A putter, a stable midrange, and a stable driver. There are so many great discs to choose from and everybody has different preferences. :) Personally, I'd go with a Wizard putter, a Zbuzz, and an Orc.

Gotta go with the masses on this one - a Roc. For tight fairways and improved accuracy on open approaches, having a disc that flies as close to straight as possible with no pronounced fade at the end of its flight is very difficult to achieve with a driver. Some other mid-range discs can accomplish this, but usually not as consistently well as a Roc.
All you need are a Wizard putter and a Ram!!

If you want to know what the best disc is, there is no best disc. There are many popular discs, but everyones throw is different and everyone has different hands. Just throw as many different discs as you can. Ask if you can try discs at your course, most people will be glad to let you try their discs! Hey BamBam,
I'm jsut trying to tell the guy to decide by throwing discs rather than asking people what they think are the best discs. As you can see, everyone has their own tastes. I know that alot of people like to throw the latest and greatest, and thats great. I also know that alot of people like to stick to the classics and thats great too. My point is that everyone has different tastes, and if you force yourself to fall into a particular mold, you may be depriving yourself.

If you are new, you want stuff that is stable to slightly understable.
Putter-any putter you like...you have to get a feel for one. Once you find one, try to find the same exact mold, same exact weight and go practice.
Midrange-Buzzz, Wasp, Shark, Roc
Drivers-Tbird, Leopard, JLS, valkyrie When you start flipping those consistantly, then move up to the orc, qjls, or the beast
I thought the answer to this question would just be informing this guy of a disc(s) that he should definately check out.
If that's the case, I'd say you definately need to check a buzzz out. Also, yes, the Cryztal challengers are the best putters I've ever held. The plastic is alot grippier than the standard Z line challenger, and it's a great mid range as well. Not quite as soft as some prefer, but I feel safer putting with a hard challenger than I do with a gooey Aviar or Omega SS.
If you're looking for something to throw nice and hard, and have great results flipping over, as well as a great overhand disc, check out a Monster.
I was playing a round with my daughter last week and she thought she was being cute and took my Ram out of my bag while I wasn't looking. I had to explain to her that "if you're going to steal any of my discs, DON'T TAKE THIS ONE!"
Ram, it even makes a great putter on those windy days.

They will actually 'glide' when seasoned.
Yeah demons are sweet when they are old. Its probably a good thing that they fly like crap when they are new...most people will put it down before they break it in. I've got one that is broken in and it took 6 months before I even saw the glide. Now its a year and a half old and its super straight and floaty. I have no problem throwing this thing 325 but I can't throw a Roc over 280 or so.
I also threw an 86 softie for the first time yesterday. That is a sweet putter. It goes exactly where you putt it and it fades dead straight! Its like throwing a lid!

Its interesting that you mention this. My first midrange was a DX Cobra. I went to an MRV because of the Z plastic but now that the Cobra is in Candy I am using it again. I really like this disc for straight up midrange shots and it glides for ever. I have also found that the buzz has the same flight characteristics but of course at $4.00 more on average.
I know it's a sin but I've never thrown a ROC. How does it compare to the Cobra? My impression has always been that it flies more overstable, like the MRV.

What is a Cobra? :D
Roc is more overstable than the Cobra. To me the Cobra can't take much wind in the face whereas the Roc can't take some slight wind(up to 15mph). Also, I think the Buzz is a tad bit more overstable than the cobra as well.

The Champion Viking is a great disc. I got a red one a while ago and it is pretty understable. It has been a great turnover disc as it seems to hold the anhyzer line pretty consistently across wind conditions and is the most predictable disc of this type I've ever thrown. That being said, if thrown flat it turns, so it is not a good straight distance driver. A week ago I bought a blue Viking of the same weight (173g) and it is a totally different disc. It is straight as straight can be and almost as long as my Orcs. Today I threw it on a hole that is 343' and fairly straight, but it is wooded along the left side of the fairway so you have to throw hyzer. I messed up my release and threw the disc straight off the tee right at the jungle. Somehow it found its way through unimpeded and came to rest two feet from the pin. This was with a 5-10mph headwind. Simply put, this is the straightest candy disc I have ever thrown, and I've thrown them all(with the exception of the CFR glow TL).

