This is a more comprehensive continuation of the topic in Equipment about which disc people got their first discs with.

What disc was it? ( :p)
How long had you been playing?
Course?

Just give us the whole **** story!

I personally have no story to tell because I've not aced a hole. I have been inches from aces, even hitting the post and other metal before, but no ace yet,

Disc: 173g Elite-Z Buzzz

Hole: #13 Blendon Woods. Last Sunday (Mar. 28, 2004) 195' slightly downhill, fairly wide open hole. Threw disc low, flat, and hard...started to fade just as it hit chains and stuck. I was stunned, I've never thrown that disc that far before...

Been playing since July of 2003

#7 at cornwall park, Bellingham, WA. Its a super easy 180' with alot of options. I aced it with a drop in hyser with a CE Spider X-Out. I was 15 and it was in february. I had been playing for about 5 months. Now im 17 and been playing a little over 18 months. I've dropped 4 this year and about 13 total. Most have been with my trusty G5i Demon.

funny this thread came up when it did...

Yesterday, saturday april 03 i hit my first ace. It was with a Champion Line Orc on Hole 11 196 feet at Dorey Park. First time I had ever played that course and the 2nd course i had ever played. Threw the orc low and flat and knew it would fade off to the left. Went farhter than i had planned, than made a really sharp left hand dive coming around a tree and then nailing the basket from the left and stuck. the best part was, i was with my dad who had never been disc golfing before. I've been playing for about 4 weeks now. great feeling

Hole 8 - 250ft

I had begun playing disc golf in the previous couple months.

*new* 168 DX Proto Beast (innova stamp in center) - Flat hyzer. Knew it was in when I let it fly.

It is still my only ace to this day :(
If anyone has any yellow proto beasts, please let me know :)

I believe it was 1988. It was on hole #4 at Fantasy Park, Las Vegas. The hole was a 315' downhill dog leg left. I aced it with a Huntington Beach Higher Flyer XD that I bought from Bob West. I had been playing almost 3 years.

wichita falls, tx
lucy park
#9, ~170ft
"Dr. Dyed" 173g Innova Champion Monster
(the disc is on dr dye's ace gallery.. drdyed.com i think)
hyzer one skip into the middle of the chains
i started playing 2/1/03 (same day the shuttle blew up)

my buddy and i went up to WF so i could play the two courses that were going to be used the following weekend for the texas10 tour (which i ended up cashing for the first time ever in, MA3 rec) anyway we played lucy park then went to the longer lake wichita park...lucy was so short that we wanted to go get another round in before we left so we could both try to get our first ace. i count this as an ace, but it was actually my 3rd shot...i threw my "real" drive, a z-buzzz, then threw a glo-wasp, then decided "what the hell..i'm going to try to skip a monster in". the disc did exactly what i was trying to do and skipped perfectly in...the basket was up on a small little dirt hill in some trees and i skipped it right where the bottom of the dirt hill started. it was sweet. even though it was my 3rd drive, i'm counting it, dammit! :)

i've made much longer "field ace" shots...i had only been playing for a few months when i birdied #6 in plano, tx (shawnee park) from about 200ft out, also a skip with a monster. i made a "circle 3" on hole #11 at lake lewisville, tx from OB, about 225ft, S-curve with a Z-buzzz. just birdied hole #17 at lake lewisville for the first time this week from about 125ft with the same Z-buzzz (the hole is over 400ft). i'm confident my 2nd ace will be with the buzzz.

Hole #2 McNaughton Park, Pekin, IL
320' with a Small Bead Aviar. (it's a downhill hole....probably drops like 50-60 feet)

I didn't see it nor hear it go in. Leo Wilson (or maybe it was Scott Martin, I can't remember) walked 50 feet to the start of the dropoff and said, "That's in the hole!" I said, "You're full of $%&^" I walked to the start of the downslope, looked down, and there it was in the basket.

I promptly made a triple-bogey 6 on the next hole.

It was my first ace in like 10 years of playing. I had perhaps hundreds (at least it seemed like it) of drives go through the chains, hit the pole and come back out (darn Mach 1's in Columbia, MO, later converted to Mach 2), yada yada yada, but this was the first one that stuck.

