It's time to give some mad DG props to all those **** good TD's out there who bust there butts to give us excellent tournies to lose our money at.
My vote for best TD ever is.....
Doug Peyton, From Cedar Rapids IA.
He runs the best tournies ever. Ask anyone who has ever been there, they will agree.
I have more suggestions for good TD's, but lets see what else flows from yall.

You know I wanted to start this thread before, but never got around to it. And you know what? I wanted to say that DOUG PEYTON from Cedar Rapids, Iowa is without a doubt the best TD ever!!!! He certainly runs the very best events in the Midwest. The Cedar Rapids Open (formerly: Gotta Have My Disc Golf Jones) and The Legion of Doom are his events, and they are not to be missed.
Can you say "Added CASH"?? How about lunch cooked to order? He also has some of the best tournament staff in the country.(Trish, Candy, Aaron, KJ, Benda and more.) These tournaments are also supported by all the members of the Cedar Rapids Disc Golf League. He also runs the weekly league in Cedar Rapids with over 80 players per week. And, to top it off, he usually wins his own events! (Ok, as a master this last year.) I can't even play in my own events, let alone win them! How about the temporary course he single handedly designed and put in for last year's Legion of Doom??? I hope that can be permanent, as I would put it as one of my top ten courses! Doug has also stepped up and ran some of the Iowa City tournies in past years. I just can't say enough. HE IS THE MAN!!!!
Note: Added money is now at Legion of Doom in the spring.

I'm trying to remember which TD it was that had a $30,000 hole-in-one during one of the largest disc golf weekends of the year (182 AMs and 127 Pros)?
Or which TD it was that donated over $40,000 to the Lance Armstrong Foundation via his tournaments?
Oh, that's right...Chris Himing.
There really isn't another TD in all of disc golf who has done more positive work for disc golf, the disc golf community, and the public perception of disc golf than our Texas-adopted Australian friend.
The rest of this thread is really about who might be the 'second' best TD in the country.
Go ahead, lay your facts out if you think your guy did better. I'll bet you dimes to nickles your guy (or gal) doesn't match up. The free beer at every event is just a bonus (as are the Hooters girls serving lunch at many of his events).

Dosen't he make money by organizing DG events? He has a BIG advantage because that's his job, whereas most other TD's LOSE money promoting and organizing DG events. If DG was big enough to support multiple full- time promoters and TD's then I think he would have some more competition.
From a non- texan standpoint he is at the top of the list, but partially because of the reason I mentioned above.
Pizza God
Jan 01 2005, 09:23 PM
Actually, because Chris put so much back into his tour and his main sponsor cant sponsor (they way they have sponsored inthe past) because of TABC. Chris is taking a year off from running the Texas 10 events.
What is going to happen is several of us local TDs will be running our local Texas 10 with Chris's guidance to keep the events going this year. This will give Chris time to pay off some debts and look for a title sponsor again.
But I will say that Chris raized the bar for Texas Tournaments. All tournaments are compaired to his now.

Jan 02 2005, 02:21 AM
Doesn't he make money by organizing DG events?
Well, that is the theory, but like many others before him, he has discovered that disc golf alone won't pay the bills, and corporate sponsorship is hard to come by.
What he has done is over the past few years has been signifigant. His tour has donated enough money to the LAF to get noticed. Though his tour is largely unsanctioned, it has introduced a large number of the current touring PDGA players in Texas to competitive disc golf and produced many quality players that may have never gone to a tournament without the TX10 to get them started. This has led to other TDs starting largely unsanctioned series of events as well, and I hope that those are equally successful at increasing PDGA membership in Texas.

