What do you think is the best course in your state?

I've now played every public course in North Carolina and most of the private ones (61 in all) and my vote goes to...Renaissance in Charlotte as the best in NC.

From the courses I've played in othe states I'd vote for:
MD- Seneca in Gaithersburg
SC- Winthrop U. Gold in Rock Hill
GA- Lake Russel in Elberton

Best course in NW Ohio less than !50 mi. away is Belmont - Dayton... It's got some elevation elements (hills) which you don't see much around here. Hudson Mills in Michigan was sweet... I shot the short course & had my best day ever up there... of course the park is generous on the par's, giving you 5 on some of the shorter holes. That will keep you even....

Cool, The Woodshed seems to be well known!

But there is a course in Iowa, Fort Dodge specifically, it is only a 9 hole course but they had some excellent golf holes
one off a cliff about 50ft, and this other hole with about 5 sets of "tree gates" we would call double dog legs.

I played it about 10 years ago.....is it still there?

I would hope those putting Paw Paw at the top for WV would have played any other contenders in that state, because in my view, Wap Wap wouldn't even make the top 5 in some surrounding states. I'm surprised at the support for Brandywine which is OK but seems to be too open to be on the top. Overall, I liked Lums a lot better when I came through maybe five years ago. And Killens was horrendous with the prickers and poison ivy, making for a very uncomfortable experience. Tough call between Knob Hill and Tyler in PA with Codorus not even close. Looks like Lake Nockamixon could move right to the top in PA when it's up to 18.

i don't mean to start a debate, but... imo, though brandywine is open, the elevation changes and dropoffs near pins make it pretty challenging, not to mention absolutely beautiful. if being open makes brandywine less spectacular, being flat could be said for lums. killens has recently been cleaned up pretty well (look out for the gargantuan spiders though :))

There is more to a course than it's mathimatical sum total Chuck.

Brandywine and Paw Paw are complete phenomenon.

Besides, Brandywine is only "completely open" when the wind isn't blowing, which although calm at recent PDGAs is in effect for most of the year. Nowhere have I experienced a greater variety of shots that require power and accuracy where you can see the entire flight or path hand to target.

I've also found that in MADC country we tend to love the courses that hate us back (i.e. Patapsco Long, Seneca Long, Tinicum Long, Warwick Long, Paw Paw Long). These courses present a tangible mental and physical challenge that is real in the purest sense.

As a member of the Course Rating Committee, Im starting to wonder if there isnt an X Factor that should represent a substantial portion of the overall rating

When you post your opinion, how about also including the number of courses that you've played? And even better, include how many you've played in the state you're mentioning. I know that I evaluate courses differently the more courses that I've played.

Paw Paw is a disappointment because their stated design philosophy "to be randomly punitive" undermines what could be one of the best disc golf experiences around. But it's private property and their choice. There are several great holes, the terrain is gorgeous, their events are well run and their hospitality unparalleled. But there are also unnecessarily flukey fairways, some with just 'ways' without the 'fair', some are crossing and some are "nothing" open holes.

neonnoodle
Nov 18 2003, 04:30 PM
I'll agree with some of your assessment Chuck. The number of chuck (no pun intended) and hope throws is substantial and usually not my cup of tea.

But it is Wap Wap after all... And like you said the variety is vast.

300 courses in 35 states plus Ontario. In the states I've commented on (WV, PA, DE, MD), I've at least played the contenders mentioned by others. I'm surprised Seneca seems to hold its own compared with my MD favorite, Patapsco, but I haven't been to Seneca in 7 years or so. I would expect Warwick to be the prohibitive favorite for NY but I also enjoy playing Ellison. Isn't Morgan cooking up a contender for NY honors?

But there are also unnecessarily flukey fairways, some with just 'ways' without the 'fair', some are crossing and some are "nothing" open holes.

I used to think that the fairways were unfair at Paw Paw. Then I realized that they weren't any narrower than at other courses, just LONGER. Most disc golfers can throw a fairly straight short shot with a midrange disc but how many can throw a long drive that stays straight and lands in the middle of the fairway at the end of its flight? People try to bite off more than they can chew, I believe. If you don't have the control for the longer shots, move down to a midrange and stay on the fairway. Distance without accuracy is worthless in the woods.

The open holes serve as beautiful counterpoints to the woods. Who doesn't get excited when leaving the woods on hole 6 to throw the big downhill chuck on hole 7? The open holes are far from nothing holes; they are usually par 4s and play over significant elevation change. Of course 18 open holes would be B-O-R-I-N-G but that's not the case at Paw Paw; the open holes and the woods holes are perfectly balanced.

Other than its remote location, the only drawback to Paw Paw, and it's a minor complaint at best, is the punitive nature of the OB. In general I'm against all OB in general, both natural and artificial. (don't get me started on that!) Courses should be designed to stay as far away as possible from it. Penalty strokes (combined with a usual loss of distance) are just too punitive in disc golf. There's quite a few holes at the Paw Paw course that have OB hazards running almost the entire length of the hole, and the terrain somtimes even slopes towards the OB, such as on hole 4, which is only about 320 feet yet plays as a par 5. Scott Stokely told me a story once how everyone on his lead card, all top players in the world, took a six on this 320 foot hole. That's a farce!

ck34
Nov 18 2003, 07:07 PM
OB is not the problem on Woodshed #4. It's the lack of a clean fairway and good landing areas for the tee shot and around the basket. I suspect that none of those top players actually threw their shots OB, but were "worked" and either macked out or rolled out perhaps more than once.

Hole #2 is one of the great holes (even though some would consider it tainted since it has a mando) partly because the hole is both in the open and in the woods. Opportunities to do more holes with that open/wooded mix are everywhere but were missed in the design on both courses. That's one way to improve totally open holes, or for that matter totally wooded holes.

There are lots of courses designers could "improve" if they could cross a few fairways here and there. Hole 9 is cool but I couldn't (shouldn't) cross a fairway on a public course.