My ace count is currently at 6. Last ace was July 4, 2002 in Salina, KS....358' :)

Apr 05 2004, 09:49 AM
Disc: 171g DX Roc
Hole: #5, Harry Dunham Park, Liberty Corner, NJ
Dist: 176'
Been playing for about 3-4 months at the time.

Story: I was out shooting a couple rounds with a guy who was playing for the first time, trying to pass on what little knowledge and advice I had acquired (although it was more like the blind leading the blind). Anyway, we get to this hole which is basically a straight shot, with the basket on top of a 8-foot hill. There are thick shrubs/trees on the right so hyzer is out. I explain to the newbie that I usually throw a Roc with just a little anhyzer on it just to guarantee no tree problems. I step up and throw -- the disc takes a nice line but I'm positive it's going to go long. Well it anhyzers to a little right of the basket and fades right in -- didn't hit a single chain.

While warming up before Warwick Ice Bowl, my third throw of the year goes in, I turn to Dan Howard who's standing next to me and say "hey, you've never done that have you". He still hasn't and I haven't since then.

Apr 05 2004, 04:43 PM
My first ace was at Monroe, NC hole 4 (shorts). It is a wide open 295ft, but you can't see the basket from the tee. I lost site of it, turned around and CRASH. I still can't believe it.

My first and only ace in our brothren Ball Golf, came in 1995 when I was in college. There was three of us, and the course was crowded. It was hole 17, and we probably already drank about a case and a half of Natural Light. It was an uphill 165yd par 3 with an elevated green. You could see the top of the pin and half the green, but not the cup that day. It was windy so I hit a punch 6 iron. I thought I hit a good shot. I go up to the green and don't find my ball so I do what any 21 yr old college kid would do...I took my putter to the woods behind the green and started smacking trees while looking for my ball. One of my buddies putted out, saw my ball and tackled me like Mike Singletary. We were so drunk, the guy in the pro shop didn't believe me. :D

March 30, 2004

Got my first ace last Tuesday at Oak Grove #12. On my birthday! Been playing about 6 months. I guess it's a fairly easy hole, though the tee pad is closely bordered by 15 foot
high bushes on either side that are about 20 feet apart and go out about 30 feet from the slightly elevated tee. The basket is 280 feet straight ahead.
Threw a 150g jelly plastic JK Valkyrie. Went perfectly straight just to the right of the basket and I knew it was a good shot right away. I thought it would land about 5-6 feet short of the pin and probably slide a bit for a sure-fire birdie.
Instead, it faded a bit left and slammed into the chains for an ace!

my last ace was a few months ago with Red Whittington's old small mold hammer that I had got from him the day before. Walked up the hill to Hole #17 at knob hill park. put her into the air with the slowest glide you could ever imagine. It just hovered on a straight line about 50 feet in the air and then slowed down and dropped right into the chains. It seemed like it took at least 30 seconds for the disc to make it the 250 some feet. It was a beautiful thing. Number 10 for me, and 5 mulligan aces...DOH

Apr 06 2004, 02:42 AM
I actually have a ball golf ace too...I was really into ball golf back in the day. I think I was about 13 years old. It wasn't really on a hole, it was on a driving range that had flags and holes set up on it. I watched my ball fly 175 yards and dissappear!

No one believes me to this day!! but I still say it happened!

My short, somewhat interesting, ace history:

First Ace- March 2003, been playing for 4 years.
180 DX Roc!
Hole 14, Frettie Baugo Creek in Osceola, IN
Off a tree trunk, off a twig, through some more branches, nothing but chain!
I hit it during a tournament, didn't pay in the ace fund :(

2nd Ace: On my birthday, Dec 2003, in best shot. Hole 13 @ Ox Bow (Goshen, IN). Tomahawked a 174 Pro Line Firebird. 2 holes later my partner hit an ace. 2 aces in a round, and we still came in second :(
but we both walked away with $100 each!

3rd Ace: 2004 Michiana Open (SuperTour) three weeks ago.
180 04 CE Roc @ George Wilson Park (Mishawaka, IN) hole 15, won $250

May 25 2004, 02:20 PM
October 2003
Hole #15 @ Northpark in Seattle
280 ft Dogleg right
174g Proline Beast

BIG S shot over some trees, heard a big "WHACK" off the 150 ft. pine tree, and then a meek little "ching". I thought someone was putting on the next hole, it was so faint. BUT I walked up there, no one was around and the disc was in the basket!

