 AM
Thanks for making that more clear Mark. YES, it's in the pond :( Very close to pin high, right next to some sawgrass about 10'-15' out from the shore. I wanted to wade for it, but we were unsure how deep it is that far out.

Jun 22 2004, 10:50 AM
It is #9- about 30ft. short of the basket and about 20 ft in the pond. Thats what I remember. Quit bashing the ROC- I was just trying to get people to play the mini. I always put up the discs I have won for the players in the mini to win- somehow. Just felt a little more than a CTP shot should take the disc. I lose money on these minis, but if everyone has fun its worth it to me. :DI might move up this weekend- we will see.

anyone know who to talk to with the city about mowing? they havent mowed the majority of the course since june, and the weeds in some of the fairways are waist-high (#13 and #14 especially). they mowed earlier this week, but only did #2, #3, #4, and that's it.
i thought that increased mowing schedules were part of the deal with keeping the current layout? every time i've been out there over the last couple weeks i've talked to multiple groups that turned around after #6 or so because they couldnt deal with the high grass..

thanks for the info, wray...i'll report back later on this week about course conditions...
i had my longest drive ever yesterday at northlake...PARKED #7...440ft with a blue flash...it was an easy drop-in..too bad it was a practice drive... :) i lost the same disc today on the same hole (in the really tall grass to the right of the fairway just before the levee near the hole)...i looked for 20min solid, searching every square foot of the area i last saw the disc...i finally gave up, and was about to leave...then...i swear to God...i tried praying...really...i'm not a religious person, really, but i said out loud "please God help me find this disc". then, i looked down at my feet and the sun was reflecting a tiny bit of blue from under the huge weeds...it was right under my feet. i was awed and grateful.

i played again today...no transcendental enlightenment, unfortunately, but they did mow today...the fairway/entire area of #13-#17. the swampy area in the middle/left of #13 is entirely mowed...they didnt touch #5-#11, though.
#4, #5, #6 are now the ones in the worst need of mowing, in case anyone can relay that message. if they could mow the entire levee on those holes, it would make it alot easier on beginner players. i dont really see it happening though...
bcoxxx
Aug 01 2004, 07:21 PM
i havent played northlake since last week, but i pulled a drive-by just now to check it out, and they mowed the ENTIRE area sometime recently. it is now impossible to lose discs anywhere on holes #2, #3, and #4 at least....those huge fields of waist-high grass are GONE. in the 1.5 years i've lived here i've never seen them mow those fields...all the way from the road to the lake is mowed...don't know about the back side, since we just drove by for a minute.

The ADGA sunday mini starts at 10am sharp...sign up at 9:30.
As for the Ace Race, we will be meeting near hole #15. We set up 9-12 holes in the oaks(holes 11,14,15,16) and play the loop three or four times, whichever gives us 36 holes.
At North Lake Park -8 is muy bueno. I counted about 12 holes, 400ish or less. Getting 8 of the 12 is great.

it's alot different than most other DFW courses....it has many 400'+ holes that are mostly wide open, so you can really work on your distance drives. there are some shorter, tighter holes on the back 9 that play around a creek, and there is one hole you throw beside/over a corner of a lake. there is some elevation changes on a few holes on the front due to the levees that run through the course. i'd check it out..they've been mowing it alot more frequently, but i wouldnt go there within a couple days of rain. muddy in places, flooded at one fairway and basket sometimes, and killer mosquitoes lately after big rains.
Thanks, I'll check it out in the next few weeks.