VA- Pleasant Run, Spotsylvania
NC- Zebulon, haven't played newer charlotte courses
MD- Seneca, although it hates me,haven't played long setup at patapsco..
SC- Earlewood, Columbia- best short course anywhere.
WV- Woodshed, Paw Paw- like john denver said.
PA- Knob Hill, Pittsburgh
DE- Lums Pond
MI- Cass Benton
TN- Warrior's Path, Kingsport
GA- Redan, Atlanta

the woodshed is likely my favorite course anywhere despite the fact that there are several holes i personally would not design into a course. since it is not a public park and doesn't see much day to day recreational play the crossing fairway there is not much of an issue, i have rarely seen it interfere with flow of play even with a course full of fivesomes.

pleasant run, earlewood, knob hill, and cass benton round out top 5 in no particular order. i have played 75 or so courses, primarily in the midatlantic.

Hey Chris,

Glad to see you think highly of Idlewild. I met you there on hole 15 a few days before the USDGC. Idlewild is being well maintained these days and more improvements are in the works. Do you know if Barry Schultz has ever played Idlewild? WCP form the long tees is 67, and from the short tees it is supposedly 60 -- but that is too low. there is almost no way a player with a 1000 rating would average 7 strokes better from the short tees (holes # 3, 13, and 14). Probably WCP form the short tees should be closer to 63.

chris
Nov 18 2003, 09:22 PM
Hey Rob! I'm surprised you actually still remebered :)
At the time Idlewild was my new favorite course up until I played Renny while I was at USDGC. Now it's down to #2 outta about 130 courses. I doubt Barry's ever played the course but I'll see if I can talk him into playing it next time he's out that way, I'll defintally recommend it to him. Being rated at exactly 1000, I shot a 6 stroke different between those 3 holes, but I did take a 6 from 14 long and a 2 from the short so that was a little extreme, I don't see it being any more than 5 strokes harder.

Idaho:

Toss up between Freeman Park in Idaho Falls and Lake Wolcott State Park near Rupert.

Either course is beautiful with a mix of wooded and fairly open holes, streams, elevation changes, and both right on the Snake River. You always stand a good chance of seeing bald eagles, herons, river otters, pelicans, and other wildlife. One is right in the city, the other 16 miles from the interstate in the middle of farm country.

Either one or both are well worth playing. Drop on by.

I'll be out in Seattle for the first time in January to visit my brother, ski the Cascades and play the disc golf courses so I'll weigh in then. Planned courses include:

Terrace Creek in Mountlake Terrace
Dalaiwood in Olalla
Lakewood
Fort Steilacoom
Riverside Park in Ft. Sumner

and definitely NOT the Dr. Fred course. :D

That sounds like a comprehensive look at the courses in the Seattle area. There is one course that I can think of that was left off the list. SeaTac. I've never played it, but I hear that the course record is 5 over par. There is information available at odsa.com if it sounds like something you're interested in. Me, I'm all for the groomed rolling hills of Lakewood.

Two IA votes? I guess the 80 courses to choose from was a little daunting for some? Can't argue with Grandview for a casual round. I think Walnut Ridge will get the nod after worlds. Formally nothing but open holes next to woods, it is now getting a decent mix of open/woods holes. Legion in Marion is right up there as well.

I don't think I saw a Missouri vote. McCormick gets the 1-2 sweep. Best course, Ozark Mountain. Most fun course, Akita's Run.

Kansas would be Rosedale. There is nothing cooler than a *real* 18 and a hidden 18 in the woods. (I actually played there two yrs in a row and didn't know there was another 18)

Texas....Hard to pick one, but I would have to go with Circ Hill at CR1. I have high hopes for the 4th course at San Saba, and as much as I love the other 3, I can't pick one over another yet. Most fun course goes to Seawright.

How about Nevada? Is there anything in Reno or is everything up there on the Cali side? I guess Sunset gets it by default.

Sinnissippi in Illinois. No brainer.

I suppose Kaposia in Minnesota, but I haven't played enough there.

And now for Arizona......

drumroll please....

Santa Cruz River Park in Tucson!!!! Oh wait, that would be where the easiest money in Arizona is.

Alright, let's try this again.....

Hoopes!!! [*****], they pulled that one.

One last try, let's keep moving north.

How about Thorpe. That'll work. And I only played it once. How sad. Guess I'll have to come back when I'm 40 to take Lance and Russell's money. [*****], they'll be seniors by then. Oh well, I guess I'll have to take Zach Walker's then.

It's tough to pick the best in Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin, because let's face it...there are so many good ones.

I will choose the best, by which ones are challenging and some of the most beautiful, peaceful places on Earth.

IA - Sugarbottom or Hickory Hills(24) or Ewing or Indian Hills
MN - Kaposia &/or Oakwood
WI - I can't decide

I haven't seen Zephyr Cove in Tahoe, NV but it has to be better than Sunset. The temp course used for the Vegas A-tier maybe 1999? was also pretty nice.

Too bad you can't have an IL course with the front nines of both McNaughton and Sinnissippi...

Sounds like the special LaMirada layout for the 2003 NT might be one of the best courses CA has seen?

It will be interesting to see how the course evaluations come out from the process currently under development by the course evaluation committee. I suspect there will be some courses that emerge as a result of a more complete evaluation. For example, some of the courses listed will not cut it on important categories like appropriate signage or tee quality.

worst course in every state? this is bound to spark debate!
one would certainly need an extensive knowledge of most courses in any given state to make this claim. w/r/t teescum, agreed. throwing at any basket is joy, but some courses need some improvement. where and why?

MD - Middletown. WIDE open, mostly flat terrain. Drive, putt. Drive, putt. etc. Plant some trees and maybe use the water and this course could be really nice. The metal chains installed recently help. Big positives are the beautiful mountain scenery and cleanliness. The course simply lacks challenge and direction.

