I've been a Disc Golfer for about 4 years now. One day I mentioned disc golf to my landlord, & he got excited and started talking story about how he used to play back in the early 90s and about much better the object course at University of Hawaii used to be before someone threw their driver through a window.
Anyways, since discs were/are hard to come by here in Hawaii, apparently he bought a whole bunch of discs to sell about 10 years ago. And most of them didn't sell.
He pulled out this tub full of unused relics such as Phoenixs, Tracers, Vortexs, Whamo 71, 91, and 86 molds, an Aviar with a flying eagle stamped on it, and many more.
Question, I grabbed this Roc from the tub (see image below). I was wondering if any of you Roc Historians can identify it, and whether or not it should be thrown, hung on the wall, or should it make its way to Ebay or Trader's Row??? It has never been thrown, but it does have some scuffs from 10 years of storage & being banged against other discs in the tub. I figure that before I huck it into a tree with tape (The Hawaiian Mach 3), I might as well find out its history.
The color of the digital photo is a little off, the disc is actually a dark dayglowish pink. The disc probably hails from the mid 90s, and it has the "Discovering The World" writing on top as part of the stamp (in case the image is hard to decipher). The bottom of the disc says "INNOVA-CHAMPION DISCS INC. SAN MARINO, CA. 91108-8368". Does this make it a "San Marino" Roc instead of a "Rancho" or "Ontario" Roc??? If so, what are its flight charactaristics vs today's Rocs???
If this one ends up on the wall or in the hands of a collector, no worries, my landlord has 2 more. But this one was the nicest.
Thanks, Jordan

I would concur, you probably want to save/sell that one. The deal with San Marino rocs is simply that when rocs were made in San Marino California the plastic was perfect. The discs go where you throw them very cleanly. They are slow by today's standards but really reliable. A new one usually sells for like 50 to 90 bucks. The heavier the more coveted.
im not at the right computer ..video is kinda blurry on this one...ill be on the good vid card later...if you could possibly get a pic up of the underside...specifically the center of underside...i should be able to define it rather easily....might not need it if i can get the other comp hooked up...i can usually tell just by color but this vid card is the suck..but at any rate the underside is true determining factor

While I agree the disc is awesome, it is not going to fetch much more than $50.00 on Ebay. Its value as a collectable far exceeds what it will fetch on the open market. What you have there is most likely a Rose Glow San Marino DTW Roc. I have one in my bag. The Pink Plastic glowed, albeit poorly, when they came out. I sell alot of goods on Ebay to supplement my disc golf habbit and have sold heavy San Marinos of equal value for $40.00 to $55.00 this winter. Occasionally one will collect two buyers interst and they will bid it up beyond its value, but as a whole you have a discs that is woth more off paper than on.

Sounds like he bought a lot from DTW. The Eagle on the Aviar, and this Roc were Dan's stores stamp. I agree, other than the Football stamp, this is the best original Roc out there.
I don't recall this mold coming in Pink Lady glow plastic, the retooled one did. Easy enough to figure that out, charge it up and turn out the lights.
The other guys are right, $50 all day long on eBay. Football stamp, heavy weight, will get close to $100.
I throw one of these, it's 168g, great mid range straight flyer.

WOW, that is awesome. That disc has to be worth some change. Being a roc fanatic, i know i wouldn't mind having one of those classics on the wall.

so the old san marino rocs are different than todays? I have an old one from about 91 or so that has the big bird stamp on it and says san marino on the inside. (I don't have it with me or I would be more specific) It was for the longest time my go to disc and might get put back in the bag very soon as the new ones seem to be more overstable (probably because it's so beat)

I believe the original Roc was run b/t '87 and '88. These were shaped like the Classic Roc of today, an XD with a bead. Yours is a retooled Roc, which is also a great disc.
Hey Everyone,
Thanks for all the advice & heads-up!!!
The weight of the disc is 180. I guess that makes the disc more collectable???
Chainchomper: I took 2 pictures of the underside (see images below). Maybe this will help you identify the Roc.
My landlord has 2 more of these Rocs in his tub. If I can get a hold of them (and they're in good enough shape to hang on my wall), I might put this one on ebay. Wish me luck.

jordan, you have a PM from me.
im guessing 90-91 by what i can see of the color..still on the bad vid card machine....and the underside would support that guess...nice find jordan...if hes got a few ..you would do well to get them and sell/collect/throw them...that disc will last you a long time and be a dependable disc for years to come...i have a gray aviar first ever hawaii stamp i might be willing to part with ..its sexy...i got it in 95 from jim when he came to worlds in texas...whatever you choose its a great find none the less

The original Roc didn't go up to 180g. You've got a nice retooled San Marino Roc. Value goes up because of higher weight. These do last for ever, I'm still playing with one I started using in 1990.
first disc i ever bought was a 1990 roc...i bought in 91...it lasted me ten years until one very cold day , i hit the "billy tree" full force..ruined my day for sure..but luckily by then i had learned the value of it and was already stocked with some backups...i still have 3 or 4 of these in my bag at all times.
did that guy get any of the first hawaii stamps...i only have the one but would love to get one or two out to friends...one of the best looking stamps ive ever seen and certainly one of the only "new aviars" (lol 95 new..im getting old) that i have continually displayed since the day i brought it home.

Kid must have taken your advice - he is bidding on one of my old school San Marino's that I put up last night :D
I'm sorry this just makes me feel old...San Marino roc is NOT old school. It is still a "new style" roc, as opposed what what I call "old school" and that is one of the peach colored rocs we call "old style rocs" from the early to mid 80's.
And yes I started playing Frisbee golf with a actual Frisbee!
Not that I want to go back there.....

Does anyone know what this Roc is worth....
It is an Ontario with a "Boobs" stamp. mint, yellow, 179 grams.
This disc was spoken of on the 2003 Worlds DVD. During the fly mart section he showed it and described it.
Thanks.

kid roc,
Ontario Roc's sale on eBay in a range b/t $15 and $30. This stamp my bring more. A disc is worth what someone will pay for it, that's what a guy told me a long time ago. That wasn't helpful.

Yep, I know what Ontarios go for I was just wondering if this stamp meant anything more.
Yessir..I have one in my bag with a RADL stamp and a "naked" one haging on my wall and the naked one is extremely rare....but I guess I'll throw it when the RADL one leaves me.