Not my ace and I didn't even "see" it, but I think as first aces go this one was pretty cool. Saturday night a week ago, two round singles tournie, Yadkinville, NC with one round late afternoon and the second round glow. Cliff Hutchens of Yadkinville, not been playing long and playing in his first tournie hits his first ace ever in the glow round on hole #14, about 220', steep uphill open shot. Another cool aspect, a few miinutes after Cliff's glow ace, Shane Stephens slammed chains on the same #14 basket and everyone assumed an ace until they got to the basket, found his disc lying beside the basket and started looking for the CTP marker. When they eventually discovered the marker suspended from the glow stick Shane said, "Well that's why it didn't stick. It wasn't meant too." Turns out Shanes first ace ever was also in his first tournie, a glow round in Kingsport, Tennessee. Good kharma abounds.

I had been playing for about 2 months. I was on hole #18 at Seymour Smith in Omaha NE. Its like a 200' turnover hole, but I only threw FH at the time, so it wasn't a big deal. Hit the chains harder than I have ever seen in my life. A fellow (at the time!) rec runs up and congratulates me.

Oh yeah, it was a ProLine FireChicken.

12/24/2003
Hole 12, Advanced tee, Bear Creek, Grapevine, TX
A group of us were practicing for the upcoming Poison Ivy Open, which uses both sets of tees. Hole 12 has a very deep and wide gully before the basket. I was just trying to get my throw on the plateau near the basket. I threw my beat up yellow teebird, it went under a leaning tree, drifted a little to the left, and came back to the right, hit the chains, and dropped in. Best of all, I had three witnesses. :)

My 1st. Ace finnaly came 11mons. into tourn. play.
The funny thing is that I dreamed it 2 nights prior to hitting it.
The story starts w/ me trying to get a quick 18 in b4 I had to go into work. BB Owens is the course, and nothing special as far as performance on this day(6-16-04) a couple of birdies a couple of bogies I'm sitting at even. Hole 13 on backside I throw a Z-Crush hyzer shot over some short trees on the right
lokking good all the way- drops just on right side of the basket takes a hell of skip and slams the side of the basket causing it to roll down the back side of the hill. That was close! Two holes later (15) same shot, same disc, only about 50 ft. longer, hyzer over short trees on right, keep in mind there is a tree directly over the basket, disc looking awosme all the way but I was sure It was gonna hit the tree like many times b4. Disc fades right b4 the tree, takes one badass skip and slams the chains. Oh Yea!!!!!!
4 witnesses, nothing better for my 1st. ACE.

i just got mine last weekend at the Waco Am weekend. been playing since i was 40 (this is my six summer) with a few 6 month layoffs during that time.

on hole 12 at the olde cameron course - it was our next to last hole of the second round, and i had had a perfectly crappy first round. anyway, there's a BIG tree dead center, halfway to the pin (285 i think). righties take a mighty hyzer and dive in at the hole, lefties like me dont have a high attack line due to a thick tree short and left of the pin. all that was left was a low line, and basically a hope for a birdie. the leaves on the center tree weigh it down so much this time of year i knew i'd have to scorch it just to reach the pin, and i was pretty worried about the canopy. too high and you're knocked down at 125'. too low and you're munching grass. i had to back off my first step up cuz some kids playing football ran across my intended line. finally i took the shot and thought it was good enough ... definitely hot enough... then when it went barely below the first canopy it started looking better and i was pretty sure i was gonna be in birdieland. the disc (crush) hit about 12 feet short, and skipped hard dead center pole. it flopped straight down in the front of the pan, so there were no doubts it stuck!

been waiting for that one way too many months, thats for sure.

Jun 20 2004, 06:29 PM
I had my first ace this past Thursday. It was on a temporary course set up at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC. It was on the 8th hole, a 220' hole with the basket placement protected by a large pine tree to the left and an large holly tree in the fairway that must be thrown around. I used a ROC, thrown backhand with a good smooth hyzer that came in from the right and nailed the chains. It was my first ace. The course was a nice nine hole layout totaling 2269 feet with three hole in excess of 300'. I hope the university will consider installing a permanent 18 hole course. They have a great location for one, and there is not one in the Myrtle Beach area.