I'm surprised by how many people are voting for Wilson in IN. I will admit it is one of the prettiest courses I've played but with Lemon Lake, Ox Bow and even Valpo in the Northern area, I can't believe Wilson is on the list for best.
McNaughton in IL. is a no brainer. Sinnissippi has the same problem as Northwoods in that there are some fabulous holes, but then there are some boring ones. BTW, just wait and Mokena might take it all in IL. My injury has kept me from working on it and therefore seeing it. But, from what I have heard this could be the shizzle!

OREGON: I take the lone road on this one probably, but I think Crow Road near Merlin (in southern OR) is a fantastically fun course. Don't know if it's still up, but there were 27 holes. Only drawback was that it is target golf. And actually I don't know if it's called Crow Road, but it's on BLM land next to that road.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

But I'm not sure that Wolcott is amongst the best. I agree that it's in a great setting away from everything. And you can camp there, next to a lake, with a dog, and play glow golf. Length, and it isnt just wide open. Those first three holes are great becuase you have to be accurate too. I like a course that even is a good score. I don't like birdie or die courses as much. Plus, my favorite hole in Oklahoma is hole 14 there.

Thorpe, in the worlds layout is an awesome course. Fountain is definetly up there, but doesn't have any trees. Just rolling hills, and lots of OB. I'm not sure which one I like better.

Thorpe in the short layout is a birdie-fest.

Nov 19 2003, 04:22 PM
Yep, that's what I was referring to....Thorpe as a birdie contest isn't that much fun. All ya do is avoid a couple trees and you're there. Pre-world set up I liked NAU better than Norpe (more character).

What about that sweet course in Kingsman, AZ.... NOT

Nov 19 2003, 04:25 PM
Now that I think of it, Dovillio is quite awesome. Especially some of those longer holes. BUT I think Hunter Park has way more variety (trees, elevation, and even some crushes) than Dovillio and is therefore a better/more fun course to play.

Ft. Dodge is still there, the shots that you refer to are awesome!

IA-Hmmmm.....tough choices, there are so many good ones, I personally like Sugar Bottom, though since moving to KC, I dont travel and play as much on my way.

IL-Libertyville before it became 9-holes, that 18 hole course was GREAT. West Park is always fun, and I look forward to this Mokena course with three pads at each hole.

WI-Man oh Man, AST is just too good, the entire Madison courses are well received for any disc golf enthusist, I have only played about as far north in WI as Madison, so this is based on Milwaukee/Madison courses.

MO-Water Works. How can you even compare Vichy? Vichy is a good course, but it is not really a complete course, is it? IT gets minimal use, is only open a few times a year, and will probably be gone by this time next year. Hopefully David and GDS will get land to make a course that everyone can play often. The course is not real "clean", meaning IMHO it has a lot of work to do to make it super cool, though I must admit the entire event is truly one to enjoy for disc golf!

KS-Well I am biased, I like the Down Under at Rosedale, it is after all my Favorite course, my home course.

CA-DeLa, hands down, wish I would have plyed more of the Northern (I-80 North) courses, but I hit most of the ones south of there. Balboa was by far the busiest thing I have ever seen in a disc golf empire, I was truly jealous.

IN-Lemon Lake, one of the better courses for elevationally starved areas. It was a treat to play there, I have not been much further East.

MI-I played Addison Oaks in '94 and thought the world of it. I have heard that it has gone to pot since then, but was majorly impressed when I played it, it was my first experience of holes over 1000', and I think one was close to 1500'......

GA-Sequoyah Park is one of the few that I played there, I liked it ok, but limited in the state selection. I see now where they have one at Lookout Mt, Man I went there, and thought why doesn't this park have a disc golf course. Good to hear, may have to head that way on the way to Augusta!

CO-Grammas-played it the last weekend it was there, loved it. Now, would have to be Frisco in the Summer, prefer Copper Mt.

NM-Sipaupu. (PERIOD) It is by far a course that I carry with me in my dreams always. It is like DeLa, except no ocean in the background. Absolutely Beautiful.

OK-Not sure tha tI have a favorite, I think that I probably need to play more courses there, Tulsa has a few, but many too flat, it sounds like Kevin is working on an area that will have elevation changes, and I missed getting to Duncan last year.

OH-Only played Columbus, Hoover Dam, enjoyed it.

I have played close to 100 different courses altogether, not that many, but over all here is the top 5 IMHO.

Sipaupu
Water Works (KCMO, and Rosedale can't go wrong with courses!)
Grammas/Frisco (mountains unfair, way COOL!)
DeLa
Madison (Again Pick a course)

I'm interested to hear if those who have played DeLaveaga in Santa Cruz, CA have played...

- Stafford Lake, Novato THE BURLIEST
- Hanging Oaks, Penn Valley THE TIGHTEST
- Bijou Park, South Lake Tahoe THE BEAUTIFULEST

Any questions? :D

Haven't played Novato. Played the other two. Still like DeLa better.
MO-Water Works. How can you even compare Vichy?

This may sound a little stupid on the surface, but there isn't much variety at Waterworks. Way too many straight shots with no other routes available. The only decision on most holes is whether to roll or not. Plus the long pins have way too many *3* holes. They are great 2's when you get them, but 90+% of the open field will get a 3 on most of them and they aren't hard enough to cause many bogeys (despite my contributions).

No question the Oz Mt course is raw, but being a guy that hates tee pads I'm not complaining. The reason I put in *fun* courses is for this very reason. Oz Mt may not always be fun, but it's the best *course*.

Don't get too bent out of shape about my WW comments. I like the course. It's certainly in my top 50, but I don't think it's world class. I think it's very similar to many of the DM courses before we started our world's improvements. Great parks, great equipment (baskets, pads, etc..), but there weren't very many holes that I just loved.

For the most part I wouldn't give any par 54 course the nod. I like to leave them in a separate category. I think they are executive courses. Many courses are starting to become tweeners (many holes are certainly tweener holes). Disc golf is slowly changing, and as more people get to experience courses with many par 4s and 5s some city parks will become obsolete. They've served their purpose, but it's time to move on. Land will obviously be difficult to come by to make great courses, but slowly they are starting to happen.

