It's that time to vote for the 2003 DiscNut Disc of the Year and the 2003 DiscNut Best New Disc in an Existing Mold. Last years winners were the Gateway Wizard and the Millenium Q-JLS. Vote in the poll for the best new disc and post your favorite for the best new disc in an existing mold (an example would be the Gateway E-G1i or the Champion Valkyrie). I will run this poll until the end of the Ice Bowl season, February 15th.

I was looking at an Aerobie Arrow up close today...this is just a larger version of their (Aerobie's) 'dog' disc!

Champion Aero.
I can't imagine anything other than a Speed Demon winning this. The Beast and Buzz are good discs, but neither was a groundbreaking piece of plastic like the Speed Demon is.

Good call xterramatt!! How come the Aero didnt make the list, was it released after the new year? Or before? I thought is was before.

Maybe I haven't been paying attention, but I haven't heard this at all. Is this just your opinion or is it the general consensus of most everyone on this board? If the Speed Demon is truly a "groundbreaking piece of plastic" then I need to get me a bunch and try them out.
Knowing Howard, the Speed Demon is prolly just the first disc he threw over 300 feet. :D

Biggest vote on a poll I have seen yet. The Beast is outdriving the competition, just like in real life! :D
Anyone who didn't vote for the Beast, probably hasn't thrown one. ;)

I've wanted to try a speed deamon for a while. I can't find one on ebay or anywhere. Anyone know a website where they are selling them?
BTW I vote for the beast! :D

My friend got an arrow. WE call it the 'dog dish.' Flies straight but drops right out of the sky. Oh yeah, my vote goes to the Starfire.
I've thrown the beast and didn't vote for it. It became unpredictable after some abuse which is why I voted for the more stable viking instead.
EddieOG - Go to www.gdstour.com. (http://www.gdstour.com.) This is the Gateway site and you can order anything you want off of it. I also keep a rather large stock of Gateway products so if you would rather buy some off of me then just let me know.

If you throw forehand, the Speed Demon is a must-have. I've had two, 164 &165g, in the Evolution series plastic. When new, they're incredibly overstable, and land with a cartoonish skip every time. Once you get the hang of the Speed Demon, mid-to-long right turning holes are a cinch (relatively). New ones will also fly very close to the ground. Think 300 feet at knee height. Of course, by the time you've gotten the hang of your first Speed Demon, it won't be new anymore. The plastic is tough, but when you hit stuff, you hit HARD. A very beat Speed Demon is a good long turnover driver. I've put my older one a little over 400 feet forehand, which is the farthest I've thrown. This weekend, though, I put it off a cliff into a tree-filled ravine at dusk. It will be missed.
You can get Speed Demons straight from Gateway (www.gdstour.com) or from Disc 'n' Dat Online (www.discndatonline.com).

3 out of 10 times, the Beast will give me an absolutely amazing shot. Not such great odds for the course.

Okay, this makes much more sense now. Dan Howard throws almost exclusively forehand.
Has anyone had any success throwing a backhand Speed Demon? Is it useful at all? If it's just very overstable, that's not what I am looking for in a disc.
The only disc I heard people raving about last year was the Beast. A lot of folks got a lot of distance with this disc, it seems. I made the mistake of getting two 174g Beasts which were overstable and did not fly any farther than any other similarly overstable disc. I had plans to pick up some lighter ones to get some "S curve" and extra distance but those plans never materialized. Sounds like the lighter discs were somewhat inconsistent (and maybe too susceptible to the wind?)

Jeff, I used to throw the heavy Beasts, but since have crawled down to the 168-170 range for all my Beastlike drivers. (Beast, Starfire, Orc). I get a better shot with a little hyzer, It'll either square up or turn over a little. It takes a while for the disc to get to flat or turnover, so you will get great accuracy and good glide. I am getting awesome accurate distance with this setup. Might help you out.

I bought my first DX Beast in November of "2002"...it had a very small '03 Ice Bowl stamp, was 175g and impressive...especially after the second throw took a huge chunk out of it...was VERY straight and long after that!

I see the Buzzz is doing very well in the poll. For a mid-range disc to be doing so well says something about the disc. IMO the Buzzz is the best mid range disc I have ever thrown. Very straight and controlable. Not too fast, not too slow. Just feels good in the hand! So flat, so grippy, just money! Just my 9293 cents.

Tim your absolutely right about the BUZZ by far one of the best new discs i have seen in a while. Man Discraft sure knows how to make good products.
And no Innova nut jockers can say that Discraft stole or used one of their molds. :D

Nerd
Not to disagree, but the Buzz is a modified Wasp, which is basically a Roc. It not like they re-invented the wheel with the mold (which I happen to love) I point this out as a guy whose bag is 75% Discraft and 25% Innova.
I'm a 50%-50% guy myself; however, I don't think that Buzz is basically the Roc. Not unless Innova started selling the Roc in good plastic at the very beat stage. Your right, they didn't invent the wheel but it is one of the best molds to come around imho.

id have to say the monster
Beast= ROLLER
thats all its good for for me
its all about the orc, i love them and this 158 orc i got is surprisingly overstable. and goes like a bat out of He double hockeysticks
And the BUZZ, soo good, so striaght, so accurate, now if only i could learn to throw properlly, the disc might be of some use for me :D
The Beast is THE golf disc of the year!!
I presume we are on 2004 now...
Anyway, for me it would be the Flash, a great driver for weenie arms. But thinking about it, what was my best score in 2003? 56 at Hoover/Hambrick (short tees). And with several great new discs in 2004 (Flash, Buzzz, Wasp, Orc), what did my best score turn out to be? Uh, 55. Oh, welI -- I finally shot my age! Match that, you youngsters! ;)

But is this a thing for new disc of the year? If so, why are some discs listed in different plastic that has been on the market for some time now? (Otherwise I'm guesinng you meant new molds AND new plastics for existing molds)
