Alright, this is the Battle of the Wisconsin players, who will come out ontop playing head to head this year in PDGA tournaments?? Barry Schutlz or Chris Heeren?
Barry might have a little advantage since he is 24-1 against me in the last 2 years but I think this year will be different!!

Barry Schutlz
PDGA#6780
Age: 34-35?
Throws: RHBH
Strengths: Worlds Best Disc Golfer
Titles: 03' world champion, usdgc champion ( may also have won a few other tournaments not mentioned )
Rating: 1039
Best rated round: 1092

Chris Heeren
PDGA#18464
Age: 23
Throws: RHBH
Strengths: I'm learning a forehand
Titles: 03' Putting world champ
Rating: 1006
Best rated round: 1056

Don't let the stats fool you! I think Barry's game has come down a bit this year, he already let someone tie him at a national tour!

!

you have a 1006 rating and your LEARNING a forehand. wow, thats impressive.

Mar 23 2004, 02:14 AM
Chris, I gave you my vote and then was shocked to see you had 4 votes instead of only two (mine and yours). To be truthful, I think Barry will kick your arse, but I like your attitude and I also like the idea that the guy not quite so good has a chance to leap forward and give the best a run for their money.

Looks like there are a lot of underdogs out here voting for you to beat the champ so that they can dream of doing so also :D

Mar 23 2004, 02:16 AM
If you can talk Barry into coming to Idlewild you might have a shot at beating him there, at least during the first round. Then again I wouldn't bet against him. :p

chris
Mar 23 2004, 02:21 AM
I dunno about that arse kicking thing, 1-24 isn't too bad. I think I just missed a few putts here and there! Could happen to anyone :D

Mar 23 2004, 02:28 AM
1 out of 24 -- at least you are on his radar screen. you are young too. odds suggest eventually you are going to overtake him. how fast that occurs is the open question. never give up. I am sure he would rather a Wisconsin player overtake him than someone less cheezy ;-)

I voted for Chris. I'm amazed at what this guy can do & he's only 23 and started playing in 2000. Wow!!

Mar 23 2004, 11:52 AM
I voted for Chris. I think Barry is way better and head-to-head would be no contest, but... Nobody tours like Chris. He is a true DG junkie. Barry will probably pick and choose his tourneys whereas Chris will play Championships to D-tiers and everything in between. Total numbers should fall to Chris.

I spent a fun afternoon with Chris "The Machine" Heeren at Pro Worlds 2003 in Flagstaff. He is simply one of the nicest guys you'll meet. He wasn't performing up to our expectations at the time, and he took a lot of grief from his Wisconsin crew in stride. Those guys were a riot - Chris “Ollie” Ollinger, Johnny Van Deurzen, Mike Schwieger, Mike Newhouse, "Dapper" Don Barrette and that little weasel Kris Bammert.

Mar 23 2004, 03:07 PM
That's right! Tower Ridge will be the first test! I think Barry might have an advantage there since that's where he shot his 1092 rated round but we'll see how it ends up :D

Chris, ya gotta beat me before you can get to Barry at Tower. Look at last years stats, I had ya by 11, and Barry had me by 10. That's alot of strokes bro! I witnessed his 1092 and it was SICK.
That being said, Barry got my vote.
"let someone tie him", hmmmmmmmmm I don't know how I should react to that statement Chris.

Chris,

Sorry but I am voting for Barry. I have seen you play and you definitely have picked this game up for sure. You are a potential future World Champ, but after a Triple Crown Season that Barry has had, I don't think he will be giving in anytime soon Chris. Good luck though! I like seeing any Wisconsin Pro whip some [*****] on the tour! Question: Did Barry play the putting event at worlds also?

Since I've played with you almost every weekend for a month you got my vote! Now go out there and do it! I'll be up at Tower Ridge to witness the initial battle first hand. I also heard Barry might be moving out of WI...is this true?

Apr 09 2004, 02:03 AM
I almost got him at his favorite Standing Rocks. On one hole in particular I carded a 5 and Barry carded a 2 and on the last 3 holes I went 3.. 4.. 3 and Barry went 2..3..2 that was probably my best chance at beating him in Wisconsin.
Unfortunately The Caro Crew wont be able to make it this year so just to pump you guys up..take it to him at the Rocks. I still luv ya Barry.

chris
Apr 09 2004, 12:03 PM
That -12 you shot on the East Course was pretty sweet! That probably will be the closest chance anyone will ever have at beating Barry at Standing Rocks! I only lost to him by 10? 15? strokes, we'll see what happens this year though :D

Apr 09 2004, 09:40 PM
Chris, just out of curiosity how do you and Barry compare in terms of distance? How far can each of you throw on flat ground with little or no wind?