KY-Freeman Lake in Elizabethtown. I live about 15 minutes from Idlewild, which is definitely the toughest course in KY, I just enjoy Freeman Lake more. probably because it is not as mentally stressful to play.

OH-Mt. Airy. This is just a sweet course. If they could only keep folks from stealing the basket for Hole #6.

IN-Lemon Lake is a great course. I haven't played at the course in Valpo, but hear it is very nice as well.

NY-Warwick. I don't really think that there is much debate about that.

PA-I actually really enjoyed the course in Lancaster PA (Buckmuller ?), very picturesque although I enjoyed Knob Hill in Pittsburg and the Prompton Lake courses as well.

TN-Cedar Hill in Nashville.

WA-Ft. S. (don't know how to spell it) and I am not sure what set up I played.

NJ-only played Buzzy's Creek and really didn't care for it much. Could be related to the fact that some guy in a pickup ran over and destroyed one of my discs, apparently on purpose. Left a bad taste in my mouth.

IL-Have only played at the Joliet course. Enjoyed it from what I remember.

MI-Have only played at the Niles course. It was nice but from what I understand there are much better in MI.

FLA-Played the Am Worlds courses and Barnett Park in Orlando. All were fun, but from what I understand there are better in FLA as well.

WV-Have only played at Rotary Park in Huntington, so it is my defacto favorite in the Mountaineer State.

Dale, what is your favorite Ok course?

Nov 20 2003, 02:21 PM
Kid, Dovillio's design is solid because it is not all pitch and putt golf. :D
It's weakness are those Mach 1's with the added inner chains.
It is also a little right handed biased but not alot.
Kev Aka Nina says it is boring. It may be to Him.
I think that is partially because it does not fit His style of game as well as some other courses, for example McClure.
Yes I do own the course record or -8  during a weeknight mini. I don't know if or when I will be able to repeat that :( Even with its some weakness the design is definitely one of the best in OK. Especially considering the limitations of the park boundaries :o

I agree. Get yall some good baskets there!

Nov 20 2003, 03:33 PM
especially on hole 12 or something, where the disk can fall through the bottom of the basket. I saw that happen at the OO. Guy putts in from 5' and disc drops through bottom of basket! SWEET!!!!

Chuck I believe most people, including myself, are rating these courses according to their tournament conditions and layouts. As you know many courses' conditions vary from season to season and whether or not an event is imminent. While I agree it's hard to make B-wine #1 due to 18 wide open fairways,Killens is a great course, is very challenging in it's long layout, and while it may have had an exccess of growth when you happened by, it is always in pristine condition for the Hound Dog Howler in Aug.
Likewise I rated Rutgers in New Brunswick,NJ highly based on it's "Jersey Jam" layout although it's everyday layout is way too pitch and putt.

Brandywine has more woods hazards that people think. Hasn't anybody ever shanked one to the right on the Beauty or on hole 6, or behind the polehole on hole 6? How about the woods around the basket on hole#9? The woods on the left of hole#11? The brush around the polehole on #14? And people GOTTA be dealing with the thick stuff around the wall short of the polehole on the Beast.

You have not played all of the WW placements then Clue. But I understand. The newest course we are working on will be one that you love then, except we will have teepads, it is WW on steroids.

I think I understand what you mean in terms of straight shots, but things like the 5-hyzer are not the way disc golf should be. WW to me is a cleaner more beautiful place, where bad shots get punished, that is what disc golf should be about, not luck of missing trees, and hitting a fairway that is 15' across.

Will be in Des Moines this weekend to play, bringing rain gear. :(, going to the debate on Monday, maybe see you out there? I will probably play Ewing, then Grandview starting ~9 on Sunday, working on a new course SAturday here in town then heading to The temple of Satr night

In Michigan we have many great courses. My vote is for Hudson Mills. 48 holes, Original , Monster, Champion Monster (long - long). you can play all day and never leave the park. Have a fun relaaxing round on the original and then head over to the Monster and try to shoot under par. Plus is there a better club than A3?

P.S. No way am I biased :) :) :) :) :D:D

Hi, I am Laura McNellis the Program Supervisor at Mokena Park District, and you are right the new course is going to be awesome! It is a 27 hole course with 54 tee boxes. The land it is on is unbelievable. The trees and rolling terrain make it a perfect natural course!! Thanks for bringing us up, and can't wait to see you out on the course!

Nov 29 2003, 04:09 PM
The best course in Ohio is Spiker-Arboretum Championship Disc Golf Course in Canton, Ohio. This course has everything, trees, tight fairways, wide open fairways, water hazards on several holes, OB and a new set of concrete long tee pads that measure 9700' over 24 holes. That's an average of over 400' per hole. The short course measures 7600'. If you haven't played this course yet you are missing out on some fantastic golf. This course is far better than Mt. Airy or any other course in Ohio!!!!

Nov 30 2003, 05:14 AM
Maine - Enman Field in Brunswick. Two 18-hole courses cut through the Maine woods. Both par 72, very challenging.

Texas - Of the ones I've played (all in the Dallas area), Veteran's Park and Z-Boaz are tops. I hear the Circle R's down south are much better, but I haven't played them yet.

I've played quite a few of the GA courses and I think that Lake Russell State Park in Elberton is the hands down winner. The park is gorgeous. Beautiful fir trees line the well manicured grassy fairways. It even has an additional fun little 9 hole pitch and putt course in the woods off of hole 12. It's like being on a manicured ball golf course.

It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out once the Course Evaluation process is completed. But right now, for its size and number of courses, Maryland would be one of the contenders for best average course. Not sure how we would do the math on that. Probably need to limit it to courses with at least 18 holes.

I've only played the Pleasure Island courses in Texas. I loved the 2 long courses at the far end of the island (which I think were temporary). Other than those I haven't heard much about the other courses.

For quality and vicinity I'd find it hard to believe that any area equals what we have here in the MADC region. Rock Hill, Renny, Cedar Rock, Zebulon in NC would be the closest thing to what we have in Paw Paw, The Grange, Seneca, Patapsco, Brandywine, Tyler, Tinicum, Nockmixon, Prompton, and Warwick.