I started with a 176 gram cobra back in 1995 and still have that disc in my bag. Best disc ever. Stayed away from rocs until last year. As much as I love my roc, my cobra will always be unreplaceable. If I only had 1 disc the rest of my life it would be the cobra. It glides better than a roc, and it can roll, hyzer, anhyzer, s curve better than any other disc out there.
The Buzz is about the same speed as a Cobra, but requires much more effort to fly as far. In other words is has much less glide. I can say that the ZBuzz (178g) holds its line in the wind better than any versatile midrange I've ever thrown.
While I agree about the holding its line better than anything else part, I strongly disagree with it having less glide or speed than a Cobra.
I threw a cobra for quite awhile, and agree its a great disc (especially in candy), but I could never throw one as far or as fast as I throw my Buzzz's.
I hit a 276' hole this morning with an X-Buzzz, on a wide sweeping annie that had to travel a lot more than 276' to splash out of the chains like it did. Never could've done that with a Cobra, although I could've thrown the annie for a good birdie putt with it.
The Buzzz is da shizzz.
The Champion Viking is a great disc. I got a red one a while ago and it is pretty understable. ... A week ago I bought a blue Viking of the same weight (173g) and it is a totally different disc. It is straight as straight can be and almost as long as my Orcs.
Well, its nice to know its not just me. I had the exact same experience w/ the viking. I got a red one, it was way too flippy. I won a blue one at a tournament, and Its straight and I love it. Good thing i won it at a tournament, because i certainly wasn't going to buy another one after my first experience with the viking. At this point, its probably my most consistently long disc. I can throw both my flash and my orc farther if i throw them really well, but if i threw all three of them not quite perfect, the viking would travel the farthest, and closest to its "perfect" (at least as close to perfect as i'm able to get right now) distance. in other words, its my most forgiving long driver. Have since sold the red one to a friend because it was out of control flippy for me.
I have three yellow vikings...nice and overstable

I know it's a sin but I've never thrown a ROC. How does it compare to the Cobra? My impression has always been that it flies more overstable, like the MRV.
Near the end of last summer (I started last April) I realized that I couldn't throw slow, floaty midranges, like the Roc and MRV, so I decided to get that figured out. I got a DX Roc and Elite-X MRV and compared the two. I found that once I was able to get them to fly right they both had pretty similar flight patterns. If you're just looking for a general description I think it would be safe to say they pretty much fly the same. I'm sure someone who's a Roc and/or a MRV expert would have a big list of differences, but I don't think any of them would be that large. They have pretty similar speed and glide and about the same stability.
I haven't thrown a Champion Cobra, but if they're anything like a E-Element (I've heard they are) then the Roc is slower and more overstable to start out with, IMHO. Thrown so they fly straight, the fade comes pretty late in the flight, but when new they do fight pretty hard to flex out of any throw that's not intended to be an anhyzer.
I don't know if it's really a "must have" but I've really been appreciating the E-Element lately. Not only is is a solid, straight midrange, but it also works well for those 15' putts where you miss with your putter and grab the closest disc and throw it in to prove to yourself that you can make the shot. ;)

Recently the monster has been taking the place of the ROC's... yeah, sounds retarded I know, but I'm far more accurate with the near flat overhand tomahawk throw that skips/skids to within 5-10 ft. No I can't sink it with that throw, but just about any midrange approach for me is monster material. It was purely my nightgolf, goof around shot, but its developed into the biggest tool in my bag.
And the spikehyzers! Oh man.
pray that you don't encounter a course with a low ceiling and/or tight fairways/alleys, because your tomahawk will become useless faster than you can learn to re-throw your straight mid-ranges. my advice to anyone trying to improve their mid-/short game would be practice, NOT to substitute that part of the game with something like a tomahawk, it can only get you in trouble when not at a course like your home course. just my opinion.

Best shot in my game might be the low straight midrange shot. 230-270' I can just throw a MRV/Buzz/Wasp real low and straight. Comes from playing a real tight wooded course with holes that MAKE you throw a perfectly straight shot. Getting confidence with this shot can help you on almost every course.

I agree completely, however the throw is for low canopy shots, as it never gets high enough to bother the tree branches, it's more of a skip/slip shot... and yes, it's nothing to learn BEFORE you learn midrange, or to use on alley shots.

How soon did it become grippy? The supercolor seemed slick at first, but i noticed Coda's (before he went AWOL) were nice n grippy too.

I guess our grip standards are different. I loved the way mine felt as soon as I got it.

a disc that wil never leave my bag is the Z-MRV and the Buzz. They are almost always interchangable but when I throw the buzz it seems to float a lot more which makes its landing more managable
Special Blend Roc.
I second that. This disc in the short time it's been out has become my "go to" disc in about every situation.