Also, congratulations to you on the Innova sponsorship.

chris
Apr 10 2004, 12:23 AM
I'd say we throw about the same distance?!? His always lands by the basket if you want to get technical about it though. With no wind? I can consistantly throw about 450-460, I dunno what Barry can do. I know that beast goes pretty far for him though.

Apr 10 2004, 12:30 AM
[Barry's] always lands by the basket if you want to get technical about it though.

well, now that you're onto his secret -- just copy him. :D

Apr 10 2004, 12:49 PM
Just a note:.
I played alot of rounds with Barry throughout the entire 2003 year, most of them practice rounds. On a stretch from the Memorial through the GLO I never saw him miss a drive. On hole 15 at Hudson Mills, a 345 tunnel roc shot, he missed the fairway to the right by about 10 feet and hit a tree about 3/4 of the way down the fairway. As he grabbed another disc out of his bag he said " I havent done that in a while", and I said "what, hit a tree with your San Marino" and he said " no, I missed the fairway". All I could say was "WOW"..
I've never seen any one be that cosistant for so long. He digs deep and find the shot when he has to. Your right, he does find a way to get close to the basket on every shot, and when you do that you don't have to hit all of your putts. It's absolutely amazing. I feel fortunate to have witnessed such a year. He has had a long time to hone his skills. You are just getting started. Keep on pluggin!

By the way, I've never met a person from Wisconsin I didn't like...there is a guy at the park here [SoCal] who spends his WINTERS there! You've got to admire that!
...but how can you not like a 'culture' where the cops drive drunks home, people wear cheese on their heads, and they call drinking fountains "bubblers"?!? :D

Sorry chris I have to also go with barry on this one. Ever since I saw that shot on hole number 13 in the 2000 USDGC when he leaves his drive OB. Forced to redrive he plants it about 15 away from the basket!!! Now thats clutch. Even though you won the putting championship, being able to keep your head cool like that is how to win. I think in 3 years max you'll overtake him though as a combination of experience, his growing in age, and your development of the forehand shot. Can't wait to see a match up like Barry's and Ken's at the last USDGC.

well said Master Po. a grasshopper will always jump higher when the ego is not in the way. Chris started this thread tongue-in-cheek, and though it appears he does have high goals for himself, probably he'll keep his feet on the ground even if he were to outshoot Barry in: (drumroll)

Apr 16 2004, 04:44 PM
Confucius says: Man who stand on toilet - High on pot. I think Heeren has his feet firmly planted on porcelain if he thinks he can beat Barry. I've known Heeren for a long time now and he never ceases to amaze me -not always in a good way- but I think he's bitten off a little more than he can chew. Besides sooner or later he's gonna inhale a june bug with that gaping mouth putting form of his and choke to death.......

Barry to I guess!

Just like my second round yesterday .... Oooops!

The only birdie I got in the second round was when Barry called a foot foul on me for a warning and I had to re-tee. The first drive was 30 feet short with a tree blocking the putt; I parked the second drive 8 feet away. :D

Apr 19 2004, 11:22 AM
did someone second the foot fault?

axldog
Apr 19 2004, 11:36 AM
Not sure, but it was obvious that my foot print was 1 inch off to the side of the board. Not to complain, but it was a crappy dirt & sand tee box that had a dip in it and most of the board is covered with dirt & sand anyway. On pad like that I'm just hoping not to twist an ankle or knee or something .... missing the side of the tee pad by an inch or two doesn't really cross my mind. But "oh well", I benefited by the re-throw! :DNot that it matter at that point, I had already been on the bogie train for too long!

chris
Apr 19 2004, 04:25 PM
Yea, it was 2nd, I personally didn't see it but the other 3 guys did. I did notice you foot faulted by almost a foot on hole 6, I think they saw that too and that's why they called you on it the next time it happened. That was the first time I've ever seen anyone get called on it before!

Apr 19 2004, 05:30 PM
You have to admit that the tees were in rough shape and were not clearly marked. Remember on #3 when you could not even find the mark? You were standing right on it and you couldn't see it. It was there, burried.

