What does everyone think? I usually use a TeeBird when in need of an overhand throw, but have really liked using the Orc to tomahawk as well in the limited time I have played with one.

How about everyone else?

Mar 21 2004, 10:38 PM
teebird is ok, but for real distance and accuracy you need to use a light Firebird or Monster

Mar 21 2004, 10:43 PM
174g blue CE Firebirds amazing throw about 250-300 feet with mine!

I throw an old Whippet for my Tomahawk, accurate out to 250'. Starfire for my Thumber. Same distance, hurts my old bones to throw those shots any further than that.

Mar 22 2004, 12:20 AM
St..T youre using a much too heavy disc, its only hurting your arm/shoulder when you throw anything over 172 imo...i can throw a 169 firebird 350+ on flat ground with no wind..gimme a good tail wind and i can rip em alot further. try a lighter disc and see what happens, your shoulder will thank you in the long run

Hmmm. that means you should've had a "less than 25 foot" putt on 20 of every 24 holes at The Memorial. (Since they are all 375'.) Shouldn't you have been shooting like -10 per round? :D

I have a friend who throws mostly Tommys and Thumbers and he loves his Champion Monster. I personally like throwing an Orc (still learning it though) or a Champion Eagle.

I know you asked about Innova discs but my favorite tommy disc is a beat Z-Talon. And if you throw it for tommys, it gets beat and flies far and well for me.

Make sure that "discism" does not limit the wide range of plastic availible to you as it does for so many in our sport. I have dream that one day Innova plastic and Discraft plastic and all plastic of the world (even Lightning plastic) will be able to join together in a golf bag without snide remarks and rude stares. Sorry about that...kinda got off track.

Happy tomahawking!

preach on brother max-- i have innova, discraft, and gateway in my bag. for long tommys- i use a 160 speed demon. shorter i go with a z-wasp.

Mar 22 2004, 03:17 AM
I used to use a 150 10x KC Banchee. For some reason, the banchee fit best in my hand. I also liked the S Speed demon untill I thumbed it too high and it cracked on a road!

Now, its usually my X Wildcat that gets the duty...i'm searching for that perfect thumb disc again

Mar 22 2004, 04:42 AM
as a dedicated tomohawk thrower...here's what I use
250-300"--CE firebird 173 or pro line beast 172
low ceiling 150-200"---CE leapord 170
skip off the back 75-100"---KC 10x firebird...(I think its 10x?)
very quick corkscrew under 150"---polaris 147
all extremley accurate

Mar 22 2004, 08:54 AM
I tend to throw tomahawks alot to keep my score descent at castle pain (hayne).

Best innova discs i would say is the firebird and or banshee. I perfer to to use an elite X Xtreme for tomahawks and an old beat to hell polaris LS for thumbers. I was using a champ firebird till I started using the Xtreme. Its all in personal preference, doesn't really matter the disc as long as its over stable and you learn how it throws for you.
\my 2 cents/

Mar 22 2004, 09:05 AM
I would consider that a tomahawk is a strong part of my game. There is nothing like it for getting out of trouble, over stuff, skipping off the back etc..I have had luck with starfires and beasts but my one true tomahawk disc is an old dx teebird. It less "domey" than any dx teebird ive seen over the past 2 or 3 years and nothing is really like it. I consistently can pull out bombs with it but ill be damned if i ever lose that thing.

Hey Steve,

We have missed you (And your #2 tag) the past few weeks. I'll be out at 4:00 Wednesday and Friday this week if you want to play.

I have not tried my Z-wasp for a tommy yet but I like the idea. The speed demon haas not yet madeit into my bag but since by Talon "disappeared" I need a new tommy disc and may try it next time out along with my Monster.

I know I'll get bashed for saying this but try an Epic for your overhand shots. You will be amazed at what this thing can do on those overhand throws. It absolutely sucks for anything else but it's the BOMB overhand!

Mar 22 2004, 12:34 PM
I use a CE Teebird T 167 G, works well for me, I've also used Firebirds in the past but always resort to my Teebird because of its reliability.

I throw Banshees and Firebirds for overhand shots. I get more distance with the firebird and more accuracy with the banshee.

Slowmo- My friend who used to pitch professionally (minors) and has a huge arm for overhand throws uses an Epic at times he tosses it into the wind and watching that thing barrel-roll and then fly stright to the basket is amazing. He only throws it into the wind because otherwise it doesn't work for him. Worth the price of admission to watch though.

Do any other discs do a barrel roll and then fly straight?

Mar 22 2004, 05:01 PM
ive gotten a Dragon to "barrel" roll, but it doesnt go nearly as far as the epic

Mar 22 2004, 07:48 PM
kc banshee, best tommy disc EVAR. that sob goes and goes and goes. its the only innova disc i own

Mar 23 2004, 12:36 AM
I have thrown a spirit for thumbers with some success, but I have thrown every disc in my bag for tommys only to have them go straight up and straight down. Needless to say I'm still baffled by the concept of the tomahawk....

Mar 23 2004, 03:38 AM
sounds like your releacing to early

Mar 23 2004, 09:24 AM
stupidgoes...if tomahawks are going straight up and down for you try releasing them with a little bit of an angle, i.e. around 10 or 11 o'clock. They should flip then but it does depend on the disc. Some just don't want to do it.

probably not throwing them with any angle or fast enough..one of the two

Mar 23 2004, 02:33 PM
i throw them pretty good but last week I had a first I threw my kc 11 time banshee 166g and without even thinking i threw it tomahawk into the wind it went up and like froze in the air i could almost read writing on it it was so still then i thought crap it is going to come down 15 feet in front of me. but to suprise me even more it started coming down diving right at me and landed 20 feet behind me for my first ever boomarang backwards tomahawk. I was trying to throw over a tree pretty close to me so it was somewhat of a straight up release but I still can't believe it. It was last week on tuesday whe we got that blizzard here in michigan so it was windy

Dec 06 2004, 02:41 PM
once upon a time i threw my ce valk(172) about 250-300',after a while i switched up to ce eagle (171), now recently i have been using the orc(172 and 175) distance is about the same as the old ce valk.accuracy is better with the valk though.i also have a friend who depends heavily on the overhand throw. he threw an epic last summer for the first time and wow, bombs away. that thing corkscrewed forever. he normally throws giant bombs anyway. if you count the tomahawk, hammer, overhand throw as a tool in your bag try the epic

Dec 06 2004, 03:11 PM
I have heard (and seen) that it's not very predictable coming out of the "corkscrew" so you never know which way it will go.

slowmo_1
Dec 06 2004, 03:33 PM
the epic has always come out of the corkscrew going in the direction that I threw it for me. I finally took it out of the bag though. Not really enough long distance overhand throws at my local courses for it to work on anything but the strength of my back.

Dec 06 2004, 03:44 PM
best innova thumber disc would either be a champion firebird or a champ tee bird and around 169 grams

I personally have been using a 10x KC Banshee

veganray
Dec 06 2004, 04:00 PM
I use a DX Banshee for something I want to glide a while before "corkscrewing", or a super-beat DX Eagle if I want it to go up & straight down, "corkscrewing" immediately.