First and only (to date) ace on hole #1 of Epple Park in Greeley, CO. I would guess it is about 300 ft. to the basket which is hidden by a foot bridge. I threw my X-XL forehand and it took a low line right at the bridge. It looked too low to clear, but it went between the rails perfectly and skipped off the walking surface. I thought it would be a nice birdie shot until I got closer and saw it was sunk. It actually skipped about 30 ft from the bridge to the basket. As Duff Man would say "Oh yeah!" :D

Not my first ace, but it was my first ace this year...

Date: 3/3/04
Course: Brown Park (A2 MI)
Hole: #3 - 296'
Disc: Z Wildcat

Hole 3 is just under 300', and you're shooting blind to a hidden basket (tucked into a low area along the woods). I launched a gentle lefty hyzer with the Wildcat, allowing me to give it about 325' worth of arm and let the prevailing wind and hyzer turn do the work. The disc disappeared over the rise and a couple seconds later I heard that satisfying chain music.

Three weeks later I was crowing to the other members of my foursome how I'd aced the hole earlier, then stepped up and did it again...same hole, same disc, same flight. Deja vu!

1st ACE: 9-14-03
course: Alex Clark Memorial DG Park, McKinney, TX
hole: #18 - ~200'
disc: 3x JK-Pro Aviar-X 175g

My first ace came while warming up for a doubles round at Alex Clark Memorial in McKinney, TX. I was warming up, so every hole was an ace run :) I threw my 3x Aviar about 200' and hit so hard i thought there was no way it would stick. Nice floppy putter :) Too bad nobody saw it. I had been playing almost 2 years.

XS-Z
#4 - 238'
Grignon Park - Kaukauna, WI

Elevated tee (approx. 15') 90 degree dog-leg left with lots of trees. Elevated tee allows you to throw over the top of trees (at the beginning). After the dog-leg the fairway splits creating an island of trees and bushes. Plenty of trees to bring down your drive. A hole was cut through the woods to allow someone on the tee to see the basket so they don't tee off when the group ahead is on the green. I teed off with my XS making the turn just above the tree tops. My buddy said, "that's going to be good". When it went out of sight we turned to look down the hole. A couple of seconds later it came into view. It hit the ground about 5 feet in front of the hole. At that instant I was thinking, "great, an easy bird!" and then it bounced up like a tennis ball and came to rest in the basket. Very little use of the chains. I'd like to take a moment to apologize to the 3 guys that were teeing off on #2 behind me when I yelled "IT WENT IN, IT WENT IN!!!" I hope you threw a mulligan.

Not bad for someone who started playing last October.

My first ace came on July 5, 1991. Hole 19 at Warriors Path in Tennessee, 210 ft. The disc was a Barracuda. Remember them? Since then, hole 19 has felt the sting of the ching 12 more times at my hand. Nice bakers dozen. Career total of 114 and counting. One thing I'd like to pass on to all first time acers. Keep a list of your aces. I started mine that day and I'm glad I did. I keep a column for the date, course, distance, hole # and position, witnesses and type of disc. This is a fun thing to do.

Just hit my first ace today!! Went to two courses where there's a two-day this weekend. It was the first time I'd played this course and I stepped up to a 235 foot hole just dead straight but about 30-40 feet uphill. I threw a driver because of the incline (a Champion TeeBird, the one in my avatar) on a hyzer-flip that went right up the alley. It was going to be parked, but caught a rock and popped right in! A "1" on a scorecard looks so nice! Of course, that was my #1 driver and I promised myself I'd retire my first ace disc, so now I need to wear and tear at a Champion TeeBird tomorrow.

My first ace was at Bart in Austin Texas. Hole three(old course layout) with an XL(dx) about 5 years ago i believe...
Have a couple at Peace park and one at my home course in Victoria,Tx on hole #1. Never been lucky enough to sink one in a tourney :(

My first one i hit the ace pot at a mckinney, tx tournament for almost 250$
If any of you know Chris Pepperling, me and him split it! :D

Sep 01 2004, 04:38 PM
My first was a hyser with a CE Spyder Xout. I had been playing for about 3 months and played almost every day. My friends had just left on the last hole, and I wanted to finish up, so I ripped one straight into the chains. None of them saw it and I went running after them yelling "I JUST GOT AN ACE I JUST GOT AN ACE!!!". And that was the beggining of a long ace tradition!