Apr 19 2004, 05:41 PM
I can definitely second how crappy the boxes are. They should have a shovel and a rake by each hole. I don't think I would call a fault unless it was really blatant and gave them an advantage.

I forgive you Steve. Just don't pull that crap when you play me.

thanks, good luck and have fun in Bowling Green!

Apr 25 2004, 12:17 AM
God, this thing is getting out of control. Chris, you win some and you blow some for player rating points. Do you see any of the other top rated players collecting groupies on the PDGA wesite? NO!!! Play the game for what it is. A good player doesnt need others to tell him how good he is or how well he did at a tournament. I am sure there is no ill intentions but please, we all know at any time, any day, someone can beat the best, or be beaten by the worst, thats golf.
I think a little professionalism should be followed here on out.
Do your squawking at the end of the season not the beginning.

Keith -- it was cool watching you shoot the lights out during the fourth round and the final nine -- great job! Sounds like Kenny is going to see about hooking you up with Innova.

During his seventeenth hole of the fourth round, Barry was putting for a birdie on 18 from about 30 feet and right as he was releasing the disc, a car passed to the side of the basket and some kid in the back seat yelled "MISS!" really loudly out the window. Barry's putt just clipped the top of the Discatcher and fell. If Barry makes that putt, instead of a three way playoff for the fourth entrant into the final nine -- Barry would have been three strokes behind Ken and two strokes behind Cam and Keith going into the final nine. Stupid kid!

It will be great to see you again at the Michiana Open. I know you are primed to better your 14th place finish from last year.

I presume you will see Keith and Barry this weekend. If so, let them know we look forward to having them be part of the field and I don't have to remind Barry that Schweberger got him by one. Of course winning the $1000 winners-take-all best shot Final Nine was a nice bonus to a runner up finish. I'm sure he would love teeing it up infront of our huge gallery of spectators again this year.

See you soon.

WI has many good-great players and all the time we are adding more.

Barry is one of the main reason this area is producing better players all the time. His level of play is making all reach for more within themselves to play better.
He is a great ambassader for the sport in sportmanship, teaching and approachability.

If he wasn't as good as he is this thread never would exist.
His past and future accomplishments are only that the majority can dream of (I for one, lowly am, 908 rating).

I just wanted to make sure Barry's accomplishments and goodness weren't lost in this thread.

Haven't heard how Sinssippi went, unable to find anything on the web.

I just noticed that Keith and Chris both have 5 letters in their first name and 6 in their last. Last names both end in "REN".
One is a lefty the other a righty.
This has just been an observation nothing else.

Not only do they each have 11 total letters in their disc golf names, Contour Crew also has 11 letters.
Maybe they'll end up with 11 wins this year :D

You guys have way to much time on your hands! Sinnissippi was up and down for both of us. I was on lead card after first round and Keith was outta the cash, then he shot the course record and I shot my worst rated round of the year. He ended up taking 2nd, and I took tied for last cash! Chris Sprague won ( there were 3 Chris's on the lead card :) )

Alright, the PDGA season has come to an end for me and the results are in!! It was a very close battle and it came right down to the wire but in the end Barry edged me out 13-2 over the 15 tournaments we've played together . . . . maybe next year! :D Some how me and Keith ended up tied at 8-8, I think we'll have to have a play-off tournament at the 7th Turkey Shoot-out next month!

Hey Chris,

Congratulations on your victory this past weekend at the Camden Chaos event in Milan, Ill. It really is too bad that Keith and Barry couldn't have made it down to challenge you, but I guess that their absence makes you the winner by default, eh? Never the less, let me be the first to offer you a hearty "well done" and give you your proverbial "props"; after all, it's not every day that a player with a 1014 rating wins an unsanctioned tournament in the Advanced division!

Terry,

Do you want to team up and play Advanced at the Real Ice Bowl in Milwaukee? I will already be town to play in the Open division on Saturday, and since the event is unsanctioned, I think we might have a chance to finish in second place behind Chris and (insert name of partner here). I know that you and Mike Schwieger won the Open division last year, but I am going to assume that he has more class than to play down. Come on pal! Even though you are sponsored by Discraft, couldn't you use some more plastic?