Back those MADC Courses up with Silver Level Courses in the region - Codorus, Buchmiller, Akron, South Mountain, Kennett Square, Lums Pond, Killens Pond, and Rockburn and you will find it even harder to find 250 mile round area with as many quality courses. Our Bronze Level Courses ain't bad either - Sedgley Woods, Rutgers, Vineland, Calvert, French Creek, Jordon Creek, Druid Hill and White Clay.

Don't search for the GOLD, SILVER, BRONZE Course Ratings System, I just made it up off the top of my large head.

Though I've only played 3 rounds there, Ted's Dread in KC, KS, a private 18 holer is the finest DG course I've ever played...with Z-Boaz (TX) and Water Works (KCMO) tied for 2nd.

Ted's has it all...long, short, open, wooded, elevation changes, pond, creeks, tunnel shots, OB fences...!
There's a traditionally non-sanctioned tourney at Ted's Dread in mid-April, The Redbud Open. This course is less than 10 minutes from the WyCo DG course, also in KCK...both of which are less than 5 minutes from the new Kansas Raceway = NASCAR!!

But I've thrown all of them countless times.

I think overall, the best courses that I have played are the Circle R Wimberly courses...and it's a toss up between the Meadow course and the Hill course.

Honorable Mention goes to the Bayou Course for a 9-holer.

Bayou is relatively evil, for a 9 holer. next time you come to H-town, try our Fly 18 course, on a lit 9 hole ball golf course.

Bayou is relatively evil, for a 9 holer. next time you come to H-town, try our Fly 18 course, on a lit 9 hole ball golf course.

Flypads are down, 2 baskets per hole, and a BUTTLOAD of water!!!

pay to play, but its worth it! Especially in the winter, when you get to play after dark!

All I can add is AMEN!

Where is the Bayou course?

The Bayou course is right in downtown Houston. It lays alongside of Buffalo Bayou. It is probably one of the most scenic courses set in an urban area and probably our only course with elevation factor...water hazards too.

The Bayou Course was renamed several years ago to the Jim Mozola Memorial Course.

Before I moved to Austin, I lived about 2 miles from this course. I used to throw 10-15 rounds per week here before I moved. It's still one of my all time favorite courses.

Damm, and I have to go and leave MD :(
3 miles from the Rock, 15 from Pataps and Druid, 25 from Calvert, 40 from Seneca, 2hrs or less to any of the following Paw Paw, The Grange, Loriella, Killens, Brandywine, Lums, Codorus and a whole lot more...
Well, I'll be checking out some OK, TX and AK courses in the near future...
As far as MD goes, I'm kind of partial to Rockburn though Patapsaco is probably a better course. If you haven't played the Rock lately, do yourself a favor and check it out. It has definitely improved vastly over the last 2 years.

I just got back from a vacation to the Pacific Northwest. I only had time to play 4 courses, two in Washington and two in Portland, OR.

The highlight of my trip was playing Pier Park in Portland. Maybe it’s because I’m from Pennsylvania and not used to tall trees, but this is undeniably the most beautiful course I have ever seen in my life, out of over 100 courses played. When you picture in your head what a course in the Pacific Northwest might look like, this is it: fairways over rolling hills and between towering 100+ foot evergreens. You almost feel like Alice in Wonderland walking around on this course because of the large trees, and it warps your frame of reference in terms on lengths of the holes. As far as playability goes, the course mostly plays as par 3.5s – many holes that are really difficult to birdie, but scoring a 4 feels like a bogey. Most holes are shots between the trees, but it’s tough to call them tunnel shots because the trees are spaced far apart and only keep honest drives honest. There are also several HUGE off-the-top-of-hill downhill chucks, like hole 7, that will have you emptying your entire bag. I can’t say enough about this course! You can see pictures at the following link, but it doesn't do it justice.

http://www.lynchclan.com/leftcoast/pierpark1.html

E-mail me privately if you would like my full thoughts on all the courses, as I'm hesitant to post a negative commentary about some of the courses. I found one course in particular very dangerous, and I got in hot water for publicly asserting on another message board that a course in that city was dangerous.

An absolute HUGE second to that motion. There is NOTHING like the Canyon. Not only is it beautiful and varied land, but you have no idea where you are until the third or fourth day. You turn a corner and you're thinking, "Where in the h**l did that hill come from?" It is SWEEET, just don't bother in the summer. :(

IF you can, Find a local that will take you out to a course that is at a Private Community Housing Tract. I played there in 1993 right after it was installed. It was obvious then that it would ONE DAY be a NARLY course. At that time it was a MID to Long Course BUT ALL fairways are only about 100' wide at most with 15 or 20' walls on both sides (protecting the houses) There were 100's of young trees about 10' or so tall at the time. I am told that they are all now at least 20 -30' tall and make the shots over the top nearly impossible. It has HUGE concrete tees and Mach III's through out.

Good Luck finding it...If you do...IT is the best course in Las Vegas :p

Feb 04 2004, 11:35 AM
just played mtn crest and peccole ranch two weeks ago. mtn crest is a young course, fairly easy, lots of birdies, give that course some time to mature and it will be great.
peccole ranch is better than any other course in vegas. lots of mature trees, the fairways have opened up a bit from a few years ago due to tree loss but still set up for the advanced/pro player. get a local to show you the course or it will take you more than the three hours it took me to play it. if you can find all the holes at all. P.R. is the best kept secret for disc golf in vegas. play it once and youll see what i mean.

In October of 1998 I went out to Vegas to see Phish for Halloween. We rented a car for the day and drove out to Red Rock, then came back and played the Peccole Ranch course.

We had a decent time, but I had serious safety concerns with the course. There was a great stretch of holes where two holes played parallel to each other in a space barely wide enough for one hole to safely exist. Imagine the scenario: you have walkers, joggers and people sitting on park benches with golfers throwing discs from not one, but both directions!!! It's a miracle nobody has ever been seriously hurt there. Eventually, one of the lesser skilled golfers in my group put a disc over a fence into somebody's backyard. Despite Casey Lewis's written plea on his website and our heated objections, he insisted on scaling the wall AND fence to retrieve his disc. We were fully expecting him to fall and hurt himself or a homeowner to come out with a shotgun blazing.