For you guys who only have a couple aces or maybe have never got one, don't worry about it. I used to run aces so much, I had to learn how to birdie. Birdies are much better than aces.

Sep 02 2004, 06:47 AM
How in the world could a birdie be better than an ace?

Unless you mean a birdie in the hand is better than two aces up your sleeve.

Sep 02 2004, 06:09 PM
I just hit my 1st one today (sept. 2, 2004)
#12 at Will Rogers here in Oklahoma City. The hole is 200' with the basket being straight ahead of the teepad. The hole is bottle shaped, with the neck being at the teepad end, so it can be tricky getting past the first 50 feet because of trees. I used a 165g Z-X2, RHBH'ed it. It turned over a little and then came back, CHING. It was witnessed by 3 bums, who cheered me on too, (the proceeded to try to sell me disks that they found in the park) so I have witnesses :D

Not my first ace, but I got ace number six this week. A short <200' slightly down hill hole. I threw a QMS out to the left of it and watched it bend right perfectly. The really bizarre thing is that I actually never hit chains. It hit the side of the basket and squeezed all the way in through the hole and miraculously stayed in. :o

Little_Big_Mouth:

Great that your first ace was also for money $$$!
At my local, they have a tradition that anyone that sees the ace has to give you a dollar. Unfortunately, I think my local has the highest percentage of players who have already spent their dollars on 'something else.' So, of the eight or nine guys that saw my ace, I got about two dollars and six apologies for not having a dollar to give, plus a little bit of 'something else.'
It happened on my birthday, so that was payment enough for me. :D:D:D
Can't wait for the next one!

I've seen that with a blowfly, SE Rhyno, Swirl APX, and a PRO GAZELLE!! It's really funny to watch the thrower run at the basket full steam and pull it out before it falls out!!

Now have you ever seen a roller ace? There's a hole at my local course where there is a root about 6 feet infront of the basket and if you hit it just right, you can jump right into the basket. I've seen guys make it in from about halfway but never from the tee. The Hole runs about 255' long and its slightly bowl shaped. I saw a guy BH roller ace it with a Monster I gave him!! He had been working at it for the past 6 years!!

Good job Shane, congrats! I have a question though, why retire your ace discs? I know a lot of guys (including myself) that throw them, and have hit more than one ace with the same disc (that part is not including myself!!!). I know it is your first ace, but so what. You need to hit another ace with it. :D Oh, and start breaking in a new driver, in case you lose one!

Congrats again!!!

My 1st ace was a brand new 5 minute old SE leopard, an ace on the 1st hole on the first throw of a new disc, and it was the 1st ace on the new pin placement. DM4 I retired that disc after 1 throw, someday the signatures on that disc will be worth millions, FLOOD are you out yet?

Sep 08 2004, 06:53 PM
I just got my first ace this past weekend at our monthly course challenge. It was hole #12 at Pride Park. Only took about 3-1/2 years.

It was on a hole 99' long but 10' wide with trees.
Four holes later one of the other guys on the card hit an ace at 226'.

So in the end four hit aces and I only got $17. But, hey, it payed for the tournament and then some!

I just got my first ace today :)

Hillside Lions Park, Bismarck, ND, though I doubt many here have seen this course.

Hole #6, it's on a plateau-like hill, if you go too far, too left, or too right, you're in for a long roll down the hill. It's a par 4.

I threw my Z-Wasp and it went on a slight S-curve, straight through the only path through the trees. It hit the ground about 20 feet in front of the hole, did the trusty z-bounce, right into the basket.

I was playing alone, and my only witness was some old guy that was driving by in a Jeep who stopped and congratulated me.

It was pretty cool. :)

Congrats! Did you throw a jump putt, or did you pull out your trusty disc that does the "S" curve for you?

I like how the public par is 2, and the pro par is 3! Are there "pro" teepads? Is that what justifies the extra stroke?

I think it's really cool that a middle school has a disc golf course!