Rooster I would say that you are right if this was the best TD of the past 2 or 3 years, but it is "Best TD ever!" and I would like to nominate John Houck. I think the facts lead further up the Disc Golf Family Tree than you are going. Although some TD's are certainly getting close to running as many events as he has, he still has a few more events under his belt than anyone else.
I suggest that you check out the history of Disc Golf in the State of Texas as well as in the USA. You will find that he did more for the sport in Texas than you are giving credit for. In fact it is likely that the Texas 10 would not exist if it weren't for Houck employing Chris when he came to the USA. Not to mention supplying Chris with much of the plastic he has paid out in the events. And furthermore the fact that Chris helped operate several of the Circular Productions events while he was employed there must have had an influence on the way he runs events himself.
It is very likely that Houck designed some of your favorite courses in TX. The Innova Course Installation brochure states that he has designed over 50 courses. I think that number has to be a bit low, but the bulk of them are in Texas. I would go so far as to say that he designed more courses in Texas than any other designer.
He ran the Pro World Championship 2 times, 1994 and 1995, and almost got roped into it again until The HFDS said they would take it on in 2002. That is two events that last over a week, not just one or two days.
He was the first person to run a tour, starting back in the 80's, that's right I have a Circular Skies Over Texas Tour stamped disc from 1987. The Circular Skies Tour was the first series of it's kind in Texas and likely in all of disc golf. One of the things that he did was guarantee $500 for first in Open. That brought in the likes of Steve Valencia, Dan Ginley, Scott Stokely and many other legendary names to Texas before they were legends back in the 80's.
One of the really innovative things he did through the tour was collect a player fee that accumulated to pay for the installation of a nine hole course here and there throughout the state. I am not sure where all the nine hole courses were installed, but there was more than one. I do know that the last one was the front nine at Z Boaz in Ft Worth. All of the Ft Worth golfers are grateful for that start on what has become one of the best courses in the state. That contribution alone (all of the baskets donated) is still contributing to the sport across Texas today.
He also started National Doubles for Am and Pro. He ran them all and then they turned into World Doubles, and he ran them too.
He ran the Waterloo Classic and Park Pete Open for years on the first course in Texas, and countless other events. The Texas State Overall Championship 2 times. Not to mention countless one round weekly events over the years.
Worlds Biggest Disc Golf Weekend has to be one of the best introductory tools the sport has seen to date, he did that too.
His vision and plan has him so far ahead of the rest of us that he has installed 2 resorts in the state. There is no possible way that this will pay off any time soon, it must be for the future.
I almost forgot, he is also in the Disc Golf Hall of Fame. He was Commissioner once. He is on the board of The Disc Golf Foundation. He designed a course at the Disc Golf Center in Augusta.
With all due respect, there is another person and maybe many other people that have been here the entire time laying the ground work so that Chris and many other TD's could go even farther and make their impact on the sport in the state.
Disc Golf was not invented in this decade or the one previous, there are people who have been working at this for multiple decades and they have made it possible to do all of the cool things that are going on now to make this game great. I think that your stance diminishes the efforts that others have put forth to make it possible for the great things that are happening now. You are not giving any credit for actions that have spanned decades in cities across the state and across the country and made it possible to even have a list of events that is as long as the one in Texas, let alone the world.
Maceman 1..Roosterboy 0. Good post. The most generous TD I have ever known is Mr. B in Toronto.

From the 1999 Disc Golf Hall of Fame induction:
Without a doubt, there is no one more devoted to the sport of disc golf than Tim Selinske.
When Tim is directing an event, there is this noticable 'calm'; a feeling that everything is 'being taken care of'. "Good hands", etc.

Houck definately has my vote from the point of view of how many courses he has put in the ground. I doubt anyone can touch that record, but I could be wrong.
Who else is out there that isn't being considered here?
Mark Horn, set to oversee the 27th CONSECUTIVE Wintertime Open[s] this Feb. It's like, an ANCHOR on the tour. Mark's a recent DGHOF inductee, largely for said accomplishment.

We'd have to check with DGA to see if they have any records for ones Ed actually designed. Over the years, I would think he might have done close to 100. Tom Monroe and John David were active regional designers for Ed and did quite a few of the early courses and Tom's still doing a few.