Thanx to all for the Vegas course info! They all sound interesting. Guess I'll try Sunset first. A friend is coming along and he's very much a beginner (throws many skaters, not much distance), so I may avoid the 'disc eater' course with the walls and the housing and the klavin with the thing on it...

I have seen only two Oklahoma listings of best course and they both said Dovillio. WTF? Dovillio is Ok but please!

No T-Pads
A few signs
It's killer long
Totally flat
When it sprinkles lightly you gotta strap on your golashes in order not to get stuck in the mud

Best course in the World is wherever I am playing then.

Best in Oklahoma (if I had to choose) would have to be McClure.

Some long
Some short
Lots of Obstacles (all holes if you count the pedestrians)
Almost half the course is lit at night
Sundays there are at least 100 people grilling and the Tejano Music is blaring!
Disc store
You can leagaly drink beer on this course (no bottles of course)
There is always someone to play with
Plus this is where I first learned to play.

Red Rock Canyon is a National Conservation Area. It is noted for its amazing and beautiful geology - thrust faults moved carbonate over sandstone, and so all the canyon walls change color about halfway up. It's just a really cool place to hike, bike, picnic, etc. See the link below.

It is very hard to pick your favorite, but your favorite in each state makes it a bit easier. Here are some of my favorites.

Mount Airy Forest, in Cinci is still on top of my list (even though I haven't been there in soooooo long)
Z Boaz, I am obviously biased on this one
Toronto Island
Kaposia
Stafford Lake
Aiman Ranch (the coolest object course I have ever played)
Flip City
Winthrop Gold
Seneca Creek
Hornets Nest
Renny
Ted's Dread
Water Works
Earlwood
Grandview
Ewing
Tennicum
Cabin Creek

The first two are in order the rest are ordered relative to where I am at the time. I find it very hard to rank courses above one another, but I have liked Mount Airy from the first time I played it. It has everything you could want in a course, it is beautiful.

I enjoyed Dovillio, Hunter, and McClure...Tulsa Rocs!!

Have heard many good things about Duncan Lake...how does it compare to the above?

I think one of the biggest differences besides the obvious(the terrain) is it is unforgiving. You throw a bad shot and you will most likely add a stroke or three. I know the course like the back of my hand and I get punished everytime I play it. :mad:You will either love it for the challenge it offers and the scenic hilly terrain and lakeview or you will hate it because you will think it is too tough and you don't want that kind of challenge. If the latter is the case you can always play from the short tees. :p You can enjoy the same scenery and your score will look alot better. More fun for you!
As far as which course is the best in Oklahoma I am obviously biased of course, but for the challenge and beauty I say D. Lake. I have played all of the other courses mentioned with the exception of Copperhead Canyon and from what I hear it is a great course. One course that I don't think is mentioned enough is Boomer lake park in Stillwater. I would play that course all of the time if it was a little closer. Same goes with Hunter park in Tulsa. Dolese park-OKC, Dovillio-Tulsa, McClure-Tulsa and Lions park-Norman are all very challenging and fun courses. If I am in either Norman or OKC and want to play a quick/enjoyable round I will play Colonial Estates-Norman or Will Rogers-OKC. They are both alot of fun. Broadlawn Park in Ardmore is also a fun course to get a quick round in if you are near. Like Copperhead Canyon I haven't yet played the new course at the Softball Complex in Ardmore. My favorites could likely be shuffeled a bit when I do.

MOKENA?!?!?!? WHAT!!! If you like THAT, you should move down to J-town. They're all lame pitch and putts down here.

I sould say that Live Oak is the best disc golf community. They have the city 100% on board and the golfers there are friendly. For new york Warwick is easily the best, although fdr plays well and kisco is a classic being the second oldest course in the usa. Warwick has 4 different options per hole, two tees and two baskets, and there is an addition to the course in the works. If you can, play all three.

...I'm surprised at the support for Brandywine which is OK but seems to be too open to be on the top...

I just played Brandywine for the first time, and it's the only course I've played in DE. Although it is open the scenery is so magnificent. All you see is meadows, rolling hills, and trees wherever you look. The tremendous elevation changes also give it high marks. Hole 16 toward the barn was my favorite. It also helped that I played at the end of the day and the sunset was gorgeous. What a great course! I think it will be in my top 10 (of over 120 played in 15 states).

I've played the most in PA/MD/DE/VA.

MD - Used to be Patapsco until the Rangers decided cutting the grass was a bad idea. Seneca is now best in MD.
VA - The Grange! Not so much for the courses but for the overall experience. Tiki, vintage video, and the course host are why I think the Grange is VA's best option.
PA - I love Coduras.
DE - I love Brandywine.

I also loved Mt. Airy in Cincy, Keriakes in KY, Warrior's Lake in TN, and Cedarock/Wellspring in Burlington NC.

36 hole courses are the bomb. Courses with no elevation are not my cup of tea. And courses with thousands upon thousands of ankle breaking rock outcroppings (and no grass or dirt to walk on) are useless. Esp. when said outcroppings cover the entire first 5 holes. It's like playing in a rock quarry. Each round forever alters your discs.

Can you give any specifics of why you think Live Oak is better than other TX courses? Is it just because it's your home course? I've only had the chance to play Live Oak once and both Circle R courses once and I haven't played Moody's. But I played Circle R Meadow one day and Live Oak the next. Overall both have a lot going for them, but I thought Circle R was much better, even if it was more rugged.

It really depends on what you are looking for in a course. Some people prefer the long ranch style while others the manicured fairways or tight tree holes.

What was said about the Live Oak disc golf community is very true. It is a very good place to play and be around disc golf. The almost 2 full courses are some of the most fun golf around with a great variety of holes.

Cirlce R Rolling Meadows is one of those great ranch courses.

