We're going to try this soon, and I was wondering what everyone would elect to use if playing. Feel free to vote and comment on why you voted as you did, and which disc you would use. I think I know what I am going to use, and that made me think to throw this out here.

hawk man, that question needs refining. if i was playing at calvert, it would be a roc or maybe an aviar. but most courses i would use a nice straight tbird or valk. i can make those discs do most anything, and you would have a big advantage in the long holes over someone choosing a short disc.

Personally, a mid-range is still going to shoot lower scores for me no matter whether I'm playing a 5,000 foot course or a 10,000 foot one. I'm still going to gain strokes on more accurate drives/approaches and stronger putting versus a driver even though I may give up distance on the drives.

Have YOU ever tried putting with a driver?!?

If the course was short enough (e.g. Calvert short tee pads to short pin placements) I would use a putter over a mid-range.

course length is a major concern for this question. I've played in one of these that was a putter challenge that was a blast. If it had been a longer course that might have been a problem. I didn't mind to much since I can throw an aviar about 260. Were it a pretty long course I would definately want a buzzz

A friend and I played a night round on a 7000' course with one midrange each. He used a glow Roc, I used a Photon Wasp. Worked out nicely.

I'd go with the Wasp, because I can throw it a little farther than other midranges, but I can still putt pretty well with it.

Recharge it? Even though the Wasp glowed a lot longer than the Roc, I still zapped it with a camera flash every few minutes. I wanted to keep mine at maximum glow, in case I shanked one into the weeds or something (which I did).

I've played the beast with a only a tee bird and a roc. after that experience, I would definately choose a driver. As long as the course was not a peepee course, I feel a driver would be a huge advantage. Also, after that experience, I've concluded that someone using a driver with true forehand/backhand skills would have a big advantage in a one disc tourney on a real course.

Bring it midrange ladies. I can out putt you guys with a driver all day long. That's basically why you choose mid ranges. You're already afraid to putt.

It isn't that hard to putt with a driver. Just make sure that if you go for a putt to hit some part of the basket.

I'm with Mr. Hysell on this one ... driver all the way, especially at Patapsco.

The Flying Squirrels/Bucks County Disc Golf Alliance at Tyler State Park in Pennsylvania have an annual "One and Done" tournament every year in which you play one round of 27 holes with just one disc. Unfortunately their website is being redesigned and tournament results from the last several years are no longer available. The results did conveniently list the disc and weight that every participant used.

I do remember that Joe Mela (PDGA #2607, 1002 rated player) won Open several years in a row and placed second last year using the same disc every year: an old and very beat Discraft XL. Most of the other top placers wisely used a mid-range disc.

Actually the course has changed quite a bit over the life of the results of that tournament. Tyler used to be notoriously tight wooded holes but over the last 3-4 years the guys that maintain it have morphed it into a world class course. The setting is tremendous. It's a big state park and old stand forest. Lots of huge oaks mixed in with pines/etc.

Anyhow, it does appear that the successful strategy on that course is to use a midrange, but if you want to win, use a driver. ;) jk

Or be a world champ. Mela's not exactly your average XL thrower. Jake beat him last year in the snow. (Jake's a mutant though - throws a Rhyno distances most don't get with . .. well most just don't get.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the course is normally set up for that tournament with most holes in the 'A' or 'B' positions...which translates to mostly ~250 - 300 foot straight shots down tight tree-lined alleys. You could see how an accurate mid-range disc would be superior for these holes and this tournament over a driver, which would be more difficult to keep straight during the middle part of its flight and would tail off hard at the end of its flight.

Throwing a driver might work this time of the year, since the foliage is not there. Tyler gets pretty tight in the summertime, but for now, there are still plenty of gaps.

However, still gonna bring the buzzz :D

Feb 25 2004, 11:29 PM
Don't really know what's the normal layout. I just know I only make it to Tyler once or twice a year and wish I could get up there more. When I started going I used to love coming out of the woods into the few open throws - now it's just the opposite as they've really gotten the fairways to be much more fair.

I know - we should move to another thread.

I'd always throw a midrange because of all the reasons said - but I really don't throw a driver that much farther than a midrange disc. It gets there a bunch faster - just not that much farther.

This year it looks like I'll get to throw a Photon Wasp . . . I just didn't want to spend all day looking for it last year in the snow.

Jeff - you playing?

Looks like you would DNF Danny. In 99 there were 2 guys listed with DNFs and 'broken disc' at the bottom. One was a Comet and the other a Cyclone (no, really? a broken Cyclone?) :)

BTW, I would throw a Ram, regardless of the course or conditions. But that's just me.

We finally got around to doing this today. A small turn-out, but still interesting.

Copied from the Maryland Amateur Tour thread.

GLEN WINS ONE DISC CHALLENGE

Three of us braved the gloomy skys and sprinkles to finally try this out at Druid Hill today. We played from the metal tees. Scores were:

Glen-56 (KC Roc)
Paul-60 (Champion Viking)
Hawk-68 (Champion Spider)

Paul looked like he was going to prove Rich's theory about the advantages of using a driver in this kind of thing early on by deucing #1. He didn't seem bothered putting with the Viking, and approaching with flick shots. It was going so well on the front nine for Paul, he vowed to play his next Druid tourney with just one disc and wearing his Mexican wrestling mask if he came in under par. Glen and I started to think we were actually going to get to see that! By hole 4 Glen was convinced Paul had made the correct disc choice. #6 was when things got challenging for all of us with three off the mark drives. Glen did park #7 for a deuce. Scores on the front nine were: Paul 27, Glen 28, Hawk 31.

I quickly took fives on #'s 10, 11 & 12 to remove myself from contention. Glen and Paul were only one stroke apart until #15 when Paul's drive hit the screen to the left of the tee, and then his second shot put him in the cluster of trees to the right. He ended up taking a five to Glen's three, and on #16 he took a 4 while Glen recorded his second deuce of the day.

We all agreed that it was refreshing and fun to just walk and throw a disc without dealing with the bags and disc selection decisions that go on in normal rounds. It was reminiscent for each of us when we began playing.

Also Druid is looking really good right now with all of the trees blossoming. The back nine has to be the prettiest stretch of holes in the state. The work to resurrect the ponds is proceeding, and also there are about 15 trees on the course waiting to be planted. I hit two of them. One during our round, and another in a solo round prior to our experiment when I shot a 56 using my whole bag, which Glen matched using one disc.

Coming soon will be the putter only challenge!

I would probably play buzzz but could see how you could do well with a straight driver like an XL, Viking, or Valk. But I couldn't use a driver because I can't putt with a power grip and can't get comfortable with a fan grip on a driver.

1. Champion Gator
2. Z Buzzz (if the course had significant length)

The Gator would be more versatile in my mind, since I can throw it both backhand and forehand comfortably and with decent distance. The Buzzz wouldn't hyzer as well thrown forehand (and my forehand is five times better than my turnover).