Hey, Chris-- you do know that their 'congratulations' and 'props' were sarcastic, right? You know:

If an event is unsanctioned, there is no such thing as PDGA Advanced. All the rules can be changed as needed. If what they called the Advanced division was bigger than the Open division, it only makes sense for players to enter the division with the biggest ratio of potential payout to entry fee. Makes sense for a top player to come in and sweep up the big prize in Advanced and give those lower rated Open players a break. Maybe it will make TDs want to host PDGA sanctioned events and players to enter them where divisional guidelines are more closely followed.

HUH? I took WHAT BAIT? I posted about this particular topic far before you did.

This is NOT an Innova, Discraft, Gateway, or JoeSmhoe Disc Shoppe issue at all. I don't know where in the world your Discraft comment even comes close to resembling a connection here.

Anyway, regardless of who my sponsor is or who Chris' sponsor is, I certainly think that Innova would want to know why in the world Heeren would go and play advanced at any event.

This certainly links to the "Paying Ams Cash at Unsanctioned Events" thread and this is a perfect case in point why Ams shouldn't get cash. People like Heeren might hear that and show up to sweep the Adv division.

Let's take this a step further. Suppose an event was to have 50 ams at $30 entry. Then there was a 15 Pros at $50 entry. What would stop Barry from playing in the pool of $1500 in cash versus the $750 pool of cash? Don't say that "no top pro would ever do such a thing" because Heeren did it for reasons FAR LESS than listed in this example.

By the way Hamm, why ARE you swinging so hard on Heeren's sack?

its not a joke Knudsen is correct.I and at least 6 other ADV players played open since it was unsanctioned and was our home course. It was 1st round longs, with your regulaur discs, then 2nd round was a Fly By Nite glo disc only. You could also use a putter within 50 ft but no other drivers. It was a great tournament and had a great showing.Great job to all that helped out raking tees, running the show and thanks for the great time especially hole 18!! I have to say that although I respect his game , I didnt really respect the decision he made to play adv. and thought it was funny that almost all the area ADV players played open, and the tourney was won by a adv player that was playing open.It was a fun tourney though regardless of the drama.I did feel bad for the INT players that played ADV, although Heerens running mate {one of the best ADV players I know, a person easily capable of playing pro} probaly would have won adv. anyway.

Looks like another thread that jumped to conclusions before hearing the whole story. Is this the Cam Todd suspension thread? :D

discglfr
Nov 02 2004, 12:30 AM
What do you mean "jumped to conclusions"? It was a tournament where golfers played against one another with actual divisions offered and Chris Heeren played in an amateur division. Even if the event called for playing with paper plates, Heeren should still be competing in the PRO division. One does NOT accidentally fall into a 1014 rating.

I'm not lashing out but do DweLLeR are you suggesting that Chris Heeren should NOT have played OPEN?

chris
Nov 02 2004, 12:38 AM
Alright, well I told Dan that he should play open on the drive down there. He's been bagging all year and hasn't played open yet even though he's rated 965. He was rated higher than every pro out there and he still didn't want to go pro and play against me. I told him as a joke that if he played advanced that I would do it also just so he wouldn't win. I don't think he believed me and did it anyway, so as a joke I told the TD to sign me up as advanced too. I was expecting him to say, "uh, no sorry you gotta play open", but he actually said "sure, no problem" hahaha. ( I can't actually believe a TD would do that, Terry's right, people like me would take advantage of it :D ) None of the other pro's really seem to make a big deal outta it and I thought it was funny as hell :) I really didn't go down there to make any money, I just wanted to play and have fun! It actually turned out to be fun as hell! I got to meet some new people that I've never played with before and I got to witness a 30 circle 60+ score on a single hole! Where else would you get to see that other than in advanced lol ( Also I wanted to out do JJ at bagging ) :D

Did he play open or adv? Whether or not your bashing me is inconsequential.....the sarcasm left by others on this thread lead me to think they may have been jumping to conclusions. Chris can play any division he wants, again, inconsequential, to me. Sounds like it was a pretty cool time with the limits that were played.

Nov 02 2004, 01:09 AM
Now your beginning to sound like the 'old' me. I hated the fact these pro/should be pro players play down and kick the snot out of adv players. But it was unsanctioned, so what!

I used to think like this. I no longer do. We (adv) have the choice to play with the big boys or keep our balls tucked in and play adv. Now, the PDGA is or possibly considering, letting Pros with <955 ratings to play in adv. Better get used to it.

A wise person told me a few months ago to 'stop whining about others game and concentrate on your own!' (props to John Cavaletto for setting me straight)