The new Twin Parks Country Club course in Dripping Springs has just been redesigned and is now a great course. I hear cement tees are going in next week. Even the shorter Rec tees offer a great course.

However nothing beats courses like Winthrop Gold in Rock Hill,SC. That is just a beautiful place to play.

Sep 16 2004, 09:30 AM
I love Live Oak, and some of those holes on the back are among the best we have in the state.

However, if we're talking best, along the lines of my better courses thread - i.e. championship caliber challenge with a wide variety of shot requirements, it can't quite make the top of the list. Not yet, anyway.

That's not a knock on Live Oak, its just a statement of how good courses like Rolling Meadows and Cameron East are. The San Saba courses are rough, But I think the Colorado River Course deserves to be in that lineup as well. And you also have to include one of the courses that consistently rates highest in Texas SSA's (see Chuck, I do pay attention to those ;) ), Moody's Disc Golf Country Club in Red Rock.

Still, I think Live Oak is one of my favorite tournament courses, and even though the front is mega easy, some of the back holes force you to play smart and solid golf.

Sep 16 2004, 10:25 AM
Oh, and as for my favorite courses in other places:

Sipapu, NM
Ewing, IA

I wanted to pack ewing in my suitcase and bring it home with me from Worlds. I love that course.

I have only gotten to see some of waterworks in KC, not play it, but it looks awesome.

Played Fountain Hills in AZ, but it was a pain in the arse for someone who didn't know the course. Pretty cool, though.

I've played La Mirada, but I was still a relative newbie at the time and didn't care for it much. Maybe I didn't give it a fair shake.

My Texas top 10:

Cameron East, Waco
Rolling Meadows, Wimberley
Colorado River, San Saba
Moodys DGCC, Red Rock
Old Settlers, Round Rock
Riverside Park, Victoria
City Park, Live Oak
Circ Hill, Wimberley
Veteran's Park, Arlington
Cameron Park, Waco (long pin setup)

With an honorable mention to the most challenging 9-hole birdie course in Texas, Galloway Hammond Recreation Center, Burnet. :D

Also, my favorite place to play, for a lot of reasons, is the Resort Course, Lago Vista.

My Top 5 overall:

Siapapu, NM
Ewing Park, IA
Grandview, IA
Big Creek, IA
Cameron East, TX

Just doing a little Course Directory update and discovered Minnesota recently passed California to move into 3rd place in state rankings for number of disc golf courses. Texas is still a solid first with 113 followed by Iowa at 94 and MN at 88. Cali has stalled for a while near 87 followed by Wisconsin who had a big jump to 5th with 70 (perhaps Highbridge helped), passing Illinois and Michigan tied for 6th at 68. Folks, that's almost one-third of all U.S. courses in our 5-state Upper Great Lakes
area.

Just looked at this thread for the first time. I live in MI, haven't played a ton of courses, went to Hudson Mills and it was kickin'. Saw that alot of people put Tabogon for MI, but haven't heard of it til I saw it here, and noticed people said its a temp course. Does temp, mean then and never again, or like comes and goes? Where was it?

The Toboggan was originally put in for the 2000 World's. Now it makes an annual appearance at the US Am Nationals. Check it out near the end of September, it'll be in for a week or two. It plays on and around the Toboggan hills at Kensington.

...if were going to include temp. courses, ones got to include the monster, 9,377 foot La Mirada, CA layout . I dont see the #s for the recently-concluded U.S. Masters, but the nigh-identical set-up in May for Golden State NT ranged from 63.06 to 60.50 SSA's.

La Ma would still count as 1 course because of same venue just different layout. Same with Winthop Lakefront and Championship.

At first glance here are some that I dont see listed..

Ammon Ranch & Horse Mountian + the new River Course maintained by the Par Infinity club out of Arcata.

New course at the Community College in Ukiah. 3 months old

New course at Kennedy Park in Napa. Disc on Ball Golf. Im told they have purchased the 18 baskets and are just waiting to install for Par 72.

Plus Private courses galor that the owners just dont want listed :p

I wish I could afford 100 acres. :)

I am disappointed in the people from Oregon, naming so few of our incredible disc golf courses. Here are a few of my favorite:

Milo McIver - 27 holes of various terrain and enviroment, will make you discover new shots (home of a NT event in 2005)

Pier Park - When you think of Oregon this is what you expect

Dexter - Placement! Placement! Placement!

Whistlers Bend - Crazy! Beautiful!

Adair - New and tough

if anyone want s to get a virtual tour of Pier Park or Dexter, you can check it out at www.bulleyediscgolf.com (http://www.bulleyediscgolf.com)

While Ill always have a special place in my heart for the awesome elevation changes, wind hazards, water hazards, and picturesque vistas at the Brandywine Creek disc golf course, the Diamond States newest course is now the toughest, and best, course in the state, in my opinion.

The pro-style layout at Iron Hill Park in Newark, DE features tough par threes, true pro par four and pro par five holes, and the best golfing challenge the state has to offer! Playing on a rugged hilltop through scattered open areas, thick woods, and serious elevation changes, this brand new course is a par 68 gem that will challenge almost every aspect of your golf game. It will teach you discipline, as fairway placement is an absolute must and critical to scoring well on this course.