I've been playing for about 2-3 years and just hit my first ace. It was at Chandler Park, #6 (200ft), Tulsa,OK. I was playing in the Open division at a local mini, when I realized I didn't have my aviar. I played with a mid-range for two holes until a friend let me borrow his floppy aviar. I normally prefer hard putters, but, as they say, beggers can't be choosers. Hole #4, I nail the basket with a Firebird Hyser. #5 was a wash, and then I came to #6. This is a hole that I normally tomohawk for an easy birdie, but before I threw I remember that there was a $201 ace pot. I pulled out the borrowed aviar and threw it straight through a tunnel of trees and into the basket. I was so rattled after my first ace and the $201 that I only shot a -5, but you won't hear me complain.

It was yesterday actually!...I've been playing casually for years, and competitively for a year. #7 at Burnett Woods in Cincy. About 200 ft., downhill and partially gaurded. Threw an XD and it cruised right in there. By the tee, a lady was rocking her kid on the swing set...as it went in, I let out a scream, turned around and told her: "I got a hole in one!!!" She didn't seem to grasp the drama of having played over a decade and finally getting my first ace.

Oct 09 2004, 05:00 PM
I was playin w/my bro the other day out at the Grange (spotsy, va) and he aced hole #11 sunny side. sick. 320 ft over a hill, you can just see the top of the flag from the tee. as soon as he let it rip, it looked good. held a nice little anhyzer line before fading back. bro headed for bag as i watched it sail towards the pin and then heard a ching!! both our jaws dropped as bro ran over the hill to see his beast in the basket. threw his bag real high in the air and hootin and hollerin. awesome. first true ace on that hole. #6 for him (he's got me by 1 now)

I got my first ace at the 2004 Ace Race. Really lucky I guess. I grabbed a 173 and 175 of the "glide" and on hole 1 of the Rockwood course in Gresham, I threw the 173 and missed bad. So I threw the 175 and it scored an ace on my very first throw with that particular disc! I also just found out that my 1 ace and 1 metal hit was good enough to win!

Overall, not to bad for my first. It will probably never happen again. ;)

I threw an old 148 g Millinium EXP. I think the hole is about 200 feet. I don't play that course often enough. Crowley's Bi-centinial Park is one of the best courses in North Texas, and quickly getting better and better. Their course maintenance and city support is quite noticeable. When are they going to have a PDGA event there? Soon, I hope. :)

1997, Hole 15 @ Hawrelak Park, it wuz my first year of playing.....

The 'hole' is a 3 foot tall metal pipe which is about the same width as the post on most baskets (about 2 inches wide). The hole is slighty downhill and you have to cross a large pond - the post is located about 15 feet from the pond and the green area is quite small, so it can be a tricky hole if you mess up off the tee.

The shot went straight at it the whole way, didn't budge at all and *ding*. Only one disc does it quite like that - a good old ROC. I aced a hole in Canmore the next winter (about 350 feet downhill to what was at that time also a tone - all baskets now of course....) and then lost it on the first tee as we were leaving. Practice throws with lots of snow on the ground can really cost you...

Just got my first ace yesterday (11/16). Threw a 172 Champ Valk with a lazy hyzer on 220 ft #8 @ South Park in Glencoe, IL. Been playing since June of this year, heavily since August. An ace on this hole had eluded me for a while, although an easy ace for all my friends. It is a short easy hole anyway, but it was still my first. Completely unexpected, the shot just kept lookin better and better until it crashed in! Irony is that no one was around to see it. oh well... still excited anyways... :D

I had the pleasure to play Oak Grove about 5 years ago while on a business trip to LA. Bought a World's Biggest Cheetah from Joe in the parking lot, just to have a souvenir, didn't throw it much during the round. It was getting dark, I was on one of the last holes, (not sure which one, teed off near a building, went toward the parking lot, had a mando, I think) my drive disappeared into the darkness, then I heard the distinctive "Ching". I got all excited, ran down to the hole, only to find my disc lying under the basket. I was bummed. Went back home to Memphis, went out to Shelby Forest for our Wednesday night tourney a few days later, got hung up in traffic, the round had already started without me, bummed again! Decided to play a practice round on the back nine, pulled out the Cheetah I bought at Oak Grove on hole 14, and in it went, for my first ace in over 20 years of playing! No ace pot, no witnesses, but it was my first drive from the tee, and it went in! I felt electrified.