Hole#1 gives you a pretty good taste of what will follow: a 500-ft. hole left-to-right turning pro par four hole with an ample fairway but heavy rough off to the side, making fairway placement almost mandatory. I had to walk the entire length of hole#3 to appreciate it fully, and the thought of "signature hole" immediately came to mind. (That would last for one hole) With a low ceiling off the tee and somewhat downhill, this one screamed righty backhand roller. The green location is just tremendous on this hole, with a stream and beautiful little bridges - simply stunning. Hole#4 almost brought tears to my eyes it was so beautiful. Playing slightly downhill and with an extremely generous fairway, it's just an incredibly gorgeous disc golf hole and looks like it's straight from of a country club. It reminds me a little of hole#17 at Wellspring, NC only without the pond on the right. It's about 505 feet to the long pin, but an elite player could probably reach it with a backhand roller. Hole#5: Holy cow! If the last two holes didn't make people realize that this was a serious golf course, this hole surely will. Fairly placement is absolutely essential on this nearly 700' hole with some 30+ feet of elevation gain. To the long pin this hole is a bonafide pro par five and should banish the notion from any of those who still stubbornly maintain that all holes in disc golf are par 3s. This elevated pin area amongst the boulders was very pretty and I would be sad if I came out to the course and the basket wasn't in the long position. (It would also make the hole 'only' a pro par four) There are a lot of pole hole positions at this course that I think will be better in the long and this one is certainly one of them. Hole#7: A really nice downhill par 3. I hit some trees right by the short pin and ended up 10 feet left of it. This hole will probably be enjoyed more in the short pin as one of the few deuce opportunities which are needed for the madness that comes on the back nine. Hole#10: Fairway placement is so, so important on this hole! This is easily the tightest fairway on the entire course. Hole#12 reminded me of the eighth hole to the 'C' pin at Tyler State Park, complete with the 90 degree dogleg left and the requisite road if you go long. If the road around this basket is OB, there is going to be some very high scores on this hole. Hole#14 is prominently placed right at the park entrance which will give the sport some nice exposure to people driving in and out of the park. The short pin will certainly get deuced on this one, and because of the wide fairway I think this one is just a tough par 3. At 899 feet and with some 40 feet in elevation gain, hole#17 is one of the longest & toughest holes I've ever played. But you know, I loved ever frustrating minute of it! This is a hole that should (again) finally open the eyes of those stubborn "all holes are par 3 in disc golf" yahoos. If anyone ever scores an (eagle) 3 on this hole, they should win the ace pot!
The Iron Hill course lives up to the hype and then some - it was a course that taught discipline and you instantly paid the penalty for errant shots. Conservative shots were rewarded, and it struck me after the round was over that I didn't use a single long-distance driver the whole round - my Destroyers, Wraiths, Sidewinders, etc. all stayed in the bag the entire time. I loved the "U.S. Open" feel to the rough and hope that no attempt is ever made to widen the fairways of these holes - they are perfect just as they are. It's a course that will separate the wheat from the chaff - golfers just below 1000 and up are going to score a lot of birdie 3s on this course and those "mullet pros" like myself are gonna shoot at least 4 and maybe worst on many of them. It's a disc golf course for the 21st century, and considering how fast the course was designed and installed the results are nothing short of spectacular.

In fact, it's tough to find a single drawback to this course. The location is so convenient right off I-95, it's close to restaurants and bars, its elevated exposure and shaded trees means it will play a few degrees cooler than most courses and as opposed to nearly every other course in the state, it's FREE to play! Kudos to all who contributed to this cause and for making the number 1 disc golf course in the Diamond State. It's easily one of my top 10 ever played lifetime, and it's only going to get better with age!

Well Texas has alot, and I am privileged to travel and play most of them.
Hyer Myers DGC in Rockwall is a John Houck very well designed (ball golf type) Because its so well planned out, lots of placement, and L shots, great course, huge park, well maintained, great club all factors that help.
Cedar Hill (not best planned course) but beautiful senerys and Huge 36 hole 2 course Disc Golf only park is way cool, no walkers and gapers.
Z-Boaz always a great Texas Course.

Please check your facts before you defame.

Hope all is well with you otherwise.

OK, I checked some facts. We did make the tee signs for that course. We make tee signs for courses all over the country -- I hope people understand that it doesn't mean that we designed those courses. All our signs say "Tee Signs by HouckDesign." That's pretty unambigious. Courses I design are clearly labeled "Course Designed by John Houck" -- even less ambiguous.

In this particular case -- let me try to put this diplomatically -- I will only say that I spoke to the course designer after looking at the plans, and I indicated that it was not the most ideal location I'd ever seen for a disc golf course.

Bill, I appreciate you trying to give me an excuse, since there really isn't anything to work with, but let me say again that I did not design that course, and I am not responsible for any amusing tee locations.

I try to save my most amusing tee locations for my home courses.

Feb 19 2010, 02:43 PM
John, I am sorry that you would think that I would make a post that would cause you to think that I was trying to defame your or discredit you as a course designer. I know you have better and more important things to do than feel the need to rebut posts on an internet discussion board. I have reaped the benefits of your designs, most recently in Rockwall.

I also apologize for having in my mind the assumption that you were the course designer. I played the course so fast (it only takes about 20-25 min at most) that I didn't really pay attention to the tee signs, other than noting your name. I now realize that you were only responsible for the designs of the tee signs, which are very nice, and not the course.

And here is what I meant by amusing tees. Many holes have multiple tee signs, and here is what I remember about more than one of them:

1) The shortest hole is a concrete tee pad.
2) The next tee is grass, with the tee sign about 20 ft directly behind the tee pad.
3) The "long" tee is about 20 feet directly behind the middle tee.

Whoever designed the alternate tees clearly had ball golf instead of disc golf in mind. First, the "directly behind each other" is clearly a ball golf model for alternate tees, not disc golf. And secondly, the thought that a disc golfer needs a run up was not seriously considered. I say that because there are, IIRC, two holes that tee off close to the park property line, and the tee sign for the "long" hole is, again IIRC, about one disc length from the fence, with the fence being topped with barbed wire!

THAT is what I found amusing. And I knew that, even if you had designed the course, which you didn't, you had nothing to do with these alternate tees!

Again, to the peanut gallery, John did NOT design this course!

And, thank you, I and my family are doing well. My oldest is starting college in the fall and I am trying to figure out how to pay for it.

And I hope you and your lovely bride are doing well. Any little ones yet?

I enjoyed seeing you in KC, and look forward to actually seeing you in DG competition some day.

Take care.

Olse designed the course at Ingleside which I haven't played but it is supposedly pretty tough. Manor is up there, Rockwall, and I personally like the variety at Wilco. I might head into Austin and play the Bible Church tomorrow instead of practicing Manor since I won't have any other time soon to see it.
